As the world's greatest criminal mastermind (Timothy Olyphant) attempts to cripple the entire country with an innovative act of technological terrorism, only one cop can insure that the integrity of the system stays intact.

Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis) is an alcoholic and burned-out NYPD detective. Mosley is typically given assignments that nobody else in the department wants to do. After working all night, his lieutenant Kincaid orders him to escort Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) to testify in front of a grand jury before 10 a.m. Eddie has to be taken from jail to the courthouse, 16 Blocks away to testify on a police corruption case. Bunker tries to be friendly with Mosley, telling him of his aspirations to move to Seattle and open a bakery with his sister who he has never met, but Mosley is uninterested and insists on stopping at a liquor store. Jack stops at a liquor store on the way; a gunman (Danny Lima) ambushes the car with Eddie inside. Jack kills the gunman and runs over the gunman's partner (Nick Alachiotis). They go to Jack's regular bar, and he kicks everybody out. His call for backup brings Jack's ex-partner, Frank Nugent (David Morse), and several other cops. The officers include Captain Dan Gruber (Casey Sander), Detective Jimmy Mulvey (Cylk Cozart), Detective Bobby Torres (David Zayas), Detective Jerry Shue (Robert Racki), Detective Touhey (Patrick Garrow), Detective Kaller (Sasha Roiz), Detective Ortiz (Conrad Pla), Detective Edward Maldonado (Hechter Ubarry), Deputy Commissioner Wagner (Richard Fitzpatrick), Sergeant Cannova (Robert Clohessy), Lieutenant Kincaid (Scott McCord) and others. Frank arrives at the bar and wants Mosley to go home, promising him that he will "take care" of Eddie. Mosley senses something is off and decides to stay put. Frank explains that Eddie is about to testify against Jerry, who will testify against the other cops to save himself. Nugent admits that he is one of the officers named in the corruption case, and that out of loyalty, Mosley should let him kill him. Frank takes Jack's gun and gives it to Eddie. Forced, Eddie fires the gun but before his execution Jack uses the bar's shotgun and cripples the cop who was about to shoot Eddie. Jack and Eddie run out the back door. It is 8:25 AM. If Eddie is even 1 minute late, his testimony will not matter. Eddie tells Mosley that he saw Jerry threaten a witness and put a gun in his mouth, while threatening his mother that her boy will be killed if he testifies. Jack retrieves his spare handgun from his sister Dianne's (Jenna Stern) apartment and disables one of the cops searching for him. Jack learns that the police have already approached her about his activities earlier that day Continuing the escort Frank's men chase Jack and Eddie; they escape behind a barricaded steel door but find Frank waiting. Trapped, they try to flee using a broken elevator. Jack and Frank trade shots while discussing old memories. Frank tries to convince Jack it is not worth protecting Eddie. At the last second the elevator starts to work; Jack and Eddie ride it up and leave out the front door. Jack and Eddie enter an apartment building. Eddie knocks on random doors, finally an old Asian man lets them in. Frank's team searches the building floor to floor. In the apartment, Eddie changes clothes and describes his dream of opening a bakery. Jack calls the Assistant District Attorney MacDonald (Brenda Pressley) and tells her the address and room number (but purposefully gives the wrong apartment number); she sends more cops. Frank receives Jack's location from a mole but as his men break in, they realize it is the wrong apartment. Jack walks down the stairs but finds Frank waiting. Jack had Eddie take a different route and Eddie can sneak up behind Frank and hold him at gunpoint. They steal a bus with passengers; ESU shoots the tires immobilizing the bus and creating a hostage situation. Mosley is forced to treat the passengers as hostages. The bus crashes into a construction site and is soon surrounded by the ESU. Jack forces the passengers to cover the windows with newspaper. Before ESU storms the bus Jack releases all the passengers while Eddie sneaks off in the confusion. Jack remains on the bus, but the cops still believe that there are eight more hostages; the bus driver admits he was the last passenger. Mosley finds a tape recorder while going through the passenger's luggage and prepares a farewell message to Diane. To his surprise, Bunker returns to the bus; Nugent lines up a shot but is ordered to stand down. Bunker has come to see Mosley as an ally and wants to be there for him to see this through. Bunker's tenacity convinces Mosley to keep fighting, and he manages to drive the bus into an alley, temporarily blocking the police from following them. He finds that Bunker has been wounded, and calls Diane, a paramedic, for help. Diane treats Bunker and arranges for a second ambulance to take them to the hospital. Bunker learns that Mosley is also due to be named in the investigation but is willing to testify in his place. Mosley gets off a block from the courthouse and wishes Bunker luck with his bakery, instructing the paramedic to take Bunker to the Port Authority and put him on a bus for Seattle. Bunker promises to send him a cake on his birthday. Mosley continues to the courthouse, where the police and ESU are waiting for him as well as the district attorney. Entering through the underground garage, he again refuses Nugent's pleas not to testify. Nugent then orders one of his men to gun down Mosley as he enters, but an ESU sniper intercepts and kills the shooter. Mosley informs the district attorney that he will testify in exchange for Bunker having his record expunged, also revealing that he had recorded the conversation with Nugent in the garage on the tape recorder, which he submits as evidence. Two years later, Mosley is freed from prison. He celebrates his birthday with Diane and other friends and is surprised to find that the cake had indeed come from Bunker, who has been successful in starting "Eddie & Jack's Good Sign Bakery" in Seattle.

James Cole (Bruce Willis) is a convicted criminal living in a grim post-apocalyptic future. In 1996-97, the Earth's surface was contaminated by a virus so deadly that it forced the surviving population to live underground. In 2035, James Cole is a prisoner living in an underground compound beneath Philadelphia. Cole is sent to the surface periodically to collect biological samples to ascertain the condition of the planet. To earn a pardon, Cole allows scientists to send him on dangerous missions to the past to collect information on the virus, thought to be released by a terrorist organization known as the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. If possible, he is to obtain a pure sample of the original virus so a cure can be made. Cole is troubled with recurring dreams involving a chase and a shooting in an airport. On Cole's first trip, he arrives in Baltimore in 1990, not 1996 as planned. He is arrested for creating a public nuisance and doesn't have any ID on him. Cole is hospitalized in a mental institution on the diagnosis of Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madelline Stowe). Cole claims that he lives underground and says that he is supposed to be in 1996, which is the "past" for him. There, he encounters Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), a fellow mental patient with fanatical animal rights and anti-consumerist leanings. Cole is interviewed by a panel of doctors and tries to explain that the virus outbreak has already happened and cannot be prevented. He says that the virus will be released by the Army of the 12 Monkeys in 1996, and by 1997 only 1% of the human population would survive. He says that he was sent to the wrong time and begs to make one telephone call to sort this all out. Cole tries unsuccessfully to leave a voicemail on a number monitored by the scientists in the future. But the number was not being monitored in 1990. After a failed escape attempt, Cole is restrained and locked in a cell, but then disappears, returning to the future. Back in his own time, Cole is interviewed by the scientists, who play a distorted voice mail message which gives the location of the Army of the Twelve Monkeys and states that they are responsible for the virus. Cole says that he did not leave the voicemail as he was in the wrong year. He is also shown photos of numerous people suspected of being involved with the virus, including Goines. The scientists offer Cole another chance to complete his mission and send him back in time. Cole briefly arrives at a battlefield during World War I, where he sees another prison inmate who was sent back in time, José. Cole is shot in the leg and gets transported to 1996. In 1996, Railly gives a lecture about the Cassandra complex (a psychological phenomenon that describes when someone's accurate predictions of a crisis are ignored or dismissed. The term comes from the Greek mythological figure Cassandra, who was given the gift of prophecy by Apollo but was cursed so that no one would believe her) to a group of scientists. At the post-lecture book-signing, Railly meets Dr. Peters, who tells her that apocalypse alarmists represent the sane vision while humanity's gradual destruction of the environment is the real lunacy. Cole arrives at the venue after seeing fliers publicizing it. Cole kidnaps Railly and sets out in search of Goines, learning that he is the founder of the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. When Cole confronts Goines, he denies any involvement with the group and says that in 1990, Cole originated the idea of wiping out humanity with a virus stolen from Goines' virologist father, Dr. Leland Goines. Cole is transported back to 2035, where he reaffirms to the scientists his commitment to his mission and asks to be sent back to complete it. After Cole disappears, Railly begins to doubt her diagnosis of Cole when she finds evidence that he is telling the truth, including a photograph from World War I in which Cole appears. Cole, on the other hand, convinces himself that his future experiences are hallucinations, and persuades the scientists to send him back again. Railly attempts to settle the question of Cole's sanity by leaving a voice mail on the number he provided, creating the message the scientists played prior to his second mission. They both now realize that the coming plague is real and make plans to enjoy the time they have left. They decide to depart for the Florida Keys before the start of the plague. Cole and Railly learn that the Army of the 12 Monkeys was not the source of the epidemic; the group's major act of protest is releasing animals from a zoo and placing Goines' father in an animal cage. At the airport, Cole leaves a last message telling the scientists they are on the wrong track following the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, and that he will not return. He is soon confronted by Jose (Jon Seda), an acquaintance from his own time, who gives Cole a handgun and instructions to complete his mission. Railly spots Dr. Peters (David Morse) at the airport and recognizes him from a newspaper as an assistant of Goines' father. Peters is about to embark on a tour of several cities that matches the viral outbreaks chronologically and geographically. Cole, while fighting through security, is fatally shot as he tries to stop Peters. As Cole dies in Railly's arms, she makes eye contact with a small boy - the young James Cole witnessing his own death; the scene that will replay in his dreams for years to come. Peters, aboard the plane with the virus, sits down next to Jones (Carol Florence), one of the scientists from the future, who comments that her job is "insurance". The young Cole watches a plane take off from the ground outside the airport.

A massive bomb explodes in the Bonwit Teller department store, causing several vehicles to flip, and causing NYPD into a frenzy, trying to sort out what's going on. At the station, Inspector Walter Cobb (Larry Bryggman) of the NYPD's major case unit gets a call from a man who calls himself Simon (Jeremy Irons). Simon asks for Lieutenant John McClane (Bruce Willis). Making demands in the form of a 'Simon Says' game, he threatens to detonate another bomb unless Lt. John McClane is sent to the corner of 138th Street and Amsterdam in Harlem wearing an intentionally provocative sandwich board. McClane was on suspension and Walter goes himself to fetch McClane who is still groggy due to the effects of alcohol and presumably drugs. Walter finds that there have been 3 killings in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn in the past two nights, and 14 dump trucks were stolen from a construction yard on Staten Island. Walter tells John that Simon has threatened to detonate another bomb if the police don't do what he says. John wants to know why he's been targeted by Simon, but no one knows why. John is dropped 10 blocks away from the location that Simon wanted him to be at, wearing a sandwich board with a racist message on it (as instructed by Simon). While John is in Harlem, he is confronted by an electrician and shop owner named Zeus Carver (Samuel L Jackson). McClane explains his situation before a group of gang members also confront McClane over his sign. Carver intervenes (takes the gun that was taped to the back of McClane) and saves McClane, and they escape in a taxi. They arrive at 1 Police Plaza, where a bomb expert Charlie (Kevin Chamberlin) brings in an abandoned suitcase from a playground, and describes that the bomb inside is very sophisticated. It is made of binary liquid, which is safe until it is mixed. Once the liquids mix, it explodes with huge force within a few minutes at most. The police have reports of raw materials being stolen which are enough to make 20,000 pounds of this stuff. Simon calls again and McClane gets into a verbal duel trading insults with him. Walter offers to demote McClane and remove him from the case, but Simon says that he would not give up McClane for "All the gold in your Fort Knox". Simon spoke German and stammered when McClane pushed him. Simon demands that the pair follow a timed challenge, or he will set off more bombs. They agree and reach a public phone. Simon instructs them that he has put a bomb on a train that will arrive at a subway station 90 blocks away in 30 minutes. McClane commandeers a taxi and drives through Central Park to get to the station on time. McClane eventually boards the 3-train heading towards the Wall Street station in order to defuse a bomb that Simon planted on it. Carver takes the taxi as a backup plan and drives to the station. Carver arrives at the station before McClane finds the bomb (inside the train concealed in the emergency phone system) and throws it on the tracks just as it explodes. McClane and Carver regroup with the NYPD and meet some FBI and CIA agents, who initially inform the pair that Simon is "Peter Krieg", a mercenary and former colonel in the National People's Army. They then reveal that Krieg's real name is Simon Peter Gruber, the brother of Hans Gruber, who McClane killed years earlier in Los Angeles. Simon calls that another bomb has been planted in one of New York's City schools, and that any police radio could set it off. Simon offers to give the authorities the school's location if McClane and Carver follow another timed challenge, warning that he will detonate the explosive if any evacuation attempts are carried out. While the pair solve Simon's next challenge, the NYPD begin to search all elementary schools in the city. McClane realizes that Simon is attempting to distract the NYPD away from Wall Street, which has no schools, and travels to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Building. McClane finds Simon's men have raided the Federal Reserve Bank through the ruined subway system (the bomb that went off at the Wall Street Subway station was for this purpose), making off with $140 billion of gold bullion from the vault, hauling it away in the stolen dump trucks. McClane attempts to follow the dump trucks through the aqueduct, but Simon destroys a cofferdam and floods the tunnel. They continue to follow the dump trucks to a tanker, and make a daring attempt to board it, but are quickly caught. Simon explains that his school threat was fake and broadcasts a message claiming that he is planning on destroying the tanker to destabilize the Western world's economy. After he leaves, Carver and McClane free themselves and escape the tanker just before the bomb detonates. At the same time that the police attempt to evacuate the school they think the bomb is in, McClane and Carver find that Simon has instead used the rest of the explosive to rig the tanker to explode, which would send the gold to the bottom of the sea. After Simon leaves, McClane and Carver escape the doomed tanker just before the bomb is detonated. As McClane and Carver are debriefed by the NYPD, McClane informs them that none of the bullion Simon's men stole was in the tanker's cargo hold (and replaced it with scrap metal), having deduced that Simon had intended to keep all of it for himself, using his knowledge of the Gruber family's ways of working. While attempting to place a call to his estranged wife Holly, McClane glances at a bottle of aspirin given to him by Simon on-board the tanker and notices that it was purchased at a truck stop in Quebec on the Canada-United States border. McClane informs the NYPD of his discovery and joins them and Carver as they rush towards a warehouse near the truck stop where Simon and his men are redistributing the bullion and planning their escape. The rest of Simon's men are quickly apprehended by law enforcement personnel, though Simon and his girlfriend Katya attempt to escape in a helicopter, attacking McClane. McClane shoots at an overhead power line which falls onto the helicopter, causing it to crash and explode, killing Simon and Katya (Sam Phillips). While they are celebrating their triumph, Carver persuades McClane to place another call to Holly.

John McClane must race against time to save hundreds of lives (including his wife's) when a group of terrorists take control of Washington Dulles Airport's systems, and threaten to crash several planes if their demands are not met. After the terrifying events in LA, John McClane (Willis) is about to go through it all again. A team of terrorists, led by Col. Stuart (Sadler) is holding the entire airport hostage. The terrorists are planning to rescue a drug lord from justice. In order to do so, they have seized control of all electrical equipment affecting all planes. With no runway lights available, all aircraft have to remain in the air, with fuel running low, McClane will need to be fast. —Film_Fan John McClane, the New York cop who took on single handed some men who took over the office building where his wife worked a year ago, is now at Dulles Airport waiting for his wife to arrive so they can spend Christmas with her family. But it turns out that a South American President who became a drug dealer after the US withdrew support, is arriving to be handed to American authorities. And McClane notices some men acting strangely so he follows them and they start shooting at him and he shoots back. McClane tries to talk to the Chief of the Airport police but the guy doesn't want to listen, so McClane gets the fingerprints of the man he killed and has his friend at the LAPD check it out. And he finds out that the man officially died two years ago. So McClane thinks the guy is part of a Black Op and tries to tell the Manager but before they could act on it, the Airport's system goes out. And that's when someone calls them and tells them that they've taken control of their system so they can't contact any of the planes who are arriving and give them landing instructions. And some of the planes have little fuel and among them is the one McClane's wife is on. The criminals wish to free a drug baron being extradited to America for trial by holding the airport to ransom until they all safely escape on another plane.
