The film is about a Kathakali dancer, Kunhiraman and his relationship with his Guru, Asan. Gradually over the years, as Kunhiraman becomes popular, he becomes arrogant and starts arguing with his Guru.

We are always told that love lasts forever like in children's fairy tales, but the reality is that people change and relationships expire.

Mammootty is David John Kottarathil, a rich unrestrained planter, known popularly by the fancy name D K. He always enjoys life and roams around, getting drunk with his friends. He is the caretaker and secretary of the Cosmo Club. His father, John, accidentally kills Eappachayan,the father of Sara Eapen who D K is supposed to marry. The story takes a turn when Annie (Mukta) a medical student and Sara`s half sister who is taken cared of by David, is accused by the police for committing the murder of Benny, an upcoming politician and the son of political king and former Revenue Minister M C Paul (Vijayraghavan). Now David must save her and also reveal the political family leadership pattern prevalent in the state.

A detective investigates the death of the wife of an emerging politician. The death was first ruled as suicide, but he realizes this is not a suicide but a well planned murder in cold blood. When the wife of Mohan Kumar, an upcoming politician is found dead the suspicion falls on him. Investigation of police rules it as suicide. But Mohan's father-in-law asks for an investigation to know the truth about what happened to his daughter by Detective Shyam Prasad, a man reputed to solve all cases handed out to him. But there is some friction between Shyam and Mohan as their father had an affair with Mohan's mother and caused the family to shatter. But during the investigation he finds out that this was a murder well executed by a smart and dangerous criminal.

The film opens with a mother and son coming to Hardwar to perform last rites of her elder son who had run away from home and is believed to have died. But the mother sees her long lost son on the banks of River Ganga and takes him back to the family. He is Bharath Pisharody a brilliant Sanskrit professor who is respected and loved by everyone including his cousin and lover Meera. But on his day of marriage he runs away leaving behind a heart-broken Meera and her father. Now Pisharody is different man and his family and friends believes that he is on drugs. But actually, the man is mentally disturbed as he suffers from deep depression. Soon his brother discover papers relating to his treatment for mental illness from his locked suitcase. Now everyone starts seeing him in a different way, which leads to the final twist. How Meera helps him come out of this difficult situation in life forms the rest of the gripping tale. —Anonymous

Balan Mash (Mammootty) is an art teacher who lives in a tiny hamlet in Kerala. He has a serene life, with two children, a wife, a mother and a revolutionary brother - Gopi(Mukesh), a typical kootu kudumbam, or joint family, of Kerala. Balan Mash has an uncle who is mentally challenged. His uncle became a mental patient after a separation with his lover; this underlines the deep-rooted belief among their family that one male from each generation will go mad as a person from their past generation had sinned by throwing the idol of 'Devi' in a well.He was cursed by the goddess and became a lunatic.This curse would pass down through generations.Balan Mash's uncle finally died and the talk of the town became - "Who would be next - Balan or Gopi ?" One night changes it all, when Balan has a nightmare. People start suspecting Balan of following the footsteps of his uncle into madness because Balan's uncle (Babu Namboothiri) fell mentally ill with a nightmare. Now Balan's community evaluates each and every move he makes; he is deemed a lunatic and his actions are misinterpreted. Eventually his family joins the gang and he is sent to the asylum. The doctor declares him sane. But society doesn't agree. Helpless, Balan plays mad. Ultimately, Balan's mother (Kaviyoor Ponnamma) poisons him to free him from the world. Apart from the main story line the movie also makes a subtle sketch of the life of people in a matriarchal society. The uncle of the hero ( Ammmavan played by Thilakan) enjoys so much influence in the family affairs that he becomes a catalyst to the hero's slow but steady decline to lunacy.
