A depressed dentist in mid life crisis tries to learn why one of his happiest patients suddenly commits suicide, and a dark comedic adventure ensues. Phil (Greg Kinnear) is a middle-aged, divorced dentist who's mildly depressed. One day Michael Fisk (Bradley Whitford), a published author, comes in to get some last minute dental work on referral from another dentist. Lonely, and drawn to Michael for his proactive view of life, as he's enthused about the success his book is having, his college-aged daughter Molly (Megan Charpentier) is coming home soon. Phil coincides with him and his family in a local restaurant. Afterwards he follows them home. One day, after Michael warmly kisses his wife, Phil follows him in his car. After he parks along a quiet country road, he walks into the woods. Phil follows, but to his shock he finds Michael hanging by his neck. Shaken up, he takes the shoes Michael had weirdly taken off beforehand. After the funeral, Phil goes to the grave distraught, drunk, and falls asleep on the mound amidst a heavy rainstorm. The next morning, Michael's wife Alicia (Emily Mortimer) finds him there, soaked to the skin. As she calls 911, he tells her his name is 'Spyros,' which causes her to believe he's his old friend from Greece. Alicia takes 'Spyros' home to get warmed up. She tells him about a bathroom project Michael had left unfinished, and without thinking, he volunteers to help. Meanwhile, his dentist receptionist leaves him a string of frantic messages, which are left unanswered. Michael's father-in-law (Robert Forster) comes by and doesn't realize Phil's not the real Spyros. In town, Phil runs into his brother Malcolm (Jay Duplass), and explains he will later explain what's going on. After many, many attempts, he figures out his computer password. Seeing pictures of Michael with Samantha (Taylor Schilling) on the computer, when Alicia is called in to clear out her husband's university office, Phil offers to tag along. Sam is rather odd with Alicia, explaining she hadn't gone to the funeral because of a work commitment. Alicia later tells him that she'd gotten a position over him because he'd turned it down. Police Detective Welling (Luke Wilson) stops by to tell Alicia that they are investigating Michael's suicide, noticing only two anomalies, his missing shoes and a possible stalker, both of which are Phil. That night, she calls 'Spyros' to meet, and talks him into trying to dance with a group of Greeks. Malcolm is there when Phil gets home, and he tries to get him to realize that what Alicia needs is closure. Shortly thereafter 'Styros' presents her with her finished bathroom. Phil is able to apologize to his daughter Mand finally offer her genuine support. Alicia asks 'Styros' to accompany her and her daughter at a university event, and a higher up, who doesn't trust him, tries to out him. Phil skillfully tells the truth about meeting at the dentist's and spying on him without saying it was his own practice in town. Then Samantha shows up, pregnant and wearing half of a set of pendants like Michael had bought. The tiles start falling off as Alicia takes her first shower, and the water pressure goes wacky. Just as 'Spyros' is arriving to help, Detective Welling has arrived to tell her they discovered who had been the 'peeping Tom.' When questioned by the officer, he explained he needed to know why someone who seemed to have a perfect life could end it. Alicia has placed a restraining order on him, he returns to his abandoned office and finds his loyal receptionist quit on him. Alicia confronts him to show him the theory of Michael's affair was wrong as Samantha is a lesbian. Phil again goes to the bridge's edge, accidentally falls in and fights against dying. Malcolm visits him in the hospital and he tells he's no longer depressed. Waking suddenly one night, Phil remembers Michael's shoes. He delivers the note inside to Alicia. We only see the words "sorry" and "my love." We never discover what was on it, but she starts playing the cello again and stops wearing her wedding ring. Phil eventually revamps his dental practice, and improves his relationship with Molly. Alicia shows she's made peace by returning a cap she'd given 'Styros.'

Frank and Susan's outlook is in outward contrast to their friend, irresponsible and womanizing Buddy Endrow, who along with a lawyer named Damon are probably Frank's two closest buddies. Frank practices what he preaches in that he makes to do and priority lists, the latter on index cards, one item per card so that they can be reordered if he feels the priorities change over time for whatever the issue. Two things that happen to Frank in succession in one day eight years into his and Susan's marriage lead to a series of misunderstandings by Susan, which in turn result in some revelations seriously impacting Frank, Susan and their daughter Jesse's collective as a loving, supportive family unit, and Frank's view of that life of order. Years later on the morning that Jesse is getting married, Frank feels the need to corner Jesse's fiancé, Ed, a man he doesn't know well, but believes may be second best for Jesse. In what little Frank has seen and knows about what has been Ed and Jesse's up and down relationship, Frank knows that Ed is questioning what he and Jesse are about to do in getting married. Frank proceeds to tell Ed that story of the happenings of that day eight years into his and Susan's marriage and its aftermath which is meant to affect if Ed goes through with the marriage, and how he may view marriage in its entirety. —Huggo

Frankie Morrison (Jack McElhone) is moving -- again -- with his mother, Lizzie (Emily Mortimer), and grand-mother, Nell (Mary Riggans). Lizzie promises this is the last move, but, as Frankie observes, "she says that every time". As they are settling into a flat, we learn explicitly that Frankie is deaf. We hear Frankie's voice over as he writes a letter to his father, Petty Officer Davey Morrison, care of his ship the Accra. It's clear Frankie is a frequent letter-writer, with a stamp collection supplied from his correspondent -- which, it turns out is his mother. Frankie's father is clearly not on the scene, and from Nell's reaction to a personal ad seeking Lizzie, it's clear the family is anxious to avoid being found. At a new school (again) Frankie suffers some predictable petty bullying, and some counter-balancing friendship from another classmate, Catriona (Jayd Johnson). Frankie agrees to a bet with the chief pest, Ricky Munroe (Sean Brown), who asserts that Frankie's Da won't show up when the ship arrives. Desperate as the day of the ship's arrival nears, Lizzie embarks on a pick-up outing to the local pub, but quickly leaves, disgusted and distraught. When Lizzie admits her predicament -- to find a total stranger to act as Frankie's Da for one day -- to her friend (and boss) Marie, Marie provides her a name and number. Lizzie meets the man, and when he agrees to the charade she hands him all the letters from Frankie to his Da. Early the day the ship is due, Frankie bolts out of the flat and goes missing for hours. His surrogate Da is at the flat when Frankie returns. He gives Frankie a book that is somewhat skeptically received, until he tells Frankie that chose it based on what he read in Frankie's letters. Frankie's face lights up, and he runs to embrace the man. At the football tryouts, Frankie delightedly claims the spoils of his bet from Ricky Munroe. The stranger and Frankie spend the rest of the day slowly getting acquainted, by the harbor. Frankie and the man ask Lizzie for one more day, which she initially rejects but is talked into. The three spend a great afternoon together, and walking home Lizzie explains the background - that Frankie's Da had hit Frankie as a baby, which caused his deafness. The man and Lizzie show a sense of connection, illustrated by one sweet kiss good-bye. Having finally responded to one of the ads searching for her, Lizzie meets her sister-in-law, and eventually visits her husband Davey in hospital, where he is dying. He wants to see Frankie, but when Lizzie refuses we see the anger and abuse that caused her to leave. She flees the hospital, though returns the next day with a photo and a painting from Frankie. Davey dies, and Lizzie tells Frankie. She goes to stop payment on the PO box where she'd directed all Frankie's letters, and finds one last letter from Frankie... to the stranger, with an acknowledgement that his "real Da" has died. He hopes the stranger will visit them again.

Elmo McElroy has been an underground chemist for 30 years, recently working for the drug lord The Lizard. Elmo has discovered a formula to make a drug 51 times more potent then any other and made up of all legal substances. When The Lizard Shows up with his partners to work out the sale, Elmo has rigged his warehouse to blow while he takes off to Liverpool with his formula in tow. The Lizard survives the explosion and hires Dakota, a hired gun, to go after Elmo. In England Elmo is met by Felix Desouza, an avid soccer fan and Elmo's contact responsible for bringing him to Felix's boss who si planning to buy the new drug. Dakota Attacks the meet, killing everyone except Elmo and Felix. The Lizard now whats Elmo alive, and Felix? well Dakota and Felix just might have a history together. Elmo and Felix escape from the meet, run into a gang of hooligans also looking to get the drug and get in a car chase with the police including crooked cop Virgil Kane. The two catch their breath by jumping their car onto a trash barge, where they see Dakota watching them spurring Felix into admitting she is his ex-girlfriend. Elmo deals with Felix to pay him 5% of what he sells his formula for if Felix can arrange a sale, leading them to Iki. Iki is an eccentric crime boss, who knows Felix and Dakota from back in the day, and agrees to meet Elmo and discuss the deal. At Iki's night club, Virgil Kane and the police break up the sale arresting Felix and Iki while Dakota escapes with Elmo her prisoner. She is to bring Elmo to the Lizard Alive. Elmo makes her a better deal, persuading her to shake off the Lizards influence and giving her a cut of his formula sale. Meanwhile Felix gets pressured into dealing with Kane to bust all the players and make off with the drug himself. Iki is released with Felix and they arrange to make the sale with Elmo at the big Liverpool vs Manchester soccer game. Felix and Dakota reignite their feelings and have some fun in the bathtub. Soon after, Elmo, Felix and Dakota arrive At Iki's viewing room at the stadium. Iki hands over the money, in bonds, for Elmo's formula while Elmo mixes drinks for them. Suddenly the Lizard arrives, still thinking Dakota is working for him, and toasts with Iki to creating a partnership. They drink what Elmo mixed and the Lizard then kills Iki. He's about to kill the others when Virgil Kane now arrives, thanks to Felix's tip, just in time for the chemicals in the drink Elmo made to react and cause the Lizard to explode messily. Elmo, Felix and Dakota, take cover behind an umbrella, grab the bonds and casually make their way part the stunned Kane and out into the world all free people.
