Chuck had applied for the management trainee program at NBC, but he lies on his application form since 2000 people had applied for just 5 positions. He hooks up with a fellow Page Georgia (Jennifer Hall) and she gets pregnant. Thats when Chuck finds that he has been fired. Turns out Georgia was just late on her period. Chuck moves back to Philadelphia and becomes Dick Clark's personal assistant on American Bandstand in 1961. He hooks up with Debbie (Maggie Gyllenhaal), an ABC executive, as he still chases fame and fortune. There, he writes the successful "Palisades Park" song and falls in love with a woman named Penny Pacino (Drew Barrymore), who is Debbie's roommate. It was with Penny that Chuck gets an idea for a dating show. Chuck is given permission to pitch the concept for The Dating Game at the American Broadcasting Company (ABC); he receives $7,500 to create a television pilot for the studio. However, ABC abandons The Dating Game in favor of Hootenanny. One night after Barris is kicked out of a bar for fighting, he is approached by CIA agent Jim Byrd (George Clooney), who recruits him as an assassin. Jim convinces Chuck by saying that he can teach him how to win at bar fights and he would earn good money as well. Chuck is mainly interested as he has heard stories that spies get to have sex with Eastern European girls. Chuck is put through basic CIA training. Chuck scores very highly at sniper shooting. Returning from a mission in Mexico in 1964 where he kills his first target, Chuck finds that Penny has become a hippie. Meanwhile, ABC decides to green-light The Dating Game. Initially, the network executives are appalled by the lewd comments made by the participants on the show and Chuck argues that the spontaneity of the show is part of its charm. Chuck is forced to hire Peter Jenks to ensure that participants keep it strictly PG-13 on the show. By 1967 the TV show is a phenomenon. Chuck gets a prime-time slot for the show. Jim suggests that the prize money can be more lucrative, and the winners can go on a supervised trip to Europe or Southeast Asia. And this could be Chuck's cover to go on CIA missions around the world. Chuck takes another mission for the CIA in Helsinki, Finland, where he meets gorgeous operative Patricia Watson (Julia Roberts). Chuck finds more success back home when The Newlywed Game goes on air. He and Penny decide to move to Los Angeles into a house, but Chuck is cautious of marriage, much to Penny's dismay. The journey in Barris' life is tied into the story of Thomas Carlyle's main character in Sartor Resartus, Teufelsdrockh, and this parallel is referred to throughout the film. In 1970, Jim convinces Chuck to go on another mission in West Berlin to assassinate communist Hans Colbert. There, Chuck is introduced to German American agent Keeler (Rutger Hauer) and is held captive by the KGB for some weeks when he infiltrates into East Germany. He is eventually traded to the US in exchange for one of the Russian agents. In 1976 Los Angeles, Chuck creates The Gong Show and becomes even more famous as its host. He is also criticized for the decline of quality television. Meanwhile, in 1979 Keeler is murdered (although it is reported as a suicide), and Jim warns Chuck of a mole in the agency. Chuck's TV shows are canceled due to poor ratings and his relationship with Penny becomes complex. One night, Chuck finds Jim sitting atop the diving board of his backyard pool. Jim reveals to Chuck why he "fit the profile" for the CIA's recruitment policy of assassins. Jim cites details from Chuck's early childhood which seem to predestine him to become a killer. During the conversation Jim mysteriously dies, which leads to Chuck becoming traumatized with past reflections of his CIA and television career. After almost having a nervous breakdown on his own show, Chuck shuts himself away in a New York City hotel. Penny manages to find him there in 1981 but tries in vain to convince him to return to California to get married. Chuck still refuses. Chuck finally leaves his room and confronts Patricia in Boston. There, he finds that she is the mole Jim warned him about. Chuck kills Patricia and begins to write his autobiography, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. He finally decides to marry Penny. After the ceremony, he confesses to her his double life as a CIA agent and assassin, but she merely laughs, assuming he is making a joke, and he decides not to correct her. In 2002, he prepares for an interview for the film adaptation of his autobiography.

Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney), a suave, fast-taking convict, escapes from incarceration at a chain gang in rural Mississippi in 1937 during the Great Depression. He is chained to two other prisoners, slow-witted Delmar (Tim Blake Neslon) and hot-tempered Pete (John Turturro), so the three must escape together. Everett convinces them that he has hidden $1.2 million after robbing an armored car, and promises to split it with them. They hitch a ride with an elderly blind man on a railway handcar, and he foretells that they will indeed find a treasure, though it may not be the one they seek. They travel on foot to visit Pete's cousin, Washington Hogwallop, who removes their shackles, gives them new clothes, and allows them to sleep in his barn for the night. However, the trio is awakened by the authorities, led by the partly-blinded World War I veteran Sheriff Cooley (Daniel Von Bargen) after Hogwallop had turned them in for the reward. The barn is set ablaze, but Everett, Pete, and Delmar escape with the help of Hogwallop's rambunctious young son (who drives them out of the fiery barn in a car). They continue their journey, and encounter a religious congregation in the midst of a mass baptism. Pete and Delmar are drawn in and are baptized as well, but Everett resists. They later pick up a hitchhiking young black guitarist, named Tommy Johnson (Chris Thomas King), who claims he sold his soul to the devil in exchange for musical talent. They hear that the nearby WEZY radio station pays people to sing into a can, so they pay a visit to the blind disc jockey (Stephen Root), and sing a version of "Man of Constant Sorrow" with Tommy accompanying them. Calling themselves 'The Soggy Bottom Boys', they are paid $40 in cash and leave satisfied. However, unbeknownst to them, their record becomes wildly popular around the state, with no one knowing the identity of the band. That night, the shadowy Sheriff Cooley and police track them down and find their car near their campsite. Everett, Pete, and Delmar part ways with Tommy as they escape. The next day, they meet famed robber George 'Babyface' Nelson (Michael Badalucco), on the run from police, and accompany him in robbing a bank. After spending the night at a campsite, Babyface gives them a share of the stolen loot and departs. The trio encounters three sirens: beautiful women washing clothes in the river, and are seduced by them. Delmar and Everett discover the next morning that Pete has disappeared, and Delmar believes the women had turned him into a toad (which was found in Pete's abandoned clothes). Carrying "Pete" in a shoe box, Delmar and Everett go to a restaurant for breakfast where they meet Big Dan Teague (John Goodman), a one-eyed Bible salesman. Thinking that their box contains money, Big Dan lures them to a field for an advanced tutorial on salesmanship. He violently beats the two men, kills the toad after finding no cash, and steals their car and what money they have on them. Bruised and defeated, Everett and Delmar arrive at Everett's hometown, where he attempts to speak to his estranged wife, Penny (Holly Hunter), mother of his seven daughters. He finds that Penny is engaged to Vernon T. Waldrip, the campaign manager for Homer Stokes (Wayne Duvall), who is running for governor against the grouchy elderly incumbent, Pappy O'Daniel (Charles Durning). Penny refuses to take Everett back, and was so ashamed of his arrest that she told their daughters he was hit by a train and killed. Rejected, Everett and Delmar attend a movie, where a prison chain gang is in the audience. Pete, it turns out, was turned into the police by the Sirens, and is once again in chains. In the theater, Pete advises his friends to abandon their quest, as it is a "bushwhack." That night, Everett and Delmar stealthily break him out of jail. Pete tearfully confesses that, after threatened with death by the authorities, he revealed their plans to find the armored car loot for Sheriff Cooley, whom they finally learn is the one who has been hunting them across the state. However, Everett reveals that he fabricated the story to entice Pete and Delmar to escape with him. Everett had truthfully been arrested for practicing law without a license, and was determined to escape when he heard his wife planned to remarry. If caught, the trio could face an additional 50 years in jail. An enraged Pete tackles Everett. The three stumble upon a Ku Klux Klan rally in a nearby field. Shocked, they see that Tommy Johnson has been captured and that the Klan is preparing to hang him. The trio disguise themselves as color guard members and attempt to rescue Tommy, but are confronted by Big Dan Teague, a member in attendance. The red-robed Grand Wizard, it so happens, is candidate for governor Homer Stokes. After a scuffle, Everett, Pete, and Delmar topple a huge fiery crucifix onto Big Dan, presumably killing him, and escape with Tommy. The four men arrive at a campaign dinner, disguised by long false beards. Pretending to be the hired band, they slip onstage and entertain (Delmar sings an impressive version of "In the Jailhouse Now") while Everett attempts to speak to Penny again. When the men launch into "Man of Constant Sorrow", they watch in awe as the entire audience rises to its feet and cheers, recognizing them as the elusive Soggy Bottom Boys. However, Homer Stokes arrives and tries to reveal them as the men who disrupted the lynch mob in performance of its duties. The townspeople are outraged at Homer's confessed racism, and literally ride him out on a rail. Everett, Pete, Delmar, and Tommy resume playing, and a delighted (and victorious) Pappy O'Daniel joins them onstage and grants them an official pardon. After the event, Penny takes Everett back, but demands that he return to their old cabin and retrieve her wedding ring. The four men depart quickly, as the cabin is in the valley that is due to be flooded the following day. They briefly see Babyface Nelson again, re-captured by police, but in extremely high spirits, happy at the thought of being executed in the electric chair. The men arrive at the cabin the next morning, but to their horror find that Sheriff Cooley and his posse have caught up with them and his men have already dug their graves. As the authorities loop nooses over a tree branch, Everett drops to his knees and prays that he might see his daughters again. At that moment, the valley is flooded. The cabin is destroyed, and Everett, Pete, Delmar, and Tommy surface on the newly-made lake. They retrieve the sought-after ring from a floating roll top desk, and return to town. Shortly afterwards, Everett is happily reunited with Penny and his children. The family is taking a walk through the town when Penny remarks that the ring Everett brought her is the wrong one. She firmly asserts to a frustrated Everett that he must find the original ring (now at the bottom of a lake). Their daughters sing the hymn Angel Band as they cross paths with the elderly handcar operator who had predicted Everett's fate.

Outside a church celebrating an Eastern Orthodox baptism in Pale, Bosnia, the Bosnian Finance Minister, a moderate pushing for peace in the ongoing Yugoslav Wars, is murdered. At a missile base in Kartaly (Chelyabinsk Oblast), Russia, ten nuclear warheads that belong to a SS-18 Satan ICBM are loaded onto a train for transport to a dismantling facility. However, Russian Army General Aleksandr Kodoroff (Aleksandr Baluev), along with a rogue Spetznaz unit, kills the soldiers on board while the train is on its way. The Spetznaz unit boards the train by jumping on to it from another train which was running on a parallel track. Kodoroff transfers nine warheads to this other train while they are running parallel to each other. Kodoroff then activates the timer on the remaining warhead and sends the transport on a collision course with a passenger train. Kodoroff hides his train inside a nearby tunnel to protect himself from the nuclear blast. First, the 2 trains collide and then a few minutes later. the 500-kiloton warhead eventually detonates, killing thousands of civilians and delaying an investigation of the accident. The detonation attracts the attention of the US government. Dr. Julia Kelly (Nicole Kidman), head of the NSC Nuclear Smuggling Group, believes that Chechen terrorists are behind the incident. Terry Hamilton (Gary Werntz) is the National Security Advisor and Appleton (Holt McCallany) is Julia's immediate boss. Julia tells Terry that the nuclear blast occurred 4.5 minutes after the trains collided (as captured by satellite imagery) and is 100% sure that a nuclear detonate cannot be triggered by a train collision. Which means that someone deliberately set off a nuclear explosion. Meanwhile, Kodoroff transfers the warheads from the train onto a waiting truck for transport through the Ural Mountains. The truck is disguised as a Red Cross vehicle as they are allowed to cross borders under the Russian nuclear protocol. Former US Army Ranger and Special Forces turned Military Intelligence Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Devoe (George Clooney) interrupts her briefing to suggest that the incident was staged to hide the hijacking of the warheads (satellite photos indicated people jumping off the passenger train before the collision, but nobody jumping off the warhead train as they were all dead). A functioning nuke is worth $200 million on the open market. Julia realizes that she does not know how many nuclear warheads were on the train. Russian nuclear command confirms that there were 10 nuclear warheads and a list of military personnel who were on the train. Devoe is shocked to see Kodoroff's name on the list as that would be like Ivanka Trump riding the subway. Kodoroff is deemed alive as intel confirms that someone has been calling his mistress in Helsinki, at the usual time that Kodoroff calls her daily. A call to Devoe's friend and Russian counterpart, FSB Colonel Dimitri Vertikoff (Armin Mueller-Stahl), adds reliability to his theory, and he is assigned as Kelly's military liaison. Kelly and Devoe secure information about the terrorists' hijacking operation through an Austrian trucking company that works as a front for the Russian Mafia. They meet Vertikoff in Vienna and assume identities to visit Shummaker (Alexander Strobele), who organizes the Russian's trucking. After Devoe tortures Shummaker for information (and takes information from his computer), he and Kelly leave the building and get in Vertikoff's car. They are chased by Shumaker's men, who kill Vertikoff while he is offering a bribe. Devoe shoots at the attackers and drives away but finds he and Kelly are being followed. Another chase ensues, followed by a crash, but Devoe and Kelly escape, after Devoe kills all the men involved in Vertikoff's death. Information from the trucking company says that the nukes are going to Iran via Azerbaijan. When US spy satellites place the truck in a traffic jam of refugees in Dagestan, Devoe uses a ruse to identify it. He calls Kodoroff directly, who was riding in the truck, and makes him believe that a missile his headed for his position. Kodoroff panics and moves the truck, which is picked up by American satellites. This information is passed on to Russian authorities in hopes of stopping the transfer to Iran. The Russian military stops Kodoroff at a roadblock, but he and his men kill the soldiers. Devoe leads an airborne Special Operations team from a U.S. base in Turkey to stop them. Denied entry into Russian airspace in Azerbaijan, one of the three Special Ops helicopters is shot down by a Russian missile, but the remaining two manage to locate Kodoroff's truck. Firing missiles which disable Kodoroff's truck, they then engage in a gunfight, killing Kodoroff and securing the warheads. However, interrogation of the group's surviving member, a U.S. educated Pakistani nuclear scientist Amir Taraki (Harsh Nayyar), reveals that one warhead had been sent off with an operative before the truck was intercepted. The scientist says that the last warhead is now mobile and fits inside a regular backpack. Julia knows that a mobile primary will still take out 10 city blocks and kill 100,000 people in a densely populated are with a yield of 1 to 2 KT. The information from the trucking company leads IFOR to a Sarajevo address. Inside is a video cassette of Dusan Gavric (Marcel Iures), a Bosnian who disclaims allegiance to any particular faction in the Yugoslav Wars, but blames other countries for supplying weapons to all sides in the conflict. Kelly's further analysis of the trucking company documents suggests that Gavric intends to bomb a meeting at the UN headquarters in NYC. The invoice had a code 44E, which Julia translates to 44th East, which is the address of the UN building in NYC. Gavric arrives in Manhattan with the Bosnian diplomatic delegation, having replaced the murdered Finance Minister. Gavric actually wants to avenge the death of his wife and daughter, who died in Sarajevo during a sniper attack. Julia orders the shutdown of all airports in the US, but Gravic makes it out as he was travelling on a diplomatic passport and smuggled the nuclear bomb in the same way. Julia tracks the Bosnian delegation's hotel, but Gravic had left by then. She knows that the backpack is leaking radiation and orders trackers on all streets. A copter picks up the radiation source. Gravic and his brother are later found by Devoe and Kelly. When his brother is killed by Devoe, a wounded and enraged Gavric flees into a parochial school. Devoe and Kelly confront Gavric, who commits suicide, knowing that the bomb is set to go off in minutes. With only seconds to spare, Dr. Kelly manages to remove part of the bomb's explosive lens shell and stop the primary explosion from establishing critical mass within the plutonium core. The primary explosives detonate, wrecking the church, as Devoe and Kelly dive out of a window. However, Kelly's efforts prevent it from causing a nuclear explosion. Kelly later is seen swimming laps in a pool. Devoe stops by and asks her out for a drink, which she accepts.
