The Immediate Unknown is a story about Chloe, an eighteen-year-old girl who enters her freshman year at Fitz College, a small liberal arts school in the Midwest. After a few weeks of settling into college life, Chloe makes new friends, experiences her first house party, and meets Dan, a sweet skater boy. As Chloe's relationship with Dan deepens, Chloe's friendships with her extroverted roommate Liz and cool girl Nicole solidify. One day, Chloe finds out her father has unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack. When Chloe returns to school, she attempts to carry on with the new life she's made at college only to find herself deeply afraid of the impending unknowns in her future. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is the 16-year-old home-schooled daughter of zoologist parents (Ana Gasteyer and Neil Flynn). They have returned to the US after residing in Africa for many years. Cady is unprepared for her first day of public high school. With the help of Janis (Lizzy Caplan) and Damien (Daniel Franzese), Cady learns about the various cliques. She is warned to avoid the school's most exclusive clique, the Plastics, the reigning trio of girls led by the queen bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams). However, the Plastics take a shine to Cady and invite her to sit with them at lunch and go shopping with them after school. Later that day, Cady becomes infatuated with her classmate Aaron; Gretchen warns her that as Regina's ex, he is off-limits. Upon realizing that Cady has been accepted into the Plastics, Janis hatches a plan to get revenge on Regina, using Cady to infiltrate the Plastics. Having ingratiated herself with the Plastics per Janis' plan, Cady learns about the "Burn Book", a top-secret notebook of Regina's filled with vicious rumors, secrets, and gossip about all the other girls (and teachers) in their class. Cady soon falls in love with Regina's ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), whom Regina successfully steals back from Cady in a fit of jealousy. At a Halloween house party, instead of talking to Aaron on Cady's behalf, Regina kisses him in front of her and resumes their relationship. Hurt and frustrated, Cady continues with Janis' plan which involves cutting off Regina's "resources", which include separating her from her boyfriend Aaron, destroying her beauty, and turning Regina's fellow Plastics, insecure rich girl Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert) and sweet but ditsy Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), against her. At first, the trio's plans backfire, and worse, even increases Regina's popularity. Cady then starts pretending failure at math to get Aaron's attention and soon choreographs Aaron's breakup with Regina by confessing Regina's infidelity with another boy. Cady also convinces Regina to eat high-calorie nutrition bars (called Kalteen) by claiming that they actually help one lose weight. She also turns Gretchen against Regina by making her think Regina thinks of Cady as a better friend instead of her. After violating the Plastics' dress code rules by wearing sweatpants, the only thing that fit her, Regina is banished, and Cady becomes the new "queen bee". In her efforts to get revenge on Regina, Cady gradually loses her individual personality and remakes herself in the image of Regina. Her act soon becomes reality, and she becomes as spiteful as Regina, abandoning Janis and Damien in the process and focusing more on her image. With her parents out of town, Cady throws a house party. Drunk, she admits to Aaron that she doesn't really need math tutoring, and he renounces her as being no better than Regina. Janis confronts Cady for throwing a party instead of attending her art show and declares that she has become as plastic as she pretended to be. Meanwhile, Regina discovers Cady's sabotage and pastes her own photo in the Burn Book to frame Cady, Karen, and Gretchen. Regina strikes back, spreading the entire contents of her Burn Book around the school, inciting a riot. To avoid suspicion, Regina also inserts a fake slander of herself in the book in order to focus blame on Cady, Gretchen, and Karen. The riot is eventually quelled by Principal Duvall (Tim Meadows). Principal Duvall and math teacher Ms. Norbury gather the female junior students in the gym to talk through their social issues. Math teacher Ms. Norbury (Tina Fey), who also appeared in the Burn Book in which Cady slandered her by saying that she sold drugs, makes the girls realize that all of them are guilty of hurting their peers. She has each girl confess and apologize to the rest of the girls. When Janis' turn came, Regina made an insulting joke about her sexuality, to which the crowd laughs at. Janis retaliates by confessing her plan to destroy Regina with Cady's help and openly mocks Regina with the support of the entire school. Regina storms out, pursued by an apologetic Cady, and gets hit by a school bus in her haste. Rumors circulate that Cady intentionally pushed Regina in front of the bus. Now without friends, shunned by Aaron, and distrusted by everyone at school (even being distrusted by her own mother), Cady decides to make amends by taking full blame for the Burn Book. Though severely punished by her confession, her guilt dissolves and she returns to her old personality. As part of her punishment and her reformation, she joins the Mathletes, which Damien and Regina both described earlier as "social suicide," in their competition. There, Cady has an epiphany while competing against a very unattractive girl, realizing that even if she made fun of the girl's appearance it would not stop the girl from beating her. At the Spring Fling dance, Cady is elected Spring Fling Queen, but in her acceptance speech, she declares her victory is meaningless: they are all wonderful in their own way and thus the victory belongs to everyone. As a symbolic gesture, she breaks her tiara and distributes the pieces to her classmates. Cady makes up with Janis and Damien, reconciles with Aaron, and reaches a truce with the Plastics. The Plastics disband by the start of the new school year: Regina joins the lacrosse team as a way to channel her anger positively, Karen becomes the school weather girl (claiming that her breasts can always tell when it is raining), Gretchen joins the "Cool Asians" clique and is their biggest follower, and Cady dates Aaron as well as hanging out with Janis, who starts a relationship with Cady's fellow Mathlete Kevin, and Damien. Now reasonably well-liked, Cady reflects that the "Girl World" she lives in is at peace.

Betsy Jobs (Kirsten Dunst) and Arlene Lorenzo (Michelle Williams) are two sweet but somewhat ditsy teenage girls living in Washington D.C. in the early 1970s. Betsy comes from a wealthy family in the Georgetown area, while Arlene lives with her widowed mother Helen (Teri Garr) in an apartment in the Watergate building. Betsy stays with her father David (Karl Pruner) and brother Larry (Devon Gummersall). The house is upset as Larry has recently been drafted. One night, on a quest to mail a letter to enter a contest to win a date with teen idol singer Bobby Sherman, the two girls sneak out of Arlene's home, at the same time as the Watergate break-in. They manage to enter and leave through the parking garage door, accidentally causing the break-in to be discovered. They are seen by G. Gordon Liddy (Harry Shearer), who they believe to be committing a jewel robbery; they panic and run away. The security guard, who had heard the parking garage door being shut, goes to investigate and is startled by the taped door. The guard calls the police, who immediately arrest the burglars. The burglary revolved around members of a group associated with Nixon's 1972 re-election campaign breaking into and planting listening devices (and also taking photographs of confidential documents) in the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Office Building in Washington, D.C., on June 17, 1972. The next day, while at the White House on a school tour, they accidentally happen across Liddy again. They don't recognize him, but he recognizes them and instantly becomes suspicious. The girls had noticed a piece of paper stuck to the underside of Liddy's shoe, which they assumed to be toilet paper. But when Liddy left, they picked the paper which had some named and an amount of money written next to each name. They keep the paper as a souvenir. Liddy points them out to H. R. Haldeman (Dave Foley), who proceeds to interrogate them; their conversation (in which it is revealed that the girls don't actually think about the President that much) is interrupted by a phone call from Haldeman's wife. During the call the door of their room opens up and they can see directly into the Oval office with Nixon playing with his dog named Checkers. Arlene attracts the attention of the dog with a whistle, which brings Nixon into their room as well. President Nixon / Dick (Dan Hedaya), who takes Haldeman aside to complain about the bugging operation being so fouled up. The girls are naturally awestruck at being in the same room as Nixon - but more awestruck at being able to play with his dog, which gives Nixon an idea. In order to keep their silence, he appoints them his official dog-walkers. Which means they must be admitted repeatedly to the White House. Rose Mary Woods (Ana Gasteyer) is Nixon's assistant. On these visits they accidentally influence major events such as the Vietnam peace process (Arlene advocates that bombing hurts people, and Nixon takes that as the voice of the people and instructs Kissinger accordingly. Arlene says that the people would like Nixon more if he stopped the war) and the Nixon-Brezhnev accord, by bringing along cookies that they have inadvertently baked marijuana into. When Betsy's brother, Larry (Devon Gummersall), reveals the cookies' "secret ingredient" and realizes the President ate them, he concludes that this was likely a leading cause of Nixon's paranoia. They also become familiar with the key figures of Nixon's administration, including the long-suffering, frequently ignored Henry Kissinger (Saul Rubinek), and inadvertently learn the major secrets of the Watergate scandal without realizing what they know. They were finding their way through the White House and mistakenly stumble onto a room where a man was counting money with a machine and putting it into a briefcase, while others were busy shredding documents. Nixon explains that Paper Mache is a hobby of his. Arlene, previously infatuated with Bobby Sherman, now falls equally hard for the president. She adorns her bedroom walls with posters of Nixon and changes her look including wearing contacts instead of glasses. Just after reading an 18½-minute message of love into his tape recorder, she plays back another part of the tape and, after hearing his coarse, brutal rantings, quickly realizes his true nature. When they confront Nixon ("You kicked Checkers, you're prejudiced, and you have a potty mouth!"), he fires and threatens them ("You don't mess with the big boys!"). The girls now reevaluate what they have learned and decide to reveal everything to the "radical muckraking bastards" (Nixon's words) at the Washington Post, Bob Woodward (Will Ferrell) and Carl Bernstein (Bruce McCulloch). So, they become informants; two 15-year-old girls are the true identity of the famous Deep Throat (Betsy's brother had just been caught watching the film of the same name). Woodward and Bernstein - portrayed as petty, childish, and incompetent - are naturally skeptical of the two girls. To make matters worse, their only piece of physical evidence, a list of names of those involved from the Committee to Re-Elect the President, is eaten by Betsy's dog. Nixon's men realize that the girls are a real threat and attempt tactics such as bugging and undercover agents to find out what they know, eventually going so far as to break into Betsy's house and plant an undercover agent as Arlene's mother's boyfriend. Eventually pushed to the limit after being chased by the Watergate "plumbers", the girls decide to take action: sneaking into Haldeman's house, they manage to find and steal a crucial tape recording. They give a transcript of it to Woodward and Bernstein (keeping the tape as a "souvenir") thus ending Nixon's political career. Nixon finds Arlene's message on his tape and erases it, reasoning that he would be "crucified" if it was perceived that he had an affair with a 15-year-old girl. After the resignation, as Nixon's helicopter flies over Betsy's house, the two girl hold up a sign depicting the phrase "You suck, Dick", further angering the now ex-president.
