The movie begins with a man (William) is standing on the ledge of a bridge trying to gain the courage to jump. A man appears behind him and startles him and offers help if William wants it. William tells him to back off, he doesn't need help, the stranger gives William a card as his attempts to help William jump appear to fail. William closes his eyes and jumps, but he crashes through the roof of a boat and lands in the middle of a party alive. William goes back to work as a life guard ( he wants to be a writer) and talks with his boss. Things don't go well, already frustrated about his future, William is dismissed from his job and then heads home. He comes upon a stack of mail inside his door, to his dismay, they are rejections from his submissions. He heads to the bathroom and looks for pills. He then turns on the gas oven and sticks his head in it. Once again, he has failed, the gas has been shut off due to an unpaid bill. William pulls out the card that the stranger on the bridge game him, it reads Leslie O'Neal Assassin , he calls the number. William meets the stranger from the bridge (Mr. O'Neal) in a coffee shop, William tells him he is not what he expected based on his age. Leslie ensures William that he is the angel of death and has killed many people. William explains the many way and times he has tried to kill himself all ending in failure. The last incident ending in being hit by an ambulance, William suggests that he may be immortal. Leslie gives William a book with options of ways people die to choose from. Because William only has 2 thousand dollars, Leslie suggests a bullet from a distance, instant death, they agree and sign a contract. O'Neal goes to his office to register his contract and also asks for a gun, he looks at the score board for hired killers and he is very low on the list, however he notices that one killer has overflowed the chart with his kills. He heads home to have dinner with his wife and they sit down to watch some tv. Meanwhile, William is at home writing his suicide note, satisfied, he kicks back with a smoke. Back at O'Neal's house he and his wife argue about bills and such. Later on William calls O'Neal to tell him the money has been transferred, but O'Neal is in the middle of a job, the call is short and Oneal goes about his business. William has an idea for a book about an assassin, namely his own hired help. O'Neal is shown doing his job around the city. Williams phone rings, it's a woman who wants to talk to him about his book. They set up a meeting for lunch, she tells him not to kill himself before then. Williams goes to see O'Neal to postpone their deal because of the meeting. Oneal reminds him that the have a contract and he must follow through on it. William meets up with Ellie who called him earlier about his book, a rude man on the phone berating someone sits down with them, he is the boss and takes over the conversation. He suggests what he wants to do to twist Williams story about trying to kill himself but he doesn't agree with the suggestions. O'Neal takes aim at William from a window, but as he shoots, William ducks and the rude boss is killed instead, O'Neal takes a second shot again missing William and hitting a waiter. O'Neal is back home with his wife telling her he had a bad day, she suggests that it could have been worse because someone could have been killed. William is at home writing when he hears a knock on the door, it's Ellie. She and William talk about what happened earlier during their meeting and where to go from here. Knowing that he has hired someone to kill him, William struggles but finally breaks and tells Ellie that the bullet was meant for him and not her boss. Ellie tells William that he needs to end the contract so he calls O'Neal. The phone that is ringing is in his apartment and he finds O'Neal in another room, they argue and William is almost killed. William and Ellie run down an alley and steal a parking cops scooter, O'Neal kills the cop, stuffs him in a trash can but is abducted by men putting a bag over his head, O'Neal is taken to his boss where he is told he fucked up, they can't have that as they are professionals. He goes on a rant about Micheal J Fox and then tells him that he is done, washed up, through, out of the game. He is told he has broken the rules because someone else had a contract on his accidental killing. O'Neal tries in vain to take credit for that contract, but is informed that he has been re-assigned. O'Neal is offered a clock as a parting gift but refuses to take it. His boss tells his henchmen that O'Neal has become loose end and should be shot. William and Ellie are at her house that her parents left her when they died in a car crash, she also says that she was dead for about 10 seconds. William comes back with his own story about how his parents were crushed by a piano and that as he looked at his dad hoping for some last words, he just died instead. Ellie suggests that they just kill themselves and get it over with rather than waiting for Williams hitman. They take two knives, Ellie counts to 3 but they drop the knives and start making out instead. O'Neal is back home in bed with his wife complaining about being let go / retired and says he isn't ready, His wife says to stick with his guts and stay in the game. William and Ellie chat about how he decided which way he wanted to be killed and bicker a bit about which way would have been the most interesting. O'Neal and his wife are going about their day, she leaves as he reads the paper, outside a henchman sits in a car. Once the wife is gone, he heads inside the house, O'Neal says goodbye to his birds and leaves. The Henchman finds pictures and such on the table but no sign of O'Neal. William and Ellie head to cliffs overlooking the ocean and then head through some woods. They arrive back at Ellies home only to find O'Neal ready to fulfill his contract. His phone keeps ringing as he attempts to shoot William, it's his wife calling about the house being broken into. The henchman has killed his birds and he is upset. As he goes to shoot William, the henchman shoots O'Neal. He then hands William a gun and tells him to shoot himself. Saying that they will both be considered suicide, Ellie and William explain that he needs the other gun to do it. William puts the gun in his mouth but they henchman is then pummeled to death by O'Neal who has survived the shot to the head. O'Neal tells William he needs to finish the job, Ellie picks up a gun a shoots off a round to let him know she is serious. William tells O'Neal that he had nothing to live for until he met Ellie, and now he doesn't want to die. Ellie comes up with a plan by taking out their own contract. After some time they take O'Neal's car to a bridge where they dump Ellie's boss into the river. O'Neal makes it home to his wife and finds that she has won a first place ribbon. Later on she answers the door, it is O'Neal's boss and he has the clock he had offered earlier. He asks his wife to leave so they can discuss business. O'Neal is told that one of his contracts are still alive, he pushes the contract that William and him had drawn up, guns are drawn under the table. Suddenly O'Neal's wife enters with her award winning pillow. She goes on and on about how some birds mate forever and with both guns still pointed at each other, they wonder what to do. O'Neal's wife picks up the clock and hands it to O'Neal, this means he has accepted retirement and then the boss leaves the house. William and Ellie are walking through a park, a ball is kicked into the street and William jumps out to push the child out of the way, William is hit and lays in the street as people clap for his heroics. Ellie comforts him as an ambulance arrives.

Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) is a Catholic mother who lives with her two small children in a remote country house in the British Crown Dependency of Jersey, in the immediate aftermath of World War II. The children, Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), have an uncommon disease, Xeroderma Pigmentosa, characterized by photo-sensitivity, so their lives are structured around a series of complex rules designed to protect them from inadvertent exposure to sunlight. The new arrival of three servants at the house - an aging nanny and servant named Mrs. Bertha Mills (Fionnula Flanagan), an elderly gardener named Mr. Edmund Tuttle (Eric Sykes), and a young mute girl named Lydia (Elaine Cassidy) - coincides with a number of odd events, and Grace begins to fear that they are not alone. Anne draws pictures of four people: a man, a woman, a boy called Victor, and an old woman, all of whom she says she has seen in the house. A piano is heard from inside a locked room when no one is inside. Grace finds and examines a "book of the dead," which shows mourning portraits taken in the 19th century of recently deceased corpses. Doors which Grace believes to have been closed are found mysteriously ajar. Grace tries hunting down the "intruders" with a shotgun but cannot find them. She scolds her daughter for believing in ghosts - until she hears them herself. Eventually, convincing herself that something unholy is in the house, she runs out in the fog to get the local priest to bless the house. Meanwhile, the servants, led by Mrs. Mills, are clearly up to something of their own. The gardener buries a headstone under autumn leaves, and Mrs. Mills listens faithfully to Anne's allegations against her mother. Outside, Grace loses herself in the heavy fog, but she miraculously discovers her husband Charles (Christopher Eccleston), who she thought had been killed in the war, and brings him back to the house. Charles is distant during the one day he spends in the house, and Mrs. Mills is heard telling Mr. Tuttle, "I do not think he knows where he is." Grace later sees an old woman dressed up like her daughter. Grace says, "You are not my daughter!" and attacks her. However, she finds that she has actually attacked her daughter instead. Anne refuses to be near her mother afterward, while Grace swears, she saw the old woman. Mrs. Mills tells Anne that she too has seen the people, but they cannot yet tell the mother because Grace will not accept what she is not ready for. Charles is stunned when Anne tells him the things her mother did to her. He says he must leave for the front and disappears again. After Charles leaves, Anne continues to see things, including Victor's whole family and the old woman. Grace breaks down to Mrs. Mills, who claims that "sometimes the world of the dead gets mixed up with the world of the living." One morning, Grace wakes to the children's screams: all of the curtains in the house have disappeared, as Anne had said they might. When the servants refuse to help look for them, Grace realizes that they are somehow involved. Hiding the children from the light, she banishes the servants from the house. A series of loud noises from the upper story of the house follows this event. That night, Anne and Nicholas sneak out of the house to find their father and stumble across the hidden graves. They find that the graves belong to the servants. At the same time, Grace goes to the servants' quarters and finds a photograph from the book of the dead and is horrified to see that it is of the three servants. The servants appear and follow after the children, who make it back into the house just as Grace emerges to hold off the servants with a shotgun. They then say that they had died of tuberculosis more than 50 years before. The children run upstairs and hide but are found by the strange old woman. Downstairs, the servants continue talking to Grace, telling her that the living and the dead have to learn to live together. Upstairs, Anne and Nicholas discover the old woman is acting as a medium in a seance with Victor's parents. It is then that they learn the truth: the real ghosts are none other than Anne, Nicholas, and their mother, who is believed to have killed them in a fit of psychosis before committing suicide. Grace loses her temper and supernaturally attacks the visitors by ripping and throwing pieces of paper that lay on the table. However, the visitors are only able to see the paper ripping of its own accord, further confirming Grace and her children are indeed the ghosts. The truth finally clear to Grace, she breaks down with the children and remembers what happened just before the arrival of their new servants. Stricken with grief for her missing husband and increasingly frustrated by living in isolation, she went insane, smothered her children with a pillow, and then, in shock after realizing what she had done, put a rifle to her forehead and pulled the trigger. When nothing happened and upon hearing the laughter of Nicholas and Anne, Grace assumed that God had granted her family a miracle by offering them a second chance at life. Grace and the children realize that Charles is also dead, but he is not aware of it. Mrs. Mills appears and informs Grace that they will learn to get along, and sometimes won't even notice the living people who inhabit their house. She also informs them that since the children no longer have their mortal bodies, they are no longer sensitive to light, and for the first time the children freely enjoy the sunlight coming through the windows. From the window, Grace and her children look out as Victor's family moves out.

At a Antenna Company seminar, Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is introduced as the "goddess of the gamepod". She carries a single ski boot and describes eXistenZ, which is a new game system (metaflesh). Almost everyone in the room volunteers to test the new system. At the door, a game company worker Ted (Jude Law) screens Noel Dichter (Kris Lemche) for recording devices. Noel has an outdated gamepod, and is anxious about the demo. The demo uses flesh like gamepods to allows players to interact with the game. As they go into a trance to enter the game, Noel pulls an odd-looking gun out from inside his gamepod and shoots Allegra in the shoulder. The gamers attached to her feel the impact, and Noel gets shot by security. Ted grabs the gun and whisks Allegra away. In the car, Allegra throws Ted's phone away, as it can be used to track them. He uses a pocketknife to dig out the bullet, which is a tooth. They realize the gun and ammo are made of flesh and bone, which would not be detected by a scanner. They stop at a motel. Ted wants to check in with Antenna, but Allegra wants to test the game, and needs Ted to help her. Ted does not have a "bio-port". They go to a gas station and ask the attendant Gas (Willem Dafoe) to install an illegal port. He agrees, after recognizing Allegra. When she connects her pod to Ted, it short circuits, locking everyone out of the game. Gas reappears, holding a shotgun, and explains that Ted's port is useless. Ted shoots Gas in the neck before he can kill Allegra. Allegra and Ted drive to an old ski club, where they find Kiri Vinokur (Iam Holm). She hands the ski boot to Kiri for safekeeping, then Kiri and Landry (James Kirchner) work to repair the pod. Afterwards, Allegra and Ted jack into the game, and Ted's reality changes. Allegra says "you have to play the game, to find out WHY you're playing the game. They meet a gameshop owner, D'Arcy Nader (Robert A. Silverman), and Ted realizes the non-player characters (NPCs) must act based on his actions and speech. Nader gives them micro-pods, and they use them to port in. Ted's character makes a pass at Allegra, and she responds. During the encounter, the scene suddenly changes, and Ted is at a trout farm, working on a conveyor belt as "Larry", next to Yevgeny Nourish (Don McKellar). Yevgeny explains that the trout farm is now used for making game pods. Yevgeny recommends lunch at the Chinese restaurant, and to order the special. He finds Allegra, but she seems to react like the NPCs as well. Over lunch, Ted tells her he is nervous, and manages to pause the game. Back in reality, Ted starts to feel like the real world is fake, and vice-versa. They re-enter the game, and special of the day arrives. It's gross looking, but Ted's character eats it anyway. He assembles the bones into the same weapon that he found in the real world. He shoots the waiter (against his will), and the weapon is destroyed. Yevgeny appears, and tells them the waiter was a traitor. Yevgeny leads them to a breeding pool for the creatures and explains that they are working on undetectable weapons for a secret agency in addition to pods. The trout farm where Ted and Allegra work is owned by a company called Corticle Systematics, and Yevgeny's organization wants to destroy all non-real elements such as pod games. They return to the gameshop and speak with Hugo Carlaw (Callum Keith Rennie). Hugo shows them Nader's dead body and tells them Nader and Yevgency Nourish work for Corticle Systematics, and Ted shouldn't have killed the waiter. Hugo is with the realist underground. He tells them to assassinate Yevgeny. They return to the trout farm and find a game pod left for them. She ports into the pod, but something goes wrong. Ted cuts her link to the pod, and she begins to bleed out. Yevgeny arrives and burns the pod, which releases deadly spores. Allegra stabs him, and the farm catches on fire. They awake back in the ski lodge. Allegra's pod has caught the disease from the game. She injects the pod with a spore disinfectant, then sees Ted's bio-port is infected, too. She realizes Kiri installed an infected bio-port. She inserts a disinfectant pod his port, and says they cannot play for awhile. Suddenly the ski lodge is attacked, and the game cashier arrives, talking about freedom, and destroys the pod. Ted realizes they are still in the game. Outside, a battle rages, and the cashier talks about the victory of reality (the death of eXistenZ). He points a gun a Allegra, but Kiri shoots him from behind. Kiri explains that he copied the game, and tries to recruit Allegra to Corticle Systematics. Allegra shoots Kiri. Ted points out that she's committed murder, then tries to kill her. Allegra triggers the bomb she inserted into Ted's bio-port and celebrates, thinking she's won the game. Allegra and Ted awake back in the seminar, and the group de-briefs, applauding Ted and Allegra. The session proctor, Merla (Sarah Polley) tells everyone they will get a discount on the next game, transCendenZ. We realize Allegra was only playing a part of a game designer, and that Yevgeny is the real designer. Yevgeny tells Merle he is nervous about the anti-designer theme. Ted and Allegra shoot Yevgeny and Merle, then shout "death to transCendeZ!". The Chinese waiter asks, "are we still in the game?" End.
