An army officer's wife is unsure if the man she is living with is her husband or his look-alike. Indian Army Officer, Kamal (Shashi Kapoor), and Archana (Babita) get married but shortly thereafter he is called to the front as war has broken out. Once there, he meets with Rakesh - his look-alike - who plans to kill Kamal and take his place, but Kamal resists and emerges as the winner. To escape prosecution/court martial, he runs from the front and returns home. Army personnel think Rakesh has become a deserter and also think that Kamal is missing in action and believed dead. Raj Singh is the nephew and heir apparent of multi-millionaire J.J. Singh. J.J. Singh has to travel worldwide for business purposes, and he asks Raj to join him in Tokyo. An employee, Pran, who has been asked to take care of Raj's travel needs, decides to sabotage this trip in order to embarrass Raj. When Raj lands at Tokyo, he misses his uncle, who has had a change in plans, and is now in Europe. Raj must re-book his flight to go to Europe. Raj finds that he has no money for an air-ticket, or to go anywhere. In this manner, Sunder and Kalpana get married, and soon Kalpana gives birth to a daughter (Baby Shakila). Tragically Kalpana passes away, and the Thakur, Sunder, and the child are devastated. The Thakur asks Sunder to get married to Savitri (Nutan), who is the daughter of his childhood friend, the local Collector (David). He hopes that in this manner the child will get the love of a mother. Sunder reluctantly agrees, and soon Savitri and he get married. Savitri is unable to win the love of the child nor does she get any affection from Sunder, as he is unable to get Kalpana out of his mind and thoughts. In the meantime, Roopa's dad (Jeevan) is plotting the death of Sunder, so that his daughter can take over the wealth of the Thakur after his death. Twenty years ago, after killing his brother, Sardar Rajpal flees from his hometown in Shillong and re-locates in the rural area of Assam along with his adopted daughter, Meena. He asks his wife, Kamla, to send their son, Shankar, so that he can employ him and get him married to Meena. Shankar arrives and he is welcomed by Sardar who employs him and introduces him to Meena. A few days another young man shows up at his door claiming that he is Kamla's son. A baffled Sardar also welcomes him, and puts both the young men under observation in order to find who the real Shankar is.
