A retired military investigator works with a police detective to uncover the truth behind his son's disappearance following his return from a tour of duty in Iraq. Hank drives to Fort Rudd, New Mexico, to search. Within a day, the charred and dismembered body of his son is found on the outskirts of town. Deerfield pushes himself into the investigation, marked by jurisdictional antagonism between the Army and local police. Working mostly with a new detective, Emily Sanders, Hank seems to close in on what happened. Major smuggling? A drug deal gone awry? Credit card slips, some photographs, and video clips from Iraq may hold the key. If Hank gets to the truth, what will it tell him?

New York City, Career orientated divorce attorney Audrey Woods (Julianne Moore) and her glamorous mother Sara Miller (Frances Fisher) pose as perspective buyers of a Manhattan townhouse belonging to the emperor of infomercials, Mr. Gary Harrison. Audrey is representing Harrison's wife, Mary (Brette Taylor), in the couples upcoming divorce, and has used this as an opportunity to take an inventory of the artworks that reside in the building. Over lunch with Sara, Audrey comes to the conclusion that Harrison is attempting to scam his wife out of her entitled settlement, as some of the assets accumulated during the marriage have not been accounted for. Audrey is subsequently blind-sided by the news that Harrison has hired a new attorney, Daniel Rafferty (Pierce Brosnan). Audrey expresses her concern over Daniel's lackadaisical approach (He was sleeping in court) and offers a settlement prior to the case being taken before the judge, Daniel declines and Audrey is perturbed. As the court is brought into session, Audrey is confident that female Judge Abramovitz (Nora Dunn), will look favorably upon their case as she is a fellow divorcee. However, some banter between Daniel and Abramovitz indicates that they are friends. Daniel reveals that the artwork, claimed unaccounted by Audrey, was actually donated by Mr. Harrison, with the consent of Mrs. Harrison to a prominent museum. The Judge awards him a week in continuance, as he needs time to investigate Mary Harrison's dealings, specifically those regarding her six-month retreat to a specialist clinic dealing in sexual addiction. Audery is dumb stuck. Later Audrey is invited to a Law Society event & Daniel reveals she is there only because he endorsed her invitation. He is attracted to her, but Audrey is repulsed by him. They both give speeches with Audrey taking a cold & calculating approach to divorce law but Daniel giving a heartfelt speech of the ethics of their profession. Audrey attempts to make Daniel lower his guard by apologizing to him, & Daniel takes him to dinner. Later that night, they have sex. The next day in court Audrey argues that the prenup agreement is not valid as Mary deserves more than that. Daniel reminds of her speech the previous night "Intimacy changes nothing, business is business". Judge Abramovitz intervenes, states how neither counsel has proved to provide any evidence that the prenuptial was flawed in any way, to which she decrees a dismissal of the case, Daniel wins. Audrey is angry at Daniel for using her panties (which he had in possession from the previous night) to unsettle her in court. This failure sparks Audrey's victory over Daniel in their second meeting concerning the failed marriage of a basketball star. We then speed through a successive number of court appearances in which our protagonists meet head on as opposing counsel, and again and again we witness how each gives as good as each other gets in a successive number of cases. With each judge who presides over their arguments becoming even more infuriated by the animosity between the pair. Serena is a hip designer married to rock star husband Therone Jamison. in a chance meeting Audrey realizes Serena is having marriage troubles & gives her her own business card. As Audrey celebrates with her partners, she finds Serena lunching with Daniel. Serena informs Audrey that she decided against hiring her, and she believes Daniel to be the more vicious of the two. Audrey confronts Daniel & accuses him of stealing Serena, but he refuses any such notion. Audrey takes Therone as her client. Both Thorne and Serena are ready to go to war over ownership of an Irish Castle that translated from its Gaelic name means 'Castle of Rock'. It is the only thing that either one of them wants out of the divorce, as both claims that it was their own decision to buy it. Daniel & Audrey are forced to go to Ireland for the depositions. They share a car & spend a night together when Daniel manages to wreck it. The next morning, the rivalry is back but none of the castle employees is of any use as they just agree with whatever Audrey or Daniel say. That night Audrey & Daniel get drunk & attend a local wedding & wake up married themselves. Frantic, Audrey wants the marriage annulled, she wants to tell the Priest that they didn't mean it. Daniel infers that he did. On their way back Audrey tells Daniel that she will file for divorce. He is not able to change her mind. The next day New York times carries a feature article on Daniel & Audrey wedding. They decide to act upon the appearance of their 'faux' marriage to save face. To create this effect, Daniel moves into Audrey's apartment. And as he settles in for a life of domestic bliss, he finds his bride attaching a lock to her bedroom door. Daniel & Audrey resume the Serena Therone case with judge Abramovitz presiding. While at home Daniel sees Audrey's notes & finds a receipt for $ 4 MM for a condo in Aspen Colorado. Back in court, Audrey questions Serena's alleged fidelity, but Daniel reveals that Thorne spent $4million dollars on a home for his Mistress in Aspen. Audrey is devastated, Daniel is ashamed that he stooped so low, Thorne is furious, and Serena is livid. Audrey demands a divorce. Daniel re-iterates that he loves Audrey. Sitting together, Sara comforts an emotional Audrey and reveals that it was in fact her that leaked the story to the press. In Judge Abramovitz's office, Audrey is informed that Thorne has absconded to Castle Rock. This is in breach of the court order concerning the property, and she gives her 48hours to bring him back. On arrival at the Castle, Audrey hears the screaming voices of Thorne and Serena, expecting the worst she bursts in on the pair, however she has interrupted them in the throes of passion. Now that all have been reunited Thorne calls out for his butler, Michael (David Kelly). Daniel and Audrey recognize Michael as the Priest from the anniversary festival, and it transpires that they were never really married. Daniel makes his excuses and swiftly leaves; Audrey starts to cry. Inspired by this new-found confidence in her love, Audrey, Serena, and Thorne jump into his Hummer 4x4 and chase after Daniel to catch him before he makes his return flight to NYC, unfortunately Audrey misses him, and books herself on the next flight back. Shopping in the Chinese store underneath his office a lonely Daniel makes his way through the aisle, he hears a forlorn Audrey making a plea to his heart, to fight to save their 'marriage'. As Daniel looks towards Audrey, we cut to Judge Abramovitz's office. Having reprimanded the pair for all the hassle they have caused her, she asks Daniel whether he takes Audrey to be his wife, she accepts, and he accepts her, they kiss. The happily married couple makes their way to a waiting limo, and once inside they consummate the union. The driver warns them that they better put up their windows, as there is a 79% chance of rain in the next half-hour; a piece of advice he freely gives, as like Audrey, he is also an avid viewer of the weather channel. Taking this as a good sign Audrey and Daniel start to laugh, as together, they could weather any storm.

Meg is a high school senior living in the Dayton, Ohio area. She uses writing as an outlet for her troubled home life, having been abandoned by her father and now neglected by her mother Diane, whose busy work schedule leaves Meg as the babysitter for her younger sister, Lily. The girls' father does not pay child support, causing financial strain for the family. After Meg reads aloud a poem (titled "Blue Car") in her English class, her teacher, Mr. Auster, recognizes her talent and assumes the role of a mentor and father figure for her. He encourages Meg to enter a local poetry competition, which she ends up winning. Mr. Auster recommends she next compete at the national competition in Florida during spring break. Meg's home life worsens when Lily displays increasingly worrying emotional behavior; she cuts herself, refuses to eat, and speaks about becoming an angel. After being checked into the psychiatric ward of a hospital, Lily kills herself by jumping out of an open window as she tries to "fly". A distraught Meg finds solace in Mr. Auster, who reveals he lost a son. During their one-on-one poetry tutoring, she learns he is also writing a novel. When Diane says she does not have the money to pay for her daughter's Florida trip, Meg resorts to stealing. This results in Meg getting fired from her after-school job and her moving out to stay with her friend, Georgia. At Georgia's place, Meg becomes acquainted with Georgia's older brother, Pat. When she tells Pat she's trying to find a way to get to Florida, he offers her a way to make money by stealing prescription drugs. Meg takes up the offer and steals from a pharmacy for him. The following day, Meg discovers that Pat has skipped town with the money. Meg ends up taking a bus by herself to Florida and sleeps on the beach. On the day before the competition, she spots Mr. Auster with his family relaxing near the water. When she walks over to say hi, his wife Delia invites her to join them. When Mr. Auster is not paying attention, Delia makes a comment to Meg that hints that their marriage is troubled. Later, Mr. Auster walks alone with Meg on the beach and kisses her. They go to a hotel room, where Meg reluctantly has sex with Mr. Auster. He stops after realizing that she is not comfortable with the situation. Meg learns that Mr. Auster has not written a novel at all, and that it was all just a ruse to impress her. At the competition the following day, Meg leaves her "Blue Car" poem on her chair when she is called to the mic. She recites a new poem in which she subtly denounces Mr. Auster for manipulating her and abusing his authority. In the audience, Mr. Auster and his wife look visibly uncomfortable. After finishing her reading, Meg leaves the auditorium, and, later on the beach alone, she throws the old poem into the water. Meg returns to Ohio and goes to Diane's apartment, where she has an emotional reconciliation with her mother. Diane leaves Meg a box containing old wedding photos of her and Meg's father. The next day, Meg, who is now going to live with her father, gets into a blue car with him and they drive off.

In 1880, in Big Whiskey, Wyoming, a group of prostitutes led by Strawberry Alice (Frances Fisher), offers a $1,000 reward to whoever can kill Quick Mike (David Mucci) and "Davey-Boy" Bunting (Rob Campbell). Quick Mike slashed prostitute Delilah Fitzgerald's (Anna Levine) face multiple times with a knife, permanently disfiguring her after she laughs at his small penis. The prostitutes wanted the sheriff to hang Quick Mike for his crime. As punishment, Sheriff "Little Bill" Daggett orders Mike and his associate who was with him at the brothel, Davey Bunting, to turn over seven of their ponies to Delilah's employer, Skinny DuBois (Anthony James), for his loss of revenue. Little Bill even refuses to whip the culprits. Outraged, the prostitutes offer a $1,000 bounty for the cowboys' deaths. Each of the women contributes from their savings to come up with the rewards pot. This upsets the local sheriff, Little Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman), a former gunfighter and now an obsessive keeper of the peace who does not allow guns or criminals in his town. Little Bill had given the two men leniency, despite their crime. In Hodgeman County, Kansas, the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett), a boastful young man, visits the pig farm of William Munny (Clint Eastwood), seeking to recruit him to kill the cowboys. The Kid claims to be an experienced bounty hunter looking for help pursuing the cowboys. In his youth, Munny was a bandit who was notorious for being a vicious, cold-blooded murderer, but he is now a repentant widower raising two children and has sworn off alcohol. Munny's wife died of smallpox in 1878. The Kid says that the cowboys slashed a lady's face, and cut her eyes and ears out, and even her nipples. The Kid offers a 50-50 partnership. Though Munny initially refuses to help with the assassination, his farm is failing, putting his children's future in jeopardy. Munny is getting old and can no longer put up with the rigors of farm work, while his kids are still too young to be able to manage everything by themselves. Munny reconsiders a few days later and sets off to catch up with the Kid whom he discovers, is severely near-sighted. On his way, Munny recruits Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman), another retired gunfighter who reluctantly leaves his wife (Cherrilene Cardinal) to go along. Back in Big Whiskey, the bounty hunters start arriving into town, giving hope to Alice and the other prostitutes. Meanwhile, Quick Mike and Bunting make their payment of 7 ponies to Skinny DuBois. British-born gunfighter "English" Bob (Richard Harris), an old acquaintance and rival of Little Bill's, seeks the bounty. He arrives in town with his biographer W. W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek), who naively believes in Bob's tall tales. Enforcing the town's anti-gun law, Little Bill, with his deputies, disarm Bob, and Bill beats him savagely, hoping to set an example for other would-be assassins. The next morning Bob is ejected from town. Bob, humiliated, is banished from town the next morning, but Beauchamp stays out of a fascination with the sheriff, who debunks many of the romantic notions Beauchamp has about the Wild West. Little Bill explains to Beauchamp that the best attribute for a gunslinger is to be cool-headed under fire rather than to have the quickest draw, and to always kill the best shooter first. Munny, Logan and the Kid arrive later amid a rainstorm and go to the saloon/whorehouse to discover the cowboys' location. Munny has a bad fever after riding in the rain and is sitting alone in the saloon when Little Bill and his deputies arrive to confront him. Little Bill has no idea who Munny is, and after finding a pistol on him he beats him brutally and kicks him out onto the street. Logan and the Kid, upstairs getting "advances" on their payment from the prostitutes, escape out a back window. The three regroup at a barn outside of town, where they nurse Munny back to health. Three days later, they ambush a group of cowboys and kill Davey. After missing Davey and shooting his horse, Ned falters and Will shoots Davey instead. Although it becomes apparent that Logan and Munny no longer have much stomach for murder. Logan decides to return home while Munny and the Kid head to the cowboys' ranch, where the Kid ambushes Quick Mike in an outhouse and kills him. After they escape, a very distraught Kid confesses he had never killed anyone before and renounces the gunfighter lifestyle. When Little Sue (Tara Frederick) meets the two men to give them the reward, they learn that Logan was captured by Little Bill's men and tortured to death, but not before giving up the identities of his two accomplices. The Kid heads back to Kansas to deliver the reward money to Munny and Logan's families, while Munny drinks half a bottle of whiskey and heads into town to take revenge on Bill. Shocked by the news, Will begins drinking and demands the Kid's revolver. The Kid hands it over, saying that he no longer wants to be a killer, and Will sends him back to Kansas to distribute the reward. That night, Logan's corpse is displayed in a coffin outside the saloon. Inside, Little Bill has assembled a posse to pursue Munny and the Kid. Munny walks in alone and promptly kills Skinny Dubois (Anthony James), the saloon owner and pimp. After some tense dialogue, a gunfight ensues, leaving Bill wounded and several of his deputies dead. Beauchamp lingers briefly to ask how Will survived. Will replies that it was luck and scares him away. Munny orders everyone out before stopping Little Bill from reaching for his pistol. Little Bill tries and fails to take another shot at Will while lying on the floor, then bemoans his fate and curses Will, who shoots him dead. Will shouts threats as he mounts his horse and rides out of town. A closing title card states that Will's mother-in-law found his farm abandoned years later, Will having possibly moved to San Francisco with the children. She remained at a loss to understand why her daughter married such a notorious outlaw and murderer.
