Detroit 1995, Jimmy is an aspiring rap artist, trying to make a music career for himself. Although encouraged by his friends, Jimmy worries about his potential as a rapper. One night, Jimmy 'chokes' during a rap battle at a local venue (with a stage name of B-Rabbit), the Shelter, and he leaves the stage humiliated. Jimmy becomes speechless when the African American rappers (from the group called "Leaders of the Free World") attack his white trash background, and term him as privileged and out of touch with reality. Jimmy's friends include Future, Cheddar Bob, Sol George (Omar Benson Miller) and Iz (De'Angelo Wilson). Jimmy Smith (Eminem), a young and unhappy blue-collar worker from a poor family, struggling with different aspects of his life. He has moved back north of 8 Mile Road to the rundown trailer home in Warren, Michigan of his alcoholic mother, Stephanie (Kim Basinger), his sister Lily (Chloe Greenfield), and Stephanie's abusive live-in boyfriend Greg (Michael Shannon). Jimmy has to move in with Stephanie as he has been fired from the pizza place for being late too often. He needs a place to stay till he can get a job and make rent. Jimmy is focused on getting his music career started, but he seems unable to catch a break. Just recently, he ends a relationship with his girlfriend, Janeane (Taryn Manning) (Jimmy left her his car as she claimed that she is pregnant) and begins a new relationship with Alex (Brittany Murphy), whom he meets at the factory when she shows up one day looking for her brother. Jimmy comes to realize that his life has remained largely the same since he graduated high school (Greg used to be classmates with Jimmy and Future at school). At first, Jimmy considers himself a victim of his circumstances and blames others for his problems. Over time, though, Jimmy begins to take more responsibility for the direction of his life. Stephanie discovers an eviction notice as Jimmy is getting ready for work. Stephanie wants to hide the notice from Greg as he is supposed to get a fat settlement check from an accident, and Stephanie hopes that she and Lily can move into a new house with that money. She doesn't want to freak out Greg and wants Jimmy to help with the money. Jimmy appears to decide to take his day job more seriously, and this becomes evident to his supervisor at the factory. Initially, when Jimmy requests extra shifts, his supervisor Manny laughs at him (because of his tendency to be late to work), but by the end, Jimmy's improved attitude and performance earns him the extra work he had originally asked for. Jimmy is friends with Wink, who has ties to a record label promoter. Wink has promised Jimmy that he will take Jimmy along for a record deal with the promoter. Jimmy's friend Future does not trust Wink and considers him to be a negative influence. Through Jimmy, Wink meets Alex. Jimmy relationship with Wink becomes strained after he discovers that Wink does promotional work for Jimmy's rivals, a rap group known as "Leaders of the Free World". Papa Doc is the leader of this group and he particularly dislikes Jimmy. He even pulls a gun on Jimmy during one of their confrontations but is pulled back by his entourage. At one point, Jimmy and his friends get into a violent brawl with the Free World crew (When Jimmy watches Wink with Papa Doc, having a meeting), which is disrupted when Jimmy's friend, Cheddar Bob (Evan Jones), threatens them with a gun and accidentally shoots himself in the leg; he survives after being rushed to the hospital. During a lunch break at work, one of Jimmy's co-workers performs a freestyle rap insulting his co-worker, Paul, insinuating Paul is gay. Jimmy raps a freestyle defending Paul, which improves his confidence after a positive reception. Alex arrives and is impressed by Jimmy's talent, and they have sex. Despite her best attempts to keep the eviction notice a secret, Greg discovers it and confronts Stephanie. When Jimmy punches Greg for pushing his mother to the ground, they fight, ending in Greg leaving Stephanie for good. Jimmy's relationship with Alex ends when Jimmy walks in on his friend Wink (Eugene Byrd) having sex with her. Jimmy beats up Wink, which later causes Wink to officially join forces with Jimmy's enemies, the Leaders of the Free World. Later, Wink and the Free World gang jump Jimmy outside of his mother's trailer, but when one member pulls a gun on Jimmy, Wink stops him, and they leave. After the group has left Jimmy alone, his mother arrives with enough money to pay to avoid eviction, having won $3,200 at a bingo tournament. As Jimmy finds Stephanie lying on the porch, they have an argument, prompting Stephanie to kick Jimmy out of the house. Jimmy's friends hail him as an incredible rapper, and his friend Future (Mekhi Phifer) puts pressure on Jimmy to get his revenge by competing against the Leaders of the Free World at the next rap battle. However, Jimmy's late-night shift conflicts with the next battle tournament. A visit from Alex changes his mind about competing. Paul (Craig Chandler), a gay co-worker who Jimmy stood up for earlier, agrees to cover for him and he participates in the battle. The battle acts as kind of a "final conflict" with the Leaders of the Free World gang who have harassed Jimmy. It has three rounds, and in each of them Jimmy faces a member of the gang. Jimmy wins both of the first two rounds with progressively more impressive freestyle raps. In the last round, he is paired against Papa Doc (Anthony Mackie), the tournament's most feared battler. Jimmy is aware that Doc knows all his weak points, so he decides to address them preemptively with his freestyle. Jimmy acknowledges without shame his lower-class white trash roots and the various humiliations the Free World gang have inflicted on him, and then uses the difficult life he has had as a springboard to reveal the truth about Papa Doc: Doc, whose real name is Clarence, despite passing himself off as a thug, has a privileged background, having attended Cranbrook, a private high school, and growing up in a stable two-parent household. With nothing to say in rebuttal, Papa Doc hands the microphone back to Future and Jimmy wins the battle. As Jimmy leaves the venue, Future suggests that he stay and celebrate his victory while also offering a position that would allow him to host battles at The Shelter. Jimmy turns him down, claiming he has to get back to work and to find success his own way. He then starts walking back to work, feeling more confident about his future.

Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey) is a particularly career-focused lawyer and divorced father. He has a habit of giving precedence to his job, breaking promises to be with his young son Max (Justin Cooper), and then lying to both Max and his ex-wife Audrey (Maura Tierney) about the real reason he missed the get-together. Due to this Max believes that Fletcher is a liar. Audrey is dating hospital administrator Jerry, who is moving to Boston is a few weeks for his new job. Jerry proposes to Audrey and wants her and Max to move with him. Audrey refuses as she knows that Max is really connected to Fletcher. On Max's Day with him, Fletcher takes Max to his office, and Max sees firsthand how Fletcher lies to everybody to their face. He even agrees to take a on a new client, recommended by senior partner Miranda, where he knows that he would have to lie to win. Fletcher is aiming to be partner in the firm and is desperate to keep everybody happy. Due to the new case, Fletcher reneges on taking Max out for a wrestling match that he had promised him. Fletcher has to work really late into the night, preparing case notes, and has no time for Max. It was Greta who bought the present for Max's upcoming birthday, which Fletcher hands over Max at midnight of Max's Birthday. The next day Fletcher meets his new client Samantha Cole in Miranda's office and convinces her that she is the victim, even though she cheated on her husband with 7 different men. Miranda is impressed with Fletcher and promises to make him partner if he wins the case, and then proceeds to have sex with him in her office. Fletcher lets Max down once too often, missing his birthday party, and has to deal with the consequences of a wish Max makes while blowing out the candles on his cake. Max wishes, "I wish that for just one day, Dad can't tell a lie." Immediately, that wish actually and magically comes true. Fletcher soon has several embarrassing instances where he blurts out exactly what he is thinking, like a Tourette's Syndrome twitch, and figures out that he is unable to lie or even withhold a true answer. Some of these instances include: Immediately after Max makes his wish; Fletcher has just had sex with his law office colleague Miranda (Amanda Donohoe) and when she asks, "was it good for you?" "I've had better," he responds. The next morning, when an attractive girl says everyone is so nice to her, he says "Well, that's because you have big jugs! I mean... your breasts are huge! I mean... I want to squeeze them'!" Also, when he walks out of the elevator at his office and everyone is plugging their nose, he admits "It was me!". When an obese man asks, "What's up," he says, "Your cholesterol! Dead man walking'!" He also tells a co-worker he doesn't know his name because he's not important enough. When he tries to explain his situation to his secretary Greta (Anne Haney), she doesn't believe him, so he sets himself up good. He tells her to ask him something she thinks he would normally lie about. She asks him about a raise she wanted a couple months ago. Fletcher had told her if he gave her a raise it would make the other secretaries jealous. She asks if that was true or if he just didn't want to "pony up the dough". His secretary immediately quits and threatens to sue him. Fletcher's newest client is Samantha Cole (Jennifer Tilly), a gold digger who wants a net sum from her soon-to-be ex-husband, Richard Cole (Eric Pierpoint). The period of Max's wish is also when Fletcher has to defend Samantha in court. Fletcher asks for a continuance but is denied as he has no good reason. Fletcher learns that Samantha already has an offer to settle for $2.4 Million from her husband Richard, which she has refused. The judge keeps the hearing at 1:30 PM the same day. Due to this, Fletcher cannot go to school to pick, like he had promised Audrey and tells her so. Audrey is angry with Fletcher and tells him that she is moving to Boston with Jerry (Cary Elwes). Fletcher rushes home to talk to Audrey, but he is caught speeding. He gets his car impounded when he confesses all of his traffic infractions and unpaid tickets to a policeman. Fletcher reaches home and tries to make Audrey stay in town so he can be close to Max. Fletcher gets Audrey's help to get his car released and Audrey has to pay $1654.11 for the same. Fletcher promises to come by and play ball with Max after his court hearing. It is here that Fletcher learns about Max's birthday wish and now realizes that he cannot tell a lie for 24 hours which will mean that the magical ability (or curse) will expire on the 24th hour when Max made the wish at his birthday party; at 8:15 pm. Fletcher goes to Max's school and wants him to take back his wish. Max says that he doesn't want Fletcher to lie as his lies make Max feel bad. At the court hearing, the main witness, Kenneth Falk (Chip Mayer), with whom Samantha has been cheating on Richard, is eager to lie in court to win, but Fletcher cannot even ask him a question, when he knows that the answer will be a lie. Fletcher tries desperately to delay the case, even beating himself up in the bathroom, but is unable to lie his way into a continuance. Knowing that he cannot deny the proof of Samantha's adultery, he successfully disputes the validity of her prenuptial agreement after overhearing her reveal her actual age, discovering that she signed it as a minor without parental consent (Samantha was 17 at the time of her wedding). This entitles Samantha to 50% of Richard's marital assets, allowing Fletcher to win the case truthfully. However, Samantha also insists on contesting custody of their children for an extra $10,000 in monthly child support payments. A disheartened Fletcher, realizing that he corrupted Samantha with his lies, watches as she pulls her crying children out of Richard's arms. Horrified, Fletcher demands that the decision be reversed, but the judge holds him in contempt. When telephoning Audrey to bail him out, she refuses and decides to leave with Jerry as this was yet another broken promise from Flecther to Max. Greta learns of this and, having realized that Fletcher turned over a new leaf, pays his bail. Recognizing Max as his highest priority, Fletcher rushes to the airport, but Audrey and Max's plane has already left the gate. In desperation, he hijacks a mobile stairway to pursue the plane onto the runway. After throwing one of his shoes at the plane's windshield, he is able to get the plane to stop, but is injured after he crashes the mobile stairway and gets thrown off. On a stretcher, Fletcher vows to Max that he will spend more time with him. He says that despite the fact he is free to lie now that the 24 hours have elapsed, it feels better to be honest. Max believes him, and Audrey, encouraged by Jerry, decides to remain in California. One year later, Fletcher and Audrey are celebrating Max's birthday. Max makes a birthday wish, only to find that Fletcher and Audrey are kissing when the lights come back on. Fletcher asks Max if he wished for them to get back together, but Max says he only wished for roller-blades. The family returns to normal as Fletcher chases Audrey and Max around the house with "the Claw", a game that Fletcher often plays with Max.

Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko (Steve Martin) is in charge of the motor pool at Fort Baxter, a small United States Army base that develops new military technology. Exploiting this position, he directs a number of scams, ranging from gambling (Somebody said they are as strong as a horse and Bilko organized a betting game to actually test it in a tug of war against the horse. Bilko gets his man to lose the first match, only to up the stakes and then his man taking down the horse to win big) to renting out military vehicles. He plans to open up a day care center on base to get access to the kids allowances. Sgt. Henshaw (John Marshall Jones) & Sgt. Raquel Barbella (Pamela Adlon), work with Bilko on his scams. Spc. Dino Paparelli (Max Casella) runs the casino. Spc. Luis Clemente (John Ortiz) is the IT guy. Spc. Tony Morales (Dan Ferro) runs the bar. Pfc. Mickey Zimmerman (Mitchell Whitfield) is the man without any personality. Newly assigned Private First Class Wally Holbrook (Daryl Mitchell) is disgusted with this blatant violation of army protocol. Bilko wants Holbrook to roll back the odometer to the General's car, as he has been renting it out. His commanding officer, Colonel John Hall (Dan Aykroyd), overlooks Bilko's money-making schemes, as he is more concerned with problems in the "Hover Tank" that the base is designing. The army is closing a lot of facilities lately and if the Hover Tank fails, Fort Baxter might also get on the list. Maj. Ebersole (Austin Pendleton) is in charge of the Hover Tank development and he himself is not confident of its performance under battle conditions. Major Colin Thorn (Phil Hartman), an officer from the U.S. Army Inspector General's office, arrives at the camp and begins to scrutinize Bilko's record. Officially, Thorn is at Fort Baxter to conduct a general inspection of the Hover Tank program and determine if the base should remain open in light of recent defense cutbacks. He is also determined to get revenge on Bilko to settle an old score the two have from Fort Dix, where Thorn was nearly court-martialed after a fixed boxing match (Bilko had fixed the fight. He made a deal with one of the fighters to take a dive for 50% of the winnings. But later, one of his men make a mistake and pay the other fighter, who thinks it's a good amount of money and decides to take a dive. Hence both fighters in the ring take a dive (for 3 rounds none of them landed a single punch) without so much as being touched by each other) (Thorn went into the fighter's locker and found the money, but was found by military police, who think Thorn was paying off the fighter to take the dive) which resulted in Thorn being shipped off to Greenland in the belief that he tried to fix the fight. Every time the hover tank fires, it rolls back uncontrollably due to Newton's third law of motion. Thorn is determined to shut the base down. When Thorn finds out that Bilko is on the base, that's just the icing on the cake. Thorn organizes surprise 90 second inspections of Bilko's barracks, forcing him to switch barracks (since his own is a total mess) to pass the inspection. The men have to explain a lot of things like black family photographs in the room of a white man, ladies' undergarments in men's room and so on. One of Bilko's men is 50 pounds overweight, and Thorn wants him under in 6 weeks. Bitter and unprincipled, Thorn is not above breaking the law to ruin Bilko. He attempts to steal Bilko's long-time fiance Rita (Glenne Headly), whom Bilko has stood up at the altar more than a dozen times (they play cards every time they meet afterwards). Rita is tired of waiting and gives Bilko 30 days to win her back or lose her for good. Thorn starts dating Rita and even proposes to her. Thorn calls 1st Lt. Oster (Chris Rock) & 1st Lt. Monday (Cathy Silvers) from the Inspector General's office to audit the motor pool accounts. Hall asks Bilko to do whatever to make it do away. Bilko plays every trick in the book, double counting the inventory, suggesting that Monday has a thing for Oster to distract him. They find nothing. Bilko is nice at heart and helps Holbrook get a date with a pretty lady he meets at the bar (by getting rid of her date). Thorn is still on Bilko's ass and wants to inspect his company at 0500 the next day. The platoon is on the verge of riots, and Bilko organizes to get them to take part in desert maneuvers, which incidentally are just 50 miles outside of Vegas. But, unknown to Bilko, Thorn had permitted this, so he could get his auditors inside Bilko's computers to find dirt on him. After Monday breaks into Bilko's computers, Thorn sends them off, and then proceeds to make a fake file on diversion of funds and parts from the Hover Tank project. Thorn presents the report to Hall. Thorn wants Hall to transfer Bilko to Greenland. Bilko gets his orders, and his platoon sees him crying. Bilko, with the help of newly assigned Private First Class Wally Holbrook (Daryl Mitchell), devises a means of avoiding Thorn's attempt to transfer him to Greenland (he proposes to stage a successful demo of the hover tank to prove that Bilko has not been diverting money from it): He rigs a demonstration of the base's malfunctioning Hover Tank (Bilko tells Hall that the base is being closed unless the tank test is a success), staged before a four-star general and numerous dignitaries. Since Thorn had deliberately tried to sabotage the tank the previous night, he confronts Bilko, Hall, and the general, loudly insulting Bilko and Hall. While ranting, he confesses to sabotaging the Hover Tank (Bilko had sent word via his men in a bar, to Thorn that the Hover Tank is working and Thorn came to the shed at night to remove the control circuits, and Bilko was there taking photos). Thorn is sent off again to Greenland. The last day of Rita's ultimatum has come. Just as she sadly begins to write Bilko off forever, Rita hears men outside her house, serenading her with a favorite song of hers and Bilko's. Looking out, she sees Bilko and his platoon. Bilko asks Rita to marry him, and she accepts. The next day is their wedding day, but Rita shows up late, due to a mix-up over Daylight Saving Time. After they play another card game, they finally get married. Unknown to Bilko, Rita is holding four aces in her hand.

Apollo 13 tells the story of the 1970`s ill-fated moon voyage. When a fuel leak threatens three astronauts, the ground crew and mission team must struggle to avert catastrophe.

Newton Davis (Steve Martin) is a struggling architect. Marty (Peter MacNicol) is Newton's friend at work. Newton is not able to progress at work as he is not social at work and is not able to articulate his ideas well to his boss, Moseby. He calls the firm's work repetitive and "cookie cutter". Newton corrects all of Marty's work, but Marty knows how to kiss ass, and climbs up the corporate ladder. After building his dream house for himself and his longtime girlfriend Becky (Dana Delany) in his hometown, he is crushed when she refuses to marry him. He is unable to bring himself to live in the house, and leaves it abandoned and with a debt he cannot afford. Three months later, Newton meets a waitress named Gwen (Goldie Hawn) at a Hungarian restaurant in Boston. Believing that she cannot speak English, he spills out his sob story about Becky and the abandoned house. After the restaurant closes for the night, Newton learns she merely pretended to be Hungarian, and can speak English. He walks her home, which turns out to be a small apartment upstairs at the restaurant. They end up having sex. The next morning, Gwen finds that Newton left in the middle of the night. However, he unintentionally left behind the drawing of the house he'd built for Becky. Interest piqued by the drawing; Gwen takes a bus ride out to see the house. She is charmed by it, and decides to move in. Gwen goes to the town's general store, where she charges her groceries to the "Newton Davis" account. When questioned about this, Gwen, who it becomes clear is a natural liar, says that she is Newton's wife. Gwen meets Becky (who was shopping at the same grocery store) and spins a lengthy romantic story about how they fell in love, which surprises and impresses Becky (Gwen says Newton was promoted at work as well and now has no debt). Gwen also meets Newton's parents (George Davis (Donald Moffat) & Edna Davis (Julie Harris)) (she was walking back home and ran into George at his garage sale), who are heartbroken that Newton got "married" without telling them, but Gwen manages to smooth things over with them with her charm. Edna gives Gwen a wedding gift (a check) to get her started, and then helps her with all the shopping. Soon after, Newton travels to his hometown and is shocked to see that his house is lived in. When he finds out what Gwen has done, he is initially furious, but he soon sees the potential in her being there. Gwen starts creating all sorts of opportunities for Newton: mending his relationship with his parents (George had a falling out with Newton), helping out with his career by befriending Newton's boss Winston Moseby (Roy Cooper) and highlighting his long-ignored talent, and making Becky jealous (Becky tells Newton that she didn't want to marry a dreamer, but listening to Gwen she can see the potential for great things in him). Newton starts a rumor that Gwen slept with an older lover of hers and that's why their marriage is on the rocks. The parents want Newton to consider marriage counseling with Reverend Lipton (Christopher Durang). Newton and Gwen come to an agreement in which Gwen will help Newton win Becky, and in return she'll get all the furniture in the house. They stage a fight in front of Becky where Gwen reveals that Newton still has feelings for Becky. Through their time together, Newton begins to rely more on Gwen beyond their agreement (Gwen meets Moseby at Newton's office and friends him up and invites him to their reception (with George and Edna insisted that Newton and Gwen should have)), and Gwen starts to feel attached to her life with Newton. Meanwhile, Newton manages to seduce Becky and is about to have sex with her, but she backs out as she doesn't want to be the other woman. In the city Newton runs into one of Gwen's waitress friend Patty, and she reveals that Gwen became a compulsive liar in order to escape from what she feels is her own inadequate background, and that she has "changed" her life numerous times. Gwen told many lies to Newton to gain his sympathy. Gwen says that she wanted to see how it would be to live in Newton's picture. The film culminates with a reception held at the house in which the sub-plots of Newton's career, family and affections for Becky are brought together. Gwen hires 2 homeless bums Ralph and Mary (who used to live in front of her apartment) as her parents Bernie (Richard B. Shull) and Mary (Laurel Cronin). Newton demos his house and his original ideas to Moseby. Annoyed with Becky for her superior and suspicious attitude, Gwen confronts her in front of everyone, accusing her of trying to win Newton back. Gwen storms out of the house in tears, and Newton follows her, thinking it is still part of the plan. Outside alone, Newton praises Gwen for her brilliance, but Gwen replies that she wanted their marriage to work. Her feelings for him are apparent. Newton's boss gives him the promotion. Newton watches, confused, as Gwen leaves. Becky takes the opportunity to make a move on Newton and asks whether all of Gwen's elaborate stories were real. Newton answers that they were all true and chases after Gwen. Newton stops Gwen as she is about to board a bus to leave town. Although she resists, Newton follows her example and begins telling an outlandish romantic story of something they "did", which makes Gwen decide to stay. The film ends on the note of Newton and Gwen being happily married and living together in the house. As Newton and Gwen go into the house together, the final spoken words are of Newton saying, "I love you, Gwen" and Gwen replying, "Actually, it's Jessica."
