Elizabeth works for the father of her fiancé's real estate business. In order to keep Elizabeth employed, her soon-to-be father-in-law sends her back to her hometown to persuade an ex-boyfriend to sell his ski resort to the company. Elizabeth travels to her old hometown to buy the city's ski resort on behalf of her future father-in-law. However, the owner of the resort, Randy, is unwilling to sell and also turns out to be an old schoolmate. Without a quick deal, Elizabeth is forced to stay and consequently meet her sister and their parents. Her sister is completely focused on winning The Christmas Classic for the tenth year in a row, but Elizabeth becomes determined to finally beat her sister and soon she has won Randy over to her side.

With their five-year-old son Jacob as best man, Elizabeth Welles and Mark Bennett finally get married after eight years together. Seven years after Jacob's death in a tragic car accident and six years since their divorce, Mark continues his life alone while remarried author Elizabeth promotes her latest book. Mark receives word that his and Elizabeth's former home, which became a rental property, was seemingly trashed by its latest tenants. Mark stops by the house to clean up and meets next-door neighbor Amy and her young son Dash. Mark hears footsteps in the empty house. Janice Trejada comes to the door looking for previous tenants Peggy and Steve. Janice explains to Mark that she is a psychic medium who was doing consulting for Peggy. Mark calls Elizabeth to tell her he wants to sell the house. Doors suddenly slam on their own. Additional paranormal activity and an apparent vision of his dead son lead Mark to believe Jacob may haunt the home. After angrily confronting Amy about Dash possibly being the boy in his house, Mark comes face to face with a vivid vision of Jacob playing with his toys. Mark tries touching Jacob, but is painfully shocked. Jacob asks where Elizabeth is. Mark goes to see Elizabeth, who now raises stepdaughters Emma and Isabelle with her new husband Smith. With some animosity still between them, Mark is unable to convince Elizabeth to revisit their former home. Elizabeth later shows up at the house unexpectedly. Elizabeth sees Jacob too, but violently strikes Mark and storms away under the impression that Mark may be playing a drunken prank. Dash finds Mark passed out. Dash tells Mark about his broken family. Mark tells Dash that his son Jacob died in a car accident for which Mark feels responsible. Mark meets with Janice to ask about the ghost. Janice says it is up to Mark to discover what Jacob wants in order for Mark to send the boy back to the other side. When Jacob asks after his mother again, Mark returns to Elizabeth. Mark convinces Elizabeth to come back to the house. Elizabeth realizes the vision of Jacob is real, although she too is unable to touch him. Elizabeth and Mark begin a routine where she spends days in the house with Jacob while Mark stays there nights and weekends. Mark's boss Daniels discusses Mark's distraction at work and extended absences. Mark quits his job to spend more time with Jacob, which concerns Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Mark get into an argument about Jacob's death. Elizabeth blames Mark for swerving to avoid a dog while Mark blames Elizabeth for not buckling Jacob's seatbelt. Light bulbs suddenly shatter to interrupt their shouting. Jacob tells his parents that he wants them to be like they were before he died. Jacob makes Mark and Elizabeth hold hands and read him a story. Mark and Elizabeth reconcile. The two of them continue alternating spending time with Jacob in the house. Elizabeth becomes startled by supernatural activity caused by an unseen entity. Mark finds Elizabeth with a bloody nose. Jacob asks Mark why Elizabeth doesn't sleep in the house. At her home, Elizabeth shows the photo album from her first wedding to one of her stepdaughters. Mark and Elizabeth have another introspective conversation about Elizabeth's book and coping with Jacob's death. Jacob has his parents hold a funeral for a bird that flies against a window. Amy asks Mark and Elizabeth to watch Dash. Jacob expresses envy when he sees Mark playing with Dash outside. Elizabeth screams when she sees Jacob interacting with an unseen female presence. Mark finds Elizabeth passed out. Mark and Elizabeth continue growing closer as they dance together that evening. Amy interrupts a romantic moment to retrieve Dash. Mark asks Jacob about the other entity. Janice comes to the house and explains that Mark has to send Jacob back in order to close the otherworldly door. Elizabeth expresses anger over the suggestion of sending Jacob away. Mark and Elizabeth realize Jacob can go outside. The three of them then enjoy a day at the beach together. Elizabeth falls asleep at the house while reading Jacob a story. Mark and Elizabeth rekindle their love for each other, kiss, and have sex. Smith shows up the next day to confront his wife about being with her ex. Elizabeth goes after Smith when he drives off. Jacob tells Mark that he took off his seatbelt before the car accident. Mark realizes Jacob came back so his parents could forgive each other for the accident not being their fault. Elizabeth returns to the house and sleeps with Mark again. Mark visits his elderly father Lenn, who suffers from dementia. Elizabeth sees a vision of Jacob with her dead mother, whom Mark cannot see. Mark rushes Elizabeth to the hospital when she gets another bloody nose and faints. Amy, who is a nurse at the hospital, takes Mark to see Elizabeth after she recovers. Elizabeth tells Mark her condition was caused by quitting her anti-depressants cold turkey. Mark comes home to find Jacob playing with his new toy train set. Jacob tells Mark he went on a trip and Elizabeth is coming with him next time. Realizing she may be dying, Mark confronts Elizabeth for the truth about her diagnosis. Elizabeth confesses that she has terminal leukemia. Mark tells Elizabeth what Jacob said about his seatbelt. Mark, Elizabeth, and Jacob go to the beach as a family again. Mark repeats his wedding vows to Elizabeth during another intimate moment. Elizabeth goes into the hospital. Mark comes home to find the train running, but no sign of Jacob. Elizabeth and Jacob are seen embracing in a white light in her hospital bed. Mark is seen at the beach near Smith and his two daughters following Elizabeth's funeral. Dash greets Mark when he returns home. Following a cordial conversation, Mark invites Dash inside the house to play with Jacob's train.

A date with the sweet and innocent Rosalee is just the ticket that Tad needs, when he falls in love with her. Tad moves to the small town so he can be near Rosalee, and this drives Tad's agents crazy. Rosalee's best friend, Pete (Topher Grace) finally tells Rosalee that he has loved her his whole life. In the year 1998, Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher), who suffered severe sexual abuse (sexual abuse by the father of his girl friend Kayleigh from school) and traumas (death of his mentally ill father, in front of his eyes) as a boy (played by Logan Lerman) and a teenager (played by John Patrick Amedori), blacks out frequently, often at moments of high stress. His mother has him examined by a doctor, but all the tests fail to spot the issue. The doctor suggests that Evan keep a journal to help him with the blackouts. Evan has the habit of backing out just before the most unpleasant events in his life, including the time when his girlfriend Kayleigh, her brother Tommy & their friend Matt stole an explosive from Kayleigh's father stash & tried to explode as a prank in a neighbors mailbox, which somehow led to a serious injury to Matt. Evan's mom tries hypnosis, but Evan simply gets nosebleeds when forced to remember the blackout portions of his life. Later Tommy finds Kayleigh kissing Evan & takes it out on Evan by burning Evan's dog alive. Evan is blocked out on that event as well (right after the point when he tries to intervene to try & save his dog). Tommy beats up Evan badly & prompts Evan's mom to change towns. While entertaining a girl in his dorm room, he finds that when he reads from his adolescent journals, he travels back in time, and he is able to "redo" parts of his past, thereby causing the blackouts he experienced as a child. He also remembers that during the mailbox incident, the resident of the house (a mom with her baby) approached the mailbox while the explosive was still on trigger, & she opened the mailbox just as it exploded, killing them both. Matt tried to save them & was seriously injured. There are consequences to his choices, however, that then propagate back to his present life: his alternate futures vary from college student, to prisoner, to amputee. His efforts are driven by the desire to undo the most unpleasant events of his childhood which coincide with his mysterious blackouts, including saving his childhood sweetheart Kayleigh (Amy Smart) from being molested by her father (Eric Stoltz) and tormented by her sadistic brother Tommy (William Lee Scott). His first attempt to alter reality is when he goes back to the time when Kayleigh's father sexually abused him & her by making a soft porn movie of them. He "abuses" Kayleigh's father & gets him to realize the error of his ways. He wakes up in an alternate reality, where he is married to Kayleigh & instantly gets a huge headache where all the "new" memories of his alternate past come back to him. In this reality, Kayleigh was spared by her dad, but the dad took all of his sexual frustrations out on Tommy. Now Tommy is out of Juvi & is hunting to scare Evan away from Kayleigh. When Tommy attacks, Evan retaliates & ends up killing Tommy & goes to jail. In jail he is attacked by Tommy's Juvi buddies, & this time Evan uses the journal to travel back to the time when Tommy burnt Evan's dog alive. He convinces Matt to pick a piece of metal to cut open the ropes of the sack in which his dog is trapped. Evan talks Tommy into sparing his dog by saying that he would go to Juvi & he wouldn't want to leave Kayleigh alone with his dad. Tommy relents & releases the dog, when Matt kills Tommy with the metal shard. Kayleigh gets a gash on her face from the same metal, when she tries to save Tommy. Evan wakes in an alternate reality in his dorm room again. In this reality, Tommy is dead & Matt is institutionalized. Evan meets Matt in the hospital & Matt blames Evan for putting the metal shard in his hands, saying that EVan knew fully well that Matt would kill Tommy. Kayleigh is ugly due to a huge gash on her face & turns out to be a prostitute. Now Evan goes back to the time of the dynamite exploding & tries to warn off the woman and the baby approaching their mailbox. He gets close to the mailbox & ends up saving their life, but when he wakes up he has lost his arms & Kayleigh is having sex with Matt. Evan is distraught that in this reality he has even lost Kayleigh. He asks Kayleigh how she feels about him & she tells Evan that she hated her dad, but didn't opt to go with her mom (after their divorce) because she wanted to be with Evan. Thats when Evan realized that the only way to "fix" everything was to push Kayleih away in the first place. The actions he takes, and those he enables others to take during his blackouts, change the time-line in the new future where he awakes. As he continues to do this he realizes that even though his intentions are good his actions have unforeseen consequences. Moreover, the assimilation of dozens of years' worth of new memories from the alternate time-lines causes him brain damage and severe nosebleeds. Ultimately, he decides that his attempts to alter the past end up only harming those he cares about. But Evan realizes that the main cause of everyone's suffering in all the different time-lines is himself. At the conclusion of the film, Evan purposely travels back in time one final time to the first day he met Kayleigh. By scaring her away, he makes sure that she is never a part of his life, and thus finally succeeds in saving her life. He then destroys all of his journals and memories so that he is not ever tempted again to make any more changes. The film ends eight years in the future with Evan leaving an office building in Manhattan and passing Kayleigh on a crowded sidewalk. They alternately pause and turn after spotting and passing each other. After a moment of hesitation, Evan lets her walk away without speaking to her.

Donald Sinclair (John Cleese), the eccentric owner of The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, devises a new game to entertain the high rollers who visit his hotel. Six special tokens are placed in the casino's slot machines, and the winners of them are gathered together and told that $2 million in cash is hidden in a bag in a train station locker in Silver City, New Mexico. They are told they must compete in a no-holds-barred race to get there first and claim the money. Each winner is given a key that will open the locker and they are sent on their way. What they do not know is that Sinclair's wealthy patrons are placing bets on who will win the race. Among the racers are scheming twins Duane (Seth Green) looking to make money off insurance scams and Blaine Cody (Vince Vieluf) who is unintelligible due to an infected tongue piercing, businesswoman Merrill Jennings (Lanai Chapman) with anger issues and her estranged mother Vera (Whoopi Goldberg) a superstitious mother, who gave Merrill up for adoption and is now reuniting with her, disgraced football referee Owen Templeton (Cuba Gooding Jr) recently infamous for a bad call on account of bad judgment, the Pear family led by opportunistic father Randy (Jon Lovitz) a sneaky, irresponsible and recklessly opportunist tourist, his wife Beverly "Bev" Pear (Kathy Najimy), elder son Jason (Brody Smith) and daughter Kimberly (Jillian Marie Hubert), eccentric Italian tourist Enrico Pollini (Rowan Atkinson) a simple-minded, narcoleptic Italian tourist from Naples, and no-nonsense attorney Nicholas "Nick" Schaffer (Breckin Meyer). Having initially agreed not to play, greed takes over and they start to race. Duane and Blaine destroy an airport radar with their pickup truck grounding everybody else but wrecking their own vehicle in the process, so they rent another. They decide to split up to double their chances of winning by creating a replica key. However, a locksmith Lloyd (Silas Weir Mitchell) overhears their plan and makes off with the key. The brothers chase the locksmith who tries to escape in a hot air balloon, only for the brothers to steal back the key and leave the locksmith dangling from the balloon with a cow for company. Later, after Blaine is distracted by two attractive women driving beside them on the road, they veer off of it and their rental car is crushed by a monster truck, which they steal to get to Silver City. Merrill and Vera are given malicious directions by a woman selling squirrels as pets on the side of the road, and crash into a pile of other totaled vehicles containing her previous deceased victims. This forces them to steal a rocket car which races across the desert until it runs out of fuel. Left disoriented due to the car's extreme speed, they then accidentally stumble onto a busload of mental patients headed for Silver City. Owen is kicked out of a taxi for a bad call he made at a football game that caused the driver to lose a bet. Now without most of his clothes or other belongings. He comes across a coach filled with women going to an I Love Lucy convention and disguises himself as the driver. After the cos-players flood the bus with suds, he later hits the cow dangling from the balloon and crashes the bus. After the cos-players lose the only spare wheel, Owen reveals that he is not the real driver and the enraged women chase him down the road. He escapes them and steals a horse to ride to Silver City. Randy and his family, at the insistence of their daughter Kimberly after he forces her to defecate out of the window of their mini-van to avoid stopping, visit a museum dedicated to a famous Nazi, Klaus Barbie, mistakenly believing it to be about Barbie the doll. After the family awkwardly leave the museum, they steal Adolf Hitler's staff car after Duane and Blaine sabotage their mini-van. While driving the staff car, the family is attacked by an all-female biker gang and Randy, who burns his tongue after the dashboard cigarette lighter accidentally ejects directly into his mouth, drives them into a large gathering honoring World War II veterans, unaware of how his slurred speech and disheveled appearance insults them. Later at a diner when his family insist, they end the trip, Randy drugs them by slipping sleeping pills into their milkshakes and bundles them into a semi-truck heading for Silver City. Nick at first refuses to participate until he meets helicopter pilot Tracy Faucet (Amy Smart) who offers him a lift to Silver City. She decides to visit her boyfriend on the way, who she finds cheating on her with another woman in his backyard, so she attacks him by using the helicopter to chase him into the desert. Now having damaged her helicopter and with police on the way to arrest them, she and Nick steal her ex-boyfriend's truck together and form a romantic relationship while driving to Silver City. Enrico, who is narcoleptic (an extreme tendency to fall asleep), falls asleep at the start of the race but awakens hours later and receives a lift from ambulance driver Zack Mallozzi (Wayne Knight), who offers Enrico a lift in order to avoid a lawsuit from Gloria Allred, who witnessed Zack hit him with his van. Zack is delivering a heart to El Paso. The heart gets lose in the van, and Enrico accidentally throws it out the window. Zack considers removing Enrico's heart to replace the first, but Enrico flees onto a passing train, only for Zack to restart the first heart by touching an electric fence. Enrico drops his locker key in a baby's diaper and, while retrieving it, is mistaken for a pedophile by the parents. He is thrown out at Silver City Station. Enrico arrives at the train station first only to fall asleep as he reaches the locker. The racers reunite in Silver City and fight to open the locker, only to find it empty. Outside, Sinclair's assistant Grisham (Dave Thomas) and call girl, Vicki (Brandy Ledford), are making off with the money. The locksmith, still attached to the runaway balloon, suddenly appears and maneuvers it to drop the cow on Grisham and Vicki. He then ties the money bag to the balloon, but it accidentally slips out of his grip and into the sky. The racers chase the balloon to a charity concert where Smash Mouth are performing, and the band and crowd mistake the money for a donation. Once the racers see what a global difference the money could make, they have a change of heart and decide to donate it all. Sinclair and his patrons arrive at the scene and Nick horrifies them by announcing they will match the money raised. Sinclair is distraught as the donations total shoots past $19 million, and the racers celebrate by dancing and crowd-surfing to "All Star".

Timothy "Dildo/Dunph" Dunphy (Shawn Hatosy), is in the Class of 1974 in his high school senior year living in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, comes from a troubled single parent working-class family, and is friends with those that have aspirations which do not exceed smoking marijuana at the water tower that has a view of the town. His father, Pat (Alec Baldwin), suffers from his wife committing suicide and appears naïve when the boys come back to the Dunphy's house to get a bong. A regularly held poker game is in progress. Pat insists that the boys be respectful and come in to say hello. The boys' intention is undetected by Pat that they are using drugs when Dunph's wheelchair-using younger brother, Jackie (Tommy Bone), attempts to hand off the bong wrapped in Dunph's coat. It falls to the floor. Jackie suggests that it is a musical horn which Pat's friend, Joey (George Wendt), asks Dunph to demonstrate, only able to make sounds about which Pat is dismissive. Pat's friends chuckle at Pat's reaction. Off the boys go on their adventures. The guys head home with Dunph at the wheel but he is unable to see the road with the cloud of marijuana smoke filling the cab. He rear-ends a police vehicle. Pat's poker game player, Caveech, uses his influence with a local judge to replace a reform school sentence with the stipulation of parole graduating high school at Cornwall Academy, a Connecticut boys' boarding school with a sister school nearby under the same name. Failure to graduate vacates the terms of parole and he will serve a one year jail sentence. He meets the rigid dorm master, Mr. Funderburk (Timothy Crowe), who emphases learning the school rules book. Dunph learns that new friend Wheeler and other new schoolmates, a class of people that seem to have more opportunities than himself, are involved in their own mischief just like the boys back home. Billy Fu is one particular example. He is a middle eastern exchange student with "the best reefer on campus". He routinely misses classes without repercussion because his father pledges a large donation to the school on the condition that Billy graduate. Dunph is no longer just any student at the school when "Drugs" Delaney (Jon Abrahams), writes Dunph with his particular colorful words and addressing the letter in the most simplest of ways that the school has to open it to learn of the contents; Dunph has low regard for both the school and Mr. Funderburk. Dunph routinely gets sanctioned with work hours as punishment for his school rules transgressions. He also develops a friendship with a sister school student, Jane Weston (Amy Smart), regarded as "hands down, the coolest girl in school". A romance develops and through her advice he learns about personal fulfillment which could be achieved by an education. She and others are found out by Mr. Funderburk smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol in a dorm room of the boys' dorm. The incident is resolved, unknown to Dunph's knowledge until too late, with Jane expelled for school rules violations. Dunph feels responsible for dashing Jane's goal of attending Brown University following graduation. He concludes: Wheeler's acceptance at Yale University is weighed heavily by a letter of recommendation from Funderburk and Wheeler was caught with marijuana during an earlier raid; therefore Wheeler made his own deal with Funderburk to inform on others which resulted in Jane being expelled. Dunph resolves to see Jane's college plans revitalized by speaking with the Dean at Brown University, as he explains that she was the innocent party in the incident. Dunph comes to terms with his father's apprehension discussing the death in the family because the latter felt responsible for imposing on her a life that she could not handle; she being too young when they married, depressed and agoraphobic. Dunph refuse to shake Funderburk's hand at the graduation ceremony in the auditorium and exits after asking his classmates for his "luggage". He then meets up with his father and Jackie as they arrive. Pat hands over an acceptance letter from the Community College of Rhode Island where Dunph points out that everyone is accepted although he could then transfer to a "senior college...where people sleep over and shit." Pat congratulates Dunph for being the first of the family to go to college and the younger brother not to be trumped surmises the possibility that it just very well may be that Jackie himself may be the first to graduate. Alternate ending An alternate ending is found on the DVD, which has Dunph leaving the graduation ceremonies, meeting Jackie and Clopsy, their three-legged dog. Also showing up is Jane, whom Dunph shares a passionate kiss with, which annoys Funderburk, who wastes no time in rebuking both Dunph and Jane. Dunph responds by punching Funderburk, knocking him to the sidewalk.

Jonathan "Mox" Moxon (James Van Der Beek) is an academically gifted backup quarterback for the West Canaan High School football team. Despite his relative popularity at school, easy friendships with other players, and smart and sassy girlfriend, Jules Harbor (Amy Smart), Mox is dissatisfied with his life. He wants to leave Texas to go to school at Brown University. He also dislikes his football-obsessed father (Thomas F. Duffy) and dreads playing football under legendary coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight). Kilmer is a verbally abusive control freak whose philosophy can be summed up as "win at all costs". He has a strong track record as coach, remarking in a speech that "in my thirty years of coaching football at West Caanan, I have brought two state titles, and 22 district championships!" Kilmer's philosophy finally takes its toll on Coyotes' quarterback, Lance Harbor (Paul Walker). It is revealed that Lance, who is Mox's best friend, had been manipulated into taking cortisone shots into an injured knee that finally gave out on a huge sack. Lance is rushed to the hospital, where doctors are appalled at the massive amount of scar tissue found under his knee. Mox, who has accompanied Lance to the hospital, is shocked when Kilmer tells the doctor that he knew nothing at all about Lance's knee problems, when in fact Kilmer ordered the trainer to inject the shots. In need of a new quarterback, Kilmer reluctantly names Mox to replace Lance as captain and starting quarterback. The move brings unexpected dividends for Mox, one of them being Darcy Sears (Ali Larter), Lance's beautiful blonde cheerleader girlfriend, who is interested in marrying a football player in order to escape small-town life. Darcy even goes so far as to attempt to seduce Moxon, sporting a bikini made of whipped cream over her otherwise naked body, but he rebuffs her as gently as he can. Becoming fed up with Kilmer and not feeling a strong need to win, Mox starts calling his own plays on the field without Kilmer's approval. He also finally tells his football obsessed father off at one point screaming at him "I don't want your life!" Mox's father had been a football player at West Caanan, and although Kilmer dismissed him as a "no talent pussy" he did say that he at least listened (unlike Mox). Kilmer, who becomes aware that Mox has won a full scholarship to Brown, warns Mox that if he doesn't fall in line, he will alter his transcripts in order to reverse the decision on his scholarship. Another friend of Mox's, Wendell Brown, is injured on the field shortly thereafter. Kilmer manipulates Wendell into taking a shot of cortisone to deaden the pain from his injury, allowing him to continue even in the face of a permanent injury. Wendell, who is desperate to be recruited by a good college, grants his consent. At this moment, Mox tells Kilmer he'll quit the team if the needle enters Wendell's knee. Undaunted, Kilmer orders Charlie Tweeder (Scott Caan), a friend of both Mox and Wendell, to take the snaps. Tweeder refuses. Mox tells Kilmer that the only way they'll return to the field is without him. Realizing that he will be forced to forfeit the game, Kilmer loses control and attacks Mox. The other players break up the fight and then refuse to take to the field. Knowing his loss of control has cost him his credibility, Kilmer tries in vain to rally support and spark the team's spirit into trusting him, but not one player follows him out of the locker room. Kilmer continues down the locker room hall, and seeing no one following him, turns the other direction and into his office. The team goes on to win the game without his guidance. In a voice-over epilogue, Mox states that he "never played football again.
