Bemisal is the story of a noble orphan, Sudhir who sacrifices everything he has, from the love of his life to his profession and reputation, to save his foster family.

Thakur Chandrabhan lives a wealthy lifestyle in a small village in India. He is widowed and lives with his sister; a widowed daughter-in-law, Saraswati; and a grand-daughter, Tara, who is of marriageable age. Also living in this household is Bholanath, who is blind since birth, and helps with household chores. Tara's marriage is arranged with a young man, Pratap Singh, from a noble family, who approves of Tara, but demands a dowry of 3 Lakh Rupees. Chandrabhan does not have this much money, but Bholanath has been stashing away cash, that is guarded by a snake, and offers all of it to Pratap, who accepts it and absconds. Blind Bhola is unable to pursue him, but is instead bitten by the snake, regains his vision and sets forth to Bombay to locate Pratap. Several weeks later, Bholanath returns home, just in time to be told that he must marry Tara, as she refuses to marry anyone else. Tara notices something very odd about Bholanath as he calls her "Tara', not as "Little Mistress" as he used to; he is terrified of snakes; and seems more cultured and educated. The family decides to get the two engaged, however, the ceremony is interrupted by the arrival of the police, who have an arrest warrant for Bholanath for Theft, and Murder of a young woman named Lucy. Colonel Saab is also a doctor in a psychiatric hospital in India. His particular interest is in treating patients with a acute mania, which he describes is caused by the male child's longing for the unconditional love he gets from his mother, and after he separates from her, he searches for this love in other women, until he meets the one who he feels is capable of offering the same. But when that does not happen, the male child becomes cynical, full of hatred, and distrust and develops acute mania. His hospital nurse, Radha, had successfully treated one such patient by the name of Dev, and now they have another one by the name of Arun Choudhury. A reluctant Radha is asked to act as his caring mother-like nurse, to gain his trust, love him, and then make him ready to face everyday life. What Colonel Saab, Dev, and Arun do not realize what this is doing to Radha herself when she feels that she cannot act anymore and becomes more and more involved in her patients' lives, knowing fully well that she has to keep up a professional attitude, and that the patient is going to be discharged soon, and may not even remember the care, love and treatment he received from Radha.
