His wife Sarah (Valerie Jane Parker) is a druggie and gets her hits from Chainsaw Angus (Frank Grillo) who is a drug dealer. Earl gets into a fight with Angus to kick him out of his house, but is defeated when Angus is helped by his sister Delia (Margaret Qualley). Angus beats up Delia as she failed to warn him about Earl's entrance into the house. Angus and Delia approach Eldon (Pat Healy) and ask for his help to front the money to enter the fight. But Eldon owes money to his own creditors and refuses to help. Angus beats up Eldon, badly. Delia ties him up, has sex with him and when he is about to cum, she shoots him dead. Meanwhile earl is robbing small businesses cash registers to keep his house going. He uproots his own family and shifts into a hotel. He goes with his son to run errands, when his car dies, so he steals a cop car to keep moving. Whalen (James Badge Dale) is the sheriff of the county where Angus and Earl are operating. In a fit of rage and angered by his constant put downs, Delia shoots Angus, but he survives. Earl finds practice fights to prep for the big event, but eventually his stolen cop car is detected and he is back on the run with his son. His fight fixer Poe (James Landry Hébert) wants to take him to big fight called the DonnyBrook, but wants Earl to find a place to keep his son. Meanwhile Delia catches up with Earl at the practice fight. Poe suggests an old couple who can care for Earl's son while they all head to Donnybrook. But now Angus is on Delia's trail and finds Poe. Whalen tracks down Angus, but is shot by him. Angus is now on Delia'a trail who is with Earl and his son. Angus finds Earl's son cycling in the woods and shoots him dead. But by then Earl and Delia are already on their way to Donnybrook. Angus finds Delia at the Donnybrook, takes her into the woods and strangles her. He then enters the ring himself. After the prelim rounds when only Angus and Earl are left, Angus gives Earl his son's locket, telling him that he killed him. After a brutal fight, Earl kills Angus in the ring.

They never returned; Legion and Eagle simply vanished into the mists. As three US servicemen - Marine Private First Class Ira Hayes, Private First-Class Rene Gagnon, and Navy Corpsman John "Doc" Bradley are feted as heroes in a war bond drive, they reflect on their experiences via flashback. After training at Camp Tarawa in Hawaii, the 28th Marine Regiment 5th Marine Division sails to the small island of Iwo Jima as part of an invading armada. Tough Japanese resistance is expected, and the Navy bombards suspected Japanese positions for three days. Sergeant Mike Strank is put in charge of Second Platoon. The next day, February 19, 1945, the Marines land in Higgins boats. The beaches are silent and Private First Class Ralph "Iggy" Ignatowski wonders if the defenders are all dead, before Japanese heavy artillery and machine guns open fire on the advancing Marines and the Navy ships. Casualties are heavy but the beaches are secured. Two days later the Marines attack Mount Suribachi under a rain of Japanese artillery and machine gun fire, as the Navy bombards the mountain. Doc saves the lives of several Marines under fire, which later earns him the Navy Cross. Finally, the mountain is secured. On February 23, the platoon under command of Sergeant Hank Hansen is ordered to climb Mount Suribachi. They reach the top and hoist the United States flag atop the mountain to cheers from the beaches and the ships. Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, who witnesses the flag raising as he lands on the beach, requests the flag for himself. Colonel Chandler Johnson decides his 2nd Battalion deserves the flag more. Rene is sent up with Second Platoon to replace the first flag with a second one for Forrestal to take. Mike, Doc, Rene and three other marines (Corporal Harlon Block, Private First-Class Franklin Sousley and Private First Class Ira Hayes), are photographed by Joe Rosenthal as they raise the second flag. On March 1, Second Platoon are ambushed from a Japanese machine gun nest. During the fight over the nest Mike is hit by a U.S. Navy shell and dies from his wounds. Later that day Hank is shot in the chest and dies almost instantly, and Harlon is killed by machine gun fire. Two nights later while Doc is helping a wounded Marine, Iggy is abducted by Japanese troops and dragged into a tunnel. Doc finds his viciously mangled body a few days later. On March 21 Franklin is killed by machine gun fire and dies in Ira's arms. Of the eight men in the squad only three are left: Doc, Ira and Rene. A few days after Franklin's death, Doc is wounded by artillery fire while trying to save a fellow corpsman. He survives and is sent back home. On March 26, the battle ends and the U.S. Marines are victorious. After the battle the press gets hold of Rosenthal's photograph. It is a huge morale booster, and newspapers all over the country ask for prints. Rene is asked to name the six men in the photo: he identifies himself, Mike, Doc and Franklin, but misidentifies Harlon as Hank. Rene believes that Ira is the sixth man in the photograph; when he tells Ira this, Ira furiously denies it, insisting that it was Harlon in the photograph, not him. Rene pleads with Ira that as flag raisers they will both be sent home, but Ira reacts by holding a bayonet to Rene's throat, telling Rene he will kill him if he names Ira as the man in the photograph. Rene initially refuses to identify the sixth man but when he is threatened with being sent back to the fighting, he names Ira. Doc, Ira and Rene are sent home as part of the seventh bond tour drive to raise money for the war effort. When they arrive to a hero's welcome in Washington, Doc notices that Hank's mother is on the list of mothers of the dead flag raisers. Ira angrily denounces the bond drive as a farce. The men are reprimanded by Bud Gerber of the Treasury Department, who tells them that the country cannot afford the war and if the bond drive fails the U.S. will abandon the Pacific and their sacrifices will be for nothing. The three agree not to tell anyone that Hank was not in the photograph. As the three are sent around the country to raise money and make speeches, Ira is guilt-ridden, facing discrimination as a Native American and haunted by memories of the battle. He descends into alcoholism and throws up one night in front of General Alexander Vandegrift, commandant of the Marine Corps. A furious Vandegrift orders to have Ira sent back to his unit and the bond drive continues without him. After the war, the three survivors return to their homes. Ira still struggles with alcoholism and is never able to escape his unwanted fame. One day after being released from jail, he hitchhikes over 1,300 miles to Texas to see Harlon Block's family. He tells Harlon's father that his son was indeed at the base of the flag in the famous photograph. In 1954, the USMC War Memorial is dedicated and the three flag raisers see each other one last time. In 1955 Ira dies of exposure after a night of drinking. That same year Doc drives to the town where Iggy's mother lives to tell her how Iggy died, though it is implied that he does not tell her the truth. Rene attempts a business career but finds that the opportunities and offers he received during the bond drive are rescinded. He spends the rest of his life as a janitor. Doc, by contrast, is successful. He buys a funeral home and runs it for the rest of his life. In 1994, on his deathbed, he tells his story to his son James and in a final flashback to 1945, the men swim in the ocean after raising the flags.

A prologue introduces the Nicklebys, country gentry who enjoy a comfortable life in the Devon countryside until the father Mr Nickleby (Andrew Havill) dies and leaves his family with no source of income (he had speculated his wealth on the stock market and lost heavily, prior to his death). Nineteen-year-old Nicholas (Charlie Hunnam), his mother Catherine (Stella Gonet), and his younger sister, Kate (Romola Garai), venture to London to seek help from their wealthy, cold-heart uncle Ralph (Christopher Plummer), a speculative investor who arranges for Nicholas to be hired as a tutor at Dotheboys Hall in Yorkshire and finds Kate work as a seamstress. Nicholas is horrified to discover his employers, the sadistic Mr Wackford Squeers (Jim Broadbent) and Mrs. Squeers (Juliet Stevenson), run their boarding school like a prison and physically, verbally, and emotionally abuse their young charges on a regular basis. Wackford won't allow the boys any correspondence with the outside world. He keeps all the money and gifts sent to the boys by their well-wishers and gives the gifts to his own son & daughter Fanny (Heather Goldenhersh). Meanwhile the young boys sleep in cattle shed, without a proper bed or blankets. They are fed brimstone for breakfast. Smike is a crippled servant of the school, who is treated worse than the others. Fanny takes a liking to Nicholas. But Nicholas rebuffs her advances. The Squeers take their frustration out on Smike, by increasing his workload to inhumane levels. Smike and Nicholas become friends and Nicholas really cares for Smike. Smike manages to run away by himself, but the Squeers launch a manhunt and bring him back. Wackford flogs Smike mercilessly as punishment. Nicholas eventually rebels (& flogs Wackford with his own cane) and escapes, taking with him the crippled young servant boy Smike (Jamie Bell). As they journey to London, they stumble upon a theatrical troupe owned and operated by Mr. Vincent Crummles (Nathan Lane) and Mrs Crummles (Barry Humphries). They cast them in a production of Romeo and Juliet. Mr. Folair (Alan Cumming) is a fellow actor at the troupe and warns Nicholas about the production quality of the troupe, which he considers abysmal. Despite a successful first night and the couple's invitation to stay, Nicholas is determined to continue their journey to London after hearing that Kate is in trouble. Meanwhile the Squeers have written to Ralph accusing Nicholas of attacking Wackford & stealing Mrs Squeers ring. They demand compensation of 28.10 pounds. Ralph feels cheated by Nicholas, as he has received news that Nicholas is on his way to Liverpool, perhaps to catch a ship and escape the country. This encourages Ralph to use Kate for furthering his own business purposes. Nicholas discovers his sister has been subjected to humiliating sexual harassment from the lecherous Sir Mulberry Hawk (Edward Fox), a client of their uncle, who has encouraged the man to seduce his niece (Ralph takes Kate to the theatre, where Hawk was already waiting. Hawk proceeds to grope at Kate at the end of the act, when everybody has left, despite her protests) in the hope that she will succumb and thus cement Hawk's business relationship with him. Newman Noggs (Tom Courtenay), Ralph Nickleby's butler is sympathetic to Kate and detests Ralph's treatment of Kate. He is the one who sends word to Nicholas. Nicholas confronts Sir Mulberry and his uncle, renouncing the latter. Lord Verisopht (Nicholas Rowe) is witness to Ralph's treatment of Nicholas and Kate and decides not to invest his money with Ralph. Nicholas is reunited with his family, who welcome Smike as one of their own, and finds clerical employment with the kindly Cheeryble brothers Charles (Timothy Spall) & Ned (Gerard Horan), who offer him more than double his previous salary (new salary of 120 pounds per year). While thus employed, Nicholas makes the acquaintance of Madeline Bray (Anne Hathaway), an artist who financially supports both herself and her tyrannical father Mr. Nigel Bray (David Bradley), after he gambled away his fortune and that of his late wife. Charles was in love with Madeline's mother, but she made the choice to go with Nigel. Charles feels obligated to take care of Madeline. Charles supports Madeline by buying her paintings via Nicholas. This way Madeline falls in love of Nicholas. Nicholas' determination to defend his sister's honor leads his uncle to vow he will destroy the young man. What ensues is a series of adventures in which the upstanding Nicholas manages to survive the schemes of his evil uncle, including an attempt to return Smike to Squeers by kidnapping him (Ralph calls Wackford and offers him 50 pounds, to lodge a police complaint against Nicholas for kidnapping Smike, who is under the legal guardianship of the Squeers. Nicholas works with John Browdie (Kevin McKidd), an employee of Wackford, but sympathetic to Nicholas and Smike to rescue Smike) and an effort to abort Nicholas' growing relationship with Madeline by promising her father he will excuse his debts if the girl weds Hawk. Ralph's designs on Madeline are thwarted when her father dies unexpectedly. Unfortunately, Smike falls ill and soon dies. Soon after, a sinister secret Ralph has harbored for years surfaces, and it is revealed Smike was Ralph's son, whom he had thought dead. Ralph had married in secret and his wife's father would have cut her out of his will, if he had known that she had married against his consent. The wife got pregnant and since the marriage was a secret, the boy had to be kept secret too. So, Ralph kept the boy hidden in the attic, where he got crippled. The doctors asked him to send away from London and Ralph gave the task to one of his servants. The servant took pity on the boy and reported to Ralph that he died, but he had sent the boy to the Squeer's school instead. At first the servant paid for him, but then couldn't afford the payments, due to which Smike became a servant at the school himself. Realizing that his son had died, the best friend of his most hated enemy Nicholas (and that he lost 10000 pounds in his investments), Ralph hangs himself. Kate marries the Cheeryble brothers' nephew Frank (William Ash), while Nicholas marries Madeline and settles with her in Devon at his father's house and grounds, where Smike is buried.

The film is set during the 19841985 UK miners' strike, and centres on the character of 11-year-old Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell), his love of dance and his hope to become a professional ballet dancer. Billy lives with his widowed father Jackie (Gary Lewis), older brother Tony (Jamie Draven), and his invalid Nan (Jean Heywood), who once aspired to be a professional dancer in Durham. Both Jackie and Tony are coal miners out on strike. Jackie takes Billy to the Sports Centre to learn boxing like his father's dad, but Billy struggles and dislikes the sport. He then happens upon a ballet class that is using the gym while their usual basement studio in the Sports Centre is temporarily being used as a soup kitchen for the striking miners. Unknown to Billy's father, he joins the ballet class. When Jackie discovers this after the boxing coach mentions Billy's absence, he forbids Billy to take any more ballet. But, passionate about dancing, Billy secretly continues his lessons with his dance teacher Georgia Wilkinson's (Julie Walters) help. Georgia believes Billy is talented enough to study at the Royal Ballet School in London, but due to Tony's arrest during a skirmish between police and striking miners, Billy misses the audition. Georgia goes to Billy's house to tell Jackie about the missed opportunity. Jackie and Tony, fearing that Billy will be considered a "poof", are outraged at the prospect of him becoming a professional ballet dancer. Over Christmas, Billy's best friend, Michael, kisses him on the cheek. Although Billy is not gay, he is supportive of his friend. Later, Jackie sees Billy dancing in the gym and realises his son is truly gifted, and he will do whatever it takes to help Billy realise his dream. Jackie attempts to cross the picket line to pay for Billy's training, but is blocked by Tony. Instead, his fellow miners and the neighbourhood raise money for Billy, and Jackie takes him to London to audition for the Royal Ballet School. Though highly nervous, Billy performs well, but after he punches another boy in an unprovoked attack at the audition, he is sternly rebuked by the review board. However, as a final question, they ask him what it feels like when he's dancing, to which Billy responds, "like electricity." Billy returns home with his father. Sometime later, he receives a letter accepting him to the Royal Ballet School, and he leaves his family to go there. The film's final scene is set fourteen years later (approximately 1999), when Billy has finally attained his goal: the mature Billy (dancer/actor Adam Cooper) takes the stage to perform the lead in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake, as Jackie, Tony, and Michael watch in the audience.
