Single mother Jean (Heather Locklear) moves every time she gets her heart broken by another guy, much to the dismay of her teenage daughter, Holly (Hilary Duff). The film stats with Holly making plans to go to her first ever school dance, which is a week away, when Jean's current boyfriend comes over and reveals he has been unfaithful to Jean and then she shoves a cake into his face. After the most recent heartbreak, Jean, Holly and her little sister, Zoe, move to Brooklyn where Holly makes friends with a girl named Amy. Holly devises a plan to invent a secret admirer for her mother, so she'll be happy and stop moving. Holly overhears her friend Amy's (Vanessa Lengies) uncle Ben (Chris Noth) ordering flowers for a woman, and decides to use his advice on women (which she acquires by telling him she needs help for a English paper on romantic leads and their modern counterparts). Following Ben's advice, she sends her mother orchids and other gifts and love notes, and is soon communicating with her mother as this fictitious admirer (who Holly names Ben) via the internet. As her mother becomes more interested, Holly has to find a photo of this admirer. She sends one of the real Ben, and then devises a reason why they can't meet in person, claiming he is opening a restaurant in China. While she is developing the online romance between her mother and fake Ben, and preventing her mother and the real Ben from meeting in person, she finds herself drawn to a cute, artistic boy in her class, Adam (Ben Feldman), but is unwilling to get close to anyone due to her history of being uprooted and having to say goodbye so often. As the charade continues, and as Holly spends more time with Ben while picking his brain for romance tips, she slowly begins to see qualities in Ben which make her believe he is her mother's 'perfect man.' Unfortunately there is no way her mother can ever meet the real Ben without Holly's plan being exposed. Holly asks help from Adam to disguise as Ben in the telephone and break up with Jean. But he fails, as he is revealed to be harboring feelings for Holly too, in effect telling Holly's mother the opposite of what is planned. Next day at school, Adam admits his feelings for Holly by kissing her. That night, Lenny (Mike O'Malley), a man who is infatuated with Jean, proposes to her and she replies with a 'maybe'. Holly, as an act of desperation, then disguises herself as Ben's secretary and arranges a meeting between Ben and her mom. Next day, when Holly mistakenly believes Ben is marrying someone else, she disrupts the wedding to tell Ben he should be with her mother - not noticing he is there because the bride was his dear friend and he was catering the wedding. An angry Ben follows her out and makes her tell him the full story. Holly then goes to the meeting place and admits the whole ruse to Jean, who seems to take it badly. Days pass by and Holly and her mom maintain a cold relationship, and Holly is insulted by her interpretation of Adam's drawing of "Princess Holly." Holly begs Jean for them to move again. Her mother is humiliated and wants to stay, but Holly tells her to leave this once for Holly. She says that she always has to move for her mom. Her mom can't argue with that so they start to pack. Adam, for what he thought was the last time, went to Holly's home and gave Holly's mom his drawing, commenting that the drawing has another side, which turns out to be Adam telling Holly that he'll always be there for her. Touched, Jean logs onto the internet with Holly's screen name and talks to Adam. Adam, thinking it's Holly, says that her mom is setting a bad example, getting up and leaving when things get bad. Jean is deeply moved by this and decides to stay, finding a new job and trying to rebuild her life without running away. She also apologizes to her daughter and tells her to look at the other side of the drawing, making Holly happy. Meanwhile Ben is intrigued by what Holly told him about her mother, and with Holly's help, Jean and Ben finally meet and Jean finds her 'perfect man' at last. Holly is on the road to her perfect man as now she has some stability in her life and finally opens up and admits her feelings for Adam. At the end, Adam and Holly go to their first school dance together.

Molly Gunn (Brittany Murphy) is a carefree and fun-spirited girl, living like a princess in a fairy tale. Her father was a popular rock-and-roll guitar player, who died in a plane crash with Molly's mother when she was a little girl. On her birthday in a nightclub, she meets Larraine "Ray" Schleine (Dakota Fanning), a hypochondriac and uptight young girl in a bathroom. Ray turns out to be the daughter of Roma Schleine (Heather Locklear), a well-known record company owner. There she also meets an ambitious Australian singer Neal (Jesse Spencer), who is trying to get Roma to sign him a record deal. Molly immediately falls for him and invites him to her apartment after the party. When at her apartment, Molly shows an amazed Neal the collection of guitars that her father left behind when he died. Bored by Molly's strange behavior, which includes owning a pet pig named Mu, eating Pez, speaking French, and various other oddities, he eventually leaves her for his career, but she does not give up on him. When Molly's accountant vanishes with her US$100,000,000 inheritance, she is left with nothing but debts, and she needs to find work in order to survive. But she has no previous experience or skills. She moves in with her best friend, Ingrid (Marley Shelton), who tells her that in order to stay with her, she must find a job. She is hired to be Ray's babysitter. Ray, as it turns out, lives in a fancy uptown apartment with her mother, who is too busy with work and clubbing to pay attention to her. Ray's father is in a coma, and under the care of a private nurse in the apartment. Ray doesn't seem fazed by her father's state at all. When they first meet, Ray is extremely rude towards Molly and disapproves of her carefree attitude and tardiness. The two get in a fight while they wash the dishes, which leads to Molly attempting to leave the apartment. She is stopped by Ray, who says "When you work for me, you leave when I say you can leave". Molly informs her that she in fact doesn't work for her; that she is employed by her mother. Ray responds by saying that because of Roma's work schedule and Molly's status, she is technically working for her. Molly yells that she quits, and angrily storms out of the apartment, giving herself a bloody nose as she slams a swinging door. Ray attempts to maintain order in her life by stifling her emotions - she often quotes Mikhail Baryshnikov: "Fundamentals are the building blocks of fun." She even feels this way about ballet, her beloved passion, leaving practice early when the class begins dancing freestyle. The day after the dish washing confrontation, Molly meets Ray at one of her ballet classes, apologizes for her behavior and asks for her job back. Molly gives Ray her pet pig Mu as a gift. Molly attempts to show Ray how to have fun, which at first causes them to fight. The two go to the amusement park Coney Island, only to find out that it is closed for the season. That night, as they ride back home on the subway, Molly tells Ray about the night her parents died. As Ray goes to bed, the two get into a conversation about Molly, in which Ray accuses her of being scared of growing up. Molly begins to talk about an incident in her childhood shortly after her parents' death in which she ran away to Coney Island and sat down in the Spinning Teacup ride, spinning round and round over and over again. Molly begins crying and tells Ray that she had hoped they could go to Coney Island together. Ray holds Molly as she cries, and the two fall asleep in Ray's bed. The next morning, Molly wakes up to find Ray gone. When she looks for her in the kitchen, she sees Neal there, and she finds out that he is sleeping with Roma in order to get a record deal. Later, Molly learns that Ray was in her father's room reading. She advises Ray to share her life with her father for his better recovery, telling her about a show she once saw about comatose people who recovered because their friends and relatives talked to them while they were still comatose. Ray does this, telling her comatose father all about Molly, ballet, and Mu. The next day, Molly arrives at Ray's house to find that Ray's father is gone from his room. She learns from the nurse that he had died that afternoon. Devastated, Molly rushes to Ray to offer her condolences. Ray is disturbingly emotionless, and calmly orders Molly to leave. Later that night, Molly is called to Roma's office, where she is informed that she is fired. Molly begins to criticize Roma on her relationship with her daughter, saying she doesn't "...give her respect, you give her whatever she asks so that you don't have to deal with her." She then asks Roma if she knows certain things about Ray, such as what stage she is at in ballet, or how she likes to drink her tea. Molly tears up the payment Roma had given her, and angrily leaves her office. Neal tries to get back together with Molly; since leaving her, he hasn't written a single song. But Molly refuses to be with him, as she now sees how selfish he is. She auctions her father's legendary guitar collection for financial support, and the whole collection is bought by a stranger on the phone. Days later, Molly gets a call from Roma, who tells her that Ray is missing and asks her for help. Molly searches desperately for Ray and eventually finds her in an amusement park sitting in the Teacup ride. The two ride the teacups for a bit, and afterward, as Ray vomits into a garbage can, Molly tries to comfort her. Ray at first reacts angrily and violently, but the two end up in a tearful embrace. Later, Molly attends Ray's father's funeral, where she reconciles with Ingrid, and sees that Roma is taking more of a part in Ray's life. Before Ray comes out to meet the rest of the guests at the funeral, she requests to speak to Molly alone. After they talk, Molly tells Ray that they are going to be best friends. Ray says that grown-ups are never friends with kids, to which Molly responds, "I don't see any grown-ups around here." Molly applies for Fashion Institute of Technology and gets positive reactions from them. She attends Ray's ballet recital. In the recital, Ray wears the tutu Molly made for her, and Neal makes an appearance as the lead singer, singing "Molly Smiles", a song Molly's father wrote for Molly. As he sings, he plays on one of her father's guitars, and some of the ballerinas hold his other guitars as they dance, proving that Neal was the one who bought the entire collection. Near the end of the recital, Ray does a freestyle dance, much to Molly's amusement. The scene fades with a shot of Molly smiling in the audience, and the credits roll as a voice of Ray is heard: "Every story has an end. But in life, every ending is just a new beginning."

The film takes place about 8 years after the events of "Space Jam". when the Warner Brothers Inc. Studio Company in Hollywood, Los Angeles announces a Bugs Bunny Movie, Bugs Bunny Esq. gets a starring role in the new movie, but his jealous frienemy Daffy Horacio Tiberius Armando Sheldon Duck wants to be in it too, fed up with villainous roles and overshadowing. However, studio executive Katelyn "Kate" Houghton looks at the numbers, and sees that nobody wants Daffy. She fires Daffy and orders him off the Warner Bros lot. a security guard named Damien "DJ" Drake Jr. must escort Daffy off the lot. Daffy does not leave easily and DJ must chase Daffy all around the Hollywood street causing tremendous damage to the studio and accidentally causes the Warner Bros' Water-Tower to fall down and cause a giant flood. DJ is also fired and kicked off the lot. He goes home, not knowing that Daffy is hiding in his backpack. At home, DJ gets a message from his famous movie-superstar father, Damien Drake, is actually a secret spy agent in real life. and that Doctor Luther J. Chairman, the dark evil president, now-owner (after the original founder Marvin Acme was murdered) and chairman of the evil Acme Corporation (likely located in Fairfield City, New Jersey) is holding him prisoner and wants an ancient mysterious magical legendary mythical blue monkey-shaped gem called: "The Blue Monkey Diamond" which has the supernatural powers to transform humans into monkeys so that Mr Chairman can shift all mankind into monkeys to use as slaves. Damien tells him in the message to go to Dusty Tails at Las Vegas, DJ must first find the Blue Monkey Diamond before the Acme Corporation does to save the world. DJ and Daffy join forces to find the Blue Monkey Diamond and then save his father and go in his old yellow pizza gremlin car. back at Warner Bros, they try to film the movie without Daffy, but fail. Mr Warner, the boss and owner of Warner Bros wants him back and sends Kate to get him back. Kate and Bugs arrive at DJ's house and realise that DJ went to Las Vegas with Daffy. they find Damien's secret spy car and use it to track the others to Las Vegas. Daffy and DJ arrive at the city of Las Vegas, Nevada and find Dusty Tails at Yosemite Sam's Western casino hotel restaurant, she gives them a "queen of diamonds" playing card and tells them about the Blue Monkey. Yosemite Sam and his other cowboys reveal that they are secretly evil agents for Acme and chase Daffy and DJ through the saloon trying to take the card, but Daffy and DJ escape and bump into Kate and Daffy and they all have a big city car chase across Las Vegas. they eventually all escape by putting the spy car in flying car mode and fly it out of Las Vegas, Sam has a car crash into a giant pile of explosives, resulting in a giant explosion. they crash into the desert and get marooned, until they find a Walmart store nearby and buy food and water supplies to survive. then they find Area#52 and a woman that works there named Mother shows them a video about the Blue Monkey and its supernatural magical powers to shift humans into monkeys. soon, one of the aliens there named Marvin The Martian receives a message from Mr Chairman of the Acme Corporation and Marvin escapes and breaks all the alien monsters out and attack Bugs, Daffy, DJ and Kate. they luckily manage to get out just in time. DJ looks closely at the card and notices it has the Mona Lisa's face on it, so they all go to the Museum of Paris, France and look closely at the Mona Lisa. DJ dissects the card in half and realises that half of it is an X-Ray, they X-Ray the Mona Lisa and take a photo of the X-Ray, which reveals that it has the map of the African jungle to the location of the Blue Monkey. Elmer J. Fudd jumps out and reveals that he was secretly a dark evil Acme Agent all along. he tries to steal the card and they have a big chase through the paintings of the Art Gallery 'til Elmer turns into tiny art pigments after chasing them through a pigment-made painting and forgets to change back to his normal form when he comes out, leaving Bugs just enough time to completely disintegrate him to smithereens using a wind fan before he can change back. meanwhile, Kate gets kidnapped by Mr Smith, Mr Chairman's assistant and sidekick. Mr Smith takes Kate up the Eiffel Tower and steals the camera with the X-Ray photo and tries to escape in a helicopter with the help of Beaky Buzzard The Vulture, Kate and DJ try to stop him but Kate has a giant fall from the tower. but DJ luckily catches her and saves her with a grappling hook. DJ, Bugs, Kate and Daffy travel to the jungles of Africa to find the Blue Monkey. they find DJ's neighbours, Grandmother Emily "Granny" Webster, an old woman with several pets: Sylvester James Pussycat and Tweetybird The Canary riding on an elephant through the jungle for a holiday. they all go together and find the Blue Monkey, though Granny and her pets soon take off disguises and reveal that they were actually Mr Chairman and his Acme Agents. they're teleported to The Acme Corporation building and they steal the Blue Monkey and take DJ and Kate as prisoner with Damien. they give the Blue Monkey to Marvin who takes it up into space to an Acme-owned Martian satellite near Planet Mars, Bugs and Daffy secretly follow him into space in a spare Acme escape vessel spaceship that they steal from Marvin. DJ and Kate manage to undo to ropes tied around them, only to be confronted by a giant evil Acme robot cyber-dog. Kate and DJ get into a fight with the dog while Damien is chained to a railway trap with TNT crates. DJ jumps to the railway trap just in time as the train (which is being driven by Wile Ethelbert Coyote, a hungry and super-genius coyote who works for Acme) goes by and he saves Damien. the TNT, however, is pushed underneath the train and explodes after it goes past. meanwhile in space, Marvin puts the Blue Monkey into the giant laser beam-satellite and attempts to zap the universe to transform all mankind into monkeys. Bugs comes with a carrot-light-saber and Daffy comes dressed as Duck Dodgers, they have a big epic space battle with Marvin and manage to blow up the satellite and foil Marvin and Acme's plan before it can zap the world and only one small bit of energy from the diamond makes it to Earth but only zaps Mr Chairman who turns into a monkey. Marvin tries to stop Bugs and Daffy with his Bubble-Gun, but it explodes as well and traps Marvin in a giant bubble and flies off into outer space. Bugs and Daffy return to the Acme tower and have saved the universe, only to walk out of a fake film-set back at Warner Bros and realise that none of it really happened and was just a movie being filmed that whole time. Daffy and Bugs decide that both of them are just as good and Daffy would never have any more "second-banana" again. Daffy thinks forward to his future career, knowing that this is just the beginning, only to be squashed by the Looney Toons' logo and the film ends.
