Wendy (Dakota Fanning) - a young woman with autism and a fixation on Star Trek - lives a routine life in a San Francisco group home where she is monitored by the house manager, Scottie (Toni Collette). She spends her time writing a 450-page Star Trek script to enter in Paramount Pictures' writing competition in hopes of winning the $100,000 prize. Wendy is visited by her sister Audrey (Alice Eve), who shows her pictures of her infant daughter, Ruby, and reveals that she is selling their childhood home. Wendy asks Audrey to take her home, arguing that she will be able to buy back the house and help care for Ruby once she wins the screenwriting contest. Audrey refuses, informing Wendy she is not capable of caring for a baby. Unfortunately, Wendy has a meltdown and she leaves the group home weeping. After Wendy misses the mail-in date to send her script to Paramount Pictures, she decides to deliver the script personally. She leaves the group home early the next morning and is followed by the group home's small dog, Pete. Wendy and Pete board a bus to Los Angeles, but are kicked off and left by the side of the road after Pete urinates on the bus. Wendy then wanders into a shanty town, where she is robbed of most of her money. She then wanders to a nearby shop and is nearly swindled out of the last of her money by an employee. However, an elderly woman named Rose (Marla Gibbs) intervenes to stop him from exploiting Wendy. She sympathizes with her as her grandson also has autism, and lets Wendy accompany her on the senior citizens' bus. However, the driver falls asleep at the wheel, crashing the bus without warning. Following the bus crash, Wendy wakes up in a hospital in Bakersfield. Still determined to deliver her script as planned, she leaves Pete at the hospital and escapes. During her escape, Wendy loses part of her script by chance. She gathers used paper and begins rewriting the script. At the same time, Audrey and Scottie have realized Wendy has gone missing. They begin to search for her and request a missing persons report. After correctly deducing that Wendy left for Los Angeles to personally deliver her script, Scottie and her son Sam (River Alexander) leave on the road. The Bakersfield hospital notifies Scottie and Audrey of Wendy's whereabouts; police continue the search from there. Scottie and Sam find the missing script pages while scouring the hospital. Wendy then attempts to buy a bus ticket to Los Angeles, but is unable to do so as she has no money. She ultimately stows away on the next bus there, hiding inside the baggage compartment. Upon her arrival to Los Angeles, Wendy wanders around until two police officers recognize her from the missing persons report. Fortunately, Officer Frank (Patton Oswalt) eventually gains Wendy's trust by speaking to her in Klingon. The police officers bring Wendy to the police station, where she is reunited with Audrey and Scottie. They drive Wendy to Paramount Pictures so she can deliver her script there as planned. Despite being stonewalled by a bad-mannered mailroom worker, Wendy is able to sneak past security and submit the script to the turn-in box. Satisfied that she has completed her mission, Wendy informs her sister she did this to prove that she was more capable than Audrey believed. Wendy returns to the group home where she later receives a letter from Paramount Pictures informing her that her script was not chosen, but encouraging her to continue writing. Despite the rejection, she is satisfied with everything she has accomplished. Wendy visits Audrey at their childhood home and holds her niece in her arms for the first time, while her sister dearly embraces her.

10 years ago, Nick is in a hotel with his father (Joel Gretsch). Nick's father tells him that one day a girl will give him a flower, and that he needs to help her, explaining "help her, help us all". He hugs Nick, and then telekinetically shoves him through a wall just before a team of agents, led by a maid they passed in the hall, burst in and subdues him. The head agent, Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou) enters, and a force rips through, killing Nick's father. Cassie (Dakota Fanning) narrates. In 1945, Hitler started experiments to create psychic soldiers. Other countries took it up after WWII. Watchers are able to see the future in quick flashes and scenes. Movers can move objects and people with their minds. Pushers can "push" people into believing that certain things are or aren't true. Bleeders emit high-pitched sonic screams that destroy their targets (glass, internal organs...) Stitches can disassemble or reassemble any damaged tissue. Sniffs can take any object and get a history. Wipers can erase controlled amounts of memory. Shifters make objects appear to be something else, retaining approximate dimensions. Shadows are people whose ability is basically to block the effectiveness of other clairvoyants (Sniffers, mainly). Cassie is a Watcher. A drug is designed to boost their powers to turn them into soldiers, but they keep dying. Today, in a government facility, Kira (Camilla Belle) is being injected with an unknown substance, while Carver watches. The girl drops a glass marble, and appears to die. She suddenly revives & escapes, the glass marble obstructing closing doors, aiding her escape. Carver and his Mover Victor (Neil Jackson) discuss the fact that Kira is the first to survive the injection. She is also the first to escape with a vial of the drug, which could be dangerous in the hands of others. Nick is now grown, and a Mover. He bets on a roll of dice and loses when he fails to make them land correctly. He owes the other players $6,000. Two Sniffer agents from Division, Mack and Holden, show up. From them we learn that many Americans with powers have expatriated to Hong Kong to avoid Division. They start sniffing to find a trace of Kira, and leave when they don't, after warning Nick to stay out of trouble. Cassie arrives at Nick's apartment, never having met him before. She tells Nick of a case with $6 million. They talk, and Nick learns that Cassie's mother was abducted by Division. They are attacked by the children of the Pop family, (an organized crime family comprised of those with powers) another Watcher, (Xiao Lu Li, credited as "Pop Girl") and her Bleeder brothers. Nick and Cassie are caught by the sound and fall to the ground. Nick successfully Moves Cassie out of the line of fire. Pop Girl sees a vision of Kira sitting on a bench fading away, and stops her brothers from killing Nick. She says if they kill him now, they lose the girl, and that Nick will die regardless. Kira wakes up on a boat not far from the docks, near a Chinese fisherman with long fingernails. She sees a mirror that has "4100" and "Nick" written in her own handwriting. Cassie takes Nick to Teresa (a Stitch). Teresa was told to be there, and to help them, by Cassie's mother. Teresa repairs Nick. Cassie gives Nick a flower, convincing him to help her, as told by his father years earlier. Mack and Holden locate Kira, But she Pushes Mack into thinking that Holden killed his brother. He shoots Holden and Kira escapes. Discovering his blunder, Carver Pushes Mack to kill himself. Nick and Cassie head to a club based on Cassie's drawings, and meet ex-Division agent, Hook Waters (a Shifter). They tell him about the bead, and he makes a nearby woman's earring look like the picture Cassie drew. Hook also tells them about a Sniffer named Emily, who could help them track down the case. They take the fake bead to her. Emily (Ming-Na) takes the fake bead and shows them the identical, real bead she has been given. The beads in question had broken off of Kira's bracelet during her fight with Mack. They have been distributed by Carver to Sniffers across the country. Emily directs them to a pier where they find Kira, who fires a gun at Nick. He recognizes her as his ex-girlfriend, who he used to run cons with on Coney Island. Kira has had her memory wiped to escape Division. Cassie pulls Nick aside and shows him a drawing that shows her, Nick and her mother dead. Cassie wants to dump Kira, stating that she is changing the future for the worse, but Nick calls Pinky, a Shadow. They get a room, and Pinky promises to hide Kira from the Sniffers. Cassie finds a key in Kira's shoe which says "4100". She steps out and walks the streets, and Nick and Kira reconcile in the bathroom. Outside Cassie finds Pop Girl tracking her. Nick decides they need to split up. The next day, Pop Girl tracks them down, but Cassie sees her coming. They escape and Nick sends Kira away with Pinky. Nick uses Emily to track Carver, following him into a restaurant. Cassie waits outside. Carver tells Nick that Kira will die without consistent injections of the drug. Nick falters. Carver's men attack Nick, as Carver steps out to find Cassie. She tells Carver that if Nick dies, they lose Kira. Carver goes back in and orders Nick's release. Nick figures out that Pop Girl is able to track them because the future is predictable, and the only way to throw her off is to make the future unpredictable. Nick writes letters to Cassie, Hook, Emily, Pinky and Kira, and a last one to himself. After he gives them all the letters, he plans to get his memory Wiped of ever having written them. Kira, who is beginning to get sick, reveals to Nick that the case contains the drug. Cassie and Emily track the case to a building in HK, and also realize that the key opens a locker that holds the case. Pop Girl "Sees" this & draws the case and the syringe. Nick puts Kira in a cab with Pinky. She asks him when she should open her envelope, and he says, "when you start to doubt the truth." Pinky hands Kira, who is visibly sick and appearing to have trouble holding herself up, over to Carver and Victor. Pinky leaves and opens his envelope. Getting out of a taxi and meeting up with Nick, he says, "he knew he wasn't getting paid yet." They head to the docks, where they find the same old man who Wiped Kira. The old man tells Nick that a woman paid for Kira's Wipe 5 years ago. Nick pays the man, with the money Carver gave Pinky, to wipe the last 2 hours from his mind, and to read a red envelope afterwards. As the memory is wiped, Pop Girl loses the connection and is stunned. Hook passes through security posted at the base of the Shadowed building with Shifted credentials. He rides an elevator to the top floor, where an old woman points a gun at him. He tells her she has done well and that the job is over. She was placed there by Kira to hide the case from Division. Hook takes the case back to the room where Cassie and Emily are waiting, and makes an identically shaped red suitcase look like the Division case. Cassie takes the case, and exits the room. Nick wakes up in the same boat as Kira. He opens his envelope, and it says, "go home." Teresa attacks him when he gets there, having been sent by the Pop family. The Bleeder brothers take the case to their father. Cassie finds Nick, and Nick tells her to run in a random direction so no Watcher can track her. Cassie does as he says, but Pop Girl still finds her. Pop father finds the case with a Soy Sauce bottle shifted to look like a syringe. Carver tells Kira that she was an agent, but something went wrong when she took the injection. Cassie is traced by Pop Girl, but just as she is about to shoot, the Chinese man grabs her and Wipes her memory. He reveals that Cassie's mother paid for Kira's memory wipe, 5 years ago. Nick calls Carver and asks to deal the drug for Kira. When he gets to their room, she is dressed as an agent, and tells Nick their relationship was a lie. She and Carver make him take them to the location of the case when the Pop Family arrives. As the fight ensues for the case, Nick tells Kira that her memory of being an agent is a Push. Carver tries to Push him to jump off the building, but Nick injects himself with the drug & appears to die. Kira and Carver leave. Later, Cassie arrives & kicks Nick up. She hid the case in a dumpster outside the building. Nick had injected himself with soy sauce. Nick asks Cassie how long her mother has been planning all of this, and Cassie replies "probably since before I was born". Now, we understand that Cassie's mother allowed herself to be captured, to place herself inside the Division headquarters at precisely the right time to help Kira escape, and let everything else fall into place. The entire plot of the story was foreseen by her and manipulated into being by her actions. At that moment, Carver and Kira are sitting on a plane headed for the U.S. Carver is asleep. Kira looks worried, and is going through her purse, when she finds the red envelope. She remembers what Nick told her, "open it when you begin to doubt the truth." She opens it, and there is a picture of a slightly younger Nick and Kira smiling at a camera, with the Coney Island entrance in the background. On the photo is written, "Kill him. See you soon. Nick." She stares at the photo in shock, and then her eyes narrow as she stares at Carver. We see him in the reflection of her eyes, and his own eyes open as she says, "put your gun in your mouth. Pull the trigger," and the screen fades to black.

With the birth of a new litter of 11 piglets, the farmer must eliminate one so the mother can feed them. The farmer gets his ax and selects the runt of the litter when he is stopped by his daughter, Fern (Dakota Fanning). Fern begins to feed her new piglet and names him Wilbur (voice of Dominic Scott Kay). After Wilbur gets strong enough to be on his own, he is put into the barn across the road. In the new barn, he meets many different animals: cows, sheep, geese, a rat, a horse, and of course a spider named Charlotte (voice of Julia Roberts). Wilbur's friendship with all the animals in the barn brings them all together, and they become one big happy family. There is only one problem that Wilbur doesn't know, he is a spring pig, and they don't usually get to see winter. Charlotte promises Wilbur that she will do something to save his life. Charlotte spins the words "some pig" in her web to show the farmer a miracle that may save Wilbur's life. Douglas Young (the-movie-guy)

The film begins with Morgan Freeman's voice saying "No one would have believed in the early years of the 21st century that our world was being watched by intelligence greater than our own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns, *they* observed and studied, the way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency, men went to and fro about the globe, confident of our empire over this world. Yet across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded our planet with envious eyes and slowly, and surely, drew their plans against us." Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) a container crane operator at New York city port, estranged from his children, is visited by his ex-wife, Mary Ann (Miranda Otto), who drops off their children, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin), at his house as she is going to Boston to meet her parents. When Robbie takes Ray's car out without his permission, Ray goes out to search for him and notices a strange wall cloud, which starts to send out electromagnetic pulses in the form of lightning. This disables all electronic devices in the area, including cars, forcing Robbie to return. Ray leaves to investigate, telling Manny, the local mechanic, to replace the solenoid on a dead car. Ray reaches the place where lighting struck and finds a hole has appeared in the ground from which a massive machine with three long legs appears. After emerging, the Tripod opens fire with destructive heat-rays, vaporizing bystanders and destroying everything in its path. Ray manages to escape; he packs up his kids and leaves in the vehicle Manny repaired as the Tripod destroys the town. He drives to Mary Ann's house to take refuge that night. Loud and violent explosions occur in their sleep. The next morning, he discovers that the tripods have caused a Boeing 747 to crash into the houses. He meets a news team surveying the wreckage. The sole female member shows him footage of Tripods invading Earth, with the unknown pilots riding down the lightning to the machines and using them to destroy other cities, revealing that they have been preparing this invasion for a long time. Ray flees to join Mary Ann in Boston. Robbie, obsessed with joining the fight against the hostile aliens, tries to leave with the U.S. military, but Ray and Rachel stop him. They are forced to leave their car after a mob attacks them in order to take the vehicle, and survive a Tripod attack while navigating the Hudson River on a ferry. The family then encounters the military preparing an attack on the Tripods. Upon seeing Robbie's determination to join the fight, Ray lets him go with the military. After he disappears, the tripods destroy all military resistance and presumably killing Robbie in the process. The tripods are revealed to be protected by some kind of energy shield that makes them invulnerable to all forms of attack. While escaping, Ray and Rachel are offered shelter and protection by a stranger, Harlan Ogilvy (Tim Robbins), who vows revenge on the aliens after his family was killed upon their arrival. While hiding in Harlan's basement, they witness the Tripods spreading a strange red weed substance over the ground, and avoid detection by aliens who arrive to explore the basement. The following morning, Ogilvy suffers a mental breakdown after witnessing a Tripod harvesting blood and tissue from a human to fertilize the weed. Concerned that Ogilvy's yelling and ranting will attract the Tripods, Ray kills Ogilvy to silence him. Ray and Rachel's hideout is exposed when a probe catches them. Ray cripples the probe using an ax, but Rachel is caught by a Tripod, ironically the same one that Ray saw in the beginning that destroyed the town. While pursuing the Tripod, Ray finds several hand grenades and detonates one of them to attract the Tripod's attention, intending to be captured to try to rescue Rachel. His plan works and he is put into a basket with Rachel and several other prisoners. The aliens try to pull Ray inside the Tripod to be used as fertilizer, but the other prisoners manage to save him. Then, the grenades left by Ray inside the Tripod detonate, causing the Tripod to collapse, and freeing all the captives. Ray and Rachel arrive in Boston, where they notice the red weeds are starting to dry up and die, and the Tripods appear to be dying also. They witness a Tripod acting strangely. Ray notices that a cluster of birds are circling and landing on the machine, indicating its force fields are no longer functioning. Ray alerts nearby soldiers, who attack and destroy the Tripod. Approaching the downed machine, a hatch opens, releasing a copious amount of red weed fertilizer and revealing an alien as it dies. Ray and Rachel reach Mary Ann's parents' (who are portrayed by Ann Robinson and Gene Barry, the stars of the 1953 film version) house and find her and, to their surprise, Robbie, who has survived the attacks. As the camera zooms out, the film ends with Freeman's voice saying, "From the moment the invaders arrived, breathed our air, ate and drank, they were doomed. They were undone, destroyed, after all of man's weapons and devices had failed, by the tiniest creatures that God in his wisdom put upon this earth. By the toll of a billion deaths, man had earned his immunity, his right to survive among this planet's infinite organisms. And that right is ours against all challenges. For neither do men live nor die in vain."

Molly Gunn (Brittany Murphy) is a carefree and fun-spirited girl, living like a princess in a fairy tale. Her father was a popular rock-and-roll guitar player, who died in a plane crash with Molly's mother when she was a little girl. On her birthday in a nightclub, she meets Larraine "Ray" Schleine (Dakota Fanning), a hypochondriac and uptight young girl in a bathroom. Ray turns out to be the daughter of Roma Schleine (Heather Locklear), a well-known record company owner. There she also meets an ambitious Australian singer Neal (Jesse Spencer), who is trying to get Roma to sign him a record deal. Molly immediately falls for him and invites him to her apartment after the party. When at her apartment, Molly shows an amazed Neal the collection of guitars that her father left behind when he died. Bored by Molly's strange behavior, which includes owning a pet pig named Mu, eating Pez, speaking French, and various other oddities, he eventually leaves her for his career, but she does not give up on him. When Molly's accountant vanishes with her US$100,000,000 inheritance, she is left with nothing but debts, and she needs to find work in order to survive. But she has no previous experience or skills. She moves in with her best friend, Ingrid (Marley Shelton), who tells her that in order to stay with her, she must find a job. She is hired to be Ray's babysitter. Ray, as it turns out, lives in a fancy uptown apartment with her mother, who is too busy with work and clubbing to pay attention to her. Ray's father is in a coma, and under the care of a private nurse in the apartment. Ray doesn't seem fazed by her father's state at all. When they first meet, Ray is extremely rude towards Molly and disapproves of her carefree attitude and tardiness. The two get in a fight while they wash the dishes, which leads to Molly attempting to leave the apartment. She is stopped by Ray, who says "When you work for me, you leave when I say you can leave". Molly informs her that she in fact doesn't work for her; that she is employed by her mother. Ray responds by saying that because of Roma's work schedule and Molly's status, she is technically working for her. Molly yells that she quits, and angrily storms out of the apartment, giving herself a bloody nose as she slams a swinging door. Ray attempts to maintain order in her life by stifling her emotions - she often quotes Mikhail Baryshnikov: "Fundamentals are the building blocks of fun." She even feels this way about ballet, her beloved passion, leaving practice early when the class begins dancing freestyle. The day after the dish washing confrontation, Molly meets Ray at one of her ballet classes, apologizes for her behavior and asks for her job back. Molly gives Ray her pet pig Mu as a gift. Molly attempts to show Ray how to have fun, which at first causes them to fight. The two go to the amusement park Coney Island, only to find out that it is closed for the season. That night, as they ride back home on the subway, Molly tells Ray about the night her parents died. As Ray goes to bed, the two get into a conversation about Molly, in which Ray accuses her of being scared of growing up. Molly begins to talk about an incident in her childhood shortly after her parents' death in which she ran away to Coney Island and sat down in the Spinning Teacup ride, spinning round and round over and over again. Molly begins crying and tells Ray that she had hoped they could go to Coney Island together. Ray holds Molly as she cries, and the two fall asleep in Ray's bed. The next morning, Molly wakes up to find Ray gone. When she looks for her in the kitchen, she sees Neal there, and she finds out that he is sleeping with Roma in order to get a record deal. Later, Molly learns that Ray was in her father's room reading. She advises Ray to share her life with her father for his better recovery, telling her about a show she once saw about comatose people who recovered because their friends and relatives talked to them while they were still comatose. Ray does this, telling her comatose father all about Molly, ballet, and Mu. The next day, Molly arrives at Ray's house to find that Ray's father is gone from his room. She learns from the nurse that he had died that afternoon. Devastated, Molly rushes to Ray to offer her condolences. Ray is disturbingly emotionless, and calmly orders Molly to leave. Later that night, Molly is called to Roma's office, where she is informed that she is fired. Molly begins to criticize Roma on her relationship with her daughter, saying she doesn't "...give her respect, you give her whatever she asks so that you don't have to deal with her." She then asks Roma if she knows certain things about Ray, such as what stage she is at in ballet, or how she likes to drink her tea. Molly tears up the payment Roma had given her, and angrily leaves her office. Neal tries to get back together with Molly; since leaving her, he hasn't written a single song. But Molly refuses to be with him, as she now sees how selfish he is. She auctions her father's legendary guitar collection for financial support, and the whole collection is bought by a stranger on the phone. Days later, Molly gets a call from Roma, who tells her that Ray is missing and asks her for help. Molly searches desperately for Ray and eventually finds her in an amusement park sitting in the Teacup ride. The two ride the teacups for a bit, and afterward, as Ray vomits into a garbage can, Molly tries to comfort her. Ray at first reacts angrily and violently, but the two end up in a tearful embrace. Later, Molly attends Ray's father's funeral, where she reconciles with Ingrid, and sees that Roma is taking more of a part in Ray's life. Before Ray comes out to meet the rest of the guests at the funeral, she requests to speak to Molly alone. After they talk, Molly tells Ray that they are going to be best friends. Ray says that grown-ups are never friends with kids, to which Molly responds, "I don't see any grown-ups around here." Molly applies for Fashion Institute of Technology and gets positive reactions from them. She attends Ray's ballet recital. In the recital, Ray wears the tutu Molly made for her, and Neal makes an appearance as the lead singer, singing "Molly Smiles", a song Molly's father wrote for Molly. As he sings, he plays on one of her father's guitars, and some of the ballerinas hold his other guitars as they dance, proving that Neal was the one who bought the entire collection. Near the end of the recital, Ray does a freestyle dance, much to Molly's amusement. The scene fades with a shot of Molly smiling in the audience, and the credits roll as a voice of Ray is heard: "Every story has an end. But in life, every ending is just a new beginning."
