Small-time crooks bungle a kidnapping attempt. Four men form a gang hoping to make a quick buck by kidnapping a rich girl for ransom. Being unprepared for unforeseen situations, they are forced to barge in and take shelter in a house and take the people in the house as hostages. Bad luck strikes them when they discover that the father of the kidnapped girl has flown out of the country the very same day. While awaiting his return the kidnappers are forced to take more and more people as hostages to keep their identity and plan under wraps. The hostages create a series of situations too complex for the inept kidnappers to handle. Siddharth/Sidhu (Abhishek Bachchan) comes to New Delhi to further his studies and stays with his sister Esha (Ayesha Jhulka) from Allahabad. Siddharth is forced to stay with Esha by his parents, but he doesn't like his brother-in-law Rajeev (Mukesh Rishi). It was an arranged marriage and the youngsters in the house didn't like an unimpressive Rajeev as a suitable match for Esha. Rajeev is a simple, bespectacled man and Esha is extremely beautiful. During their first meeting, Rajeev had heard Sidhu complain to his father that Rajeev is not a good match for Esha. Yet, Esha is happy with Rajeev and has never been given the opportunity to complain about anything. When Siddharth gets to Delhi, the unsaid tension continues between him and Rajeev. Rajeev gives his scooter to Siddharth for conveyance. Rajeev does say much to Sidhu as he is concerned that Sidhu will be offended. Sidhu refuses the scooter and says that he will take the bus. Siddharth's spoiled friend Ganesh (Vijay Raaz) trails behind him and arrives in Delhi later, after Ganesh was kicked out of the house by his father Ram Prasad Shastri (Aanjjan Srivastav) for being a total and useless bum. Ram Prasad laments that Ganesh was notorious from kindergarten through to college, and even now could not hold on to a job. Ganesh says that he is not interested in becoming a bookkeeper for Rs 20/day, as the job can be done by a simple calculator. Siddharth, through perceived destiny and chance, runs into Jhanvi (Bhumika Chawla) on a DTC bus. Siddharth falls in love with Jhanvi, who belongs to a conservative Haryanvi family. Sidhu and Jhanvi keep running into each other at different spots in the city, but Jhanvi manages to hide from Sidhu, leaving him confused. Eventually Sidhu figures out the route that Jhanvi takes to her college and waits for her. Jhanvi's elder brother Ganpat (Mahesh Manjrekar) is a head of the family who is very protective of his family, mainly his sister, after the loss of their parents. Ganpat has already cut the hand of a Romeo who dared to follow Jhanvi and gave her a love letter. He is very critical of inter cast marriages and metes out the same treatment to other boys who fall in love with girls of his community. Only Ganpat's uncle (Goga Kapoor) is able to control his limitless rage. Initially, Jhanvi brushes off Siddharth's constant attempts to be with her (in the bus, in the temple, at the bookstore or at the mall) in order to keep him safe from Ganpat. An encounter with the thugs (Ganpat sensed that some boy was harassing Jhanvi at college and send his goons) leads Jhanvi to encourage Siddharth to run. Sidhu instead rises to the challenge and fights off all the thugs when they attack him the next time around. Jhanvi warns Sidhu that he has made an enemy out of her brother Ganpat and tells Sidhu to return to Allahabad. Ganpat issues instructions to kill Siddharth, but he is up for the challenge and inflicts severe injuries on the goons who attack him. Siddharth and Jhanvi keep meeting with each other, hiding and running from Jhanvi's brother and his men, while Siddharth fights off any thugs that follow him and threaten to hurt him or his family. While Ganpat goes to threaten Esha and her husband Rajeev (Mukesh Rishi), Siddharth threatens him back viciously as he was one step ahead of him and planned to retaliate (though falsely) by killing Ganpat's family, excluding Jhanvi. Rajeev eventually sees Siddharth with Jhanvi and understands the entire matter. Ganpat's uncle tells Ganpat that they cannot afford another mistake against Sidhu as then people would stop fearing them. He tells Ganpat to bide his time and strike at the right moment. Jhanvi overhears this conversation and is ecstatic that someone forced his brother to take a step back, as this has never happened before. Till now Ganpat felt that Siddharth was chasing Jhanvi, but one of his men sees them together and Ganpat realizes that Jhanvi also loves Siddharth. Eventually, Ganpat decides to use his thugs to beat up a boy who was giving Siddharth a hard time in school, thus giving the impression to the principal of the school that Siddharth is a thug. Siddharth is suspended in return. Then they hit Esha with a van and frame her husband for him to lose his job all at the same time. Siddharth and Jhanvi agree they should elope and get married before she gets married off. Meanwhile, Ganesh constantly gets himself conned (his suitcase is stolen a few minutes after he arrives in Delhi and Sidhu's address and telephone number were in the suitcase) and goes through various harsh realities about life. In the end, Ganesh loses all his money, his watch, his clothes, and a kidney in his hope to meet his friend Siddharth. One day, Ganesh runs into Sidhu who was in a bus. But the bus drove away while Ganesh was describing his struggles to Sidhu. All his experiences end in the form of making Ganesh accidentally a "Petticoat Baba" (he was drafted into a porn movie without his will and had to escape in a petticoat when the police arrived), a saint who is believed by the people (not by Ganesh) to be living in the Himalayas for 300 years. In the climax, Siddharth hatches a plan to bait Ganpat and his men to the wrong area and marry Jhanvi with her remaining family members (Ganpat's wife (Shweta Menon)) who care for her and Siddharth. Ganpat gets wind of this plan (he sees them at a railway crossing) and tracks them down. The newlyweds now have to run from a mass number of thugs. This leads to a final battle which ends with a one-on-one fight with Siddharth and Ganpat. Siddharth wins and refuses to deal Ganpat the death blow, allowing him to live. Ganpat allows Jhanvi and Siddharth to leave, finally accepting Siddharth as his brother in-law. Siddharth and Jhanvi leave married.

But Prithvi manages to escape, be with his pregnant wife when she delivers their daughter Chandra, launch a sudden attack on Daku Panna, and make good his escape with his daughter, only to become an outlaw. Years later Chandra meets Suraj's son Akash and they fall in love, but when their fathers learn of their relationship, all restrictions are placed on them not to meet with each other, and their fathers hurry to arrange other marriages for them. Meanwhile, Panna Singh is still alive and willing to go to any length to kill Prithvi; meanwhile, Suraj is looking to close in on Prithvi to avenge his brother's death.

It was remade in Tamil as Dravidan and unofficially in Telugu as Ashoka Chakravarthy. The film was also dubbed in Hindi as Aaryan Mera Naam. Sharat Saxena played as the villain in all three versions. Devanarayanan (Mohanlal) is a Brahmin priest, who has to look after the entire family. He is in love with Shobana but her father Innocent is against their relationship. M.G Soman falsely accuses Mohanlal, of the theft of "Temple thiruvabharana" and forces him to leave his village in Kerala. He reaches Bombay where he gets shelter from Balan. K. Nair and family, who runs a tea shop. Monisha is the daughter of Balan. K. Nair. Some turn of events draws Mohanlal into the underworld and he becomes the trusted aide of the ageing don Kareem (Goga Kapoor). Ramya Krishnan, who is working for the same gang, gets closer to Mohanlal. Jhonny, from the same gang, joins hands together with rival don ( Sharat Saxena ) and Kareem's son and daughter-in-law, Monisha are killed leaving Kareem on a path towards religion and leaving all underworld business. Sharat Saxena plans to leave Bombay, but Mohanlal gets him arrested. Later he proves his innocence to his father. But that time Sharat Saxena killed Ramya Krishnan. In climax, Mohanlal killed the villain. —arun Mohanlal plays a Brahmin priest who is falsely accused of theft and forced to leave his village in Kerala. He moves to Bombay where he gets drawn into the underworld through an ageing don Kareem (Goga Kapoor). Some interesting comment initially on Brahmin priesthood in Kerala, but halfway through the film goes haywire. Beware of a completely unnecessary added plot in the last half hour. —Joyojeet Pal

After a betrayal, Karim is jailed while Don, released for surgery, abducts Anwar's son. Years later, a report on the now adult Allah Rakha's friend Rani exposes dark secrets. Karim Khan is employed as driver for a gangster named Don, who has an accident with his car, and asks Karim to take the blame for it for a hefty sum of cash, which Karim does so, and is imprisoned. But Don does not fulfill his promise, and as a result, Karim's wife, Razia, and new-born son are left destitute. Razia complains to Police Inspector Anwar, who arrests Don and holds him in prison, pending his trial in court. When Anwar finds out that his new-born son, Iqbal, is in need of a pace-maker, which he is unable to afford, he makes a compromise with Don, who lets him have one. Iqbal undergoes surgery and a pace-maker number 786, considered lucky in Islamic faith, is attached to his tiny heart. But Don and a prostitute by the name of Banoo have other plans for Anwar, which they carry out successfully, and abduct young Iqbal, who ends up growing on the streets as an orphan named Allah Rakha. Several years later, Allah Rakha has grown up, and is friendly with a prostitute named Rani, who happens to be the daughter of Banoo. Unfortunately Don does not keep up with his promise and as a result Karim's wife, Razia and son are left destitute which forces Razia to approach Don instead Don attempts to rape her when she resists her son is killed. Fortunately Inspector Anwar comes to her assistance and manages to arrest Don and placed him in a cell pending trial in a court of law. Meanwhile Inspector Anwar find out that his son, Iqbal needs a pace-maker to survive which only Don can provide so he decides to let go of Don in lieu of the pace-maker but Don is not satisfy with this and wants to extract further revenge from Anwar by hiring a prostitute, Banoo to ensnare Anwar which she does resulting in Anwar getting separated from his wife, advocate Salma and son, Iqbal. On the run from Don's men, Salma meets with an accident and loses her eye sight; Iqbal then gets into the hands of Razia but he remains temporary with her only to end up in the now release Karim Khan's hand who takes him as his son, closes in on Don killing him, hand over his son to Salma and then return to prison. Years later the boy grows up with Salma and is called 'Allah-Rakha" who is fascinated by a prostitute, Rani who also happens to be the daughter of Banoo. Unfortunately Allah Rakha gets framed in a trump up case and is remanded to prison. Kalpana (Rekha) is a young woman with a compulsive tendency to lie, often using her fabrications for what she perceives as benevolent outcomes, such as helping others in distress or facilitating positive changes in her family's life. She lives with her elder brother Kamal (Amol Palekar), a strict police inspector who frequently warns her that her deceptions will eventually lead to serious trouble, her younger sister Alpana (Prema Narayan), and their mother Shanti (Shammi) in a middle-class household. Despite Kamal's admonitions, Kalpana continues her pranks and white lies, believing they serve a greater good. For e.g. Kalpana tells Kamal that his best friend Ranjan has been injured in an accident. Kamal rushes to meet him and finds that his friend is perfectly alright. Kalpana told a lie as Kamal never made time in his busy life to meet his friends. Kalpana's friend wants to complete her education to get a job and contribute towards supporting her home. But she did not have money to pay her fees. So, Kalpana mortgaged her gold chain to pay for her fees and told Kamal that her chain had been stolen. Later, her friend gets the money from her brother and returns the chain, but meets Kamal instead, to whom she narrates the whole story. Kamal is investigating a local drug gang who is supplying drugs to the betel leave shops in the area. Kamal raids the establishment of Babulal (Goga Kapoor) who is a mafia don of the area. A man named Sunil runs away from the raid and turns out he is the brother of Dr Anil Gupta. Professor Puri is the family elder friend of Kamal and Kalpana. Professor Puri congratulates Kamal on his raid and wants to know how he knew where to conduct the raid. Kamal conveniently dodges the question and does not divulge his sources. Puri says that police work is too dangerous and encourages him to take on a different line of work as he has 2 sisters to marry and a widow mother to take care of. Kamal harbors feelings for their neighbor Seema (Supriya Pathak), a kind-heart woman living with her mother (Dina Pathak), but struggles to express them due to his reserved nature. Kalpana fabricates scenarios to bring them together, including staging chance encounters and exaggerating compliments to boost Kamal's confidence. Meanwhile, Alpana works at a travel agency and is secretly in love with her customer Rasiklal (Deven Verma), a humorous but somewhat bumbling man. However, their mother arranges Alpana's marriage to the respectable Dr. Anil Gupta (Raj Babbar) to secure her future. To sabotage this alliance and allow Alpana to pursue Rasiklal, Kalpana spreads false rumors claiming Dr. Gupta is untrustworthy and has a questionable character, successfully halting the wedding plans. Kalpana tells Shanti that she had once gone to Dr Anil for an ankle sprain and he ended up sexually harassing her. Dr Anil considered Seema as his sister and her mother as his own mother. Seema finds out about Kalpana's story and confronts Anil. Anil is adamant that nothing of the sort happened between them. Anil meets Seema's mother and tells her the same and says that Kalapana is lying as he has never even seen her. Kalpana is proven to be a liar when Seema's mother introduces Anil to Kalpana, and she does not recognize him. When Kamal confronts Kalpana, she says that Alpana loves someone else and hence she had to resort to lies to break her match with Dr Anil. Kamal meets Rasik, without telling him that he is Alpana's brother, and tells him to meet Alpana's family to ask for her hand in marriage. Kamal then tells Kalpana and Alpana that he has selected a boy to marry Alpana who is coming to meet her. Alpana is devastated and Kalpana decides to intervene. She gets a neighborhood kid and gets him to say that he is Alpana's son. Kalpana intercepts Rasik, without knowing that he is Alpana's Rasik and tells him that Alpana was married once earlier and had 2 kids from that union. Rasik runs away. When Alpana meets Rasik later that day, she realizes that it was Rasik who Kamal had selected as her groom. Kalpana sprains her ankle in a sports competition at college and ends up going to a clinic without realizing that it belongs to Anil. Ironically, when Kalpana meets Dr. Gupta to apologize for her slander, she develops genuine romantic feelings for him, leading to her own courtship filled with initial misunderstandings stemming from her earlier lies. Kalpana tells Anil that she only told a lie as Alpana loved another man. Kalpana organizes a picnic where she gets to spend time with Anil, Kamal with Seema and Rasik with Alpana. Later, Kalpana goes to meet Anil at his house and ends up meeting Sunil who she witnesses consuming drugs in his room. Kalpana confronts Sunil but then protects his secret in front of Anil. Sunil is embarrassed and decides to give up drugs. Complications escalate when Dr. Gupta's younger brother Sunil becomes entangled in a dangerous drug trafficking operation run by a criminal gang masquerading as academics, led by a figure posing as a professor. Puri (Madan Puri). Puri realizes that Sunil knows Kalpana and hence Kamal. He figures that Sunil is the mole in their organization due to which the police have been able to raid all their dens. Puri asks Babulal to eliminate Sunil and Kalpana. In a bid to save Kalpana, Sunil murders one of Babulal's henchmen. Kamal investigates the murder and arrests Sunil. Sunil (Rasik Dave) gets framed for a related murder, prompting Dr. Gupta to seek help from Kamal. Desperate to protect her newfound love and his family, Kalpana testifies in court with a fabricated story to exonerate Sunil. Kalpana says that on the day of the murder, Sunil was with her at a holiday resort for the entire day and night. Dr. Gupta believes the worst about Kalpana's chastity and her entire family turns against her. The situation worsens as the drug gang, seeking revenge for the interference, kidnaps Kalpana to silence her. Kamal leverages his police resources, with assistance from Dr. Gupta and Rasiklal, to track down and rescue Kalpana from the gang's hideout in a tense confrontation that exposes the criminals' operations. The rescue succeeds, leading to the arrest of the traffickers and Sunil's full vindication. As the dust settles, the accumulated lies are unraveled through honest confessions: Kalpana admits her deceptions were rooted in good intentions to support her loved ones, earning forgiveness from Kamal, who reflects on how her actions ultimately benefited everyone despite the chaos. The romantic entanglements resolve happily. Kamal marries Seema, Alpana weds Rasiklal, and Kalpana unites with Dr. Gupta, affirming that while truth is ideal, compassionate lies can sometimes pave the way for positive outcomes.

Zafar Khan is a wealthy businessman who can to any extent to marry Salma (Waheeda Rehman), who does not consent to the marriage because of Zafar`s underworld connections, and nor does her father. Soon, Zafar is arrested for various crimes and imprisoned for 10 years. On coming back, he sees that Salma is married to another man. After failing to convince Salma to divorce her husband, he sabotages the near-by dam and floods the area, killing Salma`s husband and separating her from her child Iqbal. Salma loses her memory to this shock and seeking opportunity, Zafar marries her. He also adopts a son from an orphanage and leaves him in the care of Salma. When his son succumbs to an overdose, Vijay starts to provide information to the police with the hope of ending all criminal activity by Jaggan and his men. He does succeed considerably, only to have his daughter, Rajni, abducted and held for ransom. Vijay agrees to testify against Jaggan only if the Police and Kishinchand locate Rajni first.
