Dec 1941, Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and US entered WWII. 10 hrs later, they attacked the Philippines. 10K Americans and 60K Philippinos retreated to the Bataan peninsula. With no navy to rescue them, they were trapped. US decided to focus on Europe and Hitler first. Gen McCarthur is forced to leave the Philippines to Australia and he vows to return. After 4 months, surviving US and Philippino troops surrender to the Japanese Imperial Army. Japanese cant house 70K POWs and hike them on a 60 mile march. 15K men died on what became known as the Bataan death march. Survivors are herded into camps at O'Donnell, Cabanatuan and Palawan. Thousands more die from death, abuse and starvation. By 1944, the tide changes with US victory in Europe. Us focuses on Japan and Japanese become more desperate. They prepare to defend their country to the death (fueled by propaganda that Americans will show no mercy) In Aug 1944, Tokyo war ministry releases a memo on policy towards POWs. Policy is to kill them all and not leave any traces. The film opens with the massacre of prisoners of war on Palawan by the Kempeitai, the Imperial Japanese military's secret police (though factually, it was committed by the Japanese Fourteenth Area Army). Kampeitai put POWs inside air raid shelters, block it from both sides, and set fire to it.. Set in the Philippines in 1945 towards the end of WWII, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Mucci (Benjamin Bratt) and Captain Robert Prince (James Franco), the 6th Ranger Battalion (based in Luzon, Philippines) undertake a daring rescue mission against all odds. Traveling thirty miles behind enemy lines, they intend to liberate over 500 American Soldiers from the notorious Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp in the most audacious rescue ever. In the winter of 1944, World War II was coming to a close. The Japanese held some of the American prisoners who had survived the Bataan Death March in a notorious POW camp at Cabanatuan and subjected them to harsh treatment; many prisoners were also stricken with malaria. At the time of the raid the camp held about 500 prisoners. Meanwhile at Lingayen Gulf, the 6th Ranger Battalion under Lt. Col Mucci is ordered by Lt. Gen. Walter Krueger (Dale Dye) to liberate all of the POWs at Cabanatuan prison camp before they are killed by the Japanese. The film chronicles the efforts of the Rangers, Alamo Scouts from the 6th Army and Filipino guerrillas as they undertake the Raid at Cabanatuan. Major Robert Lapham (Brett Tucker) is a stay behind from the Bataan campaign and has organized Filipino guerrillas as a source of intel for the US forces. Lapham says as US forces advance Japanese are likely to murder the 500 men at Cabanatuan, rather than release them. The men at Palawan were killed on the rumor that McCarthur had invaded. Prince is to design the raid plan. Lapham says that the toughest part is the last 800 yards, with no cover, only plain open land, leading to the POW camp. Throughout the film, the viewpoint switches between the POWs at Cabanatuan, the Rangers, the Filipino resistance and the Japanese. The POWs are Cabanatuan are led by Major Daniel Gibson (Joseph Fiennes) and Captain Redding (Marton Csokas). Daniel contacts Margaret via the Philippino resistance. Margaret is the wife of Daniel's CO, who died in combat. Daniel has feelings for Margaret, but never acted on them. In particular, the film covers the resistance work undertaken by nurse Margaret Utinsky (Connie Nielsen), who smuggled medicine into the POW camps (she risks her life in Manila to procure the Quinine). The Kempeitai arrested her and sent her to Fort Santiago prison. Mucci green lights Prince's plan. Corporal Alridge (Clayne Crawford) & Private First Class Lucas (Sam Worthington) are given a mortar to carry. Meanwhile the Japanese Army retreats from Cabanatuan. The POWs think McCarthur got them on the run. In the officer's mess they find tons of provisions meant for the POWs (Japanese were starving them deliberately). Shortly thereafter the Kempeitai move in and take control of the camp. Daniel is told by Lieutenant Hikobe (Masa Yamaguchi) to cooperate till the US forces arrive, but he intends to kill all POWs (he was there at Palawan). Meanwhile Mucci's forces are 11 miles away from the POW and making slow progress due to movement of 30K Japanese troops in the area. Mucci reaches a village where he meets Captain Juan Pajota (Cesar Montano) of Philippino army. The Japanese had killed 100 people in the village, for helping Juan's men. Mucci also rendezvous with Lapham and his men who come with more intel on the camp, but the exact details are still missing. Juan tells them to delay the attack on the camp since a whole division of Japanese Army is likely to pass in front of the camp in the next 24 hrs. Juan tells Prince that most of the POWs are crippled or sick and they will need carts to move them and bring them back to Platero village. Hikobe gets news from Manila on Margaret's arrest and tries to get Daniel to confess and give the names of her collaborators. Daniel refuses. He is sick with malaria. Hikobe had captured Margaret already and hence all quinine stolen by her was also confiscated. Her courier to Cabanatuan was also captured and killed. Thus, no medicine was making its way to the POW camps. Hokibe receives the fuel shipments and awaits orders from Tokyo to liquidate prisoners. Redding tries to escape and is captured. Hokibe kills 10 POWs as a lesson to the rest. The day before the raid, Juan confirms that the camp has over 300 Japanese and just 1/2 mile away from the camp is a large Japanese Army contingent with over 1000 men. That contingent is just beyond a small bridge that Mucci has to hold, if he has any hope of attacking the camp. Juan and his men volunteer to hold the bridge by damaging it with explosives and positioning his men at the other side of the bridge to catch the Japanese in a crossfire. The raid starts at 1730 .. Mucci arranges for a plane to fly over the camp at that time, to distract the guards and allowing his men to low crawl close to the camp's main gate. units are deployed to hold the bridge and the highway on the other side of the camp. Prince will be the last man out. Lieutenant Riley (Craig McLachlan) is to start the raid at 1930 hours once he is in position on the main gate. But he sends recon to check if all other teams are in place. this causes a 10 mins delay. Rily takes the first shot. Juan and his men blow up the bridge. Altridge and Lucas blow up the trucks and the tanks inside the camp. Things go to plan and the Japanese soldiers at the camp are neutralized and the rescue begins. Mucci protects the flanks of Juan and his men as he holds the bridge. Hokibe tries to kill the POWs via mortar fire, but Riley flanks Hokibe's position and gets into hand-to-hand combat with him. Riley kills Hokibe with his own gun. Prince signals the end of the raid with a red flare over the camp. 2 men died in the raid. By the next day, the POWs reach American front lines. Margaret comes to meet Daniel, but Daniel doesn't survive the night. 511 POWs were rescued. 21 Philippino resistance fighters were killed. Mucci and Prince were awarded the Distinguished service cross for leading the raid. Margaret was eventually released but spent six weeks recovering from gangrene as a result of injuries sustained from beatings. Once recovered, she escaped to Bataan, where she served as a nurse with the Philippine Commonwealth troops and recognized guerrilla units until liberation in February 1945.

A woman endowed with the speed, reflexes, and senses of a cat, walks a thin line between criminal and hero, even as a detective doggedly pursues her fascinated by both of her personas.

The film opens at a school in New Jersey in 1982, where a boy is picking on another boy. We see Gracie Hart as a child who beats up the bully and tries to help the victim (whom she liked). Instead of thanking Grace the victim criticizes her by saying he disliked her because he did not want a girl to help him. She promptly punches the boy in the nose and sulks in the playground. We go forward in time to where Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) works for the Federal Bureau of Investigation with Eric Matthews (Benjamin Bratt) as a Special Agent. We see her on a mission where she does not follow orders from her superior and tries to stop their target from choking. Because of her actions the target takes Grace hostage and tries to escape from the siege. This results in a shootout with the FBI agents surrounding the building. As a consequence, one of her squad members Agent Grant (Gabriel Folse) gets shot. She is put on a desk job by chief McDonald (Ernie Hudson). Grace lives in a tiny apartment with no social life. She eats microwave dinners each night and spends her spare time in workout sessions in her home gym. She uses her FBI badge and siren to beat traffic and cut the line at the local coffee shop. The bureau receives a threat against the 75th annual Miss United States beauty pageant in San Antonio, Texas from notorious domestic terrorist "Citizen". Eric is elected to lead the mission to stop a supposed attack. Grace is the only one in the office with some tangible ideas on the next steps required in this situation. A computer search identifies Hart as the female FBI agent best qualified to go undercover as a contestant (as Miss New Jersey, the original having quit after she was discovered to have been in a pornographic film), although she pays little attention to her femininity. Pageant Organizers Stan Fields (William Shatner) and Kathy Morningside (Candice Bergen) agree to on-board Grace as one of the contestants undercover. Eric wants Grace to get into the top 5 so she has access to all parts of the stage at all times. Beauty pageant coach Victor Melling (Michael Caine), whose reputation was ruined after his last contestant criticized his methods. Victor considers Grace an insult as he has trained 10 out of the previous 11 pageant winners, which his contestant entered. But he is a perfectionist. Victor teaches the tomboyish Hart how to dress, walk, and act like a contestant. She is unused to such behavior. Several suspects exist, including competition director and former pageant winner Kathy Morningside; her unpleasant assistant Frank Tobin (Steve Monroe); veteran emcee Stan Fields who, like Morningside, is being replaced with a younger person; and Rhode Island's Cheryl Frasier (Heather Burns), possibly a radical animal rights activist. Other contestants include May Jo "Texas" (Deirdre Quinn), Karen "New York" (Melissa De Sousa), Leslie "California" (Wendy Raquel Robinson), Alana "Hawaii" (Asia De Marcos) and so on. Representing New Jersey as "Gracie Lou Freebush", Hart impresses the audience by playing the glass harp, (playing music on water glasses). Grace tackles an innocent bystander when she spots a gun on his person and gets an earful from Kathy who says that she has dedicated her life to the pageant, and she will not allow Grace to ruin it. Grace adjusts to the contestant life after getting a pep talk from Eric. She even participates in the swimsuit round in a bikini and answers "World Peace" to the standard question, "what does the society need the most, right now". She unexpectedly becomes friends with Frasier and the other contestants. When Citizen is caught elsewhere, McDonald wants to move the team out. But Grace argues for the FBI to stay and says that Citizen never threatened the pageant, and the letter was sent by a copycat. The handwriting on the letter was different to the past letter, and the DNA test said that the letter was licked by a woman. Grace suspects Kathy, who is getting fired this year and won the pageant after the original winner got food poisoning under mysterious circumstances. Hart gives up her badge and gun and continues the investigation alone. Just as Matthews is going to board the plane back to the bureau, he works out that Hart's suspicions were correct. Hart surprises everyone, including herself, by becoming runner-up to Frasier. This is stunning since the agreement with Kathy was only to get Grace into the top 5, beyond which she was on her own. The agents discover that Morningside and Tobin (secretly her son) impersonated Citizen due to her grudge against the network for firing her. Tobin had a dark, criminal past which he had hidden by changing his last name. Grace figures out that the bomb is in the tiara, when she learns that Tobin took the tiara away for an unscheduled polishing session. They prevent them from murdering Frasier with a bomb in the title tiara. Kathy's plan was to use the murder to prove to the network that only she was capable of guiding the pageant through the crisis. Hart's fellow contestants choose her as Miss Congeniality, and she starts a relationship with Matthews.

The discovery of the murder of an American businessman, Peter Hardin, and his family, outrages U.S. President Edward Bennett (Donald Moffat), Hardin's personal friend. When Hardin is found to have been connected to a Colombian drug cartel, from which he skimmed over $650 million, Bennett tells James Cutter (Harris Yulin), his National Security Advisor, that the cartels represent a "clear and present danger" to the United States, tacitly instructing him to use force against the men responsible for his friend's murder. Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford), appointed acting Deputy Director of Intelligence after Vice Admiral Jim Greer (James Earl Jones) is stricken with cancer, asks Congress for increased funding for ongoing CIA operations in Colombia, believing the funds to be for advisory purposes only. Congress is concerned that the FBI has asked for similar funding increases in the past to carry out covert military ops against state enemies. But Ryan gives a personal assurance that that's not the case. $75M is issued. Keeping Ryan in the dark, Cutter turns to CIA Deputy Director of Operations Bob Ritter (Henry Czerny) to take down the cartel. Ritter insists on Cutter giving him a written authorization before he conducts any covert operations on foreign soil. Ritter assembles a black operations team code-named RECIPROCITY with the help of John Clark (Willem Dafoe). Clark also knows this is black ops and demands payment into his bank account before he moves. The whole thing has been hidden from the U.S. Congress. The team inserts itself into Colombia, with Clark running logistics and Captain Ricardo Ramirez (Benjamin Bratt) of an SF-ODA team commanding the squad on the ground in clandestine search-and-destroy missions against the drug cartel. Their team carries out several hits on planes full of drugs, planning to ship to the U.S. All of them belong to Escobedo. Ryan finds that 3 years ago, Hardin received a large infusion of foreign capital that he invested in shopping malls in the U.S. and posted record profits. It is clear to Ryan that Hardin was laundering money for the Columbian drug cartels. Meanwhile, Bennett sends Ryan to Colombia to investigate Hardin's cartel connection and also to retrieve the $650MM sitting in Hardin's offshore accounts. Ryan would need to establish who Hardin was working for before the U.S. Govt. could seize the money. Greer knows that Ryan has been trapped and tells him to lean on Clark in case he gets into a mess. Jean Fowler (Belita Moreno) is the FBI officer in charge in Bogota and tells Ryan about Escobedo's operations, including Cortez (for whom they don't have a picture). Ryan meets Clark, but Clark doesn't tell Ryan about the hits. Clark takes Ryan seriously when he says he is Greer's man. The cartel leader responsible for Hardin's murder, Ernesto Escobedo (Miguel Sandoval), is enraged when the U.S. attempts to claim the $650 million that was stolen from him and has his intelligence officer, Félix Cortez (Joaquim de Almeida), try to retrieve the funds. Cortez did not agree with Escobedo's strategy to kill Hardin since he was a politically connected figure in the U.S. Cortez visits the U.S. and has a new connection, Moria Wolfson (Ann Magnuson), whom he uses as cover for his spying activities. Cortez is careful to hide himself from Moria's friends whenever he meets her. Moria is on Jack Ryan's FBI team investigating the Hardin murders. Meanwhile, Ramirez's team starts cleaning out Escobedo's cocaine factories hidden in the jungles. Bennett sends FBI Director Emil Jacobs (Tom Tammi) to meet Ryan in Colombia and negotiate with the Columbian Govt. for the money (after Ryan had told Bennett that the link between Escobedo and Hardin was established (Hardin was buying coffee from Escobedo, but was paying $6200 per pound), but Columbia would want to keep a large portion of the funds), and when Cortez discovers this (from Moria, whole unwittingly discloses Jacobs plans to Cortez), he plans an ambush, engineering it so that suspicion will fall on Escobedo. Ryan barely escapes the ambush by cartel hit-men (Cortez kills Moria after travelling to the U.S.), but the remainder of the entourage is killed. Ryan returns to the U.S. Escobedo then summons a meeting with other cartel leaders, which Clark's team hits with an airstrike, but Escobedo arrives late and survives. Several women and children also die in the attack. Ryan finds it strange that Moria was killed the same day as Emil. He checks her answering machine and finds a recorded message from a Latin sounding guy. Sound analysis provides a match with Cortez. Ryan also finds that Ritter ordered the airstrike on the cartel meeting. Cortez discovers the American involvement in the strike and meets with Cutter (he faxes Cutter that he knows American troops are in Columbia fighting an illegal war and threatens to expose it) to broker a deal (the meeting happens in Panama). Cortez will assassinate Escobedo and take over the cartel, promising to reduce drug shipments to the U.S. and allow American law enforcement to make regular arrests to make it appear as if the U.S. is winning the drug war. In exchange, Cutter will shut down all U.S. operations in Colombia and allow Cortez to hunt down Clark's soldiers. Cutter agrees and orders Ritter to get rid of all evidence of their operations and cut off the troops in Colombia from all support. Ryan is played a recording of the conversation between Cutter and Cortez. He hacks Ritter's computer and discovers the conspiracy unfolding in Colombia. The Reciprocity team is ambushed in Colombia by Cortez's mercenaries. Ritter had shut down the satellite link so Clark could not contact the men as they screamed for help. Cutter and Ritter tell Clark that Ryan found out everything and threatened to expose them if they didn't shut it down. They say that Ryan is on his way to Bogota, and if Ryan is out of the way, they are back online. Basically, Ritter and Cutter recruit Clark to kill Ryan for them. Ryan arrives and convinces Clark to allow him to help. Clark calls Ritter and says he killed Ryan and wants the satellites turned back on. But Ritter hangs up on him, proving Ryan's point. They find the team's sniper (Ryan buys a helicopter for $2M and goes searching in the jungles with Clark), Chavez (Raymond Cruz), who tells them that Ramirez and a squad mate have been captured and the remainder have been killed. Ryan visits Escobedo's mansion and shares his intelligence on Cortez. Enraged, Escobedo confronts Cortez but is killed by Cortez's associate. Ryan, Clark, and Chávez rescue the prisoners, kill Cortez, and escape. Ryan confronts the President and tells him he intends to inform the Congressional Oversight Committee about the conspiracy despite the damage it could do to his career. As he walks out of the Oval Office, Cutter asks to speak with him, but Ryan ignores him. Ryan then begins his testimony to Congress.

In 1996, LAPD Sgt. John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) leads a raid to rescue a busload of hostages taken by the psychopathic criminal Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes). Spartan is nicknamed "The Demolition Man" for the large amounts of collateral damage he often causes in apprehending suspects. Spartan mounts an unauthorized assault to capture Phoenix. Spartan kills all of Phoenix's henchmen and approaches the building where Phoenix has kept the hostages captive. After a scan of the area shows no sign of the hostages' presence, Spartan enters Phoenix's stronghold and captures him, but Phoenix sets off explosive gasoline to destroy the building. Spartan carries Phoenix out of the building before it explodes. The hostages' bodies (numbering 30) are found in the rubble, leading the LAPD to arrest Spartan as well. Phoenix claims that Spartan knew about them and attacked anyway. Both men are sentenced to lengthy terms (Spartan is imprisoned for 70 years and not eligible for parole before 2046) in "CryoPrison," where they are kept in cryogenic storage and exposed to subconscious rehabilitation techniques. In 2032, Phoenix is thawed for a parole hearing, but he escapes from the Cryo-Prison by saying a secret password (which releases him from his restraints), without knowing how he had learned it. He subsequently murders his guards and the warden, making his way into the city where he easily overpowers and kills several police officers who have never had to deal with violent crime. By this time, the Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara regions have merged into the pacifist utopia of San Angeles, under the guidance of Dr. Raymond Cocteau (Nigel Hawthorne). The city has eliminated crime, and the police are mostly confined to their station. All of humanity's vices have been outlawed, and the police have become incapable of dealing with violent and pathological criminals such as Phoenix. Lieutenant Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock) is an idealistic SAPD officer who is fascinated with 20th-century culture. Alfredo Garcia (Benjamin Bratt) is Huxley's colleague. The SAPD is left shocked by the murders committed by Phoenix. Huxley learns that Phoenix escaped with one of the doctor's vehicles at the prison facility and tracks the vehicle. Police officers are dispatched to apprehend Phoenix. Phoenix easily defeats the officers and escapes. He somehow knows all the safety or access codes used across various equipment across the city. Phoenix accesses an automated information kiosk and learns that 20th century firearms are now only kept in museums. Phoenix is subconsciously programmed to hunt for a man named Edgar Friendly, but he does not know why. Cocteau orders SAPD Chief George to apprehend Phoenix by any means necessary. Edgar Friendly is the leader of the resistance movement and Cocteau is determined to apprehend him and bring him to justice. Huxley learns about Spartan's career from veteran officer Zachary Lamb (Bill Cobbs), who suggests that their best chance to stop Phoenix is by enlisting someone with the experience and mindset to anticipate his actions. Huxley learns that in his time Spartan arrested 1000 criminals in 3 years. Huxley persuades her superior Chief George Earle (Bob Gunton) to parole Spartan and reinstate him to active duty. Spartan is brought out from Cryogenic suspension and thawed out. He is told that Phoenix is on the loose and has killed 11 people so far. Local police cannot deal with him as SAPD had no homicides in the last 16 years. Spartan finds life in San Angeles to be sterile and oppressive, since all types of behavior deemed immoral or unhealthy, such as sports, alcohol, swearing, eating meat, and having sex have been declared illegal. Spartan has trouble adapting to life in this peaceful setting, while most of Huxley's fellow officers especially Head Chief George Earle (Bob Gunton), find him brutish and uncivilized. Anticipating that Phoenix will attempt to secure firearms, Spartan has Huxley lead him to a museum. Phoenix breaks into a museum's weapon exhibit to arm himself. To Spartan's surprise, Phoenix is even deadlier than before. Phoenix escapes and holds Cocteau at gunpoint, but is unable to kill him, as Cocteau had implanted a command in his rehabilitation program to prevent him from doing so. Cocteau instead orders Phoenix to kill Edgar Friendly (Denis Leary), the leader of a resistance group called the Scraps who refuse to conform to Cocteau's moral ideals and who live in the underground ruins of old Los Angeles. Spartan first encounters the Scraps when they raid a dinner party given by Cocteau. Spartan and Huxley witness this exchange on security cameras and review the Cryo-Prison records. They discover that Phoenix's rehabilitation program was tailored by Cocteau to make him even more dangerous than he was in 1996, including martial arts, computer hacking, knowledge of torture techniques, and murderous impulses; by contrast, Spartan's program taught him to knit and sew. Spartan deduces that Cocteau was training Phoenix with the goal of eliminating Friendly and go to the ruins to meet with Friendly and warn him. Meanwhile Phoenix meets with Cocteau, realizing what he has done, and has him release other prisoners to assist him. During a car chase through San Angeles, Phoenix admits to Spartan that the hostages he took in 1996 were already dead before the building exploded, so Spartan spent 36 years in prison for a crime he never committed. Phoenix escapes and Spartan arms himself with help from the Scraps as they emerge in force to get food. Realizing that he cannot kill Cocteau himself because of his rehabilitation, Phoenix instead has one of his men do it and begins thawing the CryoPrison's most dangerous convicts. Spartan enters the facility and fights Phoenix. Spartan kills Phoenix by freezing him solid. The uncontrolled quick-freezing effect then triggers an explosion that destroys the Cryo-prison. With Cocteau dead and the prison destroyed, the police and Scraps find themselves at odds over how to run their society. The police fear that the loss of Cocteau and the Cryo-Prison will end society as they know it, but Spartan suggests that they and the Scraps cooperate to combine the best aspects of order and personal freedom. He kisses Huxley and they leave together.
