Raj visits his ancestral homeland in Mumbai, to attend his cousin Nikki's (Meghna Malik) wedding. Nikki has sisters Pooja (Jennifer Winget) & Aria (Zoya Afroz). Raj was forced to attend due to his mom being busy with her patients, who require critical attention. Dr. Malhotra laments to her brother, Rakesh (Nikki's father), that Raj is out of her control. Rakesh promises that if she sends Raj to India, he will find a suitable match for him. Dr. Malhotra argues with Raj that he is the only cousin brother in the family and hence his presence is needed at her engagement, with Dr. Malhotra promising to come for the wedding. Raj knows that Rakesh will try to fix him up with a girl and says that he loves his freedom too much. Nikki calls Raj and says that she does not want to get married, and she is being forced. She says that only Raj can stand up to Rakesh. At the airport, Raj finds that he was a late show, and his seat was assigned to another lady. Raj lies to the lady that he has a 3-year-old son who has a rare heart disease and its imperative that he gets on the flight. The lady takes sympathy on Raj and gives her seat to Raj, taking the next available flight. Once in India, Raj narrates a story to Rakesh that Nikki's fiance Ajay is gay and has a boyfriend in the US, and he is leaving him to marry Nikki. Ajay still loves the boyfriend, but did not have the courage to speak to his parents about him and hence is being forced to marry Nikki. Rakesh is now convinced that Nikki cannot marry Ajay. He reaches home to call off the wedding. Nikki is shocked and tells Raj that she loves Ajay. Raj is forced to admit the truth to Rakesh and apologizes to Ajay, who is a really nice guy. Raj finds himself pushed towards marriage by his overzealous uncle Rakesh Sharma (Satish Shah) who is also Nikki's father. His uncle's employee, Namrata (Aishwarya Rai) chaperons Raj on a series of set-ups/dates, all of which he deliberately sabotages. Turns out Namrata was the lady whom Raj lied to at the airport. She was in the US to bring back some dresses for Nikki. And due to Raj's antics, she got late returning to India and arrived just before the engagement with the dresses and jewelry that Nikki wanted to wear on the occasion. Naturally Namrata is taken aback when she realizes that Raj told her a blatant lie just for an airline seat. Still Namrata is forced to spend time with Raj as Rakesh has promised her a promotion if Raj gets married during his trip to India. Raj says that he is uncomfortable meeting the women in a family setting and Namrata convinces Rakesh that the meetings could be private. The first girl is Rachna (Divya Palat), whom Raj meets in a temple and says that he believes in re-incarnation. He says that in their previous life, they had a kid, and they died when they fell off a mountain in Kedarnath. She was named Savitri back then. Raj claims that Savitri's body was found 3 days later, and he never re-married. Rachna gets really spooked by this story and runs away. The next girl is Poonam (Gautami Kapoor), who he meets at a club. Poonam breaks down when her ex Vikram (Eijaz Khan) enters the club. Raj and Namrata help Poonam get back together with her ex. During the course of the wedding ceremonies, Raj discovers that he is falling for Namrata. After some deliberation, he decides to tell her, but to his surprise, he discovers she has a 7-year-old son, Aditya (Master Parth Dave). Raj is confused but forms a strong fatherly relationship with Aditya. Raj's uncle informs him that Namrata's husband Sanjeev (Arbaaz Khan) disappeared right before Aditya's birth and has never returned to his son or wife. Finding a letter that Raj had written confessing his feelings, Namrata gets upset thinking Raj tried to use her son to get close to her. She attempts to distance herself from him, but a stubborn Raj follows her to Aditya's boarding school with Principal Ms. Loccolith Lobo (Tannaz Irani), having promised the boy to pose as his father. Raj helps Aditya look good in front of his friends and protects his self-confidence. On being prodded by Raj, she tells him that her husband Sanjeev left her for another woman while she was pregnant. Namrata and Raj begin to bond. After some months, Raj decides to introduce Namrata to his mother. A short while later, he finds out that Sanjeev has returned and is looking to reconcile with Namrata. Namrata is aghast and makes it clear that she does not want anything to do with him. Sanjeev says that he left for US with a girl to make money. But after 4 years the girl left with all the money. Sanjeev then spent the next 3 years working hard and getting himself back up, so he could come back and claim his family back. Sanjeev refuses to leave, becoming stubborn and persistent, threatening her with a lawsuit for custody of Aditya. This puts Namrata on the path of reconciliation with Sanjeev. Raj's family feels Sanjeev has no right on Namrata and Aditya, but the decision belongs to her and her alone. After a chance meeting at a temple, Raj invites Sanjeev to his home for Nikki's wedding. Aditya is present and is affectionate with Raj, calling him "Dad." Sanjeev becomes jealous and angry, insulting Raj and his family. After witnessing Sanjeev's bad behavior towards Raj, Namrata finally gets the courage to stand up to him. She publicly tells him off and also admits that she is in love with Raj. Sanjeev is ashamed and disappears once again warning Raj to not make the mistakes he made with his family. Six months later Raj and Namrata decide to get married and are soon expecting a child.

Balram Singh (Amrish Puri) is Krishna's elder brother, and they live in a joint family. Karan's college friends are Chinku (Vrajesh Hirjee), Dabbu (Hemant Pandey) and Hrithik (Gopal Datt). Priya (Rinke Khanna) is Karan's sister, and is studying to become a doctor. Karan's elder brother Pankaj is a computer engineer Chiku tries to commit suicide when the girl he loves is being forcefully married to someone else by her father. Karan gets Pinky to run away from her house and brings her to the temple to marry Chiku. Pinky's father arrives at the temple and brings Chiku with him. He had beaten Chiku so much, that he refuses to marry Pinky. Karan fights off Pinky's father and all of his goons. The father is a MLA and calls the police. Karan is arrested and faces wrath from Krishna. That night, Karan is depressed. Wandering on the streets, he notices young Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) playing with little children. Before he can approach her, she leaves. After that, he starts to see her everywhere (on the streets, at the temple and so on) (but every-time Pooja leaves before Karan can approach her or talk to her), and completely falls in love with her. He looks day and night, but there is no sign of Pooja. Pooja is a philanthropist and the niece of Rana Virendra Pratap Singh (Alok Nath). Priya derides Karan and says that this is merely attraction and not love. One day Pooja notices Karan save a dosing girl from falling off her father's scooter.. Pooja likes all people who do good and wants to take his autograph. But before she can reach out to Karan, he has already left. Priya is being harassed by some goons led by gang leader (Yashpal Sharma). Karan finds out and picks up a huge fight with them. The gang-leader is beaten up and retreats as Karan's friends arrive with reinforcements. To get Karan to focus on his studies, he is sent to Shimla to stay his uncle, where their car breaks down. He hitches a ride from a stranger, and is shocked to find out that the driver is his dream girl, Pooja (she was also sent to Shimla by her father). During the drive, a truck hits the car which falls into a valley. Karan and Pooja hang by the edge of the cliff but Karan saves Pooja before his hands slip and he falls down. After gaining consciousness, Pooja realizes it was her fault that Karan died and searches for his body. Meanwhile, Karan is found by a lumberjack in the forest and is taken to a hospital. He is reunited with his family, and starts his rehabilitation at home. Pooja finds Karan first (by working with her uncle Rana Virendra Pratap) and they start a friendship. Pooja is relieved that Karan has lived. Balram advises Karan to go fast and announce his love to Pooja. But Priya advises that Pooja is a mature woman and says that Karan should get to know her first.. Karan starts spending more time with Pooja. Pooja comes over to Karan's house for Teej.. Pooja and Priya become close friends. Balram treats her like family. Karan's friends also meet Pooja and sing his praises in front of her. Karan finds that Krishna has fixed Priya marriage with an avg looking doctor who studies with her. He knows Priya's ambitions of marrying a good looking, handsome man. He objects to his family. But Balram tells Karan that Priya has selected the guy. Priya confirms the news and says that she realized that Rajesh really loves her and is devoted to her. His love is pure and he will keep her happy, so she is OK to sacrifice for looks and other things. When it feels like their friendship is evolving into something more, he finds out that Rana Sahab has planned an engagement to a US friend of Pooja. But later Pooja tells Karan that her friend is engaged to some other girl and not Pooja. Karan is very relieved. He spends even more time with Pooja as she participates in the family festivities around Priya's wedding. For Pooja's birthday, Karan writes her a letter with his blood, but she finds it disgusting. At the same time she gives him a trumpet as a gift.. Karan's friends advise him that the time has come to express his love to Pooja. The gangster returns just as Karan was heading to Pooja and destroys the trumpet. Karan is enraged and beats up the gangster badly and forces him to retreat. Karan reaches Pooja and finds that Pooja is also bound for America for further studies (her application to Harvard was accepted). Devastated, he finally confesses that he loves her (after being yelled at by Priya (just before her departure from the wedding ceremony) to tell the truth to Pooja, as Karan didn't want Pooja to stay back because of him). Actually Karan never said a word and warned his entire family from saying anything to Pooja. But Pooja figures out that Karan loves her just before she is about to leave for her flight at the airport. Pooja cannot deny her feelings, also confesses her love and they both promise to marry each other when she gets back.

But she finds shelter in the character played by Anil Kapoor. —Gonz30 Naive yet bold and daring, Preeti Virat, comes forward as a witness to heinous assault carried by Bhavani Choudhry and his men on a person who owes them money. Bhavani is arrested and held for trial. This angers the Choudhry family. The victim is threatened with dire consequences, and he withdraws the complaint, and as a result Bhavani is released and all charges are dropped. Preeti is then raped by one of the Choudhry men, and subsequently her very own family disowns her. She finds shelter with another do-gooder, Avinash, who even takes her to his apartment. But the story does not end here, for the neighborhood is soon in an uproar over her, and want her to leave. The only solution is that Preeti marry Avinash, she agrees to do so, and then finds out that there is two children who called Avinash "daddy", and she does not know if there is another woman or even a wife involved. Small-time crook Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) has no idea about a real family-life as he grew up in an orphanage which he even today still supports with regular donations as a token of his gratitude. Sanju is connected to the underworld and sometimes passes on critical information to the police, so that he can earn a 10% commission on all illegal materials confiscated. When he one day spoils a deal of drug boss Jogiya Seth (Paresh Rawal), the latter abducts a little girl from the orphanage and thus blackmails Sanju to make up for his loss: Within one month, Sanju has to pay five million rupees to him. Sanju's buddy Natwar (Johny Lever) suggests that Sanju should pose as Sanjay Shastri, a remote American relative of the wealthy industrial family Choudhary, thus gain access to their house and then rob them. The real Sanjay Shastri is in Natwar's custody. The extended family, headed by Dadaji Dinanath (Anjan Srivastav) and Dadiji Sudha (Farida Jalal), takes Sanju in. Soon the whole family loves this maverick guy who effortlessly manages to solve big and small family problems. The Chaudhary Parivar has three brothers. The elder one is Dilip (Om Puri), who is an honest man and takes care of the family business. Mahesh (Ashok Saraf) is the second one who is a gambler. The third, Satish (Jatin Kanakia) has the habit of stuttering and is absent minded. Savita (Himani Shivpuri) is Mahesh's wife and Ratna (Supriya Pilgaonkar) is Satish's wife and cannot stand each other. Dilip's wife passed away during childbirth of Shivani due to which Shivani believes she is bad luck. Bela is Mahesh's daughter. Raju is Satish's son who cannot walk. Shivani (Urmila Matondkar) is the daughter of Dilip. Shivani is beautiful but without self-esteem or confidence. This makes the whole family anxious about Shivani's marital prospects. Sanju also starts laying the groundwork by receiving calls from Natwar about an impending transfer of $ 10 million into his Indian bank account, which he needs to start a project, which is the main purpose of his travel to India. Sanju wins everybody's hearts by solving their problems. He creates an impromptu underwear ad to satisfy Mahesh & Satish's client. He also starts helping Raju, with his disability. He also promises Dadi that he will make Shivani smile one day. Sanju realizes that the family has no money. The business has been running in losses as Dilip is way too friendly to the employee Unions, which Mahesh hates. Mahesh says that he has been supporting the house for the last 3 years and now demands a split of the business between the brothers. Dadaji believes that Mahesh is selfish and a vagabond, while only Dilip is working hard to keep the business afloat. Mahesh asks Sanju to invest in the family business, but Sanju says that getting Shivani married to a rich businessman is a better route to success. Sanju asks for 15 days to complete Shivani's makeover. Sanju convinces Mahesh to invest in Sanju's business instead. Sanju transforms Shivani from a simple girl to a beautiful woman. And, in the process, unites the rest of the family. He brings Dadi and Ratna close to each other by getting them to see that they do care for each other. It was only the lack of communication that was keeping them apart for so long. Sanju gets Shivani out of her world of books and teaches her to life her life to the fullest. Sanju then gives Shivani a makeover with a hair cut and whole new modern wardrobe. He then prepares Shivani for interviews with potential grooms. Shivani needs a little help the next a boy named Mayur comes to meet her, but she does extremely well. Mayur finds her funny and engaging and decides to bring his parents for a formal discussion in the next meeting. Meanwhile, Sanju stakes the family jewels kept in Dadi's safe. Shivani has now fallen in love with Sanju. Shivani tells Dadi that she does not want to marry Mayur, so Dadi sends Sanju to convince Shivani. Sanju then brings Dadaji and Mahesh close together and makes them realize that they still love each other. Sanju then cures Satish of his stutter. Sanju wants Shivani to marry Mayur, as Mayur comes from a rich family. After the marriage, Mayur's family will help support Dilip's businesses and Mahesh promises to get funds for Sanju's business investment as well. More and more, Sanju realizes how dear this family has become to his heart. But still the little orphan Munni is at the mercy of Jogiya. There is trouble at Dilip's factory. The union workers go back on their word and demand more money to keep the factory open. The workers have been paid by Dilip's business rival and when his factories are shut, the rivals will take Dilip's orders and cause a loss of Rs 2.5 Crores to Dilip. Dilip bets Sanju to convince Shivani to Mayur, as his family can handle the business. Shivani is not OK to be sacrificed at the altar of family unity and happiness. Shivani challenges Sanju that she will agree to the marriage when Sanju admits that he loves Shivani. Sanju is forced to admit that he loves Shivani. The marriage between Shivani and Mayur is finalized and Sanju is given Rs 5 Lakhs to start the wedding preparations. Sanju is disgusted at how he has betrayed the trust of the family and admits the truth to Shivani. Sanju asks Shivani to forget him forever. Sanju robs the family safe that night and exits the house, but Raju follows Sanju and tries to stop him by walking after him. This is momentous as Raju could never walk prior to this. The family is indebted to Sanju and hail Raju's recovery as a miracle. Shivani tells the whole family that she loves Sanju. But this is when the real Sanjay Shastri reaches home and exposes Sanju's truth. He is closely followed by Jogiya, who arrives with his goons. Jogiya finds that Sanju had stolen nothing from the house, but only a few things that would remind him of the love and respect he got in the family. When Jogiya threatens Munni, Sanju attacks him and his goons and defeats them. The family asks Sanju to stay back. Shivani and Sanju reaffirm their love to each other.

With the help of garage owner, Sattarbhai all three of them concoct a plot to kidnap Rahul Saxena, hold him for ransom, while Raja takes his place. After kidnapping him, Raja does take his place with Rahul's family, his stepmom, Sharda, dad Dhanraj, uncle, aunt, and sweetheart Sona. Sona happens to be the daughter of Raja's mentor K.K., and this arouses anger with K.K. when he finds out that Raja has chosen Sona to seduce. Rupali tells Deepak that she hopes to marry a millionaire with a huge mansion, cars and servants. Prem signs Rupali exclusively for his agency for 3 years. As Prem cannot spend time with Pooja, he keeps running into Rupali everywhere and they end up spending time with each other. Prem and Rupali are attracted to each other and ultimately, they fall in love. Rupali doesn't know that Prem is lying to her and that he has a family. Rupali is much preferable to Prem due to her modern lifestyle and fashionable choices, as compared to Pooja. Prem takes Rupali to Switzerland for a photo shoot, but his mom Sushila (Himani Shivpuri) forces him to take Pooja as well. Prem convinces Pooja not to come due to the expenses involved which he estimates to be Rs 15 Lakhs. In Switzerland Prem meets Lakhan (Anil Kapoor) and Lovely (Tabu). Lakhan is family friends with Prem's mother and knows that if he sees Rupali, he will report it straight to his mother. As luck would have it Lovely befriends Rupali, but Rupali doesn't say that she is dating Prem. From Lovely, Rupali hears about Pooja Bhabhi. Prem explains that he has a dead brother who passed away in a car accident, and a widow Bhabhi and her 2 kids, whom Lovely and Lakhan keep referring in their discussions. Prem says that his mother is very orthodox, and this is why she never allowed his Bhabhi to get married again. As luck would have it, Prem and Lakhan are staying at the same hotel. Lakhan is a doctor, he finds out the truth, when Prem has a back spasm in his room with Rupali and Lakhan is called upon to treat him. When Lovely meets Rupali, she tells him that Prem is married and has 2 kids. When Rupali confronts Prem, Prem claims that he married Pooja under pressure as Pooja is a mentally sick person and effectively Prem has a non-existent marriage. This conversation is recorded on Billu's (Master Varun) camera accidentally (Billu is Lakhan and Lovely's son). Prem returns to India with Rupali and gifts her a mansion very close to his existing place where he lives with his family. Rupali is ecstatic and Prem even gifts her a car. Now Prem alternates between spending with Pooja and with Rupali. Prem tells Pooja that he is going for a long walk, and she makes him take their dog named Tiger along for company. This way, Tiger also sees Rupali's mansion. At home, Pooja watches the video with Lakhan and Lovely and sees this particular section where Prem and Rupali hug each other. Lakhan manages the situation by saying that Prem was harassed by Rupali and Prem was not at all interested in her. Pooja still confronts Prem, but Prem reminds her that it was Pooja who made him cancel her tickets. Pooja is ashamed when Prem says that she is doubting his character. Back at home, On Karva Chauth, a religious ceremony observed by married couples, Pooja discovers Prem at Rupali's house. Prem had gifted Rupali a house very close to his own and Rupali had insisted that Prem spends Karva Chauth with her. Pooja's dog, who had been to Rupali's earlier drags Pooja to her home and the truth is revealed to Pooja. She asks Prem to choose between his mistress and his family. Prem chooses Rupali and moves in with her, leaving his children and mother behind with Pooja. Pooja sends her mother-in-law and children to live with her husband and Rupali. They intentionally trouble Rupali and convince Prem that Rupali keeps them hungry and wants to poison and kill them. When Rupali tries to discipline the kids, it forces Prem to stop her and see her in a negative light. The trio also pretend that Rupali is making them do housework like slaves. Then they pretend as if Rupali has thrown them out of the house. Prem forces Rupali to apologize to his mom and kids. Prem then hits Rupali when his mom tells him that Rupali gave her poison pills for a headache. Prem is not willing to listen to Rupali's side of the story. Pooja, meanwhile, with the help of Prem's friend Lakhan, has a make-over, becoming a modern woman and taking on modeling assignments. She is the 51% stakeholder of Prem's modeling agency. Pooja takes operational control of the agency and cuts off Prem's source of funds that he uses to splurge on Rupali. Pooja also fires Rupali from the agency. Ultimately the relationship between Prem and Rupali breaks down. In the end, Prem realizes that Rupali only came to him since he gave her material things, while his wife stuck with him through thick and thin. Rupali realizes her mistake and gets back together with her ex-boyfriend, Deepak (Saif Ali Khan). This was designed by Pooja and Lakhan who contact Deepak and make him contact Rupali. In a twist, Lakhan befriends Rupali, affectionately calling her his sister. While hugging her, his wife Lovely (Tabu) walks upon them and misunderstands the situation. She leaves the house crying, and drives away in a car, which their son has tampered with and has managed to disable the brakes. Lakhan then chases after her and makes up with her, with Lakhan saying to Lovely that she is his "Biwi no. 1."

Thakur Suraj Pratap (Jackie Shroff) sees a young woman performing Pooja at a temple, and instantly falls in love with her. Thakur sends an emissary to Ramlal, who is delighted to give his daughter to Thakur in marriage, and the wedding is celebrated with due ceremony. Pooja is very fond of Raju and takes him along with her to her husband's house. This is the only "gift" that Pooja's impoverished parents are able to give their daughter at the wedding, and it is also beneficial for the young boy to grow up in a more affluent household. At the Thakur's palatial home, Pooja is greeted by Jyoti (Rambha), Thakur's kid sister. The years pass. Unfortunately, Pooja has been unable to bear children. Raju, now grown up, is intensely attached and loyal to Thakur, his brother-in-law. He and Thakur's sister Jyoti are in love. One day, Thakur meets Vaishali (Shweta Menon), a courtesan who sings and dances for a living. Vaishali has no relatives except one brother, an unscrupulous card-sharp named Gajendra (Mukesh Rishi) who lives off his sister's earnings. Vaishali seduces the Thakur and becomes his mistress. Her brother, posing as a respectable man, demands that Thakur marry Vaishali and make the relationship public. Thakur is reluctant. On the one hand, he possibly hopes that Vaishali will make him a father. On the other hand, he is attached to his dutiful wife and loving brother-in-law. Gajendra and his friends hatch a plot to kill two birds with one stone: to induce Thakur to marry Vaishali, and at the same time, break the strong relationship between Thakur and Raju. The conspirators make a fool of Raju, as a result of which he causes the police to raid Gajendra's house, on the allegation that the house is being used as a brothel. During the police raid, Raju is horrified to find that the 'customer' found in Vaishali's company is none other than his brother-in-law. Thakur is also angered to find that the person who has caused him this infamy and police entanglement is none other than Raju. In order to avoid legal proceedings, Thakur tells the police that he is present in the house in order to discuss the possibility of marrying Vaishali, the reason being that his wife has remained childless. Raju falls at Thakur's feet, begs forgiveness, and pleads with him not to take a second wife. His pleas fall on deaf ears; Thakur duly marries Vaishali and takes her home. Raju tells his parents of what has happened, of how Pooja now has a co-wife. They come to Thakur's mansion and create a scene. Annoyed at the commotion, Thakur tells Pooja to make her choice once and for all: she can either accept Vaishali as her co-wife and remain in his household with the respectability of being the senior wife, or depart with her parents for good. Pooja chooses to remain with her husband and co-wife, for as she says, that is her wifely duty; her husband's house is the only suitable residence for a married woman. Raju, who has lived in Thakur's household for many years, now goes away with his parents. These events cause a great rift between the two families, because of which the two lovers (Raju and Jyoti) are separated. Vaishali is ensconced in the Thakur's mansion, and her brother becomes Thakur's confidant. He now wants to marry Thakur's sister, Jyoti, so that he and his sister Vaishali will totally control the vast wealth of the Thakur family. A naive Thakur is taken in by his new brother-in-law's seeming decency, and it is arranged that Gajendra will marry Jyoti. However, Jyoti bravely refuses to marry anyone except Raju. She is supported by Pooja, who makes the point that it would be wrong and even sinful for Jyoti to marry one man while being in love with another; chasteness of the mind is as important as chasteness of the body. Thakur decides to delay the matter for the time being. Gajendra is aghast at this and makes a plan to abduct Jyoti so that afterward she will have no choice but to marry him. He reveals his plan to his sister and asks her to help him, but Vaishali has undergone a personality change after her marriage. She now wants to be a respectable woman and is extremely grateful to Thakur for having given her the chance to reform. She berates and opposes her brother, and makes it clear that she will inform her husband. Gajendra feels betrayed by his sister and sees that she has gained so much (Thakur's wealth, his social standing and the respectability of wife-hood), whereas he, Gajendra, has, in fact, lost his only source of income, which was the money from his sister's song-and-dance performances. In a fit of rage, he plunges a knife into Vaishali's stomach and kills her. He then makes an effort to frame Thakur for Vaishali's murder. But Pooja is a witness. Police arrests Thakur, but Raju turns himself by taking the blame. Gajendar tries to marry Pooja but Thakur intervenes. Pooja calls for Raju over temple loudspeaker & Raju comes & fucks everyone up. At Thakur's behest, Raju dispatches the villains, rescues Jyoti and protects Thakur's honor, gamely taking a bullet in the shoulder during the Big Fight. He survives to dance another song, and Thakur, now reconciled with his beloved and loyal Raju, gives Jyoti in marriage to him. Pooja testifies to police against Gajendar. Fayyuzi and Riyaz have an argument with Mammo, and she leaves for the Mosque at Haji Ali, but returns when both apologize to her. Although Mammo was born in Panipat during the British Raj, she was one of thousands of Muslims who left for Pakistan. She was married over there, could not conceive, was branded a "barren woman", and asked to leave. Having nowhere else to go, she came to live with her widowed sister in Bombay on a temporary Visa. Every month she would walk to the nearest Police Station and get an extension. She finally paid a Rs.4800/ as a bribe in order to get a permanent visa through Inspector Apte. When Apte was transferred, a new Police Inspector took over, processed her papers, held her to be an illegal immigrant, arrested her, had her escorted to the Bombay Central Railway Station, board the Frontier Mail, which would return her to Pakistan. Riyaz and Fayyuzi make every possible attempt to trace and bring her back, which was all in vain. For Menak Mulla, the purpose of telling these stories is to define the meaning of love. As it transpires, none of the stories Manek tells actually define Love.
