Orphaned Sohan Lal is a wealthy businessman based in Bombay. While on vacation in Kashmir, he meets with beautiful Neela, and after a few misunderstandings both fall in love, and get married. When they return to Bombay, his Manager, V.K. Saxena asks him to travel to London for some business, which he does. Three months later when he returns home, he finds that Neela has not come to receive him at the airport, then on the way home, he is attacked, abducted, and placed in a cell, where a woman, Gulabiya, tells him that she is his sweetheart. With her help he manages to escape, has an accident, ends up in hospital, where he gets to meet a woman who calls him her son. Baffled and exasperated at these turn of events, he returns home to get a very cold response from Neela, who is about to inherit Rs.70 Lakhs from her deceased uncle. Shyam travels to another town to meet the girl his mother would like him to marry. On his way, he meets a villager who traps Shyam in his home, with a view to force Shyam to marry his daughter. Shyam (Manoj Kumar) lives in the city with this mother (Lalita Pawar). He has come of age, so his mother wants him to get married. She even selects a girl for him, and asks him to go and meet her. shyam reluctantly agrees, and travels by train to see the girl and her parents. During his journey he comes across a con man, Banarsi Prasad (Inder Sen Johar), and his associates (Radha Kishan, and Vijay Dutt). He finds later that the con man and his associates had relieved him of his wallet. He comes across a man, living in a small village, with his daughter (Vijaya Choudhury). On the pretext of helping him, the father imprisons him, with a view of forcing him to marry his dauther. Dependent on his elder brother, Bishan, Ganga and his wife, Rameshwari, are abused and asked to leave. They work hard, set up their own business, and soon become wealthy enough to even support Bishan and his wife. A pregnant Rameshwari gets the news that her husband has been killed.
