Tom (Josh Duhamel), Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) and their families gather for an ultimate destination wedding on a private island in the Philippines. The wedding party includes Tom's mother Carol, father Larry (Steve Coulter) sister Jeannie (Melissa Hunter), and friend Ricky (Desmin Borges). Darcy's side includes mother Renata (Sonia Braga), father Robert, and sister Jamie (Callie Hernandez). Robert has brought his girlfriend Harriet to the wedding. Robert also invites Darcy's ex-fiance Sean to the wedding and he arrives in a helicopter. Sean has a jet-setting global career, while Tom's contract with his professional baseball team has just expired and he is technically homeless. Darcy and Sean worked together in the Peace Corps and were even engaged in the past. Tom and Darcy are financing the wedding themselves, and Tom is obsessed with making everything perfect. Darcy's mother says that she should have taken her father's money and hired an event manager. Renata is a bit of a snob and looks down upon Carol, who is travelling out of the country or the first time. The rehearsal dinner is a disaster when Tom makes a toast which was not funny, and everybody ended up liking Sean's toast. Tom spends the entire night finishing pineapple centerpieces for the wedding. Tom is bothered that Darcy was engaged to Sean in the past. Darcy says that Sean started working with Robert and then changed. He only cared about status and money and so Darcy broke up with him. Ricky is Tom's best man ad Jamie sleeps with him the night before the wedding. Darcy summons Tom to a secluded part of the Island for a talk. She says that she is having second thoughts, and Tom agrees saying that they have been arguing more the last few months than they did in the first 4 years of their relationship. Darcy is sick of Tom trying to make everything perfect, while Tom says that Darcy doesn't even care about the wedding. Darcy says that she never wanted a big wedding as she is a grown woman. She never wanted Robert walking her down the aisle, or a big princess dress or even a wedding registry. She adds that she went ahead with it as she loved Tom. Now Tom wants to call off the wedding, and Darcy throws her ring at him, which he catches. Just as the couple are away arguing about the wedding, their guests are taken hostage. The pirates push all the wedding guests into the pool, which they use as a prison. The pirates demand $45 million dollars from Darcy's wealthy father Robert (Cheech Marin). He refuses to pay until he has proof that Darcy is alive. As they try to evade recapture, Darcy and Tom air their respective doubts about the wedding. Darcy and Tom are captured apart from the wedding party, but manage to escape their captors, killing one of the pirates. Darcy and Tom's hands are tied, and Darcy is holding a grenade in her hands without a pin. Darcy gives Tom a mobile phone that she had hid in her underwear before being captured, but the island has no cell reception. They head to the highest point on the island to find reception, but the pirates chase them, and they have to use the zip line to escape. Darcy drops the grenade on the pirates and kills 2. They reach the wedding venue and find all their guests have been taken hostage. They hide in the kitchen where they try to use a meat cutter to cut their ties. But Tom ends up slashing his hand and Darcy falls unconscious from the sight of blood. Their cries alert the pirates to their presence. Tom and semi-conscious Darcy work together to kill another pirate who comes to investigate the noise from the kitchen. They then go to manager's office to find internet but have no luck. Margy (Selena Tan) the manager pulls Darcy and Tom into a secret vault under her office. Margy says that Tom knew that there was a pirate attack at the island even last season. Cornered hiding in a vault beneath the manager's office, Tom surrenders to them so Darcy can stay hidden. When he rejoins the rest of the wedding party, Tom reveals that Darcy's ex-fiance Sean (Lenny Kravitz) had hired the pirates. Tom had found Sean's invitation card in the pockets of one of the killed pirates. Tom suspects that Sean orchestrated the entire attack to steal money from Robert. With his plot exposed, Sean goes to hunt down Darcy in a helicopter, taking Robert's girlfriend Harriet (D'Arcy Carden) as a hostage. Meanwhile, Darcy joins Tom and the rest at the pool where she and Tom admit that they still want to marry. The wedding party members realize that Harriet was in on the plot with Sean. Tom asks the two pirates standing guard to let them complete the wedding ceremony, and Robert says that he will release the money if they let them get married. As the guests sing "I'll Be", Tom and Darcy rush the pirates, and Darcy takes a grenade off one. One pirate surrenders, the other runs, then begins firing on the venue. Tom's mother Carol (Jennifer Coolidge) grabs a weapon from the ground and returns fire. Darcy throws the grenade in the air so Tom can bat it at the pirate, who is killed in the explosion (which also sets off the fireworks that had been staged for the wedding celebration). As the wedding party goes to safety, Darcy and Tom race to get help, but are confronted on the dock by Sean. Tom fights him, then Tom and Darcy escape in a boat. Harriet tries to stop them in a helicopter. Sean, who had managed to stay with them by grabbing a mooring line, climbs aboard and fights Tom again while Darcy drives the boat. A para-sail is released, taking Tom and Sean into the air. Tom zips down the line to the boat deck. He and Darcy cut the line, sending the para-sail loose into the helicopter's rotors, which kills both Sean and Harriet. Back on the beach, as authorities take the remaining pirates into custody, Tom and Darcy get married.

Happy-go-lucky advertising executive David Basner (Tom Hanks), who recently got a promotion at his Chicago ad agency, returns to work from a vacation. He is utterly carefree until his parents split up after 36 years of marriage. Out of the blue, he must care for his aging, bitter father Max (Jackie Gleason), as well as be there for his emotionally fragile mother, Lorraine (Eva Marie Saint). To add insult to injury, Max has just been fired from his 35-year career in the garment industry. At work, David is developing a commercial for Colonial Airlines, owned by the rich and eccentric Andrew Woolridge (Barry Corbin). A successful ad campaign would likely promote David to partner in his company. At the same time, David develops a romantic relationship with Woolridge's daughter, the no-nonsense Cheryl Ann Wayne (Sela Ward). His father is well aware of David's playboy nature. Asking at one point if his son is in bed with a woman, Max adds: "Anybody you know?" Over the next few months, the parents begin to rely more and more on David, calling him on the phone constantly. His mother needs help moving to a new apartment. His father needs to be driven to an eye doctor. Lorraine needs to be rescued in a bar after going out on a date with another man, having become frightened when he tried to kiss her goodnight. David's mother then confides to him that Max cheated on her and humiliated her. An enraged David goes to confront Max. Their argument ends with David saying: "Tomorrow I'm shooting a commercial about a family who loves each other, who cares about each other. I'm fakin' it." The next day, David is distracted by the deteriorating relationship with his father and it affects his work. As a peace offering, David offers to take Max to a nightclub to hear some of the jazz music Max likes. It is there that David accidentally discovers a secret Max has been hiding from the family: he has severe diabetes. When Max takes off his shoes to dance to the jazz music, David sees that his father's right foot is gangrened. Max must go to the hospital for his foot to be amputated. While awaiting surgery, he and Lorraine share their thoughts about their life together, with Lorraine condemning him for doing what he did to himself and to her. Max sobs over his mistakes once he is alone. At the agency, Andrew Woolridge insists that David go to New York with him to promote his new ad campaign. David refuses, saying he wants to stay with his sick father. Woolridge complains that it's unnecessary for business must come first. David tells him off and is quickly fired. The next day, David accompanies his dad to the operating room. His boss Charlie (Hector Elizondo) assures him that he will personally smooth things over with Woolridge, so David should take some time off. In the final scene, David goes back to the hospital where he learns from the doctor who performed the surgery that he managed to save Max's right foot, but had to amputate two toes. David enters Max's room to take him home. As David wheels Max through the hospital to his car to take him home, Max admits to his son: "You were the last person I thought would come through for me." Later, David gets his job back (although being fired earlier) and shows Max what he does for a living and Max is impressed at seeing what David does at work.

In New York City, Douglas Breen (Michael Biehn), a record store salesman, types a fan letter to actress Sally Ross (Lauren Bacall). However, Douglas is upset when Sally's secretary, Belle Goldman (Maureen Stapleton), answers the letter and encloses a picture of Sally he already has. In his next letter to "Miss Ross," he chastises her secretary for signing Sally's reply, and ends his note with "All my love." Belle writes to Douglas, apologizing for sending a photograph he already has. Douglas writes back to Sally that her secretary is "snide" and should be punished. Belle reads the letter aloud, but Sally is preoccupied and does not listen. Sally is celebrating her 50th birthday and nervous about starting rehearsals for her first musical. On Sally's birthday, she joins her former husband, director Jake Berman (James Garner), for lunch and learns he has moved back to New York City while working on his new film. Sally asks about his young girl friend, Heidi (Lesley Rogers), and Jake admits they are engaged. Meanwhile, Douglas sets out a romantic dinner for two in his apartment. He is angry when his sister (Kaiulani Lee) arrives and interrupts his dinner with a "famous star." She is worried about his fantasizing, but Douglas shuts the door on her and returns to his make-believe dinner with Sally. Douglas sends another letter, inquiring if Sally has scolded her secretary. He also follows Sally to the rehearsal studio for her new play. His next letter is more personal, containing the salutation "Dear Sally" and the assertion that he and Sally will soon be lovers. Douglas is increasingly irritated with a female co-worker and plans to complain to the record store manager. However, the manager berates Douglas for his work. Douglas writes to Sally that he finally confronted his boss and can now devote all of his time to her. Belle writes back that she will not show his letters to Sally, and if he writes again, she will contact the police. Infuriated, Douglas plans to deliver his next letter personally. He writes that he no longer needs to include his name or address because Sally knows where to find him. He arrives at the rehearsal hall after Sally has left for a break. A production assistant promises to deliver the letter to Sally, and hands it to Belle. Later, Belle shows the letter to Sally and worries that Douglas Breen might be dangerous. Sally insists he is harmless and throws away the letter. That evening, Sally and her friend, David Branum (Kurt Johnson), go to a party that Jake Berman and his fiancee are also attending. Meanwhile, as Belle heads home on the subway, Douglas attacks her while she is walking through the deserted station and slashes her face. Later, Jake joins Sally at the hospital and they wonder why Belle was attacked. As Belle recovers, Sally receives an unsigned love letter from Douglas. He believes Sally is longing for him and admits that he attacked Belle so Sally could answer his letters. Sally and Jake meet with police detective Raphael Andrews (Hector Elizondo), who asks to see the previous correspondence. Sally admits they did not keep the prior letters, and the current note does not include a name or address. Detective Andrews visits Belle in the hospital and reveals that Sally's psychotic fan was her attacker. Belle can only remember that his first name is Douglas. By the time she realized he was not a normal fan, he had already stopped signing his name. Later, Douglas watches Sally leave the rehearsal studio with David Branum, who kisses her goodbye. Douglas follows David to the YMCA swimming pool. As David swims laps, Douglas dives into the pool, slices David with a knife and swims away. He writes to Sally about the incident, and warns he is losing patience with her sadistic refusal to write him. Andrews provides 24 hour police protection for Sally, noting that Douglas will now come after her directly. Douglas continues his stalking and notices Sally's police protection. Soon, the rehearsals move from the studio to the theater. Jake Berman visits Sally in her dressing room and asks why she has not called him recently. She does not want to interfere with his relationship with Heidi, and also does not want to depend on him. Sally cooks dinner for Raphael Andrews and he wants her understudy to do the preview performances, but Sally insists on appearing in them. The next day, the maid is alone in Sally's apartment when Douglas sneaks in and brutally kills her with a straight razor. He leaves a letter for Sally that starts with "Dear Bitch," and threatens to kill her. Andrews asks if Sally wants to call Jake for company, but she refuses. That night, Douglas telephones Sally and says he wants to make love to her. He asks her to speak to him because he does not want to kill her, but Sally hangs up the telephone. She calls Jake, but Heidi picks up the telephone and she does not leave a message. The next morning, the policewoman protecting Sally awakens to find the actress gone, and she realizes Sally drugged her tea the previous evening. As Sally hides at her beach house, television news reports on her disappearance. Douglas goes to a nightclub and picks up a man who resembles him. He offers to have sex with the man, lures him to a secluded spot and murders him. Douglas douses the body with gasoline and sets it on fire. He writes another letter to Sally, claiming he must atone for the pain he caused her, and he tapes the "suicide" note to a wall near the burnt corpse. Later, Jake arrives at Sally's beach house with news of Douglas's death, and they reminisce about their 15 years together. Back in New York City, Belle returns to work as Sally prepares for opening night. Jake brings flowers to Sally's dressing room, and announces he ended his relationship with Heidi and would like to try again with Sally. She accepts his proposal, and then goes on with the show. Douglas slips into the audience during the play, but leaves during the standing ovation after the final curtain. After the show, Jake leaves for the opening night party, but promises to return to pick up Sally after she changes. Almost everyone has left the theater when Douglas slips backstage. He murders Sally's costumer, then kills the stage manager and locks the theater door. Douglas surprises Sally in her dressing room and follows as she runs to the stage to escape him. He catches Sally and finally kisses her. When she struggles to get away, he wants to know why she never answered him. She insists she does not even know him, and when he tries to kiss her again, she calls him "pathetic." He demands she stop angering him and threatens her with a knife. When she continues to berate Douglas, he hugs her and begs her to love him. Sally grabs his knife and stabs her "fan" to death.

Julian Kay (Richard Gere) is a gigolo, a young man who makes a living as a wealthy ladies' escort. His official pimp/employer, Anne (Nina Van Pallandt) realizes that he is her star prostitute despite not being faithful to her. A small 'chauffeur' gig is planned for the next day, but Julian looks more interested in getting a higher percentage of the profits than in the practical contact details. After bargaining some more, Julian leaves and refuses to suntan with other two girls (Michele Drake and Linda Horn). We learn that Anne has been carefully preparing a highly-paid job with a Swedish woman who is about to arrive in Los Angeles. Julian trains at home to keep in good shape when a gay pimp, Leon James (Bill Duke) calls to ask him to act as a sub for an urgent gig to be played the next day in Palm Springs, some 110 miles - 2 hours drive from Los Angeles. Reluctantly, Julian finally accepts for 90% of the fees agreed with client. Leon chokes but has no other choice than greedy Julian... Julian does his chauffeur gig for a rich widow. He looks forward to meet the lady again for more and so reports to Anne afterwards. Sometimes, Julian tries to find his own clients, so he makes a pass at Michelle Stratton (Lauren Hutton), who is sitting alone at a high-end restaurant. In the ensuing conversation, Michelle sees Julian for what he is, although he claims to be only hired as a guide, a translator or a chauffeur. No deal is closed that night, and Julian leaves alone. Later in Palm Springs, Tom Rheiman (Tom Stewart) wants Julian to beat his wife Judy (Patricia "Patti" Carr) while making love to her from behind. Although Julian does not like that kind of jobs (S&M and bondage), he's already been paid, and he's already there, so it's understood that he complies. Two nights after that, Julian learns in the papers that Judy Rheiman was assaulted and murdered in Palm Springs. He later goes with Lisa Williams (K Callan) at Sotheby's Parke-Bernet to choose the bric-a-brac needed to redecorate her mansion. They have fun and laugh together. There is then an incident when Julian pretends to be gay in front of a casual, embarrassing acquaintance of Lisa (Faye Michael Nuell) and he almost breaks a valuable porcelain into pieces in the attempt to quickly get rid of the lady. Right after that, Julian and Lisa leave the place laughing. Michelle appears at Julian's apartment. Many people know who he is and where he lives, so she only had to ask. At first, he says to her that he doesn't work in his own apartment, but she talks to him and they end up going to bed together. Afterwards, Michelle talks about how her marriage to politician Charles Stratton (Brian Davies) is void of love or emotion. He advises her to start thinking about herself, because it looks that the only reason for the marriage to stay together is because it would be damaging to Stratton's political career. The next day, LAPD Detective Joe Sunday (Hector Elizondo) arrives at Julian's apartment in Los Angeles to question him about the death of Judy Rheiman in Palm Springs. She was killed, and Julian says (quite arrogantly), that she was with Lisa Williams choosing the decorations at the time of the crime. Detective Sunday leaves without arresting Julian, but warns him not to leave town for he may return to ask more questions. Julian keeps on seeing his clients. For example, Mrs Laudner takes him to a political party where the main guest is Stratton. He greets him and his wife, pretending not knowing her (and vice-versa). When Julian inquires about gossips concerning the Strattons, Mrs Laudner says that Michelle is very sad. As Michelle keeps on meeting Julian whenever she can, something which gets noticed by her husband, Julian starts being followed by a political aide of Stratton. Julian decides to face the beat and talk to Stratton directly. Charles Stratton tries to buy him up with $5,000 to stop seeing his wife, which Julian refuses, as he has begun to feel really interested in Michelle. Stratton warns him about the good graces of his small HiSo supports to end soon, if he persists to see Michelle. Another day or two later, Sunday follows Julian to his usual shoeshine parlor. He says there were handcuff marks over previous handcuff bruises on Judy's wrists, meaning Julian lied when he said he never handcuffed her during the gig done for Leon. Since Lisa Williams had said to the detectives that Julian left her at 7:00 pm in the evening, not later, and basically denying that they had a sexual relationship together, Sunday states there was enough time for Julian to drive to Palm Springs back and forth plus commit the crime... Julian has to go to the police station for a line-up, but the witness is not sure about him being the person who went to Judy Rheiman's home earlier that day. Julian feeds a protestation from a fellow inmate obliged to participate in the line-up. Sunday and Lt. Curtis (David Cryer) later talk with Julian again at the LAPD. Sunday laughs at the situation, because in his previous visit Julian had given him some advice to be more attractive to ladies and he is trying to improve his overall appearance. Julian stays free after the key witness could not formally identify him during the line-up. Julian begins to get worried. He needs an alibi for the night of the crime. Next, he goes to the Williams' house, but Lisa doesn't want to acknowledge that she ever met him: the police has been to her home with a restraining order against Julian. Mr. Williams (Richard Derr) also appears, and he coldly dismisses Julian saying that on the night of the crime Lisa was with him all the time. Julian meets Leon at a gay disco and asks him to give him an alibi, what he finally seems to agree. Leon even suggests that Rheiman is the real culprit, as he is a 'freak'. The police search Julian's apartment during his absence, leaving it in a total mess. Julian later meets Michelle in a botanical park; she must leave for two months in Europe on her husband's orders, until the polls are over. Julian states the news are hard to stand. Once back home, Julian recognizes Leon's blonde boyfriend (Gordon Haight) leaving quickly the garage in his vintage Porsche 911. Julian gets really paranoid and he creates havoc in his apartment to find the jewels who have been said stolen at the Rheimans' in Palm Springs and are still missing. He finally finds them hidden in his luxurious car - a car he had to tear to pieces in order the find the jewels. He grabs the plastic pouch and decides to leave quickly for downtown, where he rents a plain Ford Pinto to pursue his quest for help. Julian calls Anne for help and accepts a short notice rendezvous at the Perino's. Calling Jill (Jessica Potter) at his reception, he learns that the police are sitting there waiting for him and that Michelle tried to meet him urgently. Showing dirty and jacketless at the Perino's, he is rebuked by the maître d'hôtel (Harris Weingart) because of his untidy look. There, Anne does not want to know anything about him: Julian forgot about picking the European lady at the airport, destroying a big deal arranged months ago. Anne gets really mad at him, and she does not want to work with him again nor help him through. As she has always been disappointed with Julian, who got clients on his own, and worked for other bosses sometimes now it's her opportunity to let him go. Julian, who had told Jill about the place he would be, notices Michelle at a table near. They meet shortly in the restroom and Julian requests from Michelle that she forgets everything about him, since he is framed and lost. Julian stalks Leon in the red light zones, but to no avail. He waits until the dawn near his home and finally sees him arriving along with his blonde BF. He shows up at Leon's flat, is granted access while his blonde boy hides then leaves discreetly; Julian argues again about the alibi he needs now. But Leon states that some things from the Rheimans' house, linked to the murder, have appeared at Julian's apartment and have being seized by the police; that the 'bitch' from Palm Springs reviewed definitely her eyewitness report about Julian having been seen at the Rheimans' house... So that Julian is obviously the ideal culprit and thus will fall alone. Julian throws the jewels pouch at Leon who ignores the thing. Julian tries to explain the case: blonde boy may have killed Judy Rheiman during a hardcore gig, then the husband arranged with Leon to frame him. Leon does not say anything. Julian offers to work for Leon the way he wants, to break in new boys, do any tricks... As this doesn't work, he offers to pay Leon a great deal of money, but Leon says that the person who's framing him will always rise the bet higher than him. As an answer to Julian's "why me?" question, Leon reveals he was precisely the lonesome, self-centered and toe-crushing guy ideal for the role. Leon then asks Julian to leave while he greets the blonde boy from the balcony. In an ensuing rage, Julian runs after him, pushes him so Leon ends up falling down the balcony; but he is grabbed at the latest moment by Julian who holds tight Leon's legs - but his feet slip out of his boots and he falls many floors below. Julian remains stunned in Leon's apartment, all his hopes to escape the frame being lost. Since a maid who happened to be around testified that Julian tried to pull Leon to safety, he goes to prison on the sole charge of Judy Rheiman's murder. There is a great deal of media interest on Julian's case, as his profession has been disclosed. Michelle visits Julian in prison to inform him that she is willing to give up everything to be with him. Feeling that all has been lost, Julian asks Michelle not to see him again. However, Michelle pays for Julian's defense who changes his old-time lawyer (Peter Turgeon) for a new one (William Dozier). However, Julian will not be freed until Michelle finally faces Lt Curtis. The detective already knows that she's paying for Julian's defense lawyer. She says that doing so, she wants to show Julian's innocence, because she was with her that night of the crime. In the final scene, Michelle has already revealed her secret, and media immediately has set camp in front of the Strattons', so she cannot go back anyway. Although they are still talking through a glass, it's implied that Julian will soon be freed and that they will be together.

Patty Butler (Susan Blakely), is a very comely young police officer who is pretending to be a runaway girl with the nickname of "Chicklet," and has been given permission by the department to be the live-in girlfriend of Thomas 'Stick' Henderson (Tony King), a suspected drug dealer, so that the police can gather evidence against him. To back up her cover story, Detective Bo Lockley (Michael Moriarty) has been given what should be an almost impossible assignment: without being told she is actually an undercover police officer, he is instructed to spend a few weeks trying to find Chicklet. Bo openly looking for and trying to find her will convince Stick that his girlfriend really is a runaway. Amazingly, Bo is actually an excellent detective and finds her in the sleazy underbelly of the city. Bo is then thanked by his supervisor, Richard 'Crunch' Blackstone (Yaphet Kotto) and told to go back to his previous assignment. Either infatuated with Chicklet or not able to just allow her to be abandoned by the system, he goes to Stick's loft to try and rescue her. In the process, Bo and Stick become engaged in a firefight, whereupon Stick is able to escape the apartment, and Bo ends up chasing Stick, running across town barefoot, carrying a handgun and dressed only in boxer shorts, into a department store, and are trapped in a Mexican standoff in one of the department store elevators. Eventually the police barricade the elevator, and Crunch grabs him when Bo and Stick leave through the elevator's emergency exit ceiling panel. Bo having been pulled to safety, the police then open fire on Stick, killing him. In the aftermath of the firefight and the subsequent killing of Stick, it is discovered that Officer Butler was killed in Stick's loft by Bo, and an investigation has to be made as to whether he was negligent. As a result of the investigation, it's determined that she was killed as a result of Bo trying to defend himself from Stick shooting at him, and thus the shooting was accidental. Bo, however, was so depressed by what he had done that he hung himself in his jail cell before he finds out that it was an accident. The movie is, in effect, a police report of an incident where a police officer was shot by another officer who later committed suicide in jail, and a suspected perpetrator being killed in a public place (the department store), being made to the Police Commissioner, which is where the title of the film came from.

In New York City, four heavily armed men with code names (Mr. Blue, Mr. Green, Mr. Grey, and Mr. Brown), wearing disguises of eyeglasses, fedora hats, and fake mustaches, board at different station stops (the Green Line at 59th Street, Grey Line at 51st Street, Brown Line at Grand Central, and finally Blue Line at 28th Street) on the Pelham 123 subway train run of the 6 Lexington Avenue Local service. The men take the train, securing a group of hostages, whom they isolate in one car of the train, then disconnect this car from the rest of the train. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau), a cynical and curmudgeonly yet light-hearted New York City Transit Authority police lieutenant, begins his day by leading four visiting Tokyo Metro directors on a tour of New York's subway command-center. This is interrupted by Blue's radio announcement to the command center that "your train has been taken." Blue (Robert Shaw), the British-accented leader of the hijackers, tells Garber they are demanding a ransom of one million dollars, to be delivered to them within one hour; otherwise they will kill one passenger per minute, starting when the hour has passed. Garber, the sarcastic Lieutenant Rico Patrone (Jerry Stiller), and other transit workers cooperate while trying to guess how the criminals intend to escape the subway tunnel and get away. Various clues soon surface for Garber to figure out, first with his hearing Blue's very distinctive English accent over the radio. It later turns out that Blue was a ruthless British mercenary, and Green (Martin Balsam) is a former transit worker who from time to time sneezes over the radio and is heard by Garber, who responds by saying "Gesundheit." Garber also learns that one of the hostages is an undercover police officer. The mayor finally agrees to pay the ransom at the urging of his deputy mayor. The police dispatch a squad car carrying the ransom money. When the car is wrecked in a collision, Garber daringly bluffs to buy some time, telling the takers that the money already has been delivered to the 28th Street Station and only the walk down the tunnel is delaying it. A reluctant Blue agrees to the delay. A police motorcycle completes the trip from the scene of the collision to the subway station and two unarmed officers are sent down the track on foot to deliver the money to the hijackers. With the money finally in hand, the hijackers demand that electric power be restored to the subway line, and that all signals in the path of the train be turned green from 28th Street to the South Ferry station, both of these being necessary for the car to move. Having overridden the subway car's dead-man's switch, which would otherwise ensure its stopping unless someone remained at the throttle, the hijackers get off the train and set it in motion. As the train starts to move, the undercover officer also jumps off the train and hides between the rails. The car begins to travel faster and faster, since no one is controlling its speed. Outside the tunnel, Garber and Inspector Daniels are convinced that the runaway train is a diversion and that the hijackers must have left the train. The hijackers divide the ransom money, discard their disguises, and start their escape into the tunnel's emergency exit; however, Grey refuses to leave his gun behind as agreed and is shot dead by Blue. The undercover officer, still hiding in the tracks, manages to kill Brown with one shot. Green escapes onto the street. Garber arrives after Green has gotten away and, drawing on Blue, orders him to surrender just as Blue is about to shoot the undercover officer. Blue asks Garber if the death penalty is available in the state of New York anymore. Told that it is not, Blue responds, "Pity", then promptly electrocutes himself by stepping onto the third rail while a horrified Garber watches. Entering the South Ferry Loop, the runaway car finally encounters a red signal. The car's emergency brakes are tripped and it grinds to a halt; the remaining hostages are all safe. Green, the only hijacker to escape, has left as a clue only Garber's surmise that one of the hijackers must be an ex-motorman of the New York Transit Authority (owing to the hijackers' knowledge of the car's operation). With the dead three all identified, Garber realizes that the hijacker still at large must be the former transit employee. Garber and Patrone, working their way through a list of former motormen "discharged for cause" (and, by implication, disgruntled), pay a visit to Harold Longman. Longman, known to the audience as Mr. Green, is shown rolling in the packs of ransom money on the bed in his seedy efficiency apartment when Garber and Patrone knock on his door. He hides the money quickly, then opens to the officers and bluffs his way through their questioning. The officers find Longman's alibi weak, but start out the door, until Longman sneezes and Garber says "Gesundheit." Garber then re-opens the door, the expression on his face in the door opening (the film's final frame) telling the audience that he knows he has just found the final hijacker.

A Mexican-American sheriff (Burt Lancaster) must resort to violence against a powerful rancher (Frank Tanner, played by Jon Cypher) in order to get just compensation for the pregnant Indian widow of a wrongly killed black man. The town constable, Bob Valdez (Burt Lancaster), is forced to kill someone accused by Frank Tanner of being a murderer. Valdez asks Tanner for monetary help for the man's wife, but he is ridiculed and almost killed by Tanner's henchmen. Valdez recovers and summons up his days in the U.S. Cavalry in order to fight them. Valdez wounds one of the henchmen and sends him back to Tanner with the message, "Valdez is coming."
