A young boy searches a future world wasteland for a rumored cure for his dying mother. After evading violent raiders on motorbikes led by the Warlord (James Franco) and his enforcer (Cliff "Method Man" Smith), Prince meets Ash (Suki Waterhouse), the Warlord's robot sex companion-assassin who's in search of her own soul. As Prince is captured by the Druglord (Milla Jovovich), the Warlord's forces roar in - and Prince fights to save the remnants of humanity.

The film starts with a shot of an abandoned factory. It's rundown and dilapidated, with nobody paying it any mind. Then an explosion goes off, blasting a hole through the walls. Hal Solinski (Dennis Quaid) is called from the school because his adopted son Elijah/Eli (Myles Truitt) has gotten in trouble for fighting. Eli claims that the kid he attacked was speaking ill of his mother. Hal tries to give his son advice so that he can keep his head up. He also lets Eli know that his older brother Jimmy (Jack Reynor) is getting out of prison after six years, and it's clear that there is a strain on both Hal and Eli when it comes to Jimmy. Eli rides his bike around the factory and goes inside. He finds dead bodies in there next to a large gun. One of the bodies wearing a helmet then moves when Eli goes for the gun, but Eli hops back on his bike and escapes. Jimmy comes home and has an awkward and tense dinner with Hal and Eli. Afterwards, he attempts to bond with Eli. Later, Jimmy goes alone to his former employer, a crime lord named Taylor Balik (James Franco). Jimmy owes Taylor $60,000, and Taylor threatens to get it out of Hal or Eli. Jimmy says he does have the money, just not with him. While Eli is not home, Jimmy tries to ask Hal to let him have $60,000 from his personal safe to pay Taylor off. Hal refuses and even throws Jimmy out of the house for still being involved in illegal activity. Meanwhile, Eli finds the gun again and takes it with him. Hal takes Eli to work with him, but he notices something odd and tells Eli to wait in the car. He goes into his office to find Jimmy with Taylor and his brother Dutch (Gavin Fox) trying to break into the safe. After a confrontation, Taylor shoots Hal. Jimmy attacks Taylor, causing him to shoot Dutch. Hal dies, and Jimmy runs to the truck while Taylor holds a dying Dutch in his arms. Jimmy drives off with his share of the money and he goes away with Eli. Jimmy and Eli go on the run, with Jimmy not telling Eli what has happened to Hal. They go to a strip club to hide out for the time being. They meet a dancer, Milly (Zoe Kravitz), who becomes friendly with them. However, Jimmy gets drunk and starts to get fresh by trying to go on stage to dance with her. The club owner, Lee (Romano Orzari), goes to handle Jimmy with his bouncers, but Jimmy continues to act cocky until he starts getting pounded. Eli runs to grab the gun and threaten the bouncers with it. A falling pool cue startles him, and he fires the weapon at the table. From a distance, the two helmet-wearing figures ("Cleaners") detect the weapon being used. Jimmy, Eli, and Milly all run out, but Jimmy forgets the bag with all the money in it at the club. The three stay at a motel for the time being. Jimmy leaves at one point and gets into trouble, leading to his arrest. Eli sees the news on TV and learns of what happened to Hal, and he goes to find Jimmy. At the station, Taylor and his goons find Jimmy and try to kill him. Eli arrives with the gun and blasts the thugs to ashes as he gets Jimmy out safe. Outside, the police are gathering for a standoff while the Cleaners are speeding their way through the barricade. Jimmy and Eli almost run out, but the police spot them and force them to stand down, just as Taylor has found Jimmy and aims his gun to kill him. The Cleaners show up with a grenade and throw it, causing time to stop for everyone except for Eli. Taylor has fired his gun and the bullet is heading toward Jimmy. The Cleaners then reveal themselves as being one male and one female (Michael B. Jordan and Lily Gao). The Male Cleaner tells Eli that there's a reason why only he can hold and operate the gun (it cut Jimmy when he tried to use it), and that's because Eli is from a dimension like the cleaners where they are able to use those weapons and also have extraordinary abilities. He tells Eli that he can join them when he is ready, and they take the weapon back. The Female Cleaner opens up a portal to the other dimension, but before they leave, she moves the bullet toward Taylor's head. Time goes back to normal, and the bullet kills Taylor, just as the SWAT team blows the door open. Jimmy is taken into custody again. Agent Morgan Hunter (Carrie Coon) talks to Eli and says Jimmy will be going away, but not for too long. She asks Eli what happened, but he won't tell her. Milly then arrives for Eli. As he sees her, his hand glows with the same symbol as the Cleaners.

In 1937, a soldier (Bill Hader) in a military facility (which is underground and hidden in the middle of nowhere) is being observed through a two-way mirror smoking marijuana and revealing in his euphoria what he hates about the army. The soldier complains that the army has all men, not enough women, is too secretive, and wants to share "item 9" (code for marijuana) with the whole world. A high-ranking officer closes the project, disposes of the soldier and deems marijuana illegal. Seventy years later in 2007, Dale Denton (Seth Rogen), a subpoena server wants marijuana to be made legal as he argues that everyone loves smoking weed. Dale says that marijuana makes everything better like food, music, sex and even bad movies. Dale believes that the current system is putting money in hands of the criminals and is forcing ordinary people to deal with the criminals. Dale is 25 and is dating an 18-year-old high school girl named Angela. Angela wants Dale to visit her parents, but he keeps making excuses about work. Meanwhile Angela's lab partner Clark (Arthur Napiontek) is hitting on Angela. Dale promises Angela that he will drop by for dinner with her parents that night. Dale visits his drug dealer, Saul Silver (James Franco), to buy marijuana. Saul sells Dale a Pac of the Pineapple express blend, a rare kind of strain that recently hit the market. Saul brags that he is the only dealer in town to have this strain of weed. Saul lures Dale to smoke a joint with him. While talking, Saul learns that Dale is a process server and has to wear disguises to serve legal papers to their intended recipients in person. Saul says he may know Dale's next customer, to whom Dale is serving some court papers, Ted Jones (Gary Cole). Saul buys his supply from Red, who buys it from Ted. At Ted's house, Dale is waiting outside to finish his joint when a police car pulls up. Dale witnesses Ted and a police officer, Carol Brazier (Rosie Perez), shoot and kill a rival Korean gangster. While fleeing, Dale leaves behind his roach (joint) containing Pineapple Express, the rare strain of marijuana he just purchased from Saul. Ted identifies the strain and sends his henchmen Budlofsky (Kevin Corrigan) and Matheson (Craig Robinson) to Red (Danny McBride), a dealer who tells them about Saul. Dale rushes back to Saul & at his apartment, Dale learns Ted is a drug lord and could trace the roach (as only Red and Saul have the Pineapple Express strain). Dale and Saul decide they must flee the city. They attempt to hide in the woods where Dale's car battery dies. Dale and Saul visit Red, who was already working with Budlofsky and had ratted Saul out. Red reveals that Ted knows who they are and intends to kill them. Dale and Saul escape, as Budlofsky comes in. Budlofsky and Matheson torture Red for information and both shoot him in the abdomen. Ted orders Budlovsky to kill Red. Meanwhile the Korean gang members are outside Ted's house and listening to all his conversations. Believing Dale's high-school girlfriend Angie to be in danger, he and Saul travel to her home. Dale shows up for dinner at his girlfriend's Angie (Amber Heard) parents' house and obviously it goes bad as Dale is bleeding and he stinks. Angie's dad pulls out his shotgun and starts shooting at Dale & Saul, but Dale manages to convince him to calm down. As Budlofsky reaches Angie's house (tracking Dale's car), Dale and Saul leave. Angie's family goes to a hotel. Meanwhile Ted and Carol talk to the Korean mob boss Cheung (Dana Lee) and tell him that his assassin is dead. Ted promises retaliation if Cheung does not withdraw Dale. Ted thinks Dale is another assassin sent by Cheung. Cheng decides to attack Ted. Dale and Saul decide they must leave the city. They sell Pineapple Express to raise bus fare, but Dale is arrested by Police Liaison Officer Bobbra (Cleo King). Dale tells Bobbra that he witnessed Brazier and Ted murder a man. Bobbra has long been suspicious of Brazier's corruption and says she will investigate. However, Saul, thinking that it is Brazier driving, hijacks the police car. Brazier hears on police radio of Dale's arrest and pursues Dale and Saul in a high-speed chase, but they escape. After Dale and Saul argue, they call each other stupid and the main reason of why they both are in this mess. Dale and Saul split up, and Saul is kidnapped. Budlofsky was waiting at Saul's grandmother's retirement home, when Saul visited her. Saul is held in Ted's lair beneath the same military facility from 1937. Dale enlists Red's help to rescue Saul. Red had miraculously survived 2 gunshots to his body and arms himself and Dale and drives Dale to the lair where Saul has been kept. Red backs out at the last minute and Dale is captured by Budlofsky. While Dale and Saul are waiting to be killed, they reconcile and plan an escape. Korean mobsters attack the barn to avenge their fellow gangster's death, the murder that Dale witnessed. Dale and Saul free themselves but are caught by Matheson (Craig Robinson). Matheson is Budlofsky's assistant and has been working with this entire time. A brawl ensues between the attacking Asians and Ted's forces who retaliate. There are heavy casualties on both sides. Saul takes on Brazier, while Dale combats Ted. Both manage to come out on top, but Matheson has the gun on Saul. Red reappears and drives his car through the barn, killing Matheson and saving Saul, but is shot by Brazier. A mobster sets off a bomb killing Ted and setting fire to the barn. Red's car explodes and lands on Brazier, killing her. Dale carries Saul from the burning barn and Red, wounded but still alive, also escapes and reconciles with them. They talk about their adventure over breakfast at a diner before Saul's grandmother picks them up and takes them to the hospital.

With no navy to rescue them, they were trapped. US decided to focus on Europe and Hitler first. Gen McCarthur is forced to leave the Philippines to Australia and he vows to return. After 4 months, surviving US and Philippino troops surrender to the Japanese Imperial Army. Japanese cant house 70K POWs and hike them on a 60 mile march. 15K men died on what became known as the Bataan death march. Survivors are herded into camps at O'Donnell, Cabanatuan and Palawan. Thousands more die from death, abuse and starvation. By 1944, the tide changes with US victory in Europe. Us focuses on Japan and Japanese become more desperate. They prepare to defend their country to the death (fueled by propaganda that Americans will show no mercy) In Aug 1944, Tokyo war ministry releases a memo on policy towards POWs. Policy is to kill them all and not leave any traces. The film opens with the massacre of prisoners of war on Palawan by the Kempeitai, the Imperial Japanese military's secret police (though factually, it was committed by the Japanese Fourteenth Area Army). Kampeitai put POWs inside air raid shelters, block it from both sides, and set fire to it.. Set in the Philippines in 1945 towards the end of WWII, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Mucci (Benjamin Bratt) and Captain Robert Prince (James Franco), the 6th Ranger Battalion (based in Luzon, Philippines) undertake a daring rescue mission against all odds. Traveling thirty miles behind enemy lines, they intend to liberate over 500 American Soldiers from the notorious Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp in the most audacious rescue ever. In the winter of 1944, World War II was coming to a close. The Japanese held some of the American prisoners who had survived the Bataan Death March in a notorious POW camp at Cabanatuan and subjected them to harsh treatment; many prisoners were also stricken with malaria. At the time of the raid the camp held about 500 prisoners. Meanwhile at Lingayen Gulf, the 6th Ranger Battalion under Lt. Col Mucci is ordered by Lt. Gen. Walter Krueger (Dale Dye) to liberate all of the POWs at Cabanatuan prison camp before they are killed by the Japanese. The film chronicles the efforts of the Rangers, Alamo Scouts from the 6th Army and Filipino guerrillas as they undertake the Raid at Cabanatuan. Major Robert Lapham (Brett Tucker) is a stay behind from the Bataan campaign and has organized Filipino guerrillas as a source of intel for the US forces. Lapham says as US forces advance Japanese are likely to murder the 500 men at Cabanatuan, rather than release them. The men at Palawan were killed on the rumor that McCarthur had invaded. Prince is to design the raid plan. Lapham says that the toughest part is the last 800 yards, with no cover, only plain open land, leading to the POW camp. Throughout the film, the viewpoint switches between the POWs at Cabanatuan, the Rangers, the Filipino resistance and the Japanese. The POWs are Cabanatuan are led by Major Daniel Gibson (Joseph Fiennes) and Captain Redding (Marton Csokas). Daniel contacts Margaret via the Philippino resistance. Margaret is the wife of Daniel's CO, who died in combat. Daniel has feelings for Margaret, but never acted on them. In particular, the film covers the resistance work undertaken by nurse Margaret Utinsky (Connie Nielsen), who smuggled medicine into the POW camps (she risks her life in Manila to procure the Quinine). The Kempeitai arrested her and sent her to Fort Santiago prison. Mucci green lights Prince's plan. Corporal Alridge (Clayne Crawford) & Private First Class Lucas (Sam Worthington) are given a mortar to carry. Meanwhile the Japanese Army retreats from Cabanatuan. The POWs think McCarthur got them on the run. In the officer's mess they find tons of provisions meant for the POWs (Japanese were starving them deliberately). Shortly thereafter the Kempeitai move in and take control of the camp. Daniel is told by Lieutenant Hikobe (Masa Yamaguchi) to cooperate till the US forces arrive, but he intends to kill all POWs (he was there at Palawan). Meanwhile Mucci's forces are 11 miles away from the POW and making slow progress due to movement of 30K Japanese troops in the area. Mucci reaches a village where he meets Captain Juan Pajota (Cesar Montano) of Philippino army. The Japanese had killed 100 people in the village, for helping Juan's men. Mucci also rendezvous with Lapham and his men who come with more intel on the camp, but the exact details are still missing. Juan tells them to delay the attack on the camp since a whole division of Japanese Army is likely to pass in front of the camp in the next 24 hrs. Juan tells Prince that most of the POWs are crippled or sick and they will need carts to move them and bring them back to Platero village. Hikobe gets news from Manila on Margaret's arrest and tries to get Daniel to confess and give the names of her collaborators. Daniel refuses. He is sick with malaria. Hikobe had captured Margaret already and hence all quinine stolen by her was also confiscated. Her courier to Cabanatuan was also captured and killed. Thus, no medicine was making its way to the POW camps. Hokibe receives the fuel shipments and awaits orders from Tokyo to liquidate prisoners. Redding tries to escape and is captured. Hokibe kills 10 POWs as a lesson to the rest. The day before the raid, Juan confirms that the camp has over 300 Japanese and just 1/2 mile away from the camp is a large Japanese Army contingent with over 1000 men. That contingent is just beyond a small bridge that Mucci has to hold, if he has any hope of attacking the camp. Juan and his men volunteer to hold the bridge by damaging it with explosives and positioning his men at the other side of the bridge to catch the Japanese in a crossfire. The raid starts at 1730 .. Mucci arranges for a plane to fly over the camp at that time, to distract the guards and allowing his men to low crawl close to the camp's main gate. units are deployed to hold the bridge and the highway on the other side of the camp. Prince will be the last man out. Lieutenant Riley (Craig McLachlan) is to start the raid at 1930 hours once he is in position on the main gate. But he sends recon to check if all other teams are in place. this causes a 10 mins delay. Rily takes the first shot. Juan and his men blow up the bridge. Altridge and Lucas blow up the trucks and the tanks inside the camp. Things go to plan and the Japanese soldiers at the camp are neutralized and the rescue begins. Mucci protects the flanks of Juan and his men as he holds the bridge. Hokibe tries to kill the POWs via mortar fire, but Riley flanks Hokibe's position and gets into hand-to-hand combat with him. Riley kills Hokibe with his own gun. Prince signals the end of the raid with a red flare over the camp. 2 men died in the raid. By the next day, the POWs reach American front lines. Margaret comes to meet Daniel, but Daniel doesn't survive the night. 511 POWs were rescued. 21 Philippino resistance fighters were killed. Mucci and Prince were awarded the Distinguished service cross for leading the raid. Margaret was eventually released but spent six weeks recovering from gangrene as a result of injuries sustained from beatings. Once recovered, she escaped to Bataan, where she served as a nurse with the Philippine Commonwealth troops and recognized guerrilla units until liberation in February 1945.
