This is an ensemble film about four families, inspired by true incidents in Japan. The story is set in Japan's snowy countryside. Mao is a high school student, dreaming of leaving the country for the city. But her mother wants to keep her tied to town. Keisuke is a 32-year-old running a café. But business has been slow, and he is under stress from having to borrow money from his wife's parents and living on a shoestring. The 25-year-old Kurosawa provides for his older wife and only daughter. He has a good life at work and home. His happiness and ambition are kept in balance. High school teacher Takahashi can't propose to his girlfriend. He has two aging parents and another elderly who is bedridden. A marriage would mean that she would have to take care of the three elderly. Then, a woman named Masumi Yokochi creeps up on them. Yokochi is a demon that lures families with money and a kind face, but later devours them. Four years later. Each family had changed drastically. Slowly the people overlap, and the money ebb away. "No money or dying. Which is more terrifying?"

A group of tourists arrives in Burkittsville, Maryland after seeing The Blair Witch Project (1999) to explore the mythology and phenomenon, only to come face to face with their own neuroses and possibly the witch herself. To cash in on all of the "real world" hype of the events in the first film, a man from Burkitsville, Maryland opens a "Blair Witch Hunt" tour, which shows patrons various locations from the original film. A bunch of college students decide to take the tour, and wind up in Rustin Parr's house. There, they decide to camp for the evening, but in the morning, they realize they didn't sleep and they don't remember anything that happened the previous night.
