Thakur Chandrabhan lives a wealthy lifestyle in a small village in India. He is widowed and lives with his sister; a widowed daughter-in-law, Saraswati; and a grand-daughter, Tara, who is of marriageable age. Also living in this household is Bholanath, who is blind since birth, and helps with household chores. Tara's marriage is arranged with a young man, Pratap Singh, from a noble family, who approves of Tara, but demands a dowry of 3 Lakh Rupees. Chandrabhan does not have this much money, but Bholanath has been stashing away cash, that is guarded by a snake, and offers all of it to Pratap, who accepts it and absconds. Blind Bhola is unable to pursue him, but is instead bitten by the snake, regains his vision and sets forth to Bombay to locate Pratap. Several weeks later, Bholanath returns home, just in time to be told that he must marry Tara, as she refuses to marry anyone else. Tara notices something very odd about Bholanath as he calls her "Tara', not as "Little Mistress" as he used to; he is terrified of snakes; and seems more cultured and educated. The family decides to get the two engaged, however, the ceremony is interrupted by the arrival of the police, who have an arrest warrant for Bholanath for Theft, and Murder of a young woman named Lucy. A doctor doing research on cancer treatment faces challenges when he first loses his wife, and then his vision. Dr. Ravi returns from abroad and takes up position as Chief Surgeon in a hospital. He then meets with Nurse Shanti, who lives an impoverished lifestyle with her ailing mother, and decides to perform surgery, but she passes away, and a guilt-ridden Ravi marries Shanti much to the chagrin of his mentor, Kaka, who had hoped that he would marry his daughter, Rajni. The couple then travel to Kashmir for their honey-moon, and then settle down to a harmonious relationship. Hoping to travel even more, their plans are interrupted by the hospital's head doctor, who wants Ravi to focus on cancer research. The couple drop all travel plans and immerse themselves in research so much so that Shanti herself becomes ill, and not wanting to become a burden, leaves. A frantic Ravi searches high and low in vain, and is subsequently devastated to learn that she has perished in a train accident. Kaka then becomes very ill and Kaki tells Ravi that the cause of his illness is Rajni's insistence that she not marry anyone except Ravi. As a result, Ravi marries her but is unable to get Shanti out of his mind. An embittered Rajni feels neglected and decides to confront him - resulting in his losing his vision - perhaps never to see again - and unable to do any further cancer research.

Jitendra Gupta lives a poor lifestyle in Calcutta, India, along with his elder and widowed sister, and a niece named Sushma. He works in the editorial department of a leading newspaper. He unauthorizedly exposes unscrupulous persons that are related to the newspaper's board of directors, leading to him being reprimanded by the Managing Director, Amita Sinha, and being forced to resign. Amita does have a change of heart, when she finds out that he had printed the truth, not only reinstates him but promotes him as the Chief Editor, and falls in love with him. Amita lives a wealthy lifestyle with her sister, Sunita, and is all set to tell her the good news that she finds out that Sunita has fallen in love with him also. Amita decides to give up on Jitendra in her sisters' interest. Shortly thereafter she receives a marriage proposal from wealthy Vikram Varma, the brother of a Director of the newspaper, for Sunita's hand. Will Amita seek this opportunity to wed Sunita with Vikram - and have Jitendra for herself?

Maharaja Vikram decides to marry his daughter Anuradha to his commander's son, Pratap. However, years later, Anuradha is abducted by bandit Suraj while on her way to Pratap's coronation. Vikram Singh is the Maharaja of Pratap Nagar and is very impressed with his Senapati Sangram Singh for years of loyal service. He decides to make him a Maharaja and agrees to marry his daughter, Anuradha, with his son, Pratap. Years later, Vikram sends his now grown-up Anuradha to visit the coronation of Rajkumar Pratap Singh and approve of him as her husband, and she sets off without any escort with just her maid-servant, Kalavati, for company. Shortly thereafter, Vikram is informed that Kalavati has been abducted by a bandit named Suraj Singh, he accordingly rushes over to Sangram's and this is where he discovers to his shock that Kalavati is posing as Anuradha, and it is his daughter that has been abducted by Suraj. Vijay a poet whose work is not taken seriously by the publishers even his elder brothers dislike him for the same and want him to find a suitable job.Due to all this Vijay leaves his house and starts living alone where once he encounters a prostitute Gulabo murmuring his poem and follows her but she feels he is an impostor.But Gulabo soon realizes her mistake and meets him and both develop feeling for each other he comes across Ghosh a publisher who wants to publish his poems but in turn hires him as a servant.Vijay finds that his former lover Meena is married to Ghosh for financial security and when Ghosh finds about it he fires him from work.Vijay is again left jobless and no where a beggar whom Vijay gave his coat meets with a train accident and everyone believes he is dead.But Vijay is very much alive and tries to prove his identity but his sent to an asylum where his brothers and Ghosh refuse to identify him. —alex.mjacko@gmail.com Unemployed Vijay is the youngest in his family consisting of his widowed mom, and two brothers. His passion is poetry - frowned upon by his brothers - who want him to find gainful employment instead. Vijay's poems are quite radical in which he laments about the poor, the destitute, and the arrogance of the rich after the departure of the British from India. His efforts to get them published are in vain. He takes to drinking, gets in trouble with the law, is disowned by his brothers, ends up at a brothel and befriends a prostitute named Gulabo. Gulabo is sympathetic, listens to him as he pours his heart out, and decides to assist Vijay.
