Los Angeles, 1969. As the final chapter of Hollywood`s golden age draws to a close, fading TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The ninth film from Quentin Tarantino features an ensemble cast and multiple storylines, and is a glowing tribute to the memories of a bygone era.

Four-star General Glen McMahon (Brad Pitt) (a character based on General Stanley McChrystal. He is portrayed as an accomplished general with degrees from West Point and Yale brought in to bring a resolution to the conflict in Afghanistan) is sent to Afghanistan to bring the war to an end, but finds himself to be the one under attack. Glen was from a military family. He was a straight A student and a trouble maker all his life. His troops loved him as he never sent them where he wouldn't go himself. Prior to Afghanistan Glen was heading the secret forces in IRaq. Glen felt that the Afghan war was not being won as it was not being led. in Iraq he authored a book on leadership "One leg at a time".. The first thing Glen tries is to get the military commanders of the 43 nations serving under his command to come out of their cabins and share common space. Colonel Cory Staggart (John Magaro) (an Army Ranger and General McMahon's executive officer). Major General Greg Pulver (Anthony Michael Hall) (ISAF Director of Intelligence, loosely based on Mike Flynn). Greg graduated in the same class as Glen from Westpoint and has worked with Glen ever since. USAF Tech Sgt. Andy Moon (RJ Cyler) (information technology support assistant), who fixed all gadgets for Glen. Lieutenant Commander Pete Duckman (Anthony Hayes) (a Navy SEAL and member of McMahon's staff), and nobody knew what exactly he did. USN Rear Admiral Simon Ball (Daniel Betts) (McMahon's Senior Public Affairs Officer). Matt Little (Topher Grace) (a former lobbyist turned McMahon's civilian media adviser). Sgt. Willy Dunne (Emory Cohen) (General McMahon's body man), Willy did Glen's clothes, Ironing and mundane stuff like that. Pat McKinnon (Alan Ruck) (United States Ambassador to Afghanistan loosely based off Karl Eikenberry). Dick Waddle (Nicholas Jones) (loosely based off Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke) & Ray Canucci (Griffin Dunne) (a United States Department of State senior official). Glen meets Pat, Dick and Ray, who tell him give an assessment on what he needs to finish the war in Afghan but also cautiously instruct him not to ask for more troops. Glen has a general condescension of civilians who he thinks have not earned their power like he had. To Glen they were just obstacles in his path. Glen next meets Afghan President Hamid Karzai (Ben Kingsley) and invites on his Afghan assessment tour. But Hamid feigns ill health to talk Glen out of it. Glen goes on a tour of Afghanistan and quickly figures that the war is not being won as its an insurgency (a war led by local people & not an army). So the US strategy has been counter insurgency (install a local government, provide security so that democracy can flourish, train the local forces, stimulate the local economy (which is heroin basically), build the local infra (schools, hospitals and stuff like that), Nation building, hearts and minds). The top British commander in charge of Helmand province tells Glen that the whole province is owned by Taliban and the coalition only secures the base there. He advises Glen to cut Helmand loose and concentrate on provinces where there is some support for their mission. Counter insurgency has been a failure everywhere (Vietnam, British empire and so on) as you cant build a nation at gunpoint. But Glen believed it hadn't been done as it hadn't been done right. His strategy is to take Helmand and Kandahar, precisely as everyone thinks Americans cant have it. He asks for 40,000 additional troops which makes Dick furious. He request is eventually turned down by US Secretary of State (based on Hillary Clinton). He is asked to wait till the Afghan elections are over. Till then his orders are SNORPP (Systemic Negation Of Repetitive Procedural Practice). Glen meets with a group of marines on their way back from R&R in Italy. They are all tired and listless. Sgt. Ricky Ortega (Will Poulter) is the squad leader and Cpl. Billy Cole (Keith Stanfield) is a disillusioned Marine. Billy grills Glen on how the marines can be winning hearts and minds of civilians when he knows every 10th one of them is trying to kill him. He does not understand Glen's policy of medals for "Courageous Restraint" which is Glen's way of reminding marines that they are here to protect the civilians. On the day of the Afghan elections Captain Badi Basim (Aymen Hamdouchi) joins the team. Badi is a scholarly Afghan National Army officer who becomes General McMahon's Aide-De-Camp. Dick & pat inform Glen that the elections had widespread reports of graft and hence would need to be re-done. Glen is furious. He leaks his assessment report to the media and gives a 60 minutes interview saying that he has spoken to the President just once since taking charge of the forces in Afghanistan 70 days ago. President Obama (Reggie Brown) authorizes a 30,000 unit troop surge in response, but with a expiry period of just 18 months. Glen is again furious as this basically means that the Taliban can simply wait out 18 months and then retake the country when the troop surge goes back down. Since the troop surge is not enough, Glen travels through Europe trying to get the rest of the coalition to increase their troop commitments. In Paris, he meets his wife Jeanie McMahon (Meg Tilly), spending an awkward morning with her. The next morning Glen is invited to a meeting with Obama on-board air force one. Glen has to reschedule his entire day to be able to meet the president, only to see the President snub him and not taking him on-board Air force one. The french agree to give Glen the extra troops but warn that Germans may be inclined to withdraw altogether. Sean Cullen (Scoot McNairy) (a cynical journalist for Rolling Stone who accompanies McMahon and his staff and acts as narrator throughout the film, loosely based on author Michael Hastings). Sean is assigned to cover Glen in all his official appearances. Due to the volcano eruption in Greenland, Glen and his entourage has to travel to Berlin by road. In Berlin a German Politician (Tilda Swinton) relentlessly drives home the point that Glen's troop surge is driven by his own personal ambition to leave his own legacy in the war theatre in Afghanistan. In fact, the real reason for the war, the Al-Qaeda was not mentioned by Glen even once for the troop surge. She says to Glen that her job is to make sure that Glen's personal ambition does not carry a huge cost for everyone else. Glen is shaken to the core by this. Germany agrees to the troop surge, but says that they wont leave the base. The surge starts and with that Glen attacks Helmand province. The Italy R&R platoon is the first back on ground leading the offensive. The unit comes under attack but Billy realizes it was only a family that was retaliating when their unit's stray grenade killed their little girl. Once the town is secure, Glen comes to speak to the town elders. He speaks to them about his vision of roads, schools and jobs. But the Pashtuns tell Glen that when the Americans leave the Taliban will simply move back and asks them to leave now. Admist all this, Sean Cullen's article comes out that describes Glen and his entourage as shit talking the President and the Vice President and having drunken parties all over Europe instead of fighting the war. Glen knows he is finished. He is recalled to Washington and fired by Obama Glen's replacement is General Bob White (Russell Crowe) (similar to David Petraeus)

In 1939, Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer (Brad Pitt) leaves behind his pregnant wife to join Peter Aufschnaiter (David Thewlis) in a team attempting to summit Nanga Parbat in the British Raj (present-day part of Pakistan). Austria in under German Nazi occupation at the time. Before Heinrich 4 German expeditions have attempted Nanga Parbat and failed. 11 Germans lost their lives. It is now a matter of national pride. During the climb (in July they reach base camp), Heinrich slips and falls and badly injures his leg. Heinrich continues to climb, but when Peter slips, he is dangling off a cliff, with only Heinrich holding his rope. Due to his injury, Heinrich is not able to pivot off the rocks properly and almost loses Peter. Peter manages to climb out and sees the extent of Heinrich's injury. By 5th Aug, they are at camp 5 and holed up in fierce storms over the mountain. After an avalanche, Peter orders the team to climb back down, even though Heinrich asks for just 2 Sherpa to proceed and summit on his own. When World War II begins in 1939, they are arrested by the authorities for being enemy aliens and imprisoned in a prisoner-of-war camp in Dehradun (They reach there on Oct 15th, 1939) in the Himalayan foothills, in the present-day Indian state of Uttarakhand. In 1 yr Heinrich makes 4 escape attempts. Harrer's wife, Ingrid (Ingeborga Dapkunaite), who has given birth to a son he has not seen, sends him divorce papers from Austria, by then annexed by Nazi Germany. In Sep 1942, Heinrich and Peter make their first escape attempt. Peter dresses like an English officer and the rest as Indian workers, and manage to fool the prison guards who were mostly Indian and the only British officer, away for a brief while. After escaping Heinrich takes off on his own, and heads to Tibet. After a few weeks Peter catches up with him on the trail. Harrer and Aufschnaiter cross into Tibet. After being initially rejected by the isolated nation (& the highest country on Earth). The leader of the border village apprehends Heinrich and Peter and sends them back towards India. A monk explains that the 13th Dalai Llama prophesied that a foreign force will lead to the demise of Tibet and hence the whole country is hostile to foreigners. The leader assigns 2 escorts to walk them back to the Indian border 40 Kms away. They manage to trick their escorts and slip back into Tibet. Heinrich tricks Peter in selling his watch to trade for food, but later Peter finds that Heinrich has 3 such watches. Peter is amazed that Heinrich is so arrogant and selfish and has no remorse for his actions. Heinrich apologizes and gives his watches to Peter. The travel long distances. They are attacked by bandits and manage to escape. Peter has frostbite in the foot, but Heinrich saves it by giving him his boots. They eat raw horse meat to survive. They manage to travel in disguise to the Tibetan capital city of Lhasa (they reach there in 1944). There, they become the house guests of Tibetan diplomat Kungo Tsarong (Mako). They were caught eating food served to their dogs and brought to Tsarong. Tsarong asks Regent (Danny Denzongpa) for permission to let the foreigners stay in light of their arduous journey and the regent agrees reluctantly. The Tibetan senior official Ngapoi Ngawang Jigme (BD Wong) also extends friendship to the two foreigners with gifts of custom-made Western suits. Aufschnaiter falls in love with the tailor, Pema Lhaki (Lhakpa Tsamchoe), and marries her. Harrer opts to remain single, both to focus on his new job of surveying the land and not wishing to experience another failed relationship. Ngawang Jigme points to the regent that the Chinese are increasing their influence in the region by giving money to Tibetan monasteries, but the Regent ignores him. Ngawang Jigme complains to the Chinse mission in Lhasa, but he is rebuffed there as well. He can see the Chinese mission amassing weapons and installing radio equipment at their embassy. In 1945, Harrer plans to return to Austria upon hearing of the war's end. However, he receives a cold letter from his son, Rolf, rejecting Harrer as his father, and this deters him from leaving Tibet. Soon afterwards, Harrer is invited to the Potala Palace (By the Great Mother (Jetsun Pema)) and becomes the 14th Dalai Lama's (Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk) tutor in world geography, science, and Western culture. Harrer and Dalai Lama end up befriending each other. He calls Heinrich "Yellow Head" The Dalai Lama wants Heinrich to build him a movie theatre, but the workers refuse to dig as there are worms on the site. Buddhists believe in preserving all life as any living soul could have been their mother in the past. So, Heinrich makes a plan to dig all worms from the ground and transplant them to a different site. Meanwhile, political relations with China sour as they make plans to invade Tibet (as a new Chairman Mao Tse-Sung takes control of China and decides to re-unite the motherland). The Regent closes the Chinese embassy and throws them out. The Chinese mission is dismantled and shut down. Heinrich completes the move theatre and uses an old car engine as generator to bring electricity to power it. Dalai Lama is distraught as he has visions of Chinese army destroying his village in Tibet. Heinrich later learns that this event actually took place. Soon, China invades. The Chinese generals are invited to Lhasa where they arrogantly dismiss Tibetan traditions, insult the monks and refuse to let the Dalai Lama sit higher than them. The Chinese General Chang Jing Wu (Ric Young) offers regional autonomy if Tibet accepts China as their political master. But Dalai Lama offers a message of peace and Buddha. General later tells Jigme that religion is a poison and must be rooted out. China attacks with 84,000 troops. Ngawang Jigme leads the Tibetan army (8000 men and 50 pieces of artillery against PLA which is 1 MM men strong) (Tibet is a peace loving nation and many soldiers still wore a mesh armor) at the border town of Chamdo (if Chamdo falls, Tibet will fall) to halt the advancing People's Liberation Army. Jigme however knew the hopelessness of the task and wanted to placate the Chinese to gain favors later during their occupation. However, he ends up surrendering and blows up the Tibetan ammunition dump after the one-sided Battle of Chamdo. Tibet loses the war in 11 days flat. During the treaty signing, Kungo Tsarong tells Harrer that if Jigme had not destroyed the weapons supply, the Tibetan guerrillas could have held the mountain passes for months or even years; long enough to appeal to other nations for help. He also states that, for Tibetans, capitulation is like a death sentence. As the Chinese occupy Tibet, Harrer condemns Ngawang Jigme for betraying his country, declaring their friendship over. Out of anger, Harrer further humiliates the senior official by returning the jacket that Ngawang Jigme gave him as a present, a grave insult in Tibetan culture; as well as by throwing him onto the ground before storming off. Harrer tries to convince the Dalai Lama to flee, but he refuses; not wanting to abandon his people. The Dalai Lama encourages Harrer to return to Austria and be a father to his son. After the enthronement ceremony, in which the Dalai Lama is formally enthroned as the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet, Harrer returns to Austria in 1951. Harrer's son, Rolf, refuses to meet him at first, but Harrer leaves a music box that the Dalai Lama gave him and this piques the boy's interest. Years later, Harrer and Rolf (now a teenager) are seen mountain-climbing together, suggesting that they have mended their relationship. 1 MM Tibetans died under Chinese occupation. 6000 monasteries destroyed. In 1959, Dalai Lama fled to India. In 1989 he won the noble peace prize. He and Heinrich remained friends to this day.

Lorenzo "Shakes" Carcaterra (Jason Patric), Thomas "Tommy" Marcano (Billy Crudup), Michael Sullivan (Brad Pitt), and John Reilly (Ron Eldard) are four childhood friends who grew up in Hell's Kitchen, New York City in the mid-1960s. Hell's kitchen was an immigrant neighborhood and life was tough. Domestic violence was a daily occurrence, but the Kitchen also protected its own from outside criminals. During this time, the local priest, Father Bobby Carillo (Robert De Niro), plays a very important part in their lives and keeps an eye on them. They served as altar boys at the church. However, early on they start running small errands for a local gangster, King Benny (Vittorio Gassman). The boys also had a competition going on who could play the boldest prank. Mostly it was innocent stuff like sitting in the priest's chamber of the confession booth, or poking holes into walls to ogle at naked women changing clothes in the change rooms. On a summer day in 1967, their lives take a sharp turn when they almost kill a man after pulling a prank on a hot dog vendor. They accidentally roll the cart down a set of subway stairs, severely injuring an elderly man. As punishment, they are all sentenced to serve time at the Wilkinson Home for Boys in Upstate New York. Shakes is given six-to-twelve months, while the others are given 12-to-18 months. The juvenile center is full of hard-core offenders, with no method for rehabilitation. There, the boys are systematically beaten, abused, and sexually assaulted by guards Sean Nokes (Kevin Bacon), Henry Addison (Jeffrey Donovan), Adam Styler (Lennie Loftin), and Ralph Ferguson (Terry Kinney). These traumatic events change the boys and their friendship forever. Father Bobby visited the boys regularly, but Nokes warned them not to say anything else the reprisals would be severe. Father Bobby gives Shakes the strength to keep going. Mr. Carlson (John Slattery) is the English teacher at the facility and appreciates the interest that Shakes shows in the subject. Guard Marlboro (James Pickens Jr.) is the only one who tries to protect the boys a little bit from the brutality of the predators. When at the facility, the boys participate in Wilkinson's annual football game between the guards and inmates. Michael convinces inmate Rizzo Robinson (Eugene Byrd) to help win the game. Humiliated, the guards move the boys to solitary confinement for weeks, where they are systematically beaten. Rizzo does not survive, and his family is told he had died of pneumonia. In spring 1968, shortly before Shakes's release from Wilkinson, he suggests the boys publicly report the abuse. The others refuse, with Michael asserting that no one would believe them or care, and they vow to never speak of it again. The night before Shakes is released, Nokes and the other guards arrange a "farewell party", in which the four boys are brutally sexually assaulted worse than they have been before. Fourteen years later in 1981, John and Tommy, now gangsters, find Sean Nokes in a Hell's Kitchen pub. When John and Tommy confront him, he dismisses the abuse he put them through. They both shoot him dead in front of several witnesses. Mike, now an assistant District Attorney, arranges to be assigned to the case, secretly intending to botch the prosecution to use it as a means of getting revenge. Moreover, he and Shakes begin forging a plan to get their revenge on all the guards who abused them. Together with many of their lifelong friends, especially Carol (Minnie Driver), a social worker, and King Benny, they manage to carry out their revenge using information on all the Wilkinson guards compiled by Mike previously. Benny spreads the word not to touch Mike and forbids any hits on Mike for taking the case against John and Tommy. Mike says that all Juvenile records are destroyed after 7 years, so there is no link between them and the guards anymore. They hire Danny Snyder (Dustin Hoffman), a washed-up, alcoholic lawyer, to defend John and Tommy to make it seem as if the case is hopeless, allowing them to carry out their plan without being watched. Benny gets involved and 2 of the 4 witnessed change their minds about testifying against John and Tommy. Mike provides all the research to Danny to prove that one of the witnesses who testifies to have seen both John and Tommy walk out of the pub, was drunk at the time of the shooting. However, to clinch the case they need a key witness who can give John and Tommy an alibi. Shakes has a long talk with Father Bobby and tells him about the abuse they suffered at Wilkinson. Mike calls Ralph Ferguson as a character witness in court. Again, Danny has been provided a detailed list of questions to expose Ferguson and Nokes as serial abusers of kids at the juvenile facility. Ferguson breaks down under the strain of the questions and his oath and admits to all accusations against him and Nokes. After a few days of soul-searching, Father Bobby agrees to lie on the stand about where John and Tommy were on the night of the shooting; the priest swears under oath that they were with him at Madison Square Garden at a New York Knicks basketball game. As a result, they are acquitted. The remaining guards are also punished for their crimes: one, Henry Addison, is killed by the drug gang run by the older brother of Rizzo (who was informed by Benny about Addison's crimes against Rizzo), a boy killed years before in the Wilkinson Home; the other, Adam Styler, a corrupt policeman accused of extorting and killing a drug dealer, is exposed, and arrested. Mike and Shakes had provided all the evidence against Adam to a detective, who was Benny's cousin. After the case is over, Mike quits his job as an attorney and moves to the English countryside where he becomes a carpenter; John drinks himself to death and Tommy is eventually murdered, both within a few years of the acquittal.
