Advocate Anand Mathur (Shekhar Suman) draws up a will for his client Chunnilal Poddar, while writing a novel "The Great Don", and erroneously makes out the will with a provision that the beneficiary must be a criminal Don in order to inherit the billions of rupees. The beneficiary is a bachelor named Rahul Bhargav (Suniel Shetty) (who is the son of the gardener for Poddar), who wants no part of being a Don, criminal or anything of the sort. But Anand persuades him to rob a bank to become a don, and fulfill the will condition. Kanchan Dhillon (Raveena Tandon) is a police officer. Inspector Inamdar (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) is Kanchan's boss at the police station. Inspector Kaate (Shakti Kapoor) is her colleague. Inamdar doesn't give any cases to Kanchan as she is very accident prone. Inamdar has info on an impending bank robbery and Kanchan begs him to give her the case. Kanchan goes there when Inamdar gets news that a CBI team is already there led by Donne (Asrani). When the robbers arrive, they take Anand and Rahul hostage, but they escape when Anand fires the gun he had brought for their own robbery. In the melee, Donne captures all the goons. But then Kanchan arrives and believes Donne is the robber leader and has kept the CBI team hostage. Kanchan arrests Donne and his team and beats them up in the locker till Inamdar arrives and realizes that Kanchan has arrested the wrong group and let the real robbers go.. Kanchan is Rahul's next door neighbor. Rahul is now determined to become a don and practices his lines. Kanchan hears him practicing and thinks Rahul is threatening someone and barges in.. that's how they meet. Kanchan realizes that Rahul is a sweet and sensitive person.. Rahul tells her about his situation Kanchan wants to redeem herself in the department and assures him that she will use her influence and ensure that he gets to be the Don in no time at all. He plan is that Rahul will feed her insider info about other dons, whom she will arrest and improve her profile in the police ranks. Meanwhile Anand has the hots for Kanchan, who includes Anand in her plan as he has the connects in all the high places They enter the club of famous don DEka (Deepak Shirke). Deka also gets the hots for Kanchan as she flirts with him. Kanchan uses Deka's attraction towards her to instigate Rahul into fighting him and establishing himself as a don. Rahul is very weak and careful and cant hurt Deka, so Kanchan uses every trick in the book and finally Rahul beats Deka when he loses his contact lenses and cant see anything and Rahul throws him out. That night Kanchan gets drunk and flirts with Rahul and he drops her home. She asks her to sleep with him, which he does (cuddling). The next morning, Kanchan thinks Rahul got into her bed without asking her and is mad at him.. They both fight.. Inamdar gets info that International criminal Jindaal (Gulshan Grover) is in town. Kanchan was excluded from Inamdar's meeting and steals the photo from Kaate's files, who is in charge of arresting him. Meanwhile Anand & Rahul are planning to kidnap nuclear scientist Krishnamurthy (Makrand Deshpande).. Kanchan swaps Jindaal's photo with Krishnamurthy. ISI has a reward of USD 10 MM for Krishna's kidnapping.. Jindaal is also looking to kidnap Krishna to establish himself as the premier Don in India. B-49/Tracy (Isha Koppikar) is an agent of an unknown power who is keeping an eye on Jindaal and aims to kidnap Krishna after Jindaal kidnaps him.. Donne is in charge of Krishna's security. Rahul manages to kidnap Jindaal, when he was trying to kidnap Krishna. Kanchan is happy since Rahul has done her work and reveals to him that the person he captured is Jindaal Meanwhile Jindaal understands Rahul's issue and convinces him that He will accept Rahul as the top Don of the country and help him get his inheritance, if he and Anand keep him away from Kanchan/police. Rahul locks up Kanchan. Jindaal tells the court appointed committee of Mr Dastoor (Dinyar Contracto) and Advocate Nadkarni (Achyut Potdar), that Rahul is a don. But the committee has doubts about Jindaal's own criminal record and says that Jivan is a bigger don than Jindaal. To improve his crime record, Jindaal kills all the assembled dons of the country from various states. Once the committee is convinced and leaves, Anand wants to release Kanchan. But meanwhile, Jindaal frees himself and changes clothes with Inspector Kaate, who had arrived with his force.. Jindaal escapes and puts Kaate in his place (with the face covered), whom Kanchan arrests.. Inamdar calls a press conference and is super embarrassed when the arrested person turns out to be inspector Kaate. Kanchan is suspended. Meanwhile Kaate is ordered to keep an eye on Rahu, who was seen dancing with Tracy, who is suspected of kidnapping Krishna. Meanwhile it is revealed that Jindaal was working on behalf of Pakistani ISI to kidnap Krishna. Meanwhile Rahul, Anand and Kanchan pool their heads to figure out where Tracy will hand over Krishna to the ISI.. through the newspaper they decode a coded ad to figure that the exchange will take place at an art gallery All parties, including Donne, Inamdar + Kaate, Jindaal + Deka, enter the gallery, having cracked the ad clue. Rahul, Anand & Kanchan make contact with Tracy to strike a deal for Krishna. Tracy takes Anand with her, even as confusion reigns at the gallery as various parties start dealing with each other. Tracy knows Anand is not ISI and wants him to reveal his truth. Anand admits the truth behind the will.. Turns out Tracy is a big fan of Anand's novels and is in love with him. She vows to take care of Anand Meanwhile Anand calls Rahul+Kanchan and tells them that Tracy is meeting Jindaal the next day at Madh Island to strike a deal for Krishna. Jindaal promises ISI to hand over Krishna at a frontier palace hotel in Rajasthan border district. ISI plans to exchange Krishna with a look alike Mushtaq. Kanchan's father is a famous retired police officer and informs Inamdar+Kanchan that his friend has news that ISI is planning a big operation at Hotel frontier palace in Jaisalmer. Kanchan also plans to sub Krishna with look alike petty thief Munna Vikhroli. Police+CBI reach frontier hotel disguised as a film crew who wants to shoot the climax scene for their pic. Major confusion reigns through the hotel as the parties get confused over Krishna, Mushtaq and Munna, who all look alike. Inamdar arrests Tracy and condemns her for being a traitor. Tracy reveals that she is a Raw agent Shalini Mathur and if Donne and Inamdar had not intervened, she would have arrested the ISI agents in India. Indians have custody of Mushtaq. Jindaal has custody of Munna, while the ISI agents have Krishna, but think he is Mushtaq. To remove the confusion ISI agents get all 3 Krishna's together and try to identify who is real. But Kanchan switches off the lights and melee ensues. Now, ISI agents get away with the real Mushtaq and only realize it at the border. Jindaal gets away with Munna, who escapes after picking their pockets. CBI+Police+RAW have Krishna. Kanchan is promoted and Rahul gets his 400 Crores inheritance.. Anand gets the idea for a new novel

When Karan finds out that his father, an honest Municipal Commissioner - convicted by a manipulated judgement at Court - has committed suicide, being a former soldier, he knows that there is a lot more than what meets the eye. He finds out that it was Advocate Ravi Verma who manipulated the case and put his father in jail. Karan, hence decides to avenge his father`s humiliation and death. He gravely injures Ravi and kills Ravi`s wife Kajal (Mahima Choudhary). On returning home post recovery, Ravi finds a lady calling herself Kajal and claiming to be his wife. this, he has to believe not only because she looks exactly like Kajal, but also because he has lost all the memory of his life prior to the accident. Who is this woman? Will Ravi`s memory loss cure? And what will Karan do when he finds out that Ravi is still alive, and as it looks, Kajal too..?

Kajal (Karisma Kapoor) is the daughter of Prof. Sidhant Sharma (Alok Nath). Kajal is an innocent girl and always lived her life on her principles and with values taught by her father to always take stand for truth. Karan (Sunny Deol) is a criminal working for Gajraj Chaudhry (Amrish Puri). The film starts with Gajraj told by his accomplices that one journalist is writing stuff against him, so he orders Karan to kill him. Karan kills that journalist in a market full of people including Kajal and his father standing in the crowd who witnessed the whole merciless tragedy. Kajal's father reports the crime being the eyewitness, to police. When Karan got to know about the report, he enters Kajal's house and starts beating her father. In order to protect her father and stop Karan, she slaps him. For the first time, Karan notices her and gets in eye contact with her which stopped him (as he got stuck with beauty and charm in her eyes). And then Karan goes to Tulsi (Tabu), a prostitute in one brothel where he is not able to forget Kajal's eyes and in frustration leaves the brothel. Karan starts stalking her and when she is stopped by him in a temple. Kajal felt disgraced, faced her fear and without being scared, lashed out on him by criticizing his behavior and thinking that he wants to fulfill his lust for her, after listening to which Karan feels disgusted and leaves the temple. Karen's soft side is depicted where he saved one child, named Timepass, being mistreated by customers at a bar and took that child with him to his place after knowing that he is an orphan and lives on streets and works to survive which shows the reason of his present state, and why he wants to save the child from the horrors of life, and save that child's childhood which Karan had lost. After, Kajal and some other women are on a bus and are being harassed by some goons from which Karan saves them and hands over the goons to the police. After witnessing his courage and goodness in Karan to do the right thing, Kajal becomes infatuated with him and gets interested in him. Kajal becomes friends with Timepass from whom she gets to know Karan more and wants to be friends with him. She approached him through Timepass(child) and meets him regularly and in one meeting she made him realize the true value of friendship which Karan had never known because of his troublesome life. Once witnessing his terror in people she criticizes and asks for a promise to change his life for her. Karan who had never been asked to be good since his childhood, and now this girl wants to see him a changed man, teaches him true values of life, all this makes him want to be a good person. Karan leaves the criminal world to be with Kajal. Karan is now madly and passionately in love with Kajal and can't bear even the thought of losing her. One day at temple Kajal prays for his new beginning by expressing her love and promises that she won't let him be shattered again. Raju (Salman Khan), son of Kajal's father's childhood friend Ramakant Sahaye (Dalip Tahil), is enthusiastic, mischievous and flirtatious towards Kajal, and has come back from America to fulfill the desire of his parents for him to marry Kajal. Kajal does not know about this fact. She gets to know about it when she is told by his father about the marriage plans with Raju. She confessed to her father about her love for Karan and refuses to marry Raju, after listening to this and thinking about her afterlife with a goon, her father suffers a major heart attack. To save her father, being the righteous girl and thinking it is her duty towards her father, she agrees to marry Raju. Karan gets furious with this and goes to Kajal's house to beg for her love but Kajal disclaims her love and backs out and asks him to forget her and never to return. Kajal considers the circumstances that how she was helpless to be with Karan and in saving her father's life, she realizes that she should not dwell in her past and it is best now that she should accept the truth and move on. (Again, this shows her power to sacrifice her wishes to do what is morally right for her and what she is supposed to do). Kajal marries Raju. Karan fails to prevent the marriage and is upset, so he returns to a criminal lifestyle. Kajal promises to her father while bidding adieu that she will fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a wife in true and every sense. Raju and Kajal go to their honeymoon and in front of Raju's late mother's photograph, Raju confessed his passionate love for Kajal for years. With time she falls in love with Raju and they both are very happy with each other. They return to India after the honeymoon. However, she faints after overhearing Raju and his father's argument about their illegal affairs in businesses. Through a Doctor Raju gets to know that Kajal is pregnant but she is unhappy about the fact that their child will take born in an environment full of crimes and violence which she has been against all her life and criticizes his business's activities to which Raju replies that he did not know about the illegal affairs taking place, and promises to give her and their child the right environment and leaves Raju's fathers house. Because of Raju's decision, Gajraj worries about his interests in Raju's father's business thinking, Raju might become a danger to his business, and orders Karan to kill Raju. Karan who is unknown about Raju's reality goes to his house to kill him and there he comes across Kajal and finds out that Raju is the husband of Kajal. Kajal after seeing the old Karan in her house gets scared about his return in her life fearing that Karan is after her happy life now. Instead, Karan is on to the purpose of saving Raju now for Kajal's sake. One day after being rescued by Karan from goons Raju (who is unconscious) is taken to his house and where Kajal apologizes to Karan for her deeds with him which is overheard by Raju. Raju tells both Kajal and Karan about his discovery of their past. Raju very wisely understands and tackles the whole situation and conveys his thoughts about destiny's plays and its tricks in their lives that humans are helpless against destiny, but he believes in love and says love is the essence which connects people and that he respects Kajal and Karan's past and praises Kajal's fulfillment of her 'dharma' towards him and says that he will name their child Karan if it's a boy. Then suddenly Raju, Kajal, and Karan are attacked by Gajraj's goons and in escaping the house under attack Kajal suffers labor pains. Karan notices that and takes Raju and Kajal to a safe place. He reaches the brothel and asks Tulsi to help Kajal deliver the child safely. Goons chase them to the brothel where Karan and Raju indulge in a fight with the goons. At one point where Gajaraj is about to shoot Raju, Karan comes in between and takes the shots. Karan dies at the moment when Kajal delivers her baby. and the film ends with Raju holding their son whom Kajal calls with the name 'Karan'.
