The film is told from three perspectives: interviews with the show's three lead writers: Jess Oppenheimer (who was also the show runner) (Tony Hale), Madelyn Pugh (Alia Shawkat), and Bob Carroll Jr. (Jake Lacy); flashbacks; and preparations for a live filming in 1953. Today a show with 15 MM viewers is a mega hit. I Love Lucy had 60 MM viewers. In 1939, Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman), 28, is an actress contracted to RKO Pictures. She gets small parts in big studio productions, but featured mainly in low budget films which gives her the moniker "Queen of the B-Movies." She is cast in the comedy Too Many Girls, a film Pugh describes as a bad stage play made into an even worse movie. She meets one of the film's casts, charismatic 22-year-old Cuban singer Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem) and they fall in love instantly. Months after filming, they marry and buy a home in Hollywood. Arnaz has a successful stint fronting the Desi Arnaz Orchestra that tours around the country, while Ball continues her film career with little success. After Arnaz serves in World War II, he resumes his success with his orchestra, with Ball having to accompany him because of his infidelity. Ball finally gets a break when she is cast in 1942's The Big Street. The film is only a modest hit, but Ball's performance is praised. She meets with RKO President Charles Koerner (Brian Howe) confident she will get better scripts on par with established stars like Rita Hayworth and Judy Holliday. Instead, he terminates her contract as several actresses RKO loaned to other studios will be returning and there will be nothing for her (Plus she is 35 years old now). He suggests she use her voice for radio, and with no substantial film roles coming, she does. In 1948, she is cast in the radio show My Favorite Husband, which becomes a massive success. The show draws interest from CBS (Producers Howard Wenke (Clark Gregg) & Joe Strickland (Nelson Franklin)) and cigarette company Philip Morris (rep by Roger Otter (Jeff Holman)), who suggested to turn "My Favorite Husband" into a television show. Ball agrees but only if Arnaz plays her on-screen husband. The executives initially refuse because Arnaz is Cuban, but later concede after Ball refuses to give them the copyright of the show. She also hopes that working with Arnaz will decrease his infidelity and save their marriage. By 1953, the show is renamed I Love Lucy and becomes a smash hit with nearly 60 million viewers each week. A three-camera system, designed by Arnaz, allows viewers on the East Coast of United States to see the show live and without static (since the show is filmed on the West Coast). During production, Ball deals with several issues on the show; Vivian Vance (Nina Arianda) and William Frawley (J.K. Simmons), who play the Ricardos' married neighbors the Mertzes, do not get along, and Frawley is often drunk on the filming set. The crew goes about their normal production day. The dynamics are complex. Lucille is very particular that her character on the show should not come across as dumb or dimwitted. Ball also clashes with the directors (Donald Glass (Christopher Denham), to whom she declares that she has no confidence in his abilities to direct the show) and writers during table reads and scene blocking. Lucille has the ability to imagine the scenes as they are being narrated to her, and this gives her the ability to almost predict audience reactions to the jokes and sense check if certain situations and premises would make sense or not. Particularly troublesome is a scene where Arnaz comes home and covers Ball's eyes while she is setting the table, and she names several different men before he reveals it's him. The couple announce to CBS and Phillip Morris executives that Ball is pregnant. Jess is troubled as Desi wants the pregnancy to be shown on air, while Jess knows that CBS will never allow it. Jess and Desi clash over Lucille's rude attitude towards the other crew members of the show. The executives insist Ball hide the pregnancy behind large objects, but the couple refuses and proposes the pregnancy be shown (though they are never allowed to say the word "pregnant" on air). Lucille continues to undermine Donald's authority during the scene rehearsals. Lucille also comes down hard on Vivian for losing weight. She says that losing weight is not in line with Vivian's character of Ethel. She says that most women want to see themselves on the show, which is a fat, plump Ethel. Ball also deals with Arnaz staying out late, and a photo emerges in the tabloids of him with another woman. Desi tells Lucy that he plays cards on a boat with some other celebrities and sleeps there when he is too tired to come home, and that the picture was taken six months ago. She reluctantly believes him. Frawley has Ball understand that Arnaz's infidelity may stem from her making the business and creative decisions on the show which makes him feel emasculated, though she explains to everyone that he is the one who makes all the decisions. She asks Oppenheimer to give Arnaz a producer credit, hoping it will stop Arnaz's infidelity and save the marriage. Instead, Oppenheimer reminds Arnaz he has top billing, as he is the person saying "I" in I love Lucy, in attempt to placate him. Arnaz responds by sharply scolding Oppenheimer for trying to patronize him. The night of the live filming, a newspaper article deems Ball a Communist, though she was cleared during a HUAC hearing months ago. Ball admits she registered as a member of the Communist Party when she was young and influenced by a relative, but Arnaz insists she lie to the public and claim she accidentally marked the wrong box. Ball refuses to lie to the public, fearing she will be humiliated. Arnaz cancels his usual show warm up with the audience, and instead addresses the audience about the accusations (It's a big gamble, because if the gamble doesn't work, then the show is over then and there). He takes a live call with FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who assures all of the audience that Lucy has been cleared of all the charges. As the couple celebrates backstage, Ball shows Arnaz a handkerchief with lipstick on it. Arnaz says it's hers, but Ball shows him another handkerchief with her own lipstick on it, proving Arnaz's infidelity. When filming begins, Ball momentarily loses her concentration. They start over, with Ball being more focused. The film ends with a title card saying Ball filed for divorce after the taping of their last show in 1960.

Bill and Jeanie were together 33 years. It was only 60 days from her diagnosis until her death. One night, Bill walks into the bedroom of his teenage son Wes and says he can't do this any more. With little warning, the Blue '71 Mustang is towing a U-Haul trailer along the Pacific Coast headed toward Los Angeles. Paul, headmaster of St. Martin's, a private boys' school, dated Jeanie before Bill but eventually got over it. Bill has been offered a job teaching math. Bill and Wes move into a house and soon visit the school. Wes has to wear a uniform, and there is one in the lost and found. Paul tells Wes the boys all have to choose a sport, so Wes, who wasn't interested in sports, chooses cross country. Wes is the new kid but he soon makes friends. Girls from Cavalcade Academy come to St. Martin's for some classes. One of the girls is the very pretty Lacy, who is not very social. Wes is in French class with her. Ms. Roussel, the teacher, observes that Wes is one of her best students. This is because his mother was fluent. Lacy is failing so Ms. Roussel asks Wes to tutor her. After one of his classes, Bill is asked by Paul to get therapy since the school will cover it. He thinks Bill has been grieving too long and could use help. At home, Wes watches videos of his mother on his phone. One shows Bill and Jeanie having a picnic, and Jeanie has long red hair. The other shows Jeanie with no hair and her head covered, appearing to say goodbye to Wes and saying how much she loves him. Meanwhile, Bill is in the garage looking at a gigantic painting Jeanie did which is very colorful but does not obviously represent anything. Bill gives Wes the Mustang and starts riding a bike left behind at their house. Wes visits Lacy at home. Lacy is not very nice but she is expected to do this, so she lets Wes help her. Bill works on a garden, intending to grow vegetables to be eaten, and he comments on how much Jeanie liked tomatoes. After therapy, Dr. Rollens prescribed Lexapro but Bill doesn't like the way it makes him feel. On a later visit to Lacy, Wes sees blood on Lacy's arm. Lacy makes him leave and Lacy's younger sister Annabelle introduces herself. She is adorable and sarcastic. Coach Keyes is a jerk but he asks Ms. Roussel to go on a date. She pretends she needs to talk to Bill about a student and asks Bill to play along. Raffi and Gober are Wes' closest friends as they run cross country together. However, Wes is very slow and holds them back. He lets them go on ahead. As they return from a run Ms. Roussel asks Wes how Lacy is doing and Wes tries not to give too much information. After class, Ms. Roussel asks Lacy how she is doing and is very persistent, which causes Lacy to start crying, but it is not clear what is wrong. In several later scenes, Wes sees blood again and figures out Lacy is cutting herself. While Wes is at lunch with Raffi and Gober, Mason, who is a jerk, makes disparaging remarks about Lacy that Wes can't ignore. They fight and Paul gives them detention, and they have to spend time on the weekends picking up litter. Ms. Roussel meets Bill at the pharmacy after Dr. Rollens changes him to Cymbalta. They eventually go on several dates. One date is at a restaurant where the waiter speaks French very well and Bill has no idea what the two are saying. During one of his tutoring sessions with Lacy, Wes is invited to eat with the family. Lacy's mother Barbara is proper but critical. Lacy's father Davis is pleasant but thinks he should be treated better because he pays for everything. Wes learns they are separated but still live in the same house. In a later scene Lacy is comforting Annabelle as their parents fight. Paul and his wife Nancy invite Wes and Bill to a birthday party for Bill, and Wes and Bill both bring dates. Wes and Lacy go parking but Lacy doesn't even want to kiss. On a later visit by Wes, Lacy gives him a front passenger seat for the Mustang, since it didn't have one. Wes can't put it in properly because apparently it was a driver's seat, so anyone who sits there faces backwards. Wes, Lacy and Annabelle have a fun time riding before Wes has to join his friends for litter patrol. Annabelle helps make that fun. Mason comes to Lacy's house at night and calls to her. She is depressed enough that she goes out with Mason and his friends, who play loud music and drink in a van. While they are having fun around a fire, Lacy goes off by herself and calls Ms. Roussel to come get her. Mason brags at school about what he and Lacy supposedly did. Wes comes to Lacy's house and says he will no longer tutor her. After Bill and Ms. Roussel end up in bed, Bill feels guilty and breaks up with her. Dr. Rollens recommends a grief support group. After some time has passed, Bill is teaching his class and can't seem to remember anything. Then he passes out. He ends up in the hospital and Dr. Rollens thinks it is time for desperate measures, including electroshock therapy. After treatment, Bill seems to have given up on life. As he and Wes eat a meal, Wes angrily demands he do something. If he's going to just give up and die, do it now. He went through something like this with his mom, so Wes is ready for all of this to be over. Bill seems to be getting better. The movie alternates between Wes participating in a race and Bill going through some possessions in the garage, with flashbacks to when Jeanie was alive. Bill calls Michael and says the museum would be a great place for all of Jeanie's art. Wes is shown passing other runners. He is in first place at the end and Bill is there to congratulate him. Bill returns to teaching and he is willing to date Ms. Roussel again. Lacy passes French without any further help from Wes, who is interested in spending time with her also. Both couples go for ice cream in the Mustang, with the passenger seat still backwards.

Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd), a real estate agent, just got engaged to his girlfriend Zooey Rice (Rashida Jones). Zooey is ecstatic about the engagement and calls her friends Denise (Jaime Pressley) and Hailey (Sarah Burns) to tell them about it, but Peter does not seem to have any close friends to share the good news with. Peter is apparently more adept at getting along with women and has a history of allowing his male friends to fall by the wayside when he is involved with a woman. Peter realizes he needs to find male friends in order to have a best man for his upcoming wedding. Peter turns to his gay younger brother, Robbie (Andy Samberg), for advice on dealing with men. He attends a Major League Soccer game with a man named Lonnie (Joe Lo Truglio), who has a rather loud and annoyingly high-pitched voice. He has dinner with another man named Doug (Thomas Lennon), who he soon discovers is bisexual. He also has lunch with an elderly man named Mel (Murray Gershenz). He even joins Denise's somewhat hostile husband, Barry (Jon Favreau), and his friends for their poker night. Peter inadvertently projectile-vomits on Barry after winning a beer-drinking contest, prompting an angry Barry to kick him out of his house. Feeling rejected, Peter is about to give up, when during an open house at Lou Ferrigno's mansion which Peter is trying to sell, he meets Sydney Fife (Jason Segel), an investor who is attending the showing simply to pick up divorced women and take advantage of the free food. The two hit it off very well and exchange business cards. The two quickly become friends, and Sydney eventually invites Peter into his "man cave," a space in his garage where he keeps his collection of musical instruments and various other belongings. Peter finally introduces Sydney to Zooey at their engagement party, where Hailey makes advances on Sydney, who appears uninterested. The meeting takes an unfortunate turn when a nervous Sydney makes a very awkward toast. The next night, Peter is watching TV with Zooey, when Sydney calls and talks Peter into joining him for a Rush concert. Hesitant to break his plans, Peter reluctantly agrees to go on the condition that he can bring Zooey. During the concert, Peter and Sydney bond, leaving Zooey feeling ignored. The next day, while shopping for tuxedos, Sydney asks Peter why he is marrying Zooey, and also asks for an $8,000 loan. After some thought, Peter decides to lend Sydney the money, and later grants him the honor of being best man at his wedding. Zooey, meanwhile, has become suspicious of Sydney, especially after he gets into a fight with Lou Ferrigno (as himself), which may cost Peter the exclusive sales rights to Ferrigno's house. Peter tells Zooey that he lent Sydney money and asks her if she knows why they are getting married, Zooey leaves to stay at Denise and Barry's house. Peter leaves for work the next morning only to discover that Sydney has used the $8,000 loan to purchase several ridiculous billboard advertisements promoting Peter's real estate business. Still upset over his fight with Zooey, Peter confronts Sydney and decides to end their friendship. Peter then patches things up with Zooey. Upon arriving at work, Peter discovers that Sydney's billboard advertising campaign was successful, as he immediately begins receiving more clients and offers on the Ferrigno house. Encouraged by this career boost, Peter finally stands up to his insufferable colleague, Tevin Downey (Rob Huebel), who has been badgering Peter for half the selling rights to the lucrative Ferrigno property. When Tevin makes one final attempt to get a piece of the Ferrigno listing, Peter slaps him across his face and tells him to stay away from it. While Zooey and Peter prepare for the wedding, Sydney finds himself alone and desperate to hang with someone, but phone calls to his other friends, who all have wives and children, prove futile, and he even out of boredom and depression, watches Chocolat, which is a movie Peter mentioned watching with Zooey on what he felt was the best night of his life in the last couple of years. Peter feels bad about fighting with Sydney but does not re-invite him to the wedding. Instead, he assembles an array of random groomsmen that includes Robbie, Father Oswald (J. K. Simmons), Doug, Lonnie, Mel, and Ferrigno. Before the wedding, Zooey sees Peter looking forlorn, clearly missing his friend Sydney. She calls and invites Sydney, who is, unbeknownst to them, already en route to the wedding. Just before the vows are to be taken, Sydney makes a dramatic entrance via moped. He informs Peter and Zooey that he is, in fact, a successful investor and returns the money he borrowed from Peter, stating that the billboards were the couple's wedding present. Peter and Zooey declare their love to each other, Sydney assumes the role of best man, and the wedding commences. As the end credits begin to roll, we see the wedding reception, where Peter and Sydney join the hired band (played by OK Go) in a rendition of the Rush song "Limelight" and even pull Zooey on stage to join them. Meanwhile Hailey and Lonnie get together, Denise ends up throwing up on Barry, whose anger over it subsides when she mentions she's pregnant, and finally when the song ends, Sydney attempts to toast the newlyweds and Peter runs to frantically stop him as the screen cuts out (still remembering Sydney's ill-advised toast at the engagement dinner.)

After returning home from the Gulf War, Army Ranger Jim Davis (Christian Bale) is having a hard time adjusting to civilian life. Jim is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and having flashbacks and nightmares of the killing he did during the war. Jim's money is running dry, and he is looking for a job. Jim wants to be a policeman, and he has applies for a job with the L.A.P.D. While waiting for the job to come through, Jim hangs out with his best friend and homie brother, Mike Alonzo (Freddy Rodriguez). Jim and Mike begin to cruise the mean streets of South Central, Los Angeles, and they fall back into their old life of crime. Jim doesn't get the job with the L.A.P.D., but he does get a job offer from Homeland Security. The only problem that Jim has in taking the job is that he can't get the war out of his mind. Brad Pitt has been working for a mobster who is in prison because Pitt accidentally ran a red light and hit the mobster's car. When the police arrived, they found a body in the mobster's trunk. The guy was alive but was obviously going to be murdered. The mobster was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Pitt has been forced to work for the mobster to pay for having caused him to go to prison. Julia Roberts is Pitt's girlfriend and they have been having difficulties with their relationship. Roberts now wants to go to Vegas but Pitt has to make one last trip for the mobster or he will be killed. Roberts throws Pitt out and heads to Vegas alone and Pitt heads to Mexico on his last mission. Pitt has been given orders by the 2nd in command (Bob Balaban) to pick up a gun called "The Mexican" and bring it back. Pitt gets to Mexico and picks up the gun but unfortunately, the man he gets it from is accidentally killed by a stray bullet fired during a Mexican celebration. Pitt calls Balaban and reports the problem and while he's on the phone, his car is stolen, gun and all. Pitt sets out after the car to try and retrieve the gun. Meanwhile, on the way to Vegas Roberts is in a restroom when a gunman grabs her and before anything happens, James Gandolfini saves her by shooting the man. Gandolfini claims that he is working for the mobster and that his name is Leroy. He is a very sensitive, gay psychotic killer who is there to protect Roberts. They get to Vegas and along the way Gandolfini picks up a gay postal worker who spends a romantic evening with Gandolfini. In the morning Roberts and Gandolfini go out for breakfast and while they're eating, the gunman goes to their hotel room and kills the postal worker by throwing him off the balcony. Roberts and Gandolfini get back and this time Gandolfini shoots the man in the head to kill him for good. Roberts and Gandolfini are told by Balaban to head to Mexico and meet Pitt because things have gone wrong. In Mexico, Pitt has recovered the gun and then lost it a second time. A man from the mob has come down to help him. Pitt knows the man had been sent to kill him so he tricks the man, gets the gun and drives to the airport to leave Mexico. Unfortunately, Pitt has the wrong passport and can't get on his flight. He goes back to the small town where he left the man handcuffed, but he's gone. Gandolfini and roberts meet up with Pitt and for some reason, Pitt does not tell him he has the gun but will take him to where it's hidden. Pitt has an argument with Roberts and nearly wrecks the car causing a blowout. While Pitt is changing the tire, Gandolfini pulls a gun on him. Roberts is furious with Pitt and has been walking away. Pitt hasn't seen Gandolfini's gun yet but Gandolfini sees Roberts walking away and puts his gun away. He knows that Roberts loves Pitt and he just can't kill him. Gandolfini helps Pitt change the tire and now Pitt pulls a gun on Gandolfini. Gandolfini sees the gun in the reflection on the hubcap and turns to fire but Pitt shoots first and kills Gandolfini. It seems that Pitt had once met Leroy and knew that Gandolfini was not who he claimed to be. He realized that he was there to kill him. Roberts is extremely upset but Pitt and her stay together trying to decide what to do now. In their hotel room, Pitt looks out the window and see someone trying to break into his car. the same person that stole it the first time. He goes down to stop him and is punched in the face (twice) and knocked out. He is driven to a very nice ranch house and there he meets the mob boss who has been let out of prison - Gene Hackman. In prison Hackman was befriended by the grandson of the ranchowner. the son was killed saving the life of Hackman in prison. The ranch owner is the grandson of the man who made "The Mexican." We are now told the true legend of The mexican. It was made by a gunsmith as a gift to a rich noble so the nobleman's son would marry his daughter. Unfortunately, the daughter was in love with the gunsmith's assistant. On the wedding day the nobleman's son is presented with the gun and it fails to work. He notices his future bride and the assistant staring at each other. He realizes they are in love and shoots and kills the assistant. The girl picks up the gun, puts it to her head and shoots herself. The gun contained two bullets, one of which has now been used. Hackman has been trying to get the gun to give it back to the rightful owner, the great grandson. Balaban has been trying to get it to sell for profit. Roberts is back in the hotel room and has the gun tied to her leg when Balaban appears on the balcony. Roberts hides between 2 mattresses. We next see Pitt and some Mexican employees of the ranchowner driving into town. Balaban is standing beside his car and asks Pitt where the gun is. Pitt says only Roberts knows and Balaban opens the trunk to reveal Roberts. Unfortunately for Balaban, when he opens the trunk, Roberts has the gun pointed right at him. She shoots the 2nd and last bullet, hitting him in the throat. We hardly know he's been shot until he opens his mouth and smoke comes out. The ranchhands take the gun back to the ranch and a brass ring that had fallen off the gun is picked up by Pitt. He uses it as a wedding band and places it on Roberts finger. The final scene shows the two of them driving off - arguing...
