The police constable O'Connell (Nicholas Irons) arrests Kiranjit based on evidence & send her to prison. Deepak's room had a vat of oil which was poured on him before setting him on fire. During interrogation, Kiranjit admits that she only wanted to hurt Deepak as he had hurt her previously. In prison, Kiranjit has to deal with the trauma of giving up all her jewelry including her Kada and her Mangalsutra. She is then forced to strip naked in front of a prison female guard to change into prison clothes. Before trial the UK court assign Kiranjit a lawyer Miriam Taylor (Rebecca Pidgeon) who wants to understand the motivation behind Kiran's actions. Kiranjit Ahluwalia (Aishwarya Rai), a Punjabi woman, marries Deepak Ahluwalia (Naveen Andrews) in an arranged marriage and moves to South Hall, UK with him to be closer to his family. Initially he seems caring and affectionate towards her but soon enough the true colors of her husband begin to show as Deepak gradually reveals a darker, threatening, and even Sociopathic side of himself. Deepak won't allow Kiran to wear western clothes and would beat for dancing with his friend Ravi (Ray Panthaki) at weddings, which Deepak himself insisted. Charged with attempted murder, her case comes to the notice of a group of South Asian social workers running an underfunded organization called the Southall Black Sisters. Radha Dalal (Nandita Das) from the Black Sisters visits Kiran in prison to understand her case. Jamila (Shaheen Khan) and Asha (Karen David) are Radha's colleagues. Deepak dies from his injuries in the hospital, turning it into a murder case. Kiran tells Radha that she feels freer in prison that she ever did in 10 years of marriage to Deepak. After enduring ten years of abuse and having two children with him, Kiranjit, unable to bear the brutality and repeated sexual assaults at the hands of her husband any longer, sets fire to his feet while he is sleeping, unintentionally killing him. Deepak's mother testifies against Kiran in court & refuses to give any witness to allegations of sexual assault & torture that Kiran has made against Deepak. O'Connell is asked to testify on Kiran's mental state when she was arrested. The detective in charge pressurizes O'Connell to testify that Kiran was fully mentally alert and in her senses. The defense lawyer presents a doctor from an emergency room who treated Kiran several times for signs of domestic abuse. But Kiran herself refuses to testify against Deepak as she deems it too shameful. Kiranjit is sentenced to life imprisonment with possibility of parole in 12 years. She befriends her cellmate, a Caucasian woman named Veronica Scott (Miranda Richardson), who teaches her English. Veronica is also friends with several girls in the prison and stands up for Kiranjit against the local prison bully. Veronica introduces Kiran to her friends Jackie (Deborah Moore), Lula (Maxine Finch), and Galdys. Radha manages to bring Kiran's kids to prison by making her mother-in-law believe that it is a court order. Radha also connects with Miriam to get work started on Kiran's appeal. Miriam says that she worked very hard on the case, and didn't charge Kiran for it. She says that the ruling was right as per the law, and refuses to file an appeal, even though she sympathizes with Kiran. One night, Veronica sees Kiran waking up from a nightmare and crying uncontrollably. Kiran tells her life's story to Veronica. Soon, its over a year since Kiran was jailed. Radha tells Kiran that the is court is not giving a date for the hearing of her appeals. Veronica realizes that Kiran needs a good barrister, and they don't have one as they don't have any money. Veronica enlists her brother, Lord Edward Foster QC (Robbie Coltrane), a highly respected Queen's Counsel, to aide in Kiranjit's appeal. Edward, in turn, realizes Kiranjit's importance to his sister and the importance of her case. His sister's request has additional meaning given that Veronica would not let him help her with her own appeal due to their on-off relationship since childhood. Before Kiranjit's appeal hearing the South Hall Black Sisters bring her plight to the attention of the media by organizing rallies to gather public support for her freedom. O'Connell comes forward and admits that he lied on stand, the night he arrested Kiran she was stunned and not in her senses. Her case goes for appeals in July 1992. Kiran is ultimately freed by the judicial system in a landmark case called "R vs Ahluwalia", redefining provocation in cases of battered women in the UK. The term provocation was restricted to a specific event of violence but is now changed to include the systematic torture and repression over a prolonged period of time which leads to a sudden burst of anger and frustration over an unexpected event. She was re-convicted from murder to manslaughter; but released with time served. Kiranjit is reunited with her children and subsequently given an award by Cherie Blair, for her crusade against domestic violence. At last, she leads a happy life with her children in UK.

When a novelist seeks inspiration by urging his wife to have an affair, the line between his story and reality is blurred. A story of Shaukat, a gifted writer who's reeling from the failure of his last novel. Antara, his reserved and sensitive wife supports him indisputably. To regain his command on writing, Shaukat decides to incorporate his story into his real life and subsequently slot the twists and turns of the real life incidents into his story. Author Shaukat Vashisht lives a wealthy life-style in India with his wife, Antara, who is a College Teacher. Shaukat achieves fame when he is nominated for the Booker prize, and goes on to win it. His publishers, hoping that they have unleashed a goldmine, are disappointed with his subsequent works, and soon Shaukat is depressed to such an extent that he almost gives up writing. Then he decides to write a story on a woman named Tamanna, and figures that he will base this story on none other than Antara herself. For this purpose he starts to make note of her every movement, and it is then that he finds out that she has an admirer in fellow-teacher, Yash, a dashing young man - with a bright future ahead of him. Shaukat also finds out that Antara has never mentioned Yash to him, nor has she informed Yash that she is married. Manoj travels to Calcutta and stays with his college friend Alok (Sameer Dharmadhikari). Manoj gets Alok to draft a letter to his friends asking for Rs 5-7 thousand each to create a corpus of roughly Rs 30-40 thousand to restart his business. Manoj feels ashamed about begging his friends for money. Alok is married to Sheela (Mouli Ganguly). Sheela wants Alok to give Manoj a job in his production company, but Alok says Manoj is not fit for production work. Manoj wants to visit Neerja, his ex-flame. Alok strongly advises against it. Alok says that Neeja spurned Manoj's love and married someone else for money. Sheela says that visiting Neerja is Manoj's choice. Alok says that it took months for Manoj to recover from his breakup with Neerja, and that he should not relive those memories. Since it is raining that day, Alok gives his raincoat to Manoj. Sheela also gives her mobile device to Manoj, just in case he needs any help and wants to call Alok. Sheela asks Manoj to take a gift for Neerja. Since Manoj doesn't have any money, she offers a Saree that she had received as gift from someplace else. Manoj was in love and was to marry Neerja (Aishwarya), but her mother preferred her to marry someone wealthier, in Calcutta. Manoj starts meeting his classmates and some give him some money, and some don't. After completing his tasks for the day, Manoj heads to Neerja's. Neerja opens the door and is looking slightly shabby. Manoj removes his raincoat and hangs it on the wall. The home is full of antique furniture. And there is no electricity in the house, which Neerja claims is due to the rain. There are no servants in the house, and Neerja claims that they are off for their afternoon siesta. Neerja claims that her husband is in Japan in relation to his business. She claims that her husband tours a lot, but she doesn't like to travel. Neerja refuses to open doors as she claims that her husband is very possessive about her and cannot stand her spending time with another man. She says that if she opens the doors, the news will reach her any ways. Manoj arrived around 2 PM. At 2:45 PM Neerja makes a cup of tea for him. Neerja used to live in the same village as Manoj, before she came to the city. Manoj tells Neerja that he runs a TV serial production company. He had come to Calcutta for a meeting with DoorDarshan. He hasn't married yet. Manoj says that a developer bought their land and constructed a 6-floor building on the plot and gave them 2 floors in exchange. It's a luxury apartment. Manoj claims that he has a secretary, when Sheela calls on her mobile phone to check on Manoj. He says that the mobile belongs to him. Neerja realizes that Manoj hasn't had any lunch yet. She doesn't have any groceries in the house and decides to go to the shop to buy some food items. After Neerja leaves for shopping, the owner of the house (Annu Kapoor) drops by & tells Manoj about Neerja's pathetic life. Her husband is a drunk & the house is in debt & both are about to be evicted. To earn some money, Neerja has sublet the main room to a furniture renter, who converted it into a warehouse. The furniture is rented to movies for the day and returned to the room by night. They haven't even got the money to pay their electricity bills. Her husband was fired from multiple jobs for doing fraudulent activities at work. Manoj gives all the borrowed money of Rs 12,000 to pay for next 3 months rent but keeps the facade with Neerja. Neerja owed rent for the last 10 months, but Manoj begs the owner of the house to consider the part payment and to allow her to stay. He also gives his address and phone number to the owner and asks him to call before he takes any drastic action with Neerja. Manoj finally goes inside the rest of the rooms and realizes that everything that the owner told him is the truth. He comes face to face with Neerja's abject poverty. The owner leaves and then Neerja returns from the grocery store. Neerja says that the company is giving her husband a new flat and that she will shift in 2-3 days. The flat is the on the 7th floor and measures 3500 square feet. Neerja asks Manoj not to tell anyone back home that he met her. After a little more banter, Manoj bids goodbye to Neerja and goes back to Alok's home. They both don't share their phone numbers with each other. Neerja says that her new phone will be available in a few days and Manoj says that she doesn't remember his number as the phone stays with his secretary. When he comes home, he finds Neerja's jewelry in his raincoat which she has put there upon reading his letter to his friends to borrow money.

When Balraj, a London barrister of Indian origin, visits Amritsar for a friend's wedding, he brings along his sister Kiran and his American friend, William Darcy (Martin Henderson). While there, they make the acquaintance of Mr. and Mrs. Bakshi and their four daughters, Jaya, Lalita, Maya, and Lakhi ("Lucky"). Balraj and Jaya (Namrata Shirodkar) feel an immediate attraction, but Lalita (Aishwarya Rai) is offended by William's condescending attitude toward India and Indians, and even his attempts to apologize all seem to go wrong. After the wedding, William wants to visit Goa, to see whether his company should build a hotel there. Balraj and Kiran will be going with him, and Balraj invites Jaya to accompany them. Mr. Bakshi (Anupam Kher) observes that this would hardly be proper, but Mrs. Bakshi is very eager to see all of her daughters married and suggests that Lalita go along as Jaya's chaperon. While in Goa, Lalita quarrels with William, saying that a beach resort in Goa is nothing but a way "to go to India without having to deal with Indians". But, during a concert by Ashanti, she meets, and is drawn to, Johnny Wickham (Daniel Gillies), the son of the nurse who helped raised William, who explains that William kicked him out of the Darcy household as soon as the elder Mr. Darcy died. Back in Amritsar, the Bakshi family is visited by Mr. Kohli, a distant cousin who has emigrated to "Am'Rica" (as he calls it) and become a successful accountant in California. He is very proud of his "green card", and very dismissive of India. But one thing that he cannot find in his new country is a nice, old-fashioned, subservient Indian girl, and, as he puts it, "No life -- without wife." Johnny turns up again and attends a dance with Lalita. William tries to warn Lalita that Johnny is not all he seems, but she is too angry to listen. Lakhi is also very taken with the handsome Johnny. At a family dinner, Mr. Kohli continues to speak disparagingly of India, when, much to Lalita's surprise, William objects that he has seen much to admire in India; in particular, he thinks rather more of the loving Bakshi family than his own. Mrs. Bakshi speaks openly of her plans for her daughter's future lucrative marriages, to her daughters' embarrassment, despite her husband's attempt to change the subject. Mr. Kohli proposes to Lalita, who turns him down in no uncertain terms, to Mrs. Bakshi's dismay; but Mr. Bakshi is proud of his daughter. The next day, Balraj claims a sudden change in plans is forcing his party to return to London early. The Bakshis hear that Mr. Kohli has proposed to Lalita's best friend, Chandra Lamba (Sonali Kulkarni), and that she has accepted. There will be a small wedding here, and a larger one in America. That evening, Johnny claims that he has to meet some friends in another village and leaves as well. When all the visitors have left, both Jaya and Lalita are disappointed. Neither Balraj nor Johnny are keeping their promises to stay in touch by e-mail. Lakhi does not tell anyone that Johnny is answering her emails. Mr. Kohli, for all his vulgarity, has a good heart, and sends four tickets to Los Angeles (via London) for Mrs. Bakshi and three of her daughters to attend the wedding. In London, they visit Kiran, but Balraj, it appears, is in N.Y., where their parents are introducing him to some marriageable girls. At Heathrow Airport, the travelers run into William, who is taking the same flight. He offers to trade his first-class seat with Mrs. Bakshi, which lets him sit next to Lalita. Impressed with his kindness, she finally has a polite conversation with him. He tells her he is glad that Johnny Wickham has not stayed in touch with her, as he is a 'nasty piece of work,' and discusses his own and Balraj's problems of parental influence. Mr. Kohli is having his wedding at one of the Darcy family hotels, and there we meet William's unpleasant mother, who says that they have lost a fortune over William taking Lalita's words to heart and passing on the Goa resort idea. William's young sister, Georgina ("Georgie") then adds that William has been telling her many nice things about Lalita. Lalita and William are soon dating, but at the wedding, Mrs. Darcy introduces Anne, the vapid, well-connected woman that she wants him to marry, as Darcy's girlfriend. After the ceremony, Georgie tells Lalita how William had advised his friend Balraj not to marry an Indian woman with a horrid, fortune-hunting mother. Lalita realizes that Georgie is talking about Jaya, and when immediately after Darcy tries to deny any future with Anne and confess his love for Lalita, she blows up completely at him. "Only you could say you love me and insult me at the same time!" she says. He admits having a part in breaking up Jaya and Balraj and she angrily walks away from him. Darcy tries to see Lalita the next day, only to find the Bakshis have already left for London. In London, Lakhi leaves "to go shopping", but instead goes off to meet Johnny Wickham and does not come home that night, sending a note telling her family who she is with. The Bakshi family is still in shock when William shows up to apologize to Lalita the next day. He says that he has apologized to Balraj, too; that he simply hadn't realized that Jaya was really in love. But Lalita has no time for this; she tells him how Lakhi has run off with Johnny. Darcy is thunderstruck and tells her that Johnny got Georgina pregnant when she was only sixteen, and attempted to elope with her for her money, and that Darcy had been "left to pick up the pieces". They both go to track them down, first to Johnny's home on a canal boat, then to the London Eye, and, finally, into a Bollywood cinema. There, William and Johnny get into a fist fight in sync with the fist fight on the screen, and, as William and Lalita are pulling Lakhi away, Johnny's big mouth makes it clear even to Lakhi that he's worthless. When they get back to the family, everyone's relieved, and they are greeted with the news that Balraj is there, that he has proposed to Jaya and that she has accepted. Back in Amritsar, it seems the whole city is there to celebrate the double wedding.

A woman decides to marry her childhood friend, after getting her heart broken by her sweetheart. 'Kyun! Ho Gaya Na' is a situational romantic comedy -- a simple story about love and life. Diya Malhotra is an idealistic, sensitive girl whose childhood was spent in the coffee plantation town of Coorg. Her father, who single-handedly raised Diva after his wife passed away, decides that Diva should travel to Mumbai to help his friend Raj Chauhan, a confirmed bachelor, run a small orphanage that he has in his home. Diva will stay at the home of the Khannas, who also are friends of her father. Diva then meets Arjun Khanna, a seemingly free-spirited, fun-loving, adventurous guy. The two soon realize, however, that they will be staying in the same house since the Khannas, her father's friends, are Arjun's parents. The friendship that develops between Diya and Arjun and their opposing views on love and marriage are at the heart of this film. —Sujit R. Varma Diya Malhotra lives with her dad on a farmhouse. Binodini is a young widow who lives with a woman and her son, Mahendra, who had once refused to marry her. Their lives are thrown into disarray when there is deceit and adultery between Binodini, Mahendra, his wife and his friend. The book, Binodini, is the story of a young woman, who is left to her own devices when her sickly husband dies soon after they are married. She returns to her village and lives there for a couple of months until she sees one of her relations passing by there on her way to somewhere else. Binodini hails the woman and the two soon agree that it would be best if Binodini came to live with the woman and her son, Mahendra (who, by the way, was one of the first to see Binodini's photo when she was unwed and up for grabs yet refused her on account of his being "unready for marriage"). Now, when the two arrive the woman's son and his new bride are in the throes of passion, constantly sneaking off to be alone together; this infatuation does not last long, however, when Mahendra begins to see that his wife's friend, Binodini, is more his type. The story details the lives of these three and Mahendra's best friend as they deal with certain issues as distrust, adultery, lies, and numerous fallings-out between them. A few months later Ashalata gets pregnant, and the family gets the news that Binodini has been widowed only after a year's marriage. Rakesh promises that if she sends Raj to India, he will find a suitable match for him. Dr. Malhotra argues with Raj that he is the only cousin brother in the family and hence his presence is needed at her engagement, with Dr. Malhotra promising to come for the wedding. Raj knows that Rakesh will try to fix him up with a girl and says that he loves his freedom too much. Nikki calls Raj and says that she does not want to get married, and she is being forced. She says that only Raj can stand up to Rakesh. At the airport, Raj finds that he was a late show, and his seat was assigned to another lady. Raj lies to the lady that he has a 3-year-old son who has a rare heart disease and its imperative that he gets on the flight. The lady takes sympathy on Raj and gives her seat to Raj, taking the next available flight. Once in India, Raj narrates a story to Rakesh that Nikki's fiance Ajay is gay and has a boyfriend in the US, and he is leaving him to marry Nikki. Ajay still loves the boyfriend, but did not have the courage to speak to his parents about him and hence is being forced to marry Nikki. Rakesh is now convinced that Nikki cannot marry Ajay. He reaches home to call off the wedding. Nikki is shocked and tells Raj that she loves Ajay. Raj is forced to admit the truth to Rakesh and apologizes to Ajay, who is a really nice guy. Raj finds himself pushed towards marriage by his overzealous uncle Rakesh Sharma (Satish Shah) who is also Nikki's father. His uncle's employee, Namrata (Aishwarya Rai) chaperons Raj on a series of set-ups/dates, all of which he deliberately sabotages. Turns out Namrata was the lady whom Raj lied to at the airport. She was in the US to bring back some dresses for Nikki. And due to Raj's antics, she got late returning to India and arrived just before the engagement with the dresses and jewelry that Nikki wanted to wear on the occasion. Naturally Namrata is taken aback when she realizes that Raj told her a blatant lie just for an airline seat. Still Namrata is forced to spend time with Raj as Rakesh has promised her a promotion if Raj gets married during his trip to India. Raj says that he is uncomfortable meeting the women in a family setting and Namrata convinces Rakesh that the meetings could be private. The first girl is Rachna (Divya Palat), whom Raj meets in a temple and says that he believes in re-incarnation. He says that in their previous life, they had a kid, and they died when they fell off a mountain in Kedarnath. She was named Savitri back then. Raj claims that Savitri's body was found 3 days later, and he never re-married. Rachna gets really spooked by this story and runs away. The next girl is Poonam (Gautami Kapoor), who he meets at a club. Poonam breaks down when her ex Vikram (Eijaz Khan) enters the club. Raj and Namrata help Poonam get back together with her ex. During the course of the wedding ceremonies, Raj discovers that he is falling for Namrata. After some deliberation, he decides to tell her, but to his surprise, he discovers she has a 7-year-old son, Aditya (Master Parth Dave). Raj is confused but forms a strong fatherly relationship with Aditya. Raj's uncle informs him that Namrata's husband Sanjeev (Arbaaz Khan) disappeared right before Aditya's birth and has never returned to his son or wife. Finding a letter that Raj had written confessing his feelings, Namrata gets upset thinking Raj tried to use her son to get close to her. She attempts to distance herself from him, but a stubborn Raj follows her to Aditya's boarding school with Principal Ms. Loccolith Lobo (Tannaz Irani), having promised the boy to pose as his father. Raj helps Aditya look good in front of his friends and protects his self-confidence. On being prodded by Raj, she tells him that her husband Sanjeev left her for another woman while she was pregnant. Namrata and Raj begin to bond. After some months, Raj decides to introduce Namrata to his mother. A short while later, he finds out that Sanjeev has returned and is looking to reconcile with Namrata. Namrata is aghast and makes it clear that she does not want anything to do with him. Sanjeev says that he left for US with a girl to make money. But after 4 years the girl left with all the money. Sanjeev then spent the next 3 years working hard and getting himself back up, so he could come back and claim his family back. Sanjeev refuses to leave, becoming stubborn and persistent, threatening her with a lawsuit for custody of Aditya. This puts Namrata on the path of reconciliation with Sanjeev. Raj's family feels Sanjeev has no right on Namrata and Aditya, but the decision belongs to her and her alone. After a chance meeting at a temple, Raj invites Sanjeev to his home for Nikki's wedding. Aditya is present and is affectionate with Raj, calling him "Dad." Sanjeev becomes jealous and angry, insulting Raj and his family. After witnessing Sanjeev's bad behavior towards Raj, Namrata finally gets the courage to stand up to him. She publicly tells him off and also admits that she is in love with Raj. Sanjeev is ashamed and disappears once again warning Raj to not make the mistakes he made with his family. Six months later Raj and Namrata decide to get married and are soon expecting a child.

When he refuses to pay for Laxmi's husband Ramnath (who is an alcoholic and a gambler) who must be operated, she leaves the house with her children. Ramnath dies. Laxmi spots and takes in an orphaned boy Suraj. Her daughter Radha (Madhuri Dixit) forms a sisterly bond with him, named Suraj (Salman Khan). Suraj, a famous and popular singer is grateful to Radha for contributing to his success by her support. Gopal is now a rich businessman. Mona is Gopal's assistant, who wears skimpy clothes and tries to seduce Gopal. Gopal is ultra conservative in his views and doesn't like her behavior. Laxmi dies in an accident (while she was coming in an auto to meet Dev, who was also on his death bed). Dev survives and Radha and Prashant are taken to live with Gopal and Nita. Gopal (Shahrukh Khan) has been in love with Radha (Madhuri Dixit) ever since they were children. As adults, Gopal proposes to Radha and she accepts. Radha goes to invite Suraj to the wedding and finds out that he had an accident and has lost his voice. When it comes to Suraj, Radha forgets everything, even Gopal. Turns out Suraj was playing a prank and Gopal sees first hand the bond between Suraj and Radha. wedding happens. Radha tells she loves Laxmi and Prashant only. Gopal is hurt as she didn't mention him. Gopal wants to be intimate with Radha, but in the joint family setup he is frequently interrupted, leading to sexual frustration. There are two things Gopal disapproves of, after their marriage: Radha's unemployed younger brother Prashant (Atul Agnihotri) who lives with them, and Suraj (Salman Khan), Radha's childhood friend. He doesn't like that Radha is always on the phone with Suraj (even when they are just about to have sex). Gopal plans to take Radha to Switzerland to be away from the family. But Suraj was headed there for a business meeting and Radha invites him to join them. Gopal changes his destination without telling Suraj to enjoy some peace and quiet. Suraj is quite handsome and a very famous singer. Radha, who is very fond of him, talks to him quite often on the phone. The hardworking Gopal, who loves his wife dearly, wants complete attention from her. When he feels Radha gives undue attention to her friend Suraj, he grows gradually very suspicious (He touches her freely, changes shirts in front of her and she gives Gopal's shirts to him) and believes that Radha and Suraj are secretly seeing each other (they talk on the phone when GOpal leaves for office). Prashant needed some cash to buy a 2nd hand motorbike. Gopal finds cash missing from his wallet and admonishes Prashant for taking it by himself, without permission. Prashant protests, but Gopal is in no mood to listen. Turns out Nita took the money for her college fees. Radha asks Prashant to fix the bathroom light. When he is in there, Nita comes for a bath and Prashant covers his eyes, but says nothing. Nita finds out when the bath is complete and complains to Gopal. Gopal hits Prashant and throws him out of the house. Radha laments her woes to Suraj and asks him to take care of Prashant. Gopal overhears this conversation and feels bad. Radha and Gopal visit Suraj's song recording and Gopal has a dream about Radha dancing with Suraj on his song. Gopal throws Radha out of the house after his jealousy completely overwhelms him. Radha-- though she deeply loves her husband-- has never fully understood the turmoil he is going through. On Radha's Bday, Suraj hosts a party and invites Gopal to it. Gopal is outraged. She receives a notice of divorce from him and is devastated. Prashant and Suraj want to talk to Gopal, but Radha forbids it. Finally, Suraj arranges to meet Gopal, who arrives with a loaded gun. Suraj is taken aback upon finding that his platonic relationship with his best friend Radha has caused Gopal such misunderstanding. They argue and Gopal finally leaves. Suraj talks to Radha, but she thinks it is entirely her fault. If she had understood that her husband disapproved of her close relationship to her friend, she would have never seen Suraj again. Suraj leaves Radha and promises to never see her again. He talks to his blind girlfriend Suman (Aishwarya Rai, in a cameo) about what has happened. Suman finally talks reason into Gopal. Once he realizes his misapprehensions and the purity of Radha's heart, he leaves to Suraj's house to take his wife back home. At the moment Radha tries to commit suicide through sleeping pills, Gopal arrives and stops her just in time. They make up and visit Suraj on the set of his latest stage show. Gopal apologizes to Suraj, and everything ends on a happy note.

But she finds shelter in the character played by Anil Kapoor. —Gonz30 Naive yet bold and daring, Preeti Virat, comes forward as a witness to heinous assault carried by Bhavani Choudhry and his men on a person who owes them money. Bhavani is arrested and held for trial. This angers the Choudhry family. The victim is threatened with dire consequences, and he withdraws the complaint, and as a result Bhavani is released and all charges are dropped. Preeti is then raped by one of the Choudhry men, and subsequently her very own family disowns her. She finds shelter with another do-gooder, Avinash, who even takes her to his apartment. But the story does not end here, for the neighborhood is soon in an uproar over her, and want her to leave. The only solution is that Preeti marry Avinash, she agrees to do so, and then finds out that there is two children who called Avinash "daddy", and she does not know if there is another woman or even a wife involved. Two young women with differing views on love find themselves with three suitors. Meanwhile, Meenu meets and falls for a businessman with a passion for poetry, Srikanth (Abbas). Manohar goes to Madras to make a film and prove himself worthy of Sowmya, and Srikanth's business collapses, and he also departs to find someone who will lend him the money to pay off his investors. Then the women's grandfather dies, and his estate goes to their uncle who all but turns them out. They move to the city, where Sowmya gets a job as a telephone operator at a software company, but works her way up to being a programmer. She continues to meet Manohar, but begins to suspect that he thinks she is unlucky. After a few false starts, he is finally filming his movie, and it stars Nandini (Pooja Batra), a famous female action heroine, who is another cause for Sowmya's discontent. Meenu is going crazy in the apartment, and Captain Bala gets her into music school. He also arranges for her to meet with her love, Srikanth, who promptly disappears again. She is recognized for her voice, and begins recording music. At one recording session, she runs into Srikanth who is there with his fiancee, the daughter of the man who is bailing out his company. Meenu is so thunderstruck that Srikanth is marrying someone else, that she walks out into a storm and falls down a manhole. Captain Bala rescues her. In the hospital, Meenu begins to realize all that Captain Bala has done for her. When Captain Bala introduces her to a young friend of his as a prospective husband, she sends the young man away, and confesses her love for the Captain. Manohar's movie comes out, and it's a success. He runs over to Sowmya's house to finally propose marriage, only to find she's planning on moving to California. He protests, they cry, and eventually she agrees to marry him. The movie ends with a double wedding, Captain Bala and Meenu, and Manohar and Sowmya.

Mansi, the daughter of a poor spiritual singer, and Manav, the son of a wealthy businessman, fall in love but the difference between their families rips them apart. It is announced that a young man named Sameer Rosselline (Salman Khan) will be arriving to stay with the Darbar family (Including the Grandmother (Zohra Sehgal), mother Amritaa (Smita Jaykar), brother Tarun (Vinay Pathak), brother Bhairaon (Kenny Desai) (his wife Pushpa), youngest brother Nilesh, sister Shilpa (Dimple Inamdar). Mahaveer's sister Kamna (Rekha Rao)), as he wants to grasp the intricacies of Indian classical music under the guidance of the Pundit. He is accommodated in Nandini's room, causing her to take a dislike to Sameer. Sameer speaks to his dead father via sounds of thunder in the atmosphere. His father warns him against going to this place to learn music. Sameer cannot understand why and is determined to learn from Mahaveer. Mahaveer wont take a fee for his teachings. But he reserves the right to ask for a Gurudakshina at any time in the future. Sameer has a jovial nature and befriends everyone in the house with his antics, except Nandini. At first the two tease and prank one another (Nandini teaches Sameer a prank Namaskar to make a fool out of him in front of Mahaveer. Sameer farts when he thinks he is alone, but Nandini sees this). Sameer tells Nandini that soon her love will take her to Italy (he reads her feet as a form of reading the future). They become friends and start spending even more time together in front of the entire family (in events, games, picnics etc). Nandini teaches Sameer the various Gujrati dance forms and they also play the game of statue. But soon enough they fall deeply in love. The two spend romantic moments during several family events, including weddings and festivals. Nandini's cousin Anu is getting married. Unknown to anyone in the family Anu had a boyfriend, but Anu pushes her away as he waited for too long and now she has been promised to someone else and she cannot go against the honor of her family. Nandini and Sameer flirt a lot during the wedding. Nandini slaps Sameer for frolicking with her publicly during the wedding. Due to this Sameer locks himself up in his room. Vanraj (son of advocate Vikramjeet (Rajeev Varma)) arrives at the wedding and falls in love with Nandini when she performs a dance for all the guests. Vanraj sends a marriage proposal to Nandini and the process is on. Nandini is worried that Sameer is involved in fun and games while Mahaveer and Amritaa are planning her wedding to Vanraj. Kamna finds out about the affair between Sameer and Nandini. Kamna hates Nandini and she is disrespectful towards her. Meanwhile Anu comes back after fighting with her in-laws. Bhairaon and Mahaveer rule that Anu has to go back to her husband's house, no matter what. Nandini stands up for Anu and says that she does not love her husband and should not be forced to return. But Mahaveer is adamant and tells Nandini not to interfere. Nandini and Sameer help Anu run away with her lover, but Kamna sees this. Bhairaon goes berserk and blames Mahaveer for this calamity. Mahaveer blames Bhairaon for not giving the right values to Anu. But Kamna interjects and tells Mahaveer that even Nandini is having an affair, so Mahaveer should not question others. The pair are caught rehearsing their wedding vows by the Pundit and he is enraged since he has already planned Nandini's wedding with Vanraj (Ajay Devgan), who had fallen in love with her during her cousin Anu's (Sheeba Chaddha) wedding. Sameer is banished from the household and the Pundit quits singing since he believes Nandini has brought shame to the family. Sameer is asked never to meet Nandini again (Mahaveer asks for this as his Gurudakshina). Although he eventually leaves for Italy, he writes letters to Nandini asking her to join him, but his letters do not reach her. After a futile suicide attempt (she cuts her wrists and bleeds off into the swimming pool), Nandini reluctantly weds Vanraj. He tries to consummate their marriage on their wedding night, but Nandini is disgusted by his approach and acts coldly towards him. He asks her for an explanation but she chooses to remain silent. Nandini finally receives Sameer's letters (The house servant delivers them to her, when she was already married and in her new house) and Vanraj walks in on her reading them. He is enraged and initially decides to return her to her parents, but soon realizes that since she is in love with another man, the right thing to do would be to unite the pair. Vanraj seeks his parents consent, which they give after disagreeing at first. Nandini and Vanraj arrive in Italy but come up against dead ends searching for Sameer. They almost find Sameer at a cafe, when they see a drawing from him in their guest book. Nandini chases after Sameer but nearly dies in the path of an oncoming tram. Vanraj saves Nandini.. They gradually become friends and start to enjoy each other's company. During their search, they are mobbed and Nandini is shot in the arm. Vanraj carries Nandini to the hospital in his arms and saves her life. Moved by Vanraj's gentleness and affection towards her, Nandini begins to warm up to him. Vanraj has to sell his wedding ring, as he had no money left for Nandini's hospital bills. Eventually, they are able to locate Sameer through his mother Zooni (Helen), and Vanraj dutifully arranges for their meeting on the night of Sameer's debut concert. He then bids goodbye to Nandini and walks away heartbroken. Upon meeting Sameer, she apologizes to him and tells him that she has come to love Vanraj. She reflects on the unwavering love and devotion that Vanraj has showered upon her throughout their relationship, and realizes that Vanraj is her true soul mate. Sameer realizes that she doesn't have that love for him which he saw in her long back. Heartbroken, Sameer lets her go back to Vanraj which she readily accepts and Sameer breaks down after she leaves and his mother consoles him. She runs back to Vanraj and he tells her that he cannot live without her. Vanraj adorns a Mangala Sutra around her neck and they embrace each other.

Rohan Khanna (Akshaye Khanna) is a jobless graduate living with his grandfather (Alok Nath) and his mother (Moushumi Chatterjee). Rohan has been tirelessly looking for a decent job without success. One day, Rohan's neighbor, Ranjit arrives to bring his parents to America. Ranjit lives in America, owns a motel, a home, a car, and is married to an American woman. He wishes to keep his parents in America to live in peace. After listening to Rohan's desire for a job, he suggests that Rohan should move to America. Ranjit promises Rohan success and Rohan is immediately persuaded. He tells his mother and grandfather of his wish and they are abruptly reminded of Rohan's late father, Balraj Khanna (Rajesh Khanna) who left his wife and son for America after a bitter argument with his father. In a bus accident, Balraj is killed leaving Rohan orphaned and his mother widowed. To avoid the same fate of his son, Rohan's grandfather prepares Rohan's visa for America. Rohan arrives in America and immediately meets Sardar Khan (Kader Khan), a Pakistani man who makes a living by driving a taxi. Rohan's good manners and friendly personality wins Sardar over as he drives Rohan to Ranjit's hotel. Rohan does not have any spare cash to pay Sardar so he asks Sardar to stay while he asks Ranjit for the taxi fare. He is shocked when Ranjit does not give him money or a place to stay saying that Rohan has to be able to help himself. Sardar overhears the two arguing. Rohan looks and sees that Ranjit's father and mother are working at the hotel and facing much verbal abuse from Ranjit's wife. This is not the peace that Ranjit had promised his parents. Sardar offers Rohan a place to stay much to the dismay of his roommate, Iqbal Singh (Jaspal Bhatti), a Punjabi man from India. Rohan is allowed to stay with Iqbal and Sardar with the persuasion of Chaurasia (Satish Kaushik. Chaurasia runs an Indian restaurant and betel leaf shop. Rohan is given a job as a taxi driver. One day, while making routes near the airport, he picks up a young Indian woman named Pooja (Aishwarya Rai). Pooja has just arrived in America to live with her older brother and his wife. Much to the shock of Pooja, her brother only brought her here because his boss had seen a picture of Pooja and had fallen in love with her. Pooja's brother insists that Pooja marry his boss and in anger, she leaves his home without money and no where to go. Rohan sees Pooja crying and he offers her a place to stay with Iqbal and Sardar. Iqbal and Sardar discover that Pooja and Rohan have brought happiness into their house and the give them not only a place in their home, but a place in their hearts. Iqbal, Sardar, and Chaurasia pitch in to provide jobs for both newcomers. They are also acquainted with PC Jack Patel (Paresh Rawal) who is a police inspector on weekdays and a Hindu priest on weekends. He observes both jobs faithfully by preserving American law and Hindu values. Both Pooja and Rohan begin to work at a Dunkin' Donuts but after a tussle with some customers who tried to harass Pooja, both are fired and without jobs. This protective relationship between Rohan and Pooja causes Pooja to fall in love with him deeply much to the happiness of Iqbal and Sardar. Rohan finds a job as a gas station employee and Pooja remains unemployed. One day at Chaurasia's restaurant, Rohan becomes frustrated with his lack of progress and Chaurasia advises Rohan to get a Green Card by marrying an NRI girl. Rohan and Pooja go to an Indian dance to search for an NRI girl much to Pooja's disapproval. There, Rohan meets the seductive Loveleen (Suman Ranganathan) and he falls in love with her immediately. Pooja, Iqbal, and Sardar do everything to keep Loveleen away from Rohan until Rohan becomes aggravated and tells the three to stay away from him and Loveleen. Iqbal tells Pooja to follow Rohan and Loveleen to Seaside Heights and declare her love for him. She is rejected by Rohan and he later tells her to stay away from him. Iqbal and Sardar accuse him of being consumed by money. Rohan tells them that they are jealous of his progress. Iqbal tells Rohan that one day he will regret his decision one day and come back to Pooja. Rohan leaves the house for Loveleen in rage. In order to forget Rohan, Pooja finds a job as a caretaker for a rich Indian man who is ill. We discover that this man is Balraj Khanna, Rohan's estranged father who has not died. Balraj has been living in New York with his son, Karan. Karan's mother left Balraj when Karan was very young. Karan has grown to be a spoiled and arrogant young man who is also friends with Loveleen. He consistently asks his father for money to spend for his enjoyment. He even took a loan from Marko, a dangerous drug dealer and Karan has not yet paid him back. In order to pay back his debts, he is assigned to transport drugs around the country. Balraj begins to take a liking to Pooja and considers her as a daughter. He wants to keep her in his home so he asks her to consider marrying Karan. Karan and Pooja are both against the idea. Meanwhile, Rohan is beginning to realize that Loveleen's American culture deeply goes against his and he begins to regret his decision. He becomes fed up with her ways and realizes he is really in love with Pooja. He leaves Loveleen with no where to go because of his poor decisions. Jack Patel forces Iqbal, Sardar, and Rohan to reconcile and they forgive Rohan for his mistakes. Rohan sets out to ask Pooja for forgiveness. She is in Springfield with Balraj at the moment and Rohan arrives there to meet her. After a confrontation between Rohan and Pooja, Rohan tells her that they will go back home to India together, hence Aa Ab Laut Chalen (Come, Let's Go Back). Pooja forgives Rohan and Rohan gives her a locket with a picture of his mother inside saying that it is a promise that he will marry her. Pooja tells Balraj that she has fallen in love with a man named Rohan and he encourages her love for him. Meanwhile, Karan becomes desperate for the money so he decides to marry Pooja. After violently urging her to marry him, her locket falls on the ground and Balraj picks it up. When handing it to her, he sees Rohan's mother, and his wife. He realizes that Rohan is his son but does not tell Pooja. After hearing that he is unemployed, he tells Pooja that he will give Rohan a job in his company. But he fears that his son will not accept him as a father though because he left him and his mother back in India. Rohan accepts the job and is deeply grateful to Balraj. He wishes for a chance to meet him. Balraj continues his generosity from afar by giving Rohan a $5000 bonus. Rohan returns to Ranjit's motel and frees Ranjit's parents by paying for their tickets to return to India. Ranjit is also arrested by Jack Patel for keeping the passports of his parents. Rohan spends the rest of his money by buying gifts for all his friends including Iqbal, Sardar, and Chaurasia. His mother is also happy to know that Rohan has found the love of his life and a decent job. One day, Rohan is invited to a party where that Balraj will attend. When Rohan meets Balraj, he is stunned to realize that Balraj is his father and very much alive. He reacts in anger and tells him that he has left his mother a widow and his son an orphan. Balraj openly confesses to everyone that he has left his wife and son in India and does not deserve everyone's respect. Balraj reveals that after he arrived in America, he went back to India to find his family but he could not. Hence, he married another woman. Rohan sill cannot bring himself to forgive his father because he has caused his mother's suffering. Balraj insists to speak to his wife to ask for forgiveness. Rohan calls his mother to tell her that her husband is still alive. She immediately forgives Balraj and asks them to come back to India. Karan emerges saying that if Balraj leaves for India, he has to leave his fortunes to Karan in America. Balraj refuses and tries to slap Karan but Karan stops him. Karan tries to slap Balraj but Rohan stops him. Rohan and Balraj embrace and Balraj tells Karan he will give all his property to him but he will not be his father. Balraj, Rohan, and Pooja all leave for India. They say their goodbyes to Iqbal and Sardar as well. Suddenly, PC Jack Patel arrives with Karan. Turns out that Karan has turned in important information about Marko to the officials. Karan tells Balraj that he does not want the wealth but he wants to return to India with the rest of his family. Rohan and Balraj accept Karan and the family leaves for India. We later see Rohan's mother welcoming Balraj, Rohan, Pooja, and Karan in their home and they finally live happily together.

Nachiappan (Nassar) is a wealthy and successful Indian American restaurateur based in Los Angeles, USA. He has two sons - Vishwanathan "Visu" (Prashanth) and Ramamoorthy "Ramu" (Prashanth) - who are identical twins. They both are medical students and spend their evenings helping out their father alongside the restaurant's chief cook, Juno (Senthil). One evening, when Visu & Ramu go to the airport to do their lunch supply to KLM staff, Visu sees an Indian family from Chennai - Madhumitha "Madhu" (Aishwarya Rai), her younger brother Madhesh (Raju Sundaram), and their grandmother Krishnaveny (Lakshmi) - having some problems with the immigration authorities. Visu pitches in to help and learns that they just flew in from India so that Krishnaveny can undergo a surgery to remove her brain tumor. After many confusions, the trio meets with Ramu also (Visu vanishes out of sight and the trio start following Ramu when they see and mistake him for Visu). The twins arrange for the three to reach their host. Krishnaveny is admitted in the hospital where Visu works as a resident doctor and the surgery is performed. Visu soon realizes that Krishnaveny is paralyzed as she was operated on the wrong side of her brain due to a mix-up with another patient. He appeals aggressively to the doctors and has the error corrected by another surgery, then spearheads an angry fight for compensation. The hospital compensates US$2 million to avoid a court case. Due to these actions, Madhu soon falls in love with Visu. Krishnaveny soon realizes that Madhu and Visu are in love and extends the family's stay in the USA. However, Nachiappan objects to the romance as he wants his sons to marry identical twin girls. In a flashback, it is shown that Nachiappan had an identical twin brother Pechiappan, who lives in Karaikudi and is a simpleton. They used to run a restaurant together with Nachiappan as cook and Pechiappan as cashier. Pechiappan made mistakes in bills and Nachiappan's wife corrected him. They both married for love in their youth, but Pechiappan's wife Sundarambal (Raadhika) tortured and abused Nachiappan's pregnant wife Meiyaththa (Geetha) (as a punishment for correcting her husband publicly) so badly (Meiyaththa was feeling breathless and Sundarambal refused to let Pechiappan to go to the market to get her a soda. Nachiappa was at the market, buying groceries for the restaurant.) that the latter died (After she went to the market to get her own soda) after giving birth to Visu and Ramu. Nachiappan eventually left the house along with Visu and Ramu to prevent Pechiappan and Sundarambal from separating over Meiyaththa's death (the whole society blames Sundarambal for Meiyaththa's death and Sundarambal wants Pechiappa to split the property and leave, or else she will leave Pechiappa). Their mother wailed that as twins, if they had married sisters, they would have supported each other.. This is the root of Nachiappan's demand that Visu and Ramu should marry sisters. Krishnaveny decides to solve the problem by lying to Nachiappan that Madhu does have an identical twin named Vaishnavi, who was raised separately in an orthodox Brahmin household. The reason for their separation is claimed that "having twins would bring bad luck on their family". Nachiappan falls for the lie and leaves for India along with Visu, Ramu, Juno, Krishnaveny, Madhu and Madhesh in order to "meet" Vaishnavi and fix the marriages of Visu and Ramu with Madhu and Vaishnavi respectively. as Vellaiappan (S. V. Shekhar) is Madhumita's dad. Krishnaveny convinces Madhumita to spend some time with Ramu. She will arrange for the wedding with Visu and when done, they will tell Nachiappan that Vaishnavi has died or eloped. Krishnaveny has Madhu pose as Vaishnavi, who contrary to Madhu, is very demure and traditional in nature. The plan is that Ramu will reject a "desi" girl like Vaishnavi. Ramu immediately falls in love with Vaishnavi, unaware that she is Madhu. Madhesh uses sophisticated computer 3D images to give the impression that Madhu and Vaishnavi are 2 different girls. Nachiappan insists that both weddings take place on the same date. So, Krishnaveny's plan goes for a toss. Meanwhile, Pechiappan, whose marriage with Sundarambal has worsened due to the latter's inability to have children, attempts suicide. Nachiappan rescues him and hatches a plan to unite both the families through Visu's and Ramu's marriage plan. Nachiappan impersonates Pechiappan and leaves for Karaikudi, where with his business sense and practical nature, he rescues Pechiappan's failing restaurant business and eventually reforms Sundarambal as well (He defends Sundarambal when the villagers pressure Pechiappan to marry again, as his wife is barren. He says his wife tolerates his flaws and so, he will tolerate hers). Pechiappan takes Nachiappan's place and stays with Visu and Ramu. Eventually, Madhu, realizing that Ramu is madly in love with her alter-ego, decides to stop acting as Vaishnavi as she feels she is hurting Ramu's as well as Visu's feelings through her act. Visu too finds out in parallel that Vaishnavi does not exist (That she was a computer generated 3D image by Madhesh). Enraged, Visu and his family immediately leave Madhu's house, but Ramu tells him that Madhu had lied due to her love for him and convinces him to reconcile with her. Ramu further manages to convince his father, unaware that he is his uncle Pechiappan, to get Visu and Madhu married. When Nachiappan realizes the truth and finds out that Visu and Madhu are getting married, he immediately rushes to Chennai with Sundarambal and stops the wedding. At this point, it is revealed that both Nachiappan and Pechiappan had impersonated each other in order to reunite both the families. Sundarambal manages to convince Nachiappan to get Visu and Madhu married since Madhu, by posing as Vaishnavi, had done the same thing that Nachiappan and Pechiappan did. Visu and Madhu get married and the movie ends with their reception, with Madhesh entertaining the couple and guests with computer-generated special effects.
