This phase of their story begins in 1989 Montréal when he, a college literature professor, writer and budding novelist, and she, an up and coming filmmaker on the brink of having her first feature film opportunity, have long been in a loving, committed relationship. That outward perfection is shattered when he tells her that he has long felt like a woman trapped in a man's body, and wants to make the gender transition. Beyond the issues of the transition itself which she will gauge herself in how quickly she wants to make them, Laurence will have to prepare herself for the reactions both by people she knows and by those she doesn't, who may be confused, ignorant and/or angry about the gender fluidity she exhibits especially in the early days as she tests the proverbial waters. The transition will add an extra layer of complexity in the already strained relationship she has with her parents, the issues with her mother different than those with her father. As the news comes out of left field for her, Fred, besides Laurence, is arguably the person most affected. Fred still loves her husband but admits that part of what she loves about Laurence is that he is a man. Fred's feelings on the matter, including whether she will stay with Laurence in light of the transition, ebbs and flows over time, if she stays which will also mean she having to deal with the external reactions for which she may be ill-prepared. —Huggo

In the 1930s, Foshan is a hub of Southern Chinese martial arts, where various schools actively recruit disciples and compete against each other. Although the Wing Chun master Ip Man (Donnie Yen) is the most skilled martial artist in Foshan, he is unassuming and keeps a low profile. As an independent wealthy man, he feels no need to accept any disciples and instead spends his days training, meeting with friends, and spending time with his family. However, his wife Cheung Wing-Sing (Lynn Hung) is often resentful of the time he spends training and discussing martial arts with friends and colleagues. Chow Ching-Chuen is Ip's friend who notices that people are getting richer in China. He believes that the spending power is increasing and soon people will demand more clothes. He decides to open a cotton mill in Foshan. Chow Ching-Chuen is Ip's good friend and partners with him in his new venture. Though not a professional martial artist, Ip is respected in Foshan due to the abilities he displays in friendly, closed-door competitions with local masters. One day, a local troublemaker named Yuan (Wong You-Nam) loses his kite, which lands in a tree in the Ip family's back yard. While retrieving it, Yuan witnesses Ip defeating fellow Kung Fu master Liu (Chen Zhihui) in a sparring match, and spreads the news around town, inadvertently embarrassing Liu. Yuan's brother Lin, a restaurant owner and disciple of Liu, publicly embarrasses Yuan as he tries to arrange a rematch between Liu and Ip. Ip's reputation is further enhanced when he defeats an aggressive, rude, highly skilled Northern Chinese martial arts master, Jin Shanzhao (Fan Siu-Wong), thus upholding the regional pride of fellow Southern stylists and others in Foshan. The Japanese invasion in 1937 adversely affects the life of everyone in Foshan. Ip's house is claimed by the Japanese and used as their Foshan headquarters. Ip and his family lose their wealth and are forced to move into a decrepit house. Desperate to support his family, Ip accepts work at a coal mine. The Japanese General Miura (Hiroyuki Ikeuchi), who is a Karate master, establishes an arena where Chinese martial artists compete with his military trainees. The Chinese earn a bag of rice for every match they win. Li Chiu (Gordon Lam), a former police officer and Ip's acquaintance, is now working as a translator for the Japanese and is making the offer to the martial artists working at the coal mine. Ip at first declines to participate in the matches. However, when his friend Lin (Xing Yu) goes missing, he agrees to take part in order to investigate. Ip arrives to see Liu executed by Miura's lieutenant, Sato (Tenma Shibuya), for picking up a bag of rice from a prior victory after conceding in a second match against three Karateka. He also comes to understand that Lin was killed in an earlier fight. Barely able to contain his rage, Ip demands a match with ten Karateka at once. Despite having not practiced Wing Chun since the invasion began (in order to conserve what little food his family had to survive), he proceeds to mercilessly crush each of them with a brutal barrage of his martial art mastery, showing none of the restraint he exhibited in previous engagements. His skill arouses the interest of Miura, who seeks to learn more about Ip and see him fight again. Ip collects Liu's bag of rice and gifts it to his surviving family. When Ip does not return to the arena, Miura grows impatient and sends Sato along with several soldiers to find him. The lieutenant then gestures at Ip's wife, prompting Ip to incapacitate them. Ip later visits his friend Chow Ching-Chuen (Simon Yam), who owns and runs a cotton mill in Foshan. Chow tells Ip that a bandit gang led by Jin Shanzhao is harassing his workers and trying to extort money from them. Ip trains the workers in Wing Chun for self-defense. When the bandits return to the cotton mill, the workers fight back using the techniques that Ip taught them. Ip himself arrives midway through the battle to take care of things personally and defeats Jin Shanzhao, warning him never to harass the workers again. After the fight, Ip confronts Yuan and gives him a small tin that belonged to Lin after informing him of his brother's death. Yuan opens the tin and finds his kite inside; this motivates Yuan to leave the gang. After overpowering them at the apartment, Ip and his family flee and hide in Li's house. The Japanese track Ip to the cotton mill and take the workers hostage. Despite Li's warnings, Ip surrenders himself to the Japanese while arranging for his wife and son to be sent to Hong Kong for protection. Miura tells Ip that his life will be spared if he agrees to instruct the Japanese soldiers in martial arts. Ip refuses and challenges Miura to a match, which Miura accepts, both because of his love for martial arts and because refusing the challenge would be a humiliation to the Japanese. Behind Miura's back, Sato threatens Ip with death if he does not allow Miura to win. The match between Ip and Miura is held in public in Foshan's square. At first, the two fighters seem equally matched, but Miura soon finds himself unable to penetrate Ip's impeccable defense and becomes overwhelmed by his relentless and direct blows. He is helpless to defend himself as Ip effortlessly uses him as a wooden dummy, inflicting a severe beating on him and clearly winning. As the beaten general lies down after his defeat, Ip looks over to the cheering Chinese crowd and spots his wife and child with Chow (the owner of the factory). Enraged, Sato shoots at Ip and Ip is hit in his shoulder, sparking a scuffle between the Chinese audience and the Japanese soldiers. During the scuffle, Li Chiu kills Sato with Sato's own gun. Ip is taken away in the middle of the chaos. The epilogue reveals that he survives and escapes to Hong Kong with his family with the help of Chow Ching-Chuen. There, Ip establishes a Wing Chun school, where his students come to learn martial arts from him, including Bruce Lee.

On his way home, Conner bears witness to his apartment exploding in an elaborate set up, killing his adopted daughter in the blast. Filled with remorse and loss of hope, Conner goes to a sanctuary in a monastery where he and other immortals are held in a state of hibernation by the monks to avoid the prize from being won. (Even though the prize was one at the end of the first film but, oh well.) While in hibernation, Conner has a memory of how his mother was convicted of witchcraft due to Conner's immortality by the townspeople Conner had been expelled from. Conner set out to rescue her in the ancient village but they were both taken over by the priest and his son, Jacob Kell, Conner's former friend. Conner's mother was tied to a stake and set ablaze while Conner was locked in a prison cell and forced to watch. He did escape his prison and kill many attackers but was unable to save his mother. He then killed the priest believing the priest to be attacking him, and was then attacked by Kell, who he mortally wounded- thus making him an immortal inadvertently. Conner mourned the death of his mother and returned home. With the flashback over, the monastery is laid siege to by a group of immortal bikers. The monk guardians are all killed, and the bikers' leader, Jacob Kell, arrives and makes his way into the sanctuary. One by one, he decapitates all the sleeping immortals, making his way to Conner who has begun to awaken and is trying to escape...Before we can learn of Conner's fate, we are then introduced to Duncan MacLeod, Conner's relative who is disturbed by a vision of killing during his training. He then goes to visit his friend, fellow immortal, Methos, who tells him of the Sanctuary. Duncan is in disbelief that Conner would ever desire to go there, but Methos concludes that Conner would do so as to protect the last living members of the people he loved. After the bloody sanctuary aftermath, Guardian Matthew Hale, observes the bloodshed and tells his men that they will now seek out "volunteers" to avoid the battle from continuing and the prize from being won. Duncan then has a memory of his adventures with Conner in Kildare Ireland in 1712, and how they rescued a beautiful lady named Kate from being waylaid by Highwaymen. Duncan later married Kate, and Conner arrived to tell him that Kate had the opportunity to become an immortal if killed suddenly. Of two minds about the issue, Duncan is unsure as to what to do of the matter. Conner encourages him to let Kate go, but Duncan is unable to. In a fit of impulse he kills Kate suddenly, only for her to awaken and scream in horror at what her husband is done. She flees his life and does not return. Duncan then travels to Conner's abandoned wreck of a home and is attacked by Kate who is still angry at Duncan for making her an immortal. After a battle with more immortals who attack, Kell arrives. However, before anything else can continue, Duncan is shot many times by an impatient immortal and falls out of a window where he is collected by Hale's men. The impatient immortal is executed by Kell for his actions in allowing Duncan to escape. Duncan finds himself being strapped to a hibernation device by Hale, but is unable to escape. Hale leaves and Duncan is taken over by sleep after Hale injects him with a drug. While out, Duncan has a memory of the time Conner appeared to him the moment Duncan became an immortal after a swift death in a battle. Duncan awakens to find himself being rescued by watcher Joe Dawson and Methos. They travel to a graveyard where Duncan enters alone and finds Conner, who tells him that Kell had the opportunity to kill him in the sanctuary but let him live in order to continue terrorizing him. Kell and Kate arrive. Kell taunts Conner, explaining that it has been him all along who has been killing everyone Conner loves in recompense for Conner killing his father the priest. Kell challenges Conner to a fight where they stand, and Conner accepts despite Duncan reminding him that it is against the Immortal's code of honor to fight on holy ground. The battle is very short and one-sided as Kell easily overpowers Conner and beats him to the ground, continuously taunting him, before leaving with Kate. Duncan offers to help Conner but Conner leaves in a huff, knowing that Kell will try to kill Duncan in order to make Conner';s life more miserable. That night, Duncan tracks down Kate in her modeling career and asks her why she is working with Kell. She explains that she only feels hate towards Duncan and sees that parallel with Kell in his hatred for Conner. However, after Duncan goes home and tries to sleep, Kate follows behind and enters his home. Despite initially fearing that she is there to kill him, Duncan then realizes that Kate is not here for that reason. The two then have passionate sex, paralleling the erotic experience they shared on their wedding night decades earlier. Afterwards, Kate's ill feelings toward Duncan return and she storms out of his home, only for her to track her down and tell her that it is not too late for forgiveness. Kate arrives back at Kell's lair where she and the other immortals realize that Kell will soon kill them and take their quickening when he no longer needs their services. Soon after, Kell gathers them all together in a mock representation of the last supper and decapitates them all one by one, finishing with Kate. Duncan has a vision of Kate's death and is struck with grief. He is then confronted by Conner on a nearby rooftop, who explains that Kell will not stop until both of them are dead, and that together, neither of them will beat Kell, and one must kill the other. Duncan refuses, prompting Conner to attack him. The two battle with swords all the while Duncan begging Conner not to continue. Conner then locks Duncan into a sword move to which Duncan is invincible against his opponent. Seeing what is conspiring, Duncan begs Conner not to continue, only to be met with Conner's last signs of humanity and love. Duncan tearfully tells Conner that he loves him and Conner smiles sadly, nodding in agreement. Duncan wrests his sword free from Conner's grip and swiftly decapitates him, killing Conner once and for all. Duncan then receives Conner's quickening and is overcome with emotion with the memories he sees of Conner's past lives. Duncan, strengthened with Conner's quickening, goes after Kell and the two do battle in an abandoned power plant. Kell beats Duncan around and comes close to killing him but hesitates in order to taunt him further. Duncan then tries his invincible move upon Kell but Kell deflects his move with a hidden dagger, and beats him down once more. However, Duncan's voice alters to that of Conner's as does his face which distracts Kell. Duncan then leaps over Kell and decapitates him in one bold stroke of his sword, before kicking his body off of the parapet and into a pool stating defiantly (in Conner's voice) "There can be only one, and you are not it!" Duncan is struck with Kell's overwhelmingly powerful quickening and is overcome with power and might. He collapses, spent to his knees, before making his way up as the victor, having finally gained the prize. He then visits Conner's grave, for which is in Scotland and tearfully pays his respect to Conner's memory saying, "I hope you've found peace, Conner."

A spoiled young man - on the run from a ruthless killer - hooks up with a puppeteer and his wife who are masters of the art of tai chi; the only style that can defeat the killer. A troublesome young man named Ta Sha rides a bike around town spoiling and ruining for others. But soon Ta Sha is confronted by his rival, the spoiled Chan Chuen-Chung who ends up fighting and humiliate Ta Sha in the process. This leads to Ta Sha plotting a revenge on Chung with the help of his friends by setting up an ambush and using fireworks to their aid. However, Chung - accompanied by his brother Yu Ping - manage to walk away from the ambush and use the gang's weapons against them. But as Chung is about to use fireworks on Ta Sha, Yu Ping makes Chung spare and let Ta Sha go. But Chung accidentally lights a set of fireworks resulting in Tai Sha getting heavily injured. Devastated and angered by Chung's actions, Ta Sha's vindictive father hires Iron Steel, an infamous assassin, to wipe out Chung and his entire family. Iron Steel closes in on the family and kills everyone on sight. Fortunately, Chung is present elsewhere and - after finding out that his family were killed while their house burned down - wanders around town in great grief. Later on, Chung meets a puppeteer who takes Chung in and introduces him to his wife. After escaping few more times from Iron Steel though, the puppeteer reveals himself as a master of tai chi and teaches Chung the art to counter Iron Steel's intense techniques and defeat him. Eventually, Chung discovers that his family didn't die in a fire but were murdered by Iron Steel who was hired by Ta Sha's father. This determines Chung to seek out and face Ta Sha's father and Iron Steel once and for all.
