When Gayetri announces that she wishes to marry Suraj Singh (Raj Kiran), Ugranarayan arranges his death, so that the family cannot have a heir to the estate. Ugranarayan with the help of corrupt police inspector Tribhuvan (Gulshan Grover), frames Gayetri for the murder of Suraj Singh and soon has her sentened to death. Gayetri, while in prison, is pregnant. Sharda Verma (Moushumi Chatterjee), a lawyer comes to the legal rescue of Gayetri, and pleads successfully against the death sentence. Ugranarayan is enraged at this, and hires a butcher, Ghulam Rasul (Om Puri) to kill the child, which he says he did. When confronted with the news of her son's death, Gayetri loses control and with the help of a corrupt doctor, Ugranarayan has Gayetri committed to a mental hospital, where the doctor, Dr. Neelkanth (Alok Nath) inflicts shock treatment and other tortures on the brain of Gayetri, thus rendering her a virtual vegetable. Several years pass by, and then one day Gayetri escapes from her tormentors. Then begin the sudden deaths of Ugranarayan, his family, and his goons. A saga of love as a man turns rebellious and goes against his family and society to protect his love, a prostitute from evil. Saajan is a college youth, enjoying his life, meets with Kajal the girl of his dreams at a brothel. Kajal is an innocent victim of Dhanraj, who runs this brothel. Saajan eventually falls in love with Kajal, but this love affair is not acceptable to the society, which includes his parents Mr. and Mrs. Sood. Saajan's dad Col. Sood wants his son to join the Indian army. On the other side, this relationship of love is also not acceptable to Dhanraj, since he doesn't want any of his brothel girls to go into normal respectable society. Trapped between both, Saajan, along with his friends, rescues his love from the brothel. Saajan takes Kaajal's hand and they leave the house. A few days later, Police Inspector D'Souza knocks on Sood's door, informing him that a complaint has been made against his son for abducting a young prostitute, commonly known as Paro alias Kaajal, and of beating several men who tried to stop him. An emperor leaves his fortune to his grandson instead of his nephew. The nephew pursues them, capturing the emperor's manager but losing the prince. 20 years later, he still holds the manager, seeking lockets with a treasure map. The emperor thwarts his intention of parting with his belongings to his lecherous nephew, Thakur Veer Pratap Singh and instead pledge everything to his grandson, Prince Anil. Before the Thakur can take any action on Crown Prince Anil; the emperor asks his trusted manager, Diwan Sardarilal to escape with Anil. But the Thakur catches up with the Diwan and abducts him thus he is separated from his wife and children with the crown prince losing his way in the process. The emperor entrusts the life of his son with his trusted Diwan Sardarilal, and the Diwan and his family consisting of his wife, a son and a daughter escape. Unfortunately, the Diwan is caught by the Thakur and imprisoned. His wife escapes with her children, but the crown prince is separated. It is only the Diwan who knows who the real crown prince is, as he had placed a locket around his neck. Three friends who don't take their life seriously are suspended from college so they decide to take revenge on the principal. On reaching his house they find that someone has already killed him.

A singer by profession, Suraj (Rajesh Khanna) gets stranded in resthouse in the coutnryside during a rainstorm. While there he experiences ununsual feelings, as if he has been there before. He feels himself transported to another time and era, to another birth, and drawn to a woman named Ratna (Hema Malini). He is unable to leave this experience behind him, and decides to find out what this means. He discovers that in his past life he was a Chief Singer in the emperor's court, his name was Prakash and he had fallen in love with a courtesan named Ratna, much to the chargin and anger of his family and the emperor's and his officials. They are tragically separated. He subsequently comes across a portrait of Ratna, and shortly after he meets a gypsy, Jhumri (also Hema Malini) who looks exactly like Ratna. Soon Jhumri is also able to recollect her past life, and her love for Prakash. This does not auger well with Rita Malhotra (Asha Sachdev) who loves Suraj, and Appa (Prem Chopra), the son of the leader of the gypsies (Madan Puri), who will not stop at anything to make Jhumri his wife. Appa steals the portrait, and instigates the gypsies against Suraj, so that he can marry Jhumri, and perhaps separate the two lovers again in this birth also.

Sheela lives a wealthy lifestyle along with her widower dad, Ghanshyamdas. One day she interviews a candidate named Mahesh for the position of an Engineer. Despite of his pretending to be wealthy, he does manage to impress her and both fall in love with each other. Ghanshyamdas approves of this marriage. Then one day Sheela and her dad are notified by the Police that Mahesh has been arrested and is being held in a cell for allegedly possessing a briefcase containing 40 Lakh Rupees. Sheela rushes over to the Police Station to provide for bail - only to find out that Mahesh has managed to escape.
