Ray Keene (John Cusack); a high school gym teacher, ex-cop and a widower; realises the need to bond with his son; Chris (Jamie Anderson) when the latter is caught smoking marijuana. On their hiking trip into the wilderness, they come across Frank Carden (Morgan Freeman), a professinal assasin who is being driven through the wilderness by the marshals. However his men rescue him from the marshals. Confusion takes the precedence but Ray does his best to keep his son away from trouble. Will Ray successfully escape from this uninvited trouble or fall prey at the hands of the assasin?

Tony Thompson [Jonathon Lipnicki] is lonely and friendless. His parents, Bob and Dottie, have just moved him from San Diego, California to Scotland, and the two McAshton boys, Nigel [Iain De Caestecker] and Flint [Scott Fletcher], are making fun of him at his new school because of his obsession with vampires. Unfortunately, Nigel and Flint are the grandsons of Lord McAshton, Bob's boss. One night, a bat flies into Tony's room. The bat is Rudolph Sackville-Bagg [Rollo Weeks], vampire, and he's in a bad way. He can't fly, and the vampire hunter Rookery [Jim Carter] is looking for him. Rudolph desperately needs blood and asks Tony to lead him to a cow. While Tony waits for Rudolph to finish his dinner, Rookery attempts to run Tony over with his vampire-hunting mobile, but Rudolph saves him just in time. Tony and Rudolph are now tit-for-tat, each having saved the other. They decide to become friends. Rudolph sleeps the next day in Tony's toybox but is gone when Tony gets home from school. Rudolph shows up again that night, asking about a picture Tony drew of an amulet he saw in a dream, the amulet of Attamon, made by the Great Magician from a piece of the comet of Attamon. Tony offers to help Rudolph find it because it could mean the end of a curse that causes Rudolph and his family to remain vampires. Unfortunately, Rookery is also seeking the amulet because, used in another way, it can send all the vampires straight to hell. Suddenly, Rudolph's family shows up...father Frederick, mother Freda, sister Anna, and brother Gregory. Frederick is not happy that his son has befriended a human. Just then, Rookery shows up and starts firing stakes at the vampire family. Tony cuts the hose between Rookery's stakegun and his pneumatic air supply. The vampires and Tony take refuge in an underground crypt, and Tony has a vision in which he sees a woman covering the body of the Great Magician with a blanket bearing a crest flanked by two stags and a banner reading "Sola animo at manuforti." Later that night, Tony and Rudolph pay a visit to the McAshton boys. Tony presents himself as the Lord of the Underworld and Rudolph as "the fiendish friend of Tony Thompson," and orders the boys to treat Tony with respect or else they will be bat-bait. The next day at school, the McAshton boys trip all over themselves to be nice to Tony. It appears that Tony's problems with the McAshton boys are over. However, his problems with the McAshtons are just beginning. That afternoon at tea, Tony's dad shows him a picture of the McAshton crest. Lo and behold, it is the one from Tony's vision. Later that evening, Tony goes to the crypt to tell Rudolph of his discovery, only to find Rookery there. Rookery lowers a bright light into the crypt, but Tony throws a rock at it and breaks the bulb. Unfortunately, Rudolph's father takes the full brunt of the light and is severely weakened. After fortifying their dad on some cowblood, the vampire family moves into Tony's cellar in order to hide from Rookery. During the night, as Tony tries to sleep, Anna [Anna Popplewell] comes into his room. She gives him a good luck charm (a dead mouse) from the old country and tells him to whistle if he should ever need her help. It's Saturday morning, and Tony goes to work with his dad, hoping to learn more about the McAshton crest and the whereabouts of the amulet. Unfortunately, Rookery is also there, and Lord McAshton is telling him about the family history. It seems that the woman in Tony's vision, the one in which he sees her covering the body of the Great Magician with a blanket that bears the McAshton crest, was actually Lord McAshton's ancestor, Elizabeth, and the Great Magician was the vampire Von Sackville-Bagg. Even more important is the fact that Elizabeth is wearing the amulet of Attamon in a family portrait and was probably buried with it. Rookery asks where she is buried, so Lord McAshton takes him to the family crypt. They open her coffin, but it is empty. Most likely, she was buried elsewhere, but where? Tony, who has been watching from a balcony, suddenly falls off...right into the coffin. Rookery, who has also been after Tony, closes the lid. Tony can't get out, but he remembers his good luck mouse and whistles for Anna. Although it is daylight, Rudolph and Anna cover themselves with a blanket and helmets and go to Tony. A mouse leads the three of them to a secret passage in which they find the real coffin of Elizabeth McAshton and Von Sackville-Bagg, but the amulet isn't there. Suddenly, Tony has another vision of Elizabeth burying the stone under the floorboards of her room...which is now Tony's room. Rudolph and Tony go to Tony's bedroom and start prying up the floorboards, but Rookery is wise to them. When Tony refuses to hand over the stone, Rookery takes Tony, stone and all, for a ride in his vampiremobile. As they drive along, they are attacked by a herd of flying vampire cows (the cows on which Rudolph and his family have been feeding) who cover Rookery's windshield with cowpies. Meanwhile, Frederick and Freda realize that tonight is the night that the Attamon comet will cross the moon, and all the vampires must be called to unite on the cliffs. Frederick is still too weak to fly, so they introduce themselves to Tony's parents and invite them to view the comet, too, using their car to drive out there. The entire vampire clan is gathered on the cliff, but where is the amulet? At the last minute, Rudolph and Tony fly in. Tony gives the amulet to Frederick who says the magic words. A red light descends from the comet, a red fog creeps over the vampires, and they all disappear. Epilogue: It is some weeks later. Tony and his parents are at the market in town when a new family moves in. It is the Sackville-Baggs, but they are human now. Ever-so-virginal Tanya Robertson [Madchen Amick] is working at the local theater in Travis, Indiana when sleepwalker Charles Brady [Brian Krause], a new student who just transferred from Paradise Falls, Ohio, comes to see the double bill (They Bite and Scream Dream). She's pretty, he's cute; they make a date to shoot photos together at Homeland Cemetery. While driving home from school, Charles is stopped by his English teacher, Mr Fallows [Glenn Shalix], who tries to blackmail Charles on grounds that there is no such place as Paradise Falls in Ohio and that Charles' transcripts are fake. Charles responds by ripping off Fallows' hand and killing him. Charles continues on, driving at breakneck speed past Sheriff Andy Simpson [Dan Martin]. Charles is having fun trying to outrun the law, until Andy's cat Clovis pops his head up and looks out the window. Charles' face suddenly shifts into his catform and then back to human, confusing Andy. When it looks like Charles isn't going to outrun Andy, he pulls off the road and makes his car go invisible. However, Clovis can still see Charles, which upsets Charles greatly. When Andy finally gives up the chase, Charles makes his car turn from blue to red and drives home. Cats are beginning to amass in the Brady's yard. They've set traps, but some cats seem impervious to them. 'It's starting again,' Charles tells his mom, remembering all the previous places they've tried to live but been discovered and driven out. Mary Brady's [Alice Krige] concern, however, is with the fact that she is starving. When is Charles going to bring her the nourishment she needs? 'Tomorrow,' Charles promises. Tanya is looking forward to her date with Charles. She's even packed a picnic lunch, along with a bottle of wine which she hides from her parents. As Charles makes grave rubbings, Tanya takes photos of both the graves and of Charles. Everything is hunkydory until, while engaged in a bit of kissing, Charles starts to suck out Tanya's breath. Tanya manages to clout him in the head with her camera, but he doesn't stay knocked out for long. When he tries again to steal her breath, she skewers his eyeball with a corkscrew. Meanwhile, Charles' car has turned back to its original color, just as Andy and Clovis drive by. When Andy stops to investigate, Tanya comes running out of the cemetery, Charles in pursuit. As Andy tries to calm Tanya down, Charles rams a pencil into Andy's ear. Charles attempts once more to take away Tanya's breath, but Andy shoots him in the back. Undaunted, Charles takes the gun from Andy and shoots him with it. Back to Tanya. Just when it looks like Charles is going to win, Clovis leaps at Charles' head and begins biting him. Tanya climbs in the squad car, locks all the doors, and frantically tries to get a message through to the dispatcher. Charles manages to get the cat off his face and speeds away in his blue car. The police arrive [look for Stephen King's cameo as the cemetery caretaker]) and take Tanya home. They don't quite buy her story about Charles arriving in a red car and leaving in a blue car nor about his face changing, but they do take her camera to develop the pictures she took of Charles. Charles is in a bad way. When he gets home, his mother tries to care for him, but she also has troubles. The yard is full of cats, and now the police have arrived, looking for Charles. She decides that the best course of action is to make the car, Charles, and herself invisible, just as the police break down her front door. While Tanya languishes in a bubblebath, Mary Brady comes to the Robertsons' front door, bearing a bouquet of roses. When Mr Robertson [Lyman Ward] tries to turn her away, Mary breaks the vase and cuts his face with the glass. When Mrs Robertson [Cindy Pickett] comes in from the kitchen to see what all the commotion is about, Mary tosses her out the window. When Deputy Horace [Monty Bane] comes in from the kitchen (where he was eating some of Mrs Robertson's home-cooked corn-on-the-cob), he fires at Mary but misses badly. When he returns to the kitchen to call headquarters for reinforcements, Mary stabs him in the back with an ear of corn. When Tanya comes downstairs to see what's going on, Mary knocks her out cold and carries her outside. More police are arriving, including Captain Ira Soames [Ron Perlman], State Police. He pointedly tells Mary to put Tanya down, so Mary bites off three of his fingers. Using Soames' gun, she shoots two of the patrol cars, causing them to burst into flames. She hoists Tanya into the third car and drives home. When she arrives, she finds that her house and yard are crawling with cats... millions and billions and trillions of cats. While Mary is forcing Tanya to dance with Charles, who is near death, the police are sneaking up on the Brady house. When Charles tries to feed on Tanya's breath, she pokes out Charles' eyes with her fingers. Mary is irate. 'You killed my only son,' she screams at Tanya. Clovis and the police break in, also letting in some cats who leap on Mary. She fights them off while the policeman tries to get Tanya out of there. Mary catches up with them, killing the policeman by impaling him on a picket fence. Tanya jumps into the patrol car and tries to get it started. Mary, in cat form, breaks the window and attempts to pull Tanya from the car. Cats start leaping on Mary... millions and billions and trillions of cats (anyone recognize the reference? Hint: It's a classic children's book). For some reason, the biting cats cause Mary to burst into flames. Engulfed in fire, Mary takes human form long enough to leap on the patrol car windshield and scream at Tanya one last time, 'You killed my son... my only son.' As Mary burns up in the driveway, Clovis jumps into the car with Tanya. As Tanya hugs Clovis, the other cats start leaving, there being nothing more there for them. [Original Synopsis by bj_kuehl]

In a small New England town, four elderly men form what they call the "Chowder Society," regaling themselves with the telling of scary "ghost stories." Membership in the club, in fact, requires that one present such a story. The four old friends consist of Ricky Hawthorne (Fred Astaire), a lawyer, and his partner Sears James (John Houseman), along with Dr. John Jaffrey (Melvyn Douglas) and Edward Charles Wanderley (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.), a successful businessman. When Edward's son, David, living in New York, falls from a window after the girl he's sleeping with turns suddenly into a hideous demon, Edward grieves. His other son, Don (Craig Wasson), a college professor who's fallen on hard times, shows up in town, not getting a great reception from Edward, who always preferred the other, more ambitious son. But now the four elderly gentlemen are unsettled, experiencing nightmares. Clearly, something is bothering them. Edward becomes so distraught, he wanders across a bridge in the snow. When he sees the same female apparition that caused his son to fall to his death, Edward, too, falls to his death from the bridge. Although his death is ruled a suicide, his son Don and Edward's three remaining elderly friends doubt it. Don approaches the remaining three friends, requesting membership in their group, offering up a bizarre "ghost" story of his own. Don's flashback: A few years earlier, then a promising junior professor in Miami, Florida, Don meets Alma (Alice Krige), a beautiful if mysterious secretary who comes to work at the university. They immediately become involved in a torrid sexual affair, which interferes with Don's job, causing him to miss work and earn the scorn of the Dean who previously championed him. But Don finds something strange about this strange, exotic woman -- a coldness, and he drops her. Later, he hears from his brother David that he has met the same girl in New York and intends to marry her. Don warns his brother that she's trouble, but to no avail. And indeed, Don suspects she caused his death - the fall from the building as seen earlier. Back in the present, the elderly friends react to Don's story. Sears dismisses it, but Ricky believes him. Elderly Dr. John Lafferty, after having a nightmare about the same woman - Alma - dies of a heart attack. This leaves only Sears and Ricky. Thus, they finally tell Don their own strange history with a woman who looked exactly like Alma. Their flashback: Back when the four friends were young in 1931, the beautiful Eva Galli (also Alice Krige) came to town, and, indeed, it's obvious that she's the same person as Alma in the present. The four friends are smitten with Eva, who encourages their sexual interest. It was Young Edward (Don's father) who first took her to bed, but he was impotent with her. When she mocked him later in front of his friends, Young Edward leaps to silence her, knocking her down, accidentally killing her when her head smashes into the stone fireplace. Horrified, the young men realize that she's dead. They consider calling police, but realize it would only mean wrecking their lives. Instead, they load her body into her car, then push it into the nearby lake. As the car descends, Eva stirs inside, looking out at them from the back window.... still alive! Back in the present, Ricky and Sears admit that the death has haunted them all these years. Whereas Sears is dubious, both Ricky and Don believe that Alma and Eva are one in the same and that her ghost has returned to seek revenge after 50 years. Don suggests they go to Eva's old house, now in ruins, to confront the past and her ghost once and for all. They go there, but Don falls on the rotting stairs and breaks his leg. Sears goes off in his car through the snow for help, leaving Don and Ricky behind, but one of Alma/Eva's evil accomplices, an evil boy, causes his car to crash off the icy road and he dies. Ricky nearly dies at the hands of one of Alma's the accomplices, an arrogant young Hod, but Ricky manages to get to the authorities, telling them to pull Eva's car up from the lake to reveal her body inside. This is intercut with Don, who confronts the rotting specter of Alma/Eva's ghost. Ricky and the authorities drag out the ancient car, opening the rusted, corroded door, finding the still-living rotting corpse inside. It falls out, disintegrating before their eyes. Don is spared from the monstrosity of her vengeful ghost, and the town is restored to peace.
