This is where Shekhar runs into Amar from Canada's Shah industries. Amar reveals that he is going to marry his fiance in Canada the following week. Amar was in India to shop for a wedding dress for Pia, who wanted to get married in traditional Indian attire. Amar invites Shekhar to come to Canada and join Shah industries, but Shekhar politely declines and says that he is happy in Mumbai. On his way to the airport, Amar's cab breaks down. He is told by the driver to get a different taxi as Amar is getting late for his flight. Since the airport was only 1 Km away, Amar decides to walk, while talking on the phone with Pia, his fiance. At the same time, Shekhar was returning from the party with Bosco. Shekhar swerves the car to avoid hitting a girl who suddenly jumped in front of the car, but in doing so, he rams straight into Amar, who was walking on the pedestrian footpath. Amar dies on the spot. Bosco makes Shekhar leave the accident site before the police arrives, even though Shekhar sees Amar's phone on the ground and picks it up to hear Pia narrating a romantic poem, symbolizing their love. Bosco removes all evidence linking Shekhar to the accident. After Amar Shah's (Raqesh Vashisth) accidental death in India, Canada-based Shah Industries is on the verge of collapse. Pia (Sandali Sinha), Amar's fiance and a Managing Director of Shah Industries, is devastated. The company is under huge amount of debt, and the assets of the company are not even enough to pay off half the amount. Girdhari (Vikram Gokhale), his dad, is in shock and unresponsive towards others while Amar's sister Milli (Amrita Prakash) and grandmother (Dina Pathak) are in mourning. Inspector D'Mello (Manoj Pahwa) who is investigating the case is determined to find the person responsible for the accident despite his superiors' indifference towards the case. Months after Amar's death, the highly respected and talented business worker Shekhar Malhotra (Priyanshu Chatterjee) comes to Canada and meets Bosco. Shekhar says that he wants to apologize to Amar's family and is willing to undergo any punishment that the family deems appropriate. Shekhar tells Girdhar that he met Amar in Mumbai and says that it was his car that killed Amar. Girdhar is near catatonic and does not react. Pia realizes that she needs an Operations Head to make sure that the company is functioning again and restores faith in the lenders. Shekhar meets Pia and says that he met Amar in Mumbai, who offered him a job in Shah industries in Canada. Shekhar offers to re-build and restore Shah Industries without any compensation, stating Amar met him in India and offered him a job before his death. He is given the chance and goes about the uphill task of making the company viable again. Gradually, Shekhar heals the gaping wound left in the Shah family by Amar's death and they come to accept him as one of the family while he falls in love with Pia. What they don't know - except for Bosco (Rajesh Khera), Shekhar's friend in Canada - is that it was Shekhar's jeep that accidentally had hit Amar after he swerved to avoid hitting an innocent girl who had walked into the road, causing his death. Ridden by guilt Shekhar came to Canada to confess, ask for forgiveness, and do whatever he can for the family. Abhigyan (Himanshu Malik) is a wealthy Canadian industrialist who meets Pia and realizes that she is the right woman for him. He is considering proposing to Pia and helping to rebuild Shah Industries. But Pia has fallen in love with Shekhar. Eventually, a conflict arises between Pia and Shekhar regarding a proposition made by Abhi to take over Shah Industries. Shekhar realizes that Pia does not need his help anymore and decides to return to India. Pia stops Shekhar while he boards his flight and confesses her feelings for him. Shekhar denies his feelings and boards the plane. Devastated, Pia goes home and gets engaged to Abhi. At the airport arrives inspector D'Mello (Manoj Pahwa), from India in search of the person who killed Amar, and arrests Shekhar. They wait, with Bosco (Rajesh Khera), to board the next flight to India. Shekhar calls Pia and tells her how much he loves her and confesses that it was he who hit her fiance. Being drunk, Shekhar meets with an accident. Pia feels guilty about falling for the man who caused Amar's death and confesses it to Girdhari, who surprises her by speaking for the first time after his son's death. He tells her that Shekhar had told him the truth when he first visited them, and he believes Shekhar. Amar's family then makes Pia realize how much Shekhar has done for the family and that he is like Amar to them. Bosco informs them about Shekhar's accident. Abhi tells a skeptical Pia to go back to Shekhar as he is her true love. Meanwhile, D'Mello who is in the hospital with everyone, understands that the family needs Shekhar more than the law does and simply closes the case and leave. Shekhar recovers and unites with Pia while Abhi is left devastated and is comforted by his uncle.

The neighbors are suspicious as the groom's family did not demand any dowry and the bride's family conducted the wedding as a very low-key affair. Maya (Padmini Kolhapure) attempts suicide on the day of her nuptial night. Dr. Anand (Naseeruddin Shah), Maya's husband, who is apparently a doctor, treats her, and finds out that she attempted suicide. When Maya gains conscience, she confirms her secret to Dr. Anand that she didn't want to get married and was forced. Dr. Anand wants to know the full story of Maya's life. Dr. Anand lives with his dad (Arvind Deshpande), Mother Savitri (Dina Pathak) and daughter Chanda (Suchita Trivedi). Anand used to be a widower before his marriage to Maya, which was insisted upon by Savitri. Savitri is on her death bed and is not expected to survive much longer. Anand is a very mature person and understands the situation with Maya. He tells everyone at home that Maya was tired from the wedding and hence fainted. He allows Maya to tell her story in her own way. The story moves to a flashback, where an aspiring new music director, Prem (Anil Kapoor) [Prem Pratap Patiala Wale] and his sidekick Raju (Master Raju) come to Maya's house. They are looking to rent a room. Maya lives with her Maternal Grandfather (Nana) (Nilu Phule) and mother (Ashalata Wabgaonkar). She has a school going sister Sheela, and a disabled brother Prakash. Maya finds Prem funny as the elastic from his Pyjama keeps showing from under his Kurta. Nanaji puts certain conditions that Prem has to return home before 10 PM, no cooking inside the room, Rs 300 deposit and Rs 60 per month rent. Prem keeps all his money inside a packet hidden in his underwear and Bombay is known for pickpockets. Nanaji is looking for a suitable groom for Maya but cannot afford to pay any dowry. The house is also mortgaged. Several incidents happen which bring Maya and Prem closer. It is love at first sight for Maya as she falls for the naive, innocent Prem. [Hamari Bhi Koi Ijjat Hai, Gharana Hai, Parampara Hai]. When Prem goes to take a bath in a bathroom without any lock & puts Raju on guard. Raju takes off for dancing in a passing religious procession & Maya comes along inside seeing Prem in the buff. Then Prem and Raju return home late at night. Maya opens the door, but only allows Raju to pass. Prem is told that no one is allowed to enter home beyond 10 PM & Maya forces him to kiss her to gain entry. Prem rips his pants & Maya offers to mend them to Raju. Maya was sewing her own bra at the time and forgot all about it as she sews her bra to Prem's pants. Prem is livid and makes an entire scene in front of Nana. Maya thinks that Prem is cheap, but Raju tells Maya that Prem has his whole family in Patiala. His mum is a housemaid & Prem sells his blood to send some money home each week, till he is able to succeed in Bombay. Prem, aspiring to be a true music director in Bombay, rejects Maya's advances. Maya tries to seduce Prem by taking a bath in an open roofed bathroom in front of Prem and sending him Samosas. Maya even sells her gold bangles to send money to Prem's mother without his knowledge. Maya goes to meet Prem in secret late at night and wants to share a kiss with him. But Prem barely escapes when Nanaji calls Maya. Furthermore, Prem also in love with Maya, but believes that he isn't worthy of her. They declare their love for each other, and plan to elope. But destiny has other plans in store for Maya and Prem. The same day Maya's grandfather fixes her wedding with Anand & informs Maya of his decision. Maya & Prem decide to run away. On the day of their elopement, the two lovers are caught by Maya's parents. As a result, Prem and his sidekick are kicked out of the house and Maya is forced to wed Dr. Anand. Back to the present time, Dr. Anand confides in her that he only married her due to his ill mother Savitri (Dina Pathak), who wanted to see him settle down before her death. Dr. Anand promises to unite the two lovers after his mother's death. During the time of her stay, Maya gets attached to Dr. Anand's daughter Chanda (Baby Suchita). Maya is a dutiful daughter-in-law and even helps to take care of Savitri's bodily functions when the nurses are not around. Savitri hands over all the house keys to Maya. She also hands over all the ancestral jewels to Maya. Meanwhile, Dr. Anand searches for Prem and successfully finds him outside a mall. Dr. Anand pretends to be a movie producer and hires Prem to be the music director for his new film. When his mother dies, Dr. Anand attempts to reunite Prem and Maya. However, Prem being a strong believer in the traditional Indian values of marriage and fidelity says he can accept if his lover becomes someone's wife but cannot accept if someone's wife becomes his lover. At this point Maya has lived with Anand for all of 7 days. Prem asks Maya to remove the Mangalsutra from her neck so that Maya would be his former Maya. Maya cannot, as she is a simple Indian girl with traditional values. Then Prem asks Dr Anand to remove the Mangalsutra from Maya's neck. When Dr Anand attempts to do this, Maya doesn't allow him to do so. Prem then, reaffirms that marriage is a lasting bond, and that Maya should be with Dr. Anand as they have married each other. He wishes both of them well and leaves. Prem makes his way with Raju in the dark to the sound of his harmonium. Prem sacrifices his love for greater values and returns to his life of poverty, simplicity and loneliness.

Anupam lives at his palatial house with Daima (Lalita Pawar), Anupam's nurse maid, and now the matron of the house. Luckily, on a fine day he actually came face to face with his dream girl (Hema Mailini). The face of the painting is not made of colors now, but with flesh. An excited and astonished Anup rushed to her and told her about his feelings. But his dream girl, to his great shock, stole his money (from a briefcase inside Anup's car) and ran away!!! Greatly shaken Anupam now promises to himself to find the girl at any cost, and there is only one clue for finding her, the shop from where he brought the painting. That day Anup was going to meet Khanna for a business deal that was set up by his brother Prem. But due to chasing his dream girl, Anup never made it to the meeting, and Khanna believes that Prem betrayed him. Dream girl's real name is Sapna (Hema Malini) who runs an orphanage & steals from the rich, like Anup, to support her brood. One of her children, Chintoo, is a painter, who made a portrait & sold it to a vendor where Anup bought it. Sapna has a brother, Chandu (Asrani) who supports her in this noble cause. Prem Verma (Prem Chopra) is Anup's cousin brother & has got a girl named Roopa pregnant and forces her to leave the child at Sapna's orphanage. Prem also has debts with a loan shark Khanna, who wants to partner with Anup. Prem has promised to deliver Anup to Khanna in exchange of the debts. Prem wants Anup to sign on the partnership documents with Khanna. The company accountant (S. N. Banerjee) tells Anup that Khanna is selling Anup's goods to multiple parties even without having the goods in possession. So, if Anup signs the deal, the company will not be able to deliver the goods, and it will cost them Rs 8 Lakhs in losses. Anup confronts Prem, but still loves Prem & continues to support him without the knowledge of his grandfather Ashok Verma (Ashok Kumar). Prem is the son of Ashok's daughter, while Anup is Ashok's grandson. Anup sees meeting his dream girl as a good sign, as that prevented him from signing the partnership documents and causing a huge loss to the company. Sapna and Chandu team up to scam rich people out of their money to support the orphanage. Sapna poses as an unmarried mother (with Roopa's baby) and interrupts the wedding to claim that the groom is the father. The groom's father (D. K. Sapru) wants to pay off Sapna, but their family friend Colonel (Satyendra Kapoor) wants the groom to marry Sapna instead. This prompts Sapna and Chandu to run away, and to avoid detection by the police, Chandu hides the kid in a car. The car belongs to Anup, who unknowingly brings the baby home. Chandu and Sapna follow and pose as saints to get the baby back. They claim that the boy is an incarnation of the Lord. They distract Anup and Daima and escape with the baby. Sapna is in financial difficulty & decides to allow adoption of kids to survive. She even gives away Chintoo to Dr Kapoor (Ramesh Deo) (who lives in America and claims that Chintoo's disability can be cured with proper treatment in the US), but then can't see the kids being all sad as one of them is given away. She goes & gets Chintoo back. Ashok admonishes Anup for supporting Prem even when he knows of Prem's association with his hooligan friends. He is also sick of Anup's womanizing ways & wants to marry him off. Anup says he is in love & Ashok wants to meet the girl. Anup meets Sapna when she tries to swindle him again with the car hitting the pram trick. But this time Anup catches her red handed & gets her to pose as Princess Sapna, & his girlfriend in front of Ashok. Ashok is instantly fond of Sapna & refuses for her to leave the house. Now Chandu is caught by Colonel whom they duped earlier & is handed over to police. There is no one at home to care for the kids. The kids wander the streets to find Sapna & finally locate her. But Sapna is forced to refuse them due to the fear of disappointing Ashok & the money promised by Anup, which can pay for the well-being of all the kids. But Anup finds out the truth & helps to bail out Chandu & takes care of the kids. When Sapna finds out, she loves Anup. But Prem also finds Sapna's real identity. He tries to blackmail Sapna for money, but she refuses to play along, even though Prem knows that Sapna was once a call girl by the name of Champabai. Prem reveals the truth at the engagement party for Anup & Sapna. Ashok is furious but finds that Sapna has already left the house leaving a letter behind. Ashok refuses to allow Anup to marry Sapna, but his mind is made. Then Daima reveals that Ashok's son didn't have a son, he had a daughter before both husband and wife died in an accident. Daima wanted to save the wealth from going to Prem's evil dad, so gave the daughter to a woman named Ratna & brought Anup from an orphanage. Prem knows this Ratna & immediately connects that Sapna is Ashok's real granddaughter. Prem finds the real Ratna & pays her to identify Roopa (Alka) as the granddaughter. He then kidnaps Ratna, Sapna & the kids & plans to kill them all to remove all proof against Roopa. But Anup follows & rescues them. Ratna accepts the truth in front of Ashok. He accepts Sapna & her entire brood & marries her off to Anup.
