Confederate POWs escape a Union camp and make for the Mexico border chased by Union troops with both parties oblivious to the fact that peace was declared. During the Civil War Confederate soldiers escape from a Union prison and head for the Mexican border. Along the way they kill a Union courier who has a message that the war is over. An officer accused of cowardice volunteers to bring back General Custers's body after Little Big Horn. Returning to Fort Lincoln, Captain Benson learns of Custer's defeat at the Little Big Horn. At the inquiry as Custer's Officers blame Custer for the defeat, Benson tries to defend him. But Benson was suspiciously absent at the time of the battle and is now despised by the troops. Marshal Calem Ware must face unpleasant facts about his past when he attempts to run a criminal gang out of town. Marshal Calem Ware (Randolph Scott) of Medicine Bend is tired and alone. Tired of killing to keep himself from being killed, and alone because of an unspoken past disappointment. After a disgruntled rancher and his sons rob at gun-point a rival rancher, the town forms a posse to go after the culprits but the ensuing events are muddled by unclear facts, false testimony, old scores, secrets, murder and stolen money. When the anxiously awaited posse returns with neither prisoners nor the stolen money, we learn in flashback what happened. Having been cheated by Sampson Drune, a rancher, his brother and his son have robbed him and fled. A posse led by Drune took off after them and although unwanted, the town's drunken Sheriff joins them. The Sheriff's influence on Jed, the adopted son of Drune, was the key to Jed later revealing who actually killed Drune, the robbers, and what happened to the money. —Maurice VanAuken <mvanauken@a1access.net> Complicated by flash-backs and flash-forwards, a posse of basically honest citizens track down a trio of outlaws responsible for robbing a wealthy New Mexico cattle baron, and decide to keep the recovered money for themselves. Honest Sheriff John Frazier (Broderick Crawford), an alcoholic, joins the posse and is mortally wounded during the foray and is unaware the cash has not been returned. A former spy moves to Arizona to join a gold robbery, but when he gets there decides that it's not for him and tries to change his life. Having been a spy for Quantrill's raiders during the Civil War, Jeff Travis thinks he's a wanted man and flees to Prescott, Arizona where he runs into Jules Mourret, who knows of his past. He takes a job on the stage line from which Mourret is trying to steal gold. When Mourret's men kill a friend of his, he sets out to get Mourret and his men. A Confederate Major and his troops are falsely led to believe the Civil War is not over, and become wanted men after they attack a Union Army wagon train in Nevada. In 1865, a troop of Confederate soldiers led by Major Matt Stewart attacks the wagon of gold escorted by Union cavalry and the soldiers are killed. The only wounded survivor says that the war ended one month ago, and the group decides to take the gold and meet their liaison that knew that the war ended but did not inform the troop. The harsh Rolph Bainter kills the greedy man and the soldiers flee in his wagon driven by Major Stewart. When they meet a posse chasing them, Stewart gives wrong information to misguide the group, but they have an accident with the wagon and lose the horses. They decide to stop a stagecoach and force the driver to transport them, but the posse returns and they are trapped in the station with the passenger. They realize that the men are not deputies and have no intention to bring them to justice but take the stolen gold.

After their service in the Civil War, four brothers go their separate ways, but later find themselves on opposite sides of a final showdown. After the Civil War four brothers who fought for the South head west. Yanks are building the Santa Fe Railroad and one of the brothers joins them. The other three still hold their hatred of the North and join up with those trying to stop the railroad's completion. He's good at his job and soon finds himself the number two man. His urges his three brothers - Terry, Tom and Clint - to join him, but they still can't quite accept that the South was defeated. Britt also meets the very attractive Judith Chandler whose husband was killed while serving in the Union army. Thompson) and Clint (John Archer), still fighting for a lost cause, join an outlaw gang robbing trains. A mysterious stranger crosses paths with an outlaw bank robber and a greedy rancher.

A wanted outlaw arrives in town to rob a bank that has already been held up! His past and his friendship with the sheriff land them both in trouble. Popular mailcoach driver Uncle Willie is in fact in league with the town's crooked banker. They plan to have the bank robbed after emptying it, and when Willie's choice for this doesn't show in time, he gets some local boys to do it. When his man does turn up he decides to stick around, as he is pals with the sheriff and also takes a shine to Willie's daughter Allison. This gives the bad men several new problems. —Jeremy Perkins {J-26} The bank of Red Valley, a small town in Utah, is robbed by a gang and three residents are murdered during the heist. However the corrupt banker Stanley Clanton has plotted the heist with the owner of the local stable, Uncle Willie McLeod, and the rancher Jack Lester and his gang. Sheriff Steve Upton is out of town investigating the holdup and is surprised by the wanted outlaw Cheyenne Rogers. The gunman that was hired by Stanley but arrived late for the heist, steals his horse and heads to Red Valley. In the stable, the daughter of Uncle Willie, Allison McLeod, recognizes the horse and rescues the sheriff from the wilderness. Meanwhile Cheyenne meets Countess Maletta and his friend Nitro Rankin. The Countess is the owner of the local saloon and suffers from unrequited love for him, and feels guilty for the crime life of Cheyenne that committed his first murder to protect her ranch. When Steve returns to Red Valley and sees Cheyenne, he feels happy to see his old friend and Allison falls in love with Cheyenne.
