She promises to leave him alone only if he gives her a ride. Later that night, she asks him to live with her throughout November on the promise that his life will change for the better. He turns her down saying that he has a girlfriend. Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is a New York City rare-book dealer motivated solely by financial gain. He appraises old book collections and guides owners on their strategy to monetize them. But then, Corso cheats the owners and buys the best books from them for cheap, as they have no clue about their real value. Wealthy book collector Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) hires Corso to compare his recently acquired copy of the book The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, by seventeenth-century author Aristide Torchia, to the other two known to be in existence. Torchia is alleged to have written the book in collaboration with the Devil, and only three copies survived when he and his works were burned for heresy in 1666. Balkan informs Corso that only one of the 3 copies is genuine and is reputedly a version whose author was the devil himself. The book contains nine engravings that, when correctly interpreted and the legends properly spoken, will summon the Devil. Balkan suspects that his book might be a forgery and asks Corso to travel to Europe (where the other 2 copies are located) to determine whether his is genuine and to acquire the others for Balkan - at any cost, or by any means. Balkan gives his own copy of the book to Corso. During his travels, Corso comes into contact with a mysterious woman ("The Girl") who appears to be following him. Balkan's copy of The Nine Gates had previously belonged to bibliophile Andrew Telfer, who committed suicide soon after selling the book to Balkan. Moreover, Telfer's widow Liana (Lena Olin) wants the book back, as Telfer originally bought the book for her. Liana tells Corso that Telfer acquired the book in Spain and is surprised that he sold it to Balkan, as the book was his most treasured possession. Corso returns home to find is ransacked after he found the Girl at the library keeping an eye on him. Corso gives the book to his business partner Bernie to hide the book. Bernie says that the book is worth at least$1 million. Liana later comes over to Corso's apartment and seduces him, hoping he will sell the book to her. After they have sex, and he refuses to sell, she attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Liana was shown to have a tattoo of a coiled snake on her thigh, similar to the coiled snake figure on the front page of the book. The next day, Corso goes to a bookseller who is Corso's business partner and rare-book shop owner, Bernie (James Russo), whom Corso had asked to hide the book. Corso finds Bernie murdered and his corpse is posed to reflect one of the engravings in The Nine Gates, which, as in the image of The Hanged Man Tarot card, shows a man suspended by one foot upside down. Corso retrieves the book. Corso tries to back out of his deal with Balkan, but he refuses and asks Corso to proceed as planned. Corso travels to Toledo, Spain, to talk with the Ceniza brothers (Jose Lopez Rodero), book restorers who owned Balkan's copy before the Telfers. They say that while Telfer paid for the book, it was Liana who made him buy it. They point out to him three of the book's engravings signed "LCF", which, with their prompting, Corso understands means that Lucifer himself designed and cut them. The two show him that, of the book's nine engravings, only six are signed "AT"; the other three are signed "LCF" for Lucifer. Corso next goes by train to Sintra, Portugal, and visits Victor Fargas (Jack Taylor), whose copy of The Nine Gates Corso compares with Balkan's. To his surprise, Corso discovers that the signature "LCF" is found in three different engravings in the Fargas copy, which vary in detail from their counterparts in the Balkan copy. Corso relays his findings to Balkan and Balkan orders him to acquire Fargas' copy. The next morning a mysterious young woman The Girl (Emmanuelle Seigner), who has crossed paths with Corso since Balkan summoned him for this assignment, awakens Corso and leads him back to Fargas' house where he finds the old man murdered. Corso retrieves Fargas's burnt copy from the fireplace and finds the three "LCF" engravings torn out. In Paris, Corso visits the Baroness Kessler (Barbara Jefford), owner of the third copy of The Nine Gates. The Baroness initially refuses any contact with Corso once she realizes who his employer is. The Baroness says that after the death of Torchia, a secret society was formed to perpetuate his memory and to preserve the secrets of the book. The society was called the Silver Serpent. For centuries, they have met and worshiped the prince of Darkness, every year on the anniversary of Torchia's death. The Baroness says that Liana married Telfer for his money and restored her chateau. Corso is attacked while walking outside by Liana's bodyguard (Tony Amoni), only to be saved by The Girl who exhibits seemingly supernatural powers. Corso hides Balkan's book in his hotel room and asks the concierge of the hotel to locate Liana for him. Corso gets a call from Balkan and informs him about the last copy of the book with the Baroness. Corso returns and intrigues Kessler-a lifelong devotee of the study of the book-with evidence that the engravings differ across the three copies. Having gained access to Kessler's copy, he records three further differences. Corso finds that three different engravings in his copy are signed "LCF", and the engravings signed this way have subtle differences from those signed "AT". Corso is attacked, and the Baroness is strangled to death and her library set on fire. Corso returns to his hotel and discovers Balkan's copy is missing. Now believing that each copy of The Nine Gates is genuine, Corso suspects that the secret is a combination of the "LCF" versions of each of the nine engravings, distributed across all three copies of the book. Corso finds that Liana stole Balkan's copy from Corso's hotel room. He informs Balkan about the same. The Girl and Corso track Liana to her family's ancestral manor where a Satanic cult are conducting a ritual using Balkan's book. Balkan suddenly interrupts the ceremony, kills Liana, takes the engraving pages and his own intact copy, then flees. Corso abandons the Girl, presuming she was working for Balkan, and pursues Balkan but loses him when his car breaks down. Corso finds a clue in Kessler's belongings that directs him to a remote castle. Corso pursues Balkan to a remote castle, which was depicted in one of the engravings, and in a postcard that Corso found in Kessler's copy and finds Balkan preparing to open the nine gates. After a struggle, Balkan manages to trap Corso in a hole in the floor, thus immobilizing him and allowing Balkan to perform his summoning ritual unmolested-but with Corso as a 'witness'. Balkan recites a series of phrases related to each of the nine engravings, then douses the floor and himself with gasoline and sets it alight, believing himself immune to the flames. Balkan's invocation, however, appears to fail, and Balkan begins screaming in agony as his body starts to burn. Corso frees himself and, with Balkan engulfed in flames, puts Balkan out of his agony with a shot and escapes the fire. Sitting in Balkan's car, Corso is startled by the Girl, and she kisses him. The two are then shown having passionate sex on the ground while back-lit by the burning castle. The Girl's face and eyes seem to change as she writhes astride Corso in a state of crazed bliss. She tells him that Balkan failed because the ninth engraving Balkan had used was a forgery. When they stop for gasoline she vanishes but leaves Corso a note sending him to the Ceniza brothers. At their shop, Corso finds they have vanished, and the shop is being cleaned out. As workmen remove a large bookcase, a dust-covered paper floats down from the top. This is the authentic engraving, which depicts a woman who resembles the Girl that she is the daughter of Satan and that she is pregnant with his child. Corso, now with all nine authentic engravings in his possession, returns to the castle. The gates open on their own and emit a powerful bright light as Corso walks through, taking the journey through the Ninth Gate.

Austrian research geneticist Dr. Alex Hesse (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his OB/GYN colleague Dr. Larry (Danny DeVito) Arbogast invent a fertility drug, "Expectane", designed to reduce the chances of a miscarriage. Alex says that the female body is miscarriage prone due to the body's natural tendency to reject foreign matter. The body mistakes the embryo as unwanted foreign substance and creates antibodies to fight and reject it. Expectane neutralizes the antibodies and leads to successful embryo attachment. The drug has been tested on a chimpanzee, who has had a history of miscarriages and is now 7 months pregnant due to her treatment with Expectane. Head of the University review board Noah Banes (Frank Langella) informs Larry that the FDA rejected the proposed drug after Alex and Larry's presentation. With the drug unapproved by the FDA, the colleagues are unable to test the drug and cannot continue their research. Banes asks Alex to empty his lab, which he refuses to do. Larry begs Banes that he has invested $300,000 in the development of the drug and asks for some slack. Banes has recruited geneticist Dr. Diana Reddin (Emma Thompson) and her ovum Cryogenics project to the University. Diana will set up her lab where Alex is resident currently. Larry notices that Diana carries an entire selection of frozen eggs for her experiments. Louise (Aida Turturro) is the receptionist at Larry's clinic. Alex plans to start over in Europe as he has no lab, no funding or any future in the USA. Larry suggests they can still perform the experiment, with Canadian firm Lyndon Pharmaceutical offering to fund them provided they find a volunteer. Alex questions the likelihood of a pregnant woman taking an unapproved drug, but Larry suggests omitting the volunteer's gender. Larry says that Moe the chimp went 5 months pregnant when put on Expectane. Larry convinces Alex to impregnate himself with an ovum code-named "Junior". Larry says that Alex only needs to carry the embryo through the first trimester, which will give their data and then they will terminate the pregnancy. Larry argues that many other scientists have tested their own vaccines and drugs on themselves. Larry promises that he can find an egg, and then proceeds to steal one frozen egg from Diana's Cryogenic container. The egg was labeled "Junior" by Diana. Larry fertilizes the egg using Alex's sperm and injects the egg into Alex's abdomen in the Peritoneal cavity. Larry lies to Alex that the egg belongs to a colleague, who got it through an anonymous harvest. That night, Alex dreams his potential offspring has his own face. Alex is staying with Larry at his house, during the protocol. The urine test indicates that Alex is pregnant. He is to take Expectane 6 times a day. As weeks go by, he complains to Larry of sore nipples, morning sickness, cramps, chats incessantly about walks, massages, and naps. Diana had shared her lab space with Alex as she felt bad for kicking him out. Alex started bonding with Diana and shared his physical discomfort with her. Contemplating fatherhood after watching television commercials, Alex breaks down sobbing. Larry visits a maternity convention where Lyndon Pharmaceuticals executives are attending. Larry promises them results within a week, which Banes overhears. Bane suspects that Larry is conducting human experimentation without authorization. Alex and Diana also attend the conference and develop a mutual attraction towards each other. When the time comes for Alex to end the experiment and release the results to Lyndon Pharmaceutical, he continues taking the drug and decides to carry the pregnancy to term. Larry had told Alex to stop taking Expectane, which would disrupt the embryo and it would be reabsorbed naturally into his body. 10 weeks later, Larry notices Alex's growing belly and realizes that he is still pregnant. Initially annoyed, Larry agrees to keep it hidden. Alex develops a romantic relationship with Diana. Banes finds that Larry and Alex are still buying Expectane components through Diana. Banes confronts Alex and Larry and wants to know if they are coloring outside the lines. Banes goes up to Alex's room and finds a supply of Expectane and deduces that there is a pregnancy in the house. Banes takes a sample and has it tested. The sample has high dosage of estrogen and Progesterone, consistent with someone preparing to undergo a sex change operation. Banes realizes that Alex is pregnant. Larry takes Diana out to dinner. Diana mentions that she also experimented on herself when she froze her own egg and labeled it Junior. Alex returns home and confronts Larry that he stole the egg from Diana and that it is her own egg. When Angela comes over to Larry's, she sees Larry touching Alex's belly and believes they are gay partners. Alex reveals his pregnancy to Angela (Pamela Reed), who also happens to be pregnant by Aerosmith's personal trainer. Larry is Angela's attending physician as per her request. Alex meets Diana at her lab and tells her the truth. Diana is stunned and angry when it is revealed that the "Junior" ovum is hers, and Banes attempts to take credit for the experiment. Banes says that the University has a contract with Alex, and any commercial applications of Alex's experiment are the property of the University. Alex manages to escape. Disguised as a woman, Alex hides in a retreat for expectant mothers, blaming his masculine appearance on Anabolic steroid use. Diana visits, telling him it does not matter who is pregnant because he is the father, and she is the mother. Larry reveals the experiment's data to Lyndon Pharmaceutical, who agree to partner with them. Alex experiences abdominal pain from the start of labor, calling for Larry and Diana. As Diana rushes to the resort, Larry tells a fellow doctor to prepare for an emergency c-section. A hospital staffer overhears and alerts Banes, who summons the media and the University Dean, hoping to take credit for the world's first pregnant man. Warned by a colleague, Larry creates a decoy for Alex to allow a private c-section. When Larry arrives, the news media only see the pregnant Angela, discrediting Banes, who is fired by the Dean. Diana and Alex enter the hospital by the fire escape, and he has an emergency c-section. Sent to keep Angela company in the waiting room, Diana finds her in labor and becomes her delivery coach. Alex gives birth to a healthy baby girl, and Larry announces the arrival to Diana, who is assisting Angela with contractions. Diana leaves Angela with Larry and rushes to see the baby, whom she and Alex name Junior. Larry delivers Angela's child, and they reconcile to raise the boy, Jake, as their own. One year later, the families all go on vacation together and celebrate the birthdays of Junior and Jake. Diana is pregnant with their second child, and Angela mentions wanting another baby but not wishing to endure pregnancy again; they all try to convince a reluctant Larry to carry the child.

Robin Shea (Rebecca De Mornay) is a convict in a New Mexico prison. She manages to escape, but mistakenly hitches a ride in the limo of James Tiernan (Frank Langella), a politician who was visiting the prison as part of his campaign for governor. He returns her to the prison in secret. While changing back into prison clothes, Robin meets Billy Moran (Vincent Spano) a carpenter and handyman who is doing work in the compound under supervision that is supposed to keep him isolated from the female inmates. Billy helps Robin temporarily hide from the guards, and they have sex. Robin learns who James Tiernan is from a political ad on television where he talks about his strong stance on prison issues. She manages to call him at his campaign headquarters, asking for help on her upcoming parole hearing. James gives her advice, one suggestion of which is that she get married. Robin approaches Billy, offering him five thousand dollars to marry her for a year so she can get out of prison. Billy accepts, they are married and Robin is released not long after. Robin moves in with Billy, who also lives with his older brother Peter (Donovan Leitch) and Billy's unruly six-year-old son Timmy (Jamie McEnnan). Initially there is a clash of personalities due to the contrast between Billy's serious demeanor and Robin's wild-child nature. Billy is interested in having a real relationship with Robin, who instead insists that their marriage is just an arrangement, and that she wants to focus on her musical career. Robin starts up a band, which Peter joins, and also meets up again with James, who uses Robin as a poster child for successful prison reform on his campaign. Robin spends more time with the family, getting close to Peter and Timmy, which upsets Billy. Robin suggests they see other people, which Billy accepts. Billy has sex with another woman, while Robin has sex with James, who is married. Afterward the pair confront each other jealously over their being with other people. The next morning Robin reconciles with Billy, helping him out when his jeep breaks down and spending time with him at work restoring an old museum. They have sex in Billy's workshop, and are interrupted by a group of tourists, who take pictures of the pair. At first Robin's public indencency is hushed up due to her status as James' poster child, but when James sees the pictures he is jealous, and orders that Robin's parole be revoked. The police come for Robin when she is performing with her band at a bar. Robin flees to James' house for help, but he turns her away. Robin goes back to Billy's house, where he has packed up her things and prepared money for her. Billy promises to help her no matter what she wants to do, and Robin decides she's tired of running. Billy and Robin secretly crash James' political dinner. Robin takes to the stage with her band, praising James' assistance in "helping" her. Her passionate performance earns them a standing ovation, which in turn helps James' image. James agrees to help Robin, and she no longer has to go back to prison. Robin and Billy return home together, happily married.

On the war-torn planet Eternia, the evil warlord Skeletor (Frank Langella) has seized control of Castle Grayskull, the center of power in the universe. His army has scattered the remaining Eternian defenders and Skeletor has captured the Sorceress of Grayskull (Christina Pickles), imprisoning her within a power-draining field and planning to seize power over the entire universe by the next moon-rise. Skeletor's archenemies - the warrior leader He-Man (Dolph Lundgren), veteran soldier Man-At-Arms (Jon Cypher) and Man-At-Arms' daughter Teela (Chelsea Field) - rescue the Thenorian locksmith Gwildor (Billy Barty) from Skeletor's troopers. Gwildor reveals that Skeletor has acquired his invention: a "Cosmic Key" that can open a portal to anywhere by utilizing musical notes. The device was stolen by Skeletor's second-in-command, Evil-Lyn (Meg Foster), allowing Skeletor to breach Castle Grayskull. With Gwildor's remaining prototype of the Key in hand, He-Man and his friends travel to the Castle. They attempt to free the Sorceress but are overwhelmed by Skeletor's army and forced to flee through a hastily opened portal via Gwildor's Cosmic Key, transporting them to Earth. The Key is lost upon their arrival and discovered by two California teenagers - orphaned high school girl Julie Winston (Courteney Cox) and her boyfriend Kevin Corrigan (Robert Duncan McNeill). While experimenting with the device, they accidentally transmit a signal that allows Evil-Lyn to track it. She then sends Skeletor's henchmen Saurod (Pons Maar), Blade (Anthony De Longis), Beast Man (Tony Carroll) and Karg (Robert Towers) to recover it. Kevin, an aspiring musician, believes the Key to be a new Japanese synthesizer and takes it to a music store run by his friend Charlie (Barry Livingston). Back at the school, Skeletor's henchmen arrive through a portal and chase Julie until she is rescued by He-Man, who is in search of the Key. The henchmen retreat to Grayskull where, incensed by their failure, Skeletor kills Saurod and sends the others back to Earth, with a larger force under Evil-Lyn's command. Meanwhile He-Man explains the whole situation to Julie. He says that their only hope to defeat Skeletor is to find the Cosmic Key. Back on Earth, Kevin returns to the school to find police investigating the damage caused by Skeletor's men, and no sign of Julie. Kevin is then taken to Julie's house by Lubic (James Tolkan), a detective investigating the disturbance. They find no trace of her at the house, but Lubic is suspicious of the Cosmic Key, which he suspects Kevin may have stolen. Lubic confiscates the Key and leaves for Charlie's music store to verify Kevin's story. Immediately afterward, Evil-Lyn and her team break into the house and interrogate Kevin regarding the Key's location using a mind-control collar, before pursuing Lubic. Julie and the Eternians arrive and release Kevin from the collar, then pursue Lubic and the Key. They arrive at Charlie's store, but Skeletor's forces catch up with them and a pitched battle ensues. Evil-Lyn recovers the Key and summons Skeletor to Earth. Lubic escapes to gather extra forces to return and arrest everyone. Skeletor continues to pursue He-Man and his friends. He-Man recovers the Key from Evil-Lyn. Skeletor's forces capture the Eternians and Julie is wounded by Skeletor's lightning blast, which simultaneously erases the memory storage of Gwildor's Key, which held the home location. He-Man surrenders to save his comrades and is returned to Eternia as Skeletor's slave. Skeletor attempts to torture He-Man into submission to make his victory complete, but He-Man refuses to yield. The moment arrives for Skeletor to receive the power of the cosmos and declare himself the Master of the Universe. He uses his new powers to attempt to force He-Man to kneel. Back on Earth, Gwildor repairs the Cosmic Key and Kevin re-creates the tones necessary to create a gateway to Eternia. The group, including Lubic as he attempts to arrest them, are transported to Castle Grayskull, where they begin battling Skeletor's forces. Resenting that Skeletor absorbed the power of the Universe without sharing it with her, Evil-Lyn deserts him along with his other henchmen. He-Man retrieves the Sword of Grayskull and he and Skeletor begin a final battle, in which he shatters Skeletor's staff, restoring him to his normal state. He-Man offers mercy, but Skeletor draws a concealed sword and attempts to kill He-Man. As Skeletor lunges at him, He-Man knocks Skeletor into a vast pit below. The freed Sorceress heals Julie and Gwildor opens a portal to send the Earthlings home. Hailed as a hero for his bravery, Lubic decides to remain on Eternia. Back on Earth, Julie awakens on the morning of her parents' deaths in a plane crash. Realizing the Key has transported her back in time, she prevents her parents from taking the ill-fated flight by taking their keys, then runs outside to find Kevin. He confirms that their experiences were real, producing a souvenir from Eternia: a small blue sphere containing a scene of He-Man in front of Castle Grayskull with his sword raised above his head. In a post-credits scene, Skeletor's head emerges from the water at the bottom of the pit, saying "I'll be back!"

Egyptologist Erica Baron finds more than she bargained for during her long-planned trip to The Land of the Pharoahs: murder, theft, betrayal, love, and a mummy's curse. Egyptologist Erica Baron (Lesley-Anne Down) is researching for a paper on Mernephtah, chief architect to Pharaoh Seti I. She meets with unscrupulous art dealer Abdu-Hamdi (John Gielgud) and witnesses him being threatened by black-market dealer Stephanos Markoulis (John Rhys-Davies). Abdu-Hamdi shows Erica a statue of Seti I that may prove there is a secret burial chamber filled with treasures within Seti's tomb. Erica witnesses Abdu-Hamdi being murdered by unidentified men and is rescued by French journalist Yvon Mageot (Maurice Ronet). He is interested in Erica's research, but his motives remain unclear. Erica then meets Dr. Akmed Khazzan (Frank Langella), who is head of the antiquities division for the government, and is also interested to know what Erica has learned about a secret chamber. He provides her a bodyguard who is promptly murdered, possibly by the same people who murdered Abdu-Hamdi. Despite continued threats from Markoulis and continued hindrance from Mageot, Erica is determined to learn all she can, no matter the risk. She also finds herself falling for Khazzan, which leads her further into ancient mysteries and intrigue.

In Whitby, England in 1913, Count Dracula (Frank Langella) arrives from Transylvania through the sailing ship Demeter one stormy night. Sickly Mina Van Helsing (Jan Francis), who is visiting her dear friend Lucy Seward (Kate Nelligan), discovers Dracula's body after his ship has run aground. The Count visits Mina and her friends at the household of Lucy's father, Dr. Jack Seward (Donald Pleasance), whose clifftop mansion also serves as the local asylum. At dinner, he proves to be a charming guest and leaves a strong impression on the hosts, especially Lucy. Less charmed by this handsome Romanian count is Jonathan Harker (Trevor Eve), Lucy's fiance. Later that night, while Lucy and Jonathan are having a secret rendezvous, Dracula reveals his true nature as he descends upon Mina to drink her blood. The following morning, Lucy suddenly finds Mina awake in bed, struggling for breath. Powerless, she watches her dear friend die, only to finds severe wounds on her throat. Lucy blames herself for Mina's untimely death, as she had leave her alone while she remained bedridden. At a loss for the cause of death, Dr. Seward calls for Mina's father, Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Lord Laurence Olivier), who suspects what may have killed his daughter: a vampire. Moreover, he begins to worry about what fate his seemingly dead daughter may now have since her encounter with the creature. Seward and Van Helsing investigate their suspicions and discover a roughly clawed opening within Mina's coffin which lead to the local mines. It is there that they encounter the ghastly form of an undead Mina and it is up to the distraught Van Helsing to destroy what remains of her daughter. Meanwhile, Lucy has been summoned to Carfax Abbey, Count Dracula's new home, and she soon reveals herself to be in love with this foreign prince and openly offer herself as his bride. After a surreal wedding night sequence, like Mina before her, Lucy is now deadly infected by Dracula's blood. However, the two doctors manage to give Lucy a blood transfusion to help prevent her vampirism, but nothing can prevent the inevitable now. Now assisted by Jonathan, the elderly doctors realize that the only way to defeat Dracula (and save Lucy) is by destroying him. They manage to locate his coffin within the grounds of Carfax Abbey, but the vampire is waiting for them. Despite this being daylight, Count Dracula is still a very powerful adversary. Dracula escapes their attempts to kill him and bursts into the asylum to free the captive Lucy. While there, he scolds his slave, Milo Renfield (Tony Haygarth), for warning the others about him. Renfield apologizes and pleads for his life, but Dracula kills him by breaking his neck. Dracula now makes preparations for him and Lucy to return to Transylvania. Harker and Van Helsing manage to get onboard a ship carrying Dracula and Lucy cargo bound for Romania. Below decks, Harker and Van Helsing find Dracula and Lucy sleeping together in the coffin. Van Helsing attempts to stake Dracula, but Lucy protests, waking Dracula. In the struggle, Van Helsing is fatally wounded by Dracula as he is impaled with the stake intended for the vampire. Dracula now turns his attention to Harker. Van Helsing uses his remaining strength to throw a hook attached to a rope, tied to the ship's rigging, into Dracula's back. Harker seizes his chance and hoists up the count through the cargo hold to the top of the ship's rigging, where he dies a painful death when the solar rays burn his body. Van Helsing dies from his deadly wounds. Lucy is now apparently herself again, and Harker comforts her. Lucy smiles as she notices Dracula's cape blow away into the horizon, hinting Dracula may have survived.
