Tale of a female nurse trying to maintain a balance between her professional life and her emotions who falls victim to the natural feeling of love and compassion when a person takes care of another person. Colonel Saab is also a doctor in a psychiatric hospital in India. His particular interest is in treating patients with a acute mania, which he describes is caused by the male child's longing for the unconditional love he gets from his mother, and after he separates from her, he searches for this love in other women, until he meets the one who he feels is capable of offering the same. But when that does not happen, the male child becomes cynical, full of hatred, and distrust and develops acute mania. His hospital nurse, Radha, had successfully treated one such patient by the name of Dev, and now they have another one by the name of Arun Choudhury. A reluctant Radha is asked to act as his caring mother-like nurse, to gain his trust, love him, and then make him ready to face everyday life. What Colonel Saab, Dev, and Arun do not realize what this is doing to Radha herself when she feels that she cannot act anymore and becomes more and more involved in her patients' lives, knowing fully well that she has to keep up a professional attitude, and that the patient is going to be discharged soon, and may not even remember the care, love and treatment he received from Radha. As a fugitive on the run, he meets Anokhi (Vyjayantimala) and her assorted group who make their living by any means, begging, stealing, or deceit. At first, Pratap is derisive of Anokhi and her friends. He soon realizes the camaraderie they share and their inherent goodness. He slowly wins them over and changes their erring ways. Anokhi and her friends then help Pratap find the real murderer.

`Shree 420` follows naive, hardworking, honest, Raj (Raj Kapoor), who comes to Bombay from Allahabad in search of employment. He soon discovers that his university diploma and a gold medal have little worth in this exploitative city. He later encounters Vidya (Nargis), a poor school teacher and the two fall in love. Finally, Raj lands a job in a laundry. One day, a rich client Maya (Nadira), discovers his proficiency with cards and takes him to a posh club where he wins her a big sum of money. Later, Raj gets involved in underhand dealings with an unscrupulous businessman, Seth Sonachand Dharmanand (Nemo). Gradually, Raj becomes completely corrupted and is alienated from the people he loves like Vidya. Raj`s conscience is awakened when he discovers Sonachand`s scheme to exploit poor people and he decides to right the wrong.

Roopa lives in a chawl in a slum with her alcoholic paternal uncle, who sits at home and forces her to go out to work, earn and buy alcohol for him. Her outlook on life is close to despair, and when she finds no work, earns no money, she is severely beaten by him and thrown out of the room. She decides to kill herself, but is rescued by an artiste named Ashok, who asks her to model for him. Soon they become fast friends, she even moves into his palatial home, and both earn quite a bit of money from selling the paintings. Then one day Raj re-enters her life, and it was as though her past had come to re-visit. She longed to be with Raj. Ashok is unhappy because of the competition, as he is in love with Roopa and would like to marry her. Roopa decides in favor of Raj and decides to run away with him, little knowing that Raj is only interested in her newly acquired wealth, which he intends to procure by hook or by crook, to repay his debts to a gangster named Advani. Will Roopa be drawn back into her old despaired life again?

A traumatized beautiful woman loses her memory in a train accident. Prakash and his beautiful sister live an impoverished lifestyle in a rented room in Bombay. They do not even have enough to eat and are three months behind in their rent. The neighborhood has put pressure on their landlord to evict them as they suspect his sister of being overly friendly with a homeless male who calls himself Laatsaheb. Things only get worse after Prakash is killed and his sister decides to re-locate by train. While traveling she finds her co-passenger is none other than Laatsaheb - who confesses that he loves her. Before she could respond, the train meets with an accident, he survives with minor injuries but she loses her memory, is hospitalized and presumed to have lost her mind also.
