Prince Adam discovers that the strange memories shaping his life are real when the lost Sword of Power resurfaces, forcing him to return to Eternia and challenge the tyrant who shattered his family and kingdom. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor. To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela and Duncan/Man-At-Arms, and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe. Prince Adam, having been sent to Earth as a child to protect him from the evil Skeletor, searches for the missing sword of power, needed to return to Eternia and reclaim his world. With his heroes of Eternia, Adam must battle Skeletor's horde of villains to prevent him from gaining the ultimate power and ensure he is unstoppable. Prince Adam has spent fifteen years on Earth searching for the magical weapon that vanished during Eternia's fall to Skeletor, refusing to abandon the world everyone else believes exists only in his imagination. After the Sword finally reveals itself, Adam reunites with Teela and returns to a homeland reduced to ruins under enemy rule. Resistance fighters, old allies, and forgotten legends gather as he struggles to earn their trust while learning what the Power truly demands of its champion. Every march toward Castle Grayskull forces Adam to balance compassion with strength as the fate of Eternia hangs over every choice. Fifteen years after fleeing the planet Eternia to seek refuge on Earth, Prince Adam still feels like a fish out of water. But his noble roots are calling. While scouring the internet for his lost Sword of Power, Adam accidentally alerts Skeletor—the skull-faced tyrant who has since taken over his home world. Reunited with his fierce childhood friend, Teela, Adam embarks on a high-stakes quest beyond the stars to free his captive parents and reclaim the realm. Before he can face dark magic and deadly armies, Adam must unlock his dormant inner strength, unite a broken team of legendary warriors, and finally embrace his destiny as a leader. Now, the people's champion is on the verge of making history. Who can stand in the way of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe? [NARRATION_OPEN: Prince Adam / He-Man (Nicholas Galitzine)] "Where do I start? Well, I guess what I really want to say is, everything I am is because of where I come from. Eternia, a world of endless beauty. All that stuff that only exists in legends and bedtime stories. On Eternia, that stuff is real. Griffins, dragons, talking tigers, enchanted forests, burning deserts, islands in the sky. You name it. I swear I'm not high. And then we've got Castle Grayskull. My father once told me that Eternia is the beating heart of the cosmos. And Grayskull is the heart of that heart. So I guess the heart of the heart of the heart is the Power of Grayskull. They say it can make a man as mighty as a god. To keep it safe, the Power was bound within a vessel. An ancient sword they called the Sword of Power. Yeah, I know, but that's what they went with. Legend said that when Eternia was in its greatest need, a hero would step forth and wield the Sword, and, you know, use it awesomely. Until that day, it was locked away within the castle under the watchful eye of the Sorceress, who was wise, and ancient, and a little scary, to be honest. But she's cool. She's cool. For hundreds of years, Grayskull has remained under the protection of my ancestors. See, I come from a pretty impressive lineage of mighty heroes. Noble, strong, fearless." [NARRATION_CLOSE: Prince Adam / He-Man (Nicholas Galitzine)] On the majestic planet Eternia, the sprawling capital city of Eternos surrounds Castle Grayskull, a fortress guarded by the Sorceress (Morena Baccarin) and housing the Sword of Power within. Young Prince Adam (Artie Wilkinson-Hunt) resists his mandatory combat training, preferring to stay home with his talking tiger cub, Cringer (Fletcher Glenn, voice). His mother, Queen Marlena (Charlotte Riley), sends him regardless, and at the training ground Duncan (Idris Elba), the King's Man-At-Arms and commander of the Royal Guard, presides over the session. King Randor (James Purefoy) arrives and observes his son goofing around with his best friend Teela (Eire Farrell), who is also Duncan's daughter. Randor steps onto the training ground and singles Adam out in front of the entire class, challenging him to a bout and then knocking him to the dirt, telling him: "This world is no place for the weak." Duncan quietly urges Adam to get back up and look strong when the King turns around. Adam walks off alone. Teela finds him, and the two children notice the Sorceress gazing skyward as a massive fleet of ships descends and begins bombarding Eternos. Adam and Teela race back toward the palace as a battle engulfs the city, the Eternian military engaging thousands of enemy soldiers and monstrous creatures. Duncan moves the royal family, Teela included, through the battlefield. Their passage is blocked by Trap Jaw (Sam C. Wilson), a partially mechanized lieutenant, and Duncan orders the family to keep moving while he fights. Duncan initially gains the upper hand, but Trap Jaw's mechanical augmentations allow him to recover and incapacitate Duncan, who drops a bomb behind him as he pursues the royals. Teela runs back, wakes her unconscious father, and both leap from a window as the bomb detonates. On the bridge leading to Castle Grayskull, King Randor, Queen Marlena, and Adam are surrounded. Their encirclement parts to reveal Skeletor (Jared Leto), a skull-faced dark wizard who announces he has lurked in the deepest and darkest corners of the universe, building his forces while waiting for his moment. Randor tells Adam to be strong, then turns to hold the enemy soldiers back, allowing his wife and son to run. He is overwhelmed. Skeletor takes the crown from Randor's head, has him taken away, and turns toward his true objective: the Sword of Power. Inside Castle Grayskull, the Sorceress presses the Sword into Adam's hands and opens a portal, telling him to take the blade somewhere safe, far from Skeletor. Skeletor breaks into the keep and blasts Marlena. The Sorceress holds him and his forces back while calling out to Adam that the Sword is his only way home when the time comes. Adam leaps through the portal, but the maelstrom of energy tears the Sword from his hands before depositing him on Earth, his mother's home planet. Fifteen years later in Oklahoma City, an adult Adam Glenn (Nicholas Galitzine) finishes telling this story to a woman named Julie (Elena Rivers) on a date; she departs without explanation. Adam returns to his apartment and his housemate Hussein (Christian Vunipola), who advises him to stop telling people a story that everyone in his life has attributed to psychosis brought on by the traumatic death of his parents. Adam insists it is all real. He has spent the intervening years obsessively searching for the Sword and filling notebooks and walls with drawings and maps of Eternia to preserve the memory of his home. The next day, Adam goes to work at a human resources firm, where he spends time on the clock posting personal ads searching for the Sword. At a gym, a large older man known only as Macho Man (Dolph Lundgren) advises him to "get behind yourself, not in front," and wishes him a good journey. Later, his supervisor Suzie (Sasheer Zamata) calls him in and informs him that his work has suffered as a result of his obsession, and he will be terminated if he does not stop. At that moment Adam's phone vibrates with a response to one of his ads, stating his sword has been located. Adam rushes downtown to a comic book store, where the anonymous contact leads him to the Sword, currently affixed to a display statue. Adam struggles to pull it free as baffled staff and customers watch, eventually wrenching it loose. He holds it aloft and recites the incantation he remembers: "By the Power of Grayskull, I have to go home." Nothing happens, and Adam flees the store with the Sword. Back at the apartment, he begs the Sword to do something. It does not. The next morning, police officers Black (Max Kraus) and Blumenthal (Kelly Coughlin) arrive to arrest him for theft. The officers drive Adam away in their cruiser and are stopped on a highway by traffic. When they step out to investigate, the other motorists flee. Adam watches from the back seat as Beast Man (Gary Martin), a massive ape-like creature, rampages toward the vehicle. Beast Man attacks Adam, pursuing him as he tries to run with the Sword. Before Beast Man can finish him, he is shot down by a young warrior: Teela (Camila Mendes). They reunite. Teela reveals that both she and Beast Man followed a signal emitted by the Sword when Adam raised it, and asks why he waited fifteen years to do so. Adam admits he lost the Sword the night he arrived on Earth. Beast Man recovers and charges again; Teela fights him as they retreat to her ship in the middle of the city. They take off before he can reach them and travel through a portal back to Eternia. During the journey, Teela tells Adam that she and all of Eternia believed him dead. Adam asks about his parents. She confirms that Skeletor took them on the night of the invasion, and they have not been seen since. When they arrive at Eternos, they find it reduced to ash and ruin. One of Skeletor's spies, Tri-Klops (Kojo Attah), spots them from the wreckage. At Snake Mountain, Skeletor's fortress, his chief lieutenant Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie) reports to Skeletor that Beast Man has returned from Earth without the Sword, which Teela has taken. Skeletor acknowledges that even with his Staff of Havoc, his vast army, and all the power he commands, none of it is secure so long as the Sword remains out of his grasp. He means to be a god, not merely a king, and the Sword is the instrument of that ambition. Teela takes Adam to a subterranean base where the surviving Eternians operate a resistance led by what remains of the Royal Guard. She introduces Adam as the Prince of Eternia, but the assembled warriors reject the claim based on his bearing and speech. Adam recognizes each of them from his childhood drawings: Fisto (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson), identified by his enormous mechanical fist; Ram Man (Jon Xue Zhang), armed with a ramming helmet; and Mekaneck (James Wilkinson), whose neck extends mechanically. He also recognizes Dian (Christiaan Bettridge), a guards-woman who used to bully him as a child, and Moss Man (Stephen Adentan). The warriors confiscate the Sword to examine it, and send both Adam and Teela to a holding cell while they deliberate. In the cell, Adam and Teela find an unconscious drunk and a large robot performing menial cleaning duties. Adam identifies the robot as a Class-4 Battlebot, the deadliest model ever engineered. The robot, designated Roboto (Kristen Wiig, voice), confirms the classification and corrects Adam's estimate of her battlefield value upward. Outside, the Royal Guard confirms the Sword is genuine, but before any further discussion is possible, Skeletor's forces storm the base. Through the cell door, Adam invites Roboto to join them and fight as the warrior she was built to be. She accepts and breaks the door. Teela insists they bring the unconscious man as well, who is in fact a long-sober Duncan, now deeply diminished by drink. They wake him; he is too intoxicated to walk. Roboto, who was reprogrammed into a domestic servant by Duncan after a near-fatal incident with her combat systems, carries him out as the four make their way through the chaos of the attack. They find Ram Man in the confusion; he returns the Sword and tells them to keep it away from Skeletor, who has arrived. They make it to the hangar, where Trap Jaw and a squad of enemy soldiers are waiting. Adam steps forward and attempts to talk Trap Jaw down, employing conflict resolution techniques. Trap Jaw attacks him. Adam is beaten to the floor. Teela and Duncan tell him to use the Sword. Adam sees a vision of the Sorceress reminding him of the incantation. With no other option, Adam raises the Sword and calls upon the Power of Grayskull. A wave of energy erupts and transforms him into the muscle-bound Champion of Grayskull. He faces Trap Jaw directly, withstands his cannon arm's fire, rips the cannon free, and turns it on the remaining soldiers. He, Teela, Duncan, and Roboto board Teela's ship. They narrowly evade Skeletor himself and lift off, but Skeletor's forces pursue. Adam dispatches enemy craft in the air while Teela evades, but the ship sustains too much damage and crash-lands in deep forest, separating the group. Meanwhile, Skeletor's forces round up the last of the free Eternians. Skeletor threatens to execute them one by one until someone identifies the Champion wielding the Sword. When they refuse, he executes Moss Man, then prepares to move to the next captive. Fisto steps forward and identifies the Champion as the long-lost Prince of Eternia. Skeletor orders all captives imprisoned while he considers how to draw Adam out. Teela, Duncan, and Roboto emerge from the wreck. Teela goes to find Adam and orders Duncan to remain behind, having taken up his duties as Man-At-Arms and no longer trusting him. Duncan searches through Teela's effects aboard the ship and finds his old gear. Adam wakes on the forest floor and sees a falcon perched on the Sword. The Sorceress (Morena Baccarin), speaking through the falcon, tells him he is destined to save Eternia. The falcon departs as Teela arrives and leads Adam back to the camp. She finds Duncan shaved and dressed in his old armor, holding a flask. She objects to any further drinking. Adam sits with Duncan, conflicted about the violence he inflicted on Trap Jaw and the soldiers. Duncan tells him that fighting when others cannot protect themselves is not mere violence; it is protection, and it is fought for the future of his people. Later, as Adam and Teela gather supplies, she confesses she has thought about him every day since he left. When Adam says the same, she walks back the implication, calling him a very good friend. That night, Skeletor's image appears in the sky. He reveals that King Randor and Queen Marlena have been kept alive and offers to trade them for the Sword. He instructs Adam to come to Snake Mountain and ends the transmission. Adam resolves immediately to go, not to surrender the Sword but to kill Skeletor and free his parents. Teela argues strongly against walking into Skeletor's fortress, but Adam says that now that he carries the Power, he must use it. He will go with or without them. All three, along with Roboto, choose to accompany him. They trek to the volcanic wastes and arrive at Snake Mountain's gate. Adam announces himself and demands Skeletor. His companions are separated and taken to the dungeon while he is escorted to the throne room by Goat Man (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson), Skeletor's brutish enforcer. In the throne room at the mountain's peak, Adam finds Skeletor on the balcony, and draws the Sword. Skeletor demonstrates his leverage: King Randor, positioned perilously close to the edge. Adam demands his father's release. Skeletor instead summons his personal guard, comprising Goat Man, Tri-Klops, Spikor (James Apps), Karg (Hung Dante Dong), and a full contingent of soldiers, with orders to take the Sword. The Champion of Grayskull fights the entire group, incapacitating most of them and killing the rest. He charges Skeletor. Evil-Lyn intervenes and freezes Adam in place with dark magic. Skeletor prepares to kill Randor with Adam's own Sword. Adam fights through the magical paralysis and fires a bolt of energy at Skeletor. Skeletor evades, but the blast collapses part of the ceiling onto Randor. Adam reaches his father. They reconcile. Adam says he has finally become the strong man Randor always wanted him to be. Randor tells him he never wanted him to change; he only saw how hard the world would be for his son and tried, in the only way he knew, to protect him. He apologizes for never saying so, and dies in Adam's arms. Skeletor takes the Sword and knocks the devastated Adam unconscious with his staff. Adam is thrown into the dungeon with the other Eternians. He is reunited with his mother, Queen Marlena. Both grieve the King. Above them, Skeletor raises the Sword and speaks the incantation, but the Power does not respond. Evil-Lyn informs him that if the Sword is returned to its altar at Castle Grayskull, Skeletor can claim the connection for himself through a ritual she can perform there. He leaves for Grayskull at once. In the dungeon, Duncan finds Adam and tells him that he knows what it is to fail, to be unable to face his daughter every day with the weight of his own inadequacy, and to turn to drink rather than feel it. Adam reminds Duncan of the words Duncan once told him as a boy: when you fall, it is your chance to get back up and stand tall. Each bolstered by the other, they both rise. Teela enters with an old companion, Cringer (Tom Wilton, voice), now fully grown into a massive green tiger. Seeing the surviving heroes assembled around him, Adam hatches a plan. Duncan calls everyone together and Adam stands before them. He confirms that he is Prince of Eternia, that he was cast out to Earth but never stopped trying to return and never forgot the Eternians who fought on in his absence. He rallies them to take back their home, citing each hero by the childhood names he gave them. Ram Man notes that the cell bars are unbreakable, but Adam observes the surrounding stone is not. He asks Duncan to reverse Roboto's reprogramming so she can operate in battle mode once more. Skeletor arrives at the mouth of Castle Grayskull and orders his men to kill anyone who approaches, then goes inside with Evil-Lyn and Beast Man. At Snake Mountain, Duncan restores Roboto's battle systems. Roboto blasts at the stone anchoring the bars while all of the Eternians press against them together. The wall gives, and the imprisoned heroes overpower their guards and take the remaining ships to rush back to Eternos. The Royal Guard engages Skeletor's forces across the city while Adam, Teela, Duncan, Roboto, and Cringer are dropped on the bridge to Castle Grayskull. Duncan tells Teela to go with Adam and Cringer to stop Skeletor while he and Roboto hold off the reinforcements. He and Teela reconcile. Adam encourages a reluctant Cringer to become the Battle Cat he was born to be. Cringer yields, and they ride toward the castle while Duncan and Roboto stand against the incoming army together. Inside, Skeletor replaces the Sword on the altar. Before he can enact the ritual, Adam, Teela, and Cringer storm through the guards and enter the sanctuary. Adam dismounts and takes back the Sword. Cringer faces Beast Man, Teela takes on Evil-Lyn, and Adam confronts Skeletor. Outside, Duncan and Roboto find themselves severely outnumbered. Duncan uses Roboto's last rocket to collapse a section of the bridge, cutting off the bulk of the army. Trap Jaw then arrives in a gunship, repaired, and opens fire, destroying Roboto. Duncan seizes the gunship and attacks Trap Jaw directly, breaking his mechanical jaw open. He lodges a grenade inside and leaps clear as Trap Jaw's gunship explodes. In the keep, Adam dodges Skeletor's attacks while Teela and Cringer hold their opponents. Skeletor fires a killing bolt from his Staff of Havoc. Adam blocks it with the Sword, but the force is too great and the Sword shatters. Skeletor grabs hold of Adam and draws him into a nightmarescape built from Adam's own memories of exile on Earth: a life of embarrassment, estrangement, and futility, a boy too weak to stand up for himself, too strange to belong, living a worthless existence on an alien world while his home burned. Skeletor pronounces Eternia nothing but a dream Adam could never live up to, and impales Adam with the broken Sword. As Adam lies dying, the Sorceress pulls him into another dreamscape. She tells him to get back up. Adam says he cannot; the Sword is destroyed and the Power is gone. The Sorceress directs him to the champion's incantation: "By the Power of Grayskull, I have the Power." She tells him the Sword is only a conduit. It is Adam himself who was chosen as the vessel of the Power. In past champions, the Power manifested as brute strength. In Adam, she saw compassion, empathy, and a drive to protect the innocent alongside the strength, and knew he was worthy. She heals his wound. Adam wakes inside Grayskull, shocking both Skeletor and Teela. He pulls the broken Sword from his chest as the wound closes. The Sword reassembles itself in his hand. He speaks the incantation and transforms. The lightning that erupts from the transformation is visible across the battlefield, and the sight of it rallies the Eternians fighting in the city. Adam does not attack immediately. He offers Skeletor the opportunity to end the conflict and choose another path. Skeletor rejects the offer, declaring himself a villain who likes what he is just fine, and attacks. They duel in the heart of the castle. Skeletor pins the Champion and taunts him for holding back, for being too frightened to use the Power fully. Adam tells him he has been holding back, then goes on the offensive with full force, driving Skeletor to the floor with bare-handed strikes. He tells Skeletor his chance is gone, crushes the Staff of Havoc, and the resulting destruction disintegrates Skeletor, leaving behind only an empty skull. Evil-Lyn and Beast Man slip away during the battle. Outside, Duncan finds Roboto's head barely still functioning and sits with it. The others join him as the Eternians celebrate the reclamation of Eternos. Six months later, the city is rebuilt and Queen Marlena has been returned to the throne as the ruling monarch of Eternia. Citizens celebrate in the streets. On the bridge of Castle Grayskull, the heroes of Eternia gather to meet a newly rebuilt Roboto and Adam's former housemate Hussein, who is delighted to see for himself that everything Adam told him was true. Teela asks Adam how it feels to see the heroes from his childhood drawings standing in the flesh before him, then asks whether he ever came up with a name for her. He admits he did: "Warrior Goddess." She asks if he came up with one for himself, and he reluctantly reveals it: "He-Man." Roboto receives a distress call from a distant Avion village. Teela tells Adam it sounds like a job for He-Man. Adam runs off with Cringer to transform, and the gathered heroes watch He-Man and Battle Cat ride out. Queen Marlena tells Duncan that she had given up hope of seeing either of her children again. Duncan says that perhaps her daughter will return to her someday. During the credits, Orko (Christopher Ragland) appears to deliver a brief moral address to the audience, observing that muscles do not necessarily make a man, and that having a skull for a face is a fairly reliable indicator of villainy. After the credits, Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie) returns to Castle Grayskull and retrieves Skeletor's skull. As she departs, Skeletor's laughter is heard emanating from it. In a separate mid-credits scene, somewhere far from Eternia, a man calls out to Force Captain Adora (Lauren Saliu). She corrects him: that is not who she is anymore. She raises a large Sword aloft, and the Power transforms her into a super-powered hero.

In 1987, wealthy New York investment banker Patrick Bateman's (Christian Bale) life revolves around dining at trendy restaurants while keeping up appearances for his fiance Evelyn (Reese Witherspoon) and for his circle of wealthy and shallow associates, most of whom he dislikes. Bateman describes the material accouterments of his lifestyle, including his daily morning exercise and beautification routine. He also discusses his music collection, with performers such as Huey Lewis and the News, Phil Collins, and Whitney Houston. His focus on a lavish lifestyle is also evident by his taste in expensive designer clothing and his luxurious apartment. Bateman is having an affair with Evelyn' friend Courtney (Samantha Mathis), while Evelyn is having an affair with Bateman's coworker Timothy (Justin Theroux). Courtney is engaged to Bateman's other colleague Luis Carruthers (who is slightly gay). Bateman and his associates flaunt their business cards in a display of vanity. Enraged by the superiority of co-worker Paul Allen's (Jared Leto) card, Bateman murders a homeless man and kills the man's dog. At a Christmas party, Bateman makes plans to have dinner with Paul, with Paul mistaking Bateman for another coworker, Marcus Halberstram (Anthony Lemke). Bateman gets Paul drunk and lures him back to his apartment. While playing "Hip to Be Square" on the stereo, explaining to Paul his opinion and interpretation of the song, Bateman murders Paul with an ax, donning a raincoat moments before, to keep blood off of his clothes. He disposes of Paul's body, then goes to Paul's apartment to stage the situation so that others believe Paul has run off to London. Bateman is later interviewed about Paul's disappearance in his office by private detective Donald Kimball (Willem Dafoe), hired by Paul's family. During the night, Bateman takes two prostitutes, whom he names Christie (Cara Seymour) and Sabrina (Krista Sutton), to his apartment and explains to them the improvement he saw in the band Genesis after they moved away from progressive rock toward a more pop rock sound beginning with the album Duke. After they have sex, Bateman tells them to stay, while taking out instruments he uses for torture. In the next scene, the prostitutes leave his apartment bruised and bloodied. In the entire sequence, Bateman makes sure that he introduces himself as Paul Allen. The next day, Bateman's colleague Luis Carruthers (Matt Ross) reveals his new business card. Bateman tries to kill Luis in the restroom of an expensive restaurant but cannot bring himself to strangle him. Luis mistakes the attempted murder for a sexual advance and declares his love for Bateman, who flees in disgust. After murdering a model, Bateman invites his secretary, Jean (Chloë Sevigny), to dinner, suggesting she meet him at his apartment for drinks beforehand. When Jean arrives, Bateman, unbeknownst to her, holds a nail gun to the back of her head while the two converse. When he receives an answering machine message from his fiance, he asks Jean to leave. Kimball meets Bateman for lunch and tells him he is not under suspicion. Bateman has a threesome with his friend Elizabeth (Guinevere Turner) and Christie at Paul's apartment. Bateman kills Elizabeth during sex, and Christie runs, discovering multiple female corpses as she searches for an exit. She is chased by a naked Bateman wielding a chainsaw, and as she is running down the stairs of Paul's apartment building, is killed by the chainsaw which Bateman drops from several levels above her. Bateman breaks off his engagement with Evelyn. That night, as he uses an ATM, he finds a stray kitten; the ATM displays the text "feed me a stray cat". As he prepares to shoot the cat, a woman sees him and tries to stop him; he shoots her and lets the cat go free. A police chase ensues, but Bateman destroys the police cars by shooting their gas tanks. Fleeing to his office, Bateman enters the wrong office building, where he murders a security guard and a janitor. In an office he believes to be his, Bateman calls his lawyer Harold (Stephen Bogaert) and frantically leaves a lengthy confession on Harold's answering machine. The following morning, Bateman visits Paul's apartment, expecting it to be full of decomposing bodies and in the middle of a police investigation, but it is vacant and for sale. The real estate broker tells him to leave. As Bateman goes to meet with his colleagues and lawyer for lunch, a horrified Jean finds detailed drawings of murder, mutilation, and sexual assault in Bateman's office journal. Bateman sees Harold at a restaurant and tries to convince him that he is a serial killer relating to the phone message he left the other night. Harold mistakes Bateman for another colleague and laughs off the phone message confession as a joke, saying he had dinner with Paul in London days earlier. A confused Bateman returns to his friends and in a final voice-over narration, he realizes he will continue to escape the punishment he deserves, that there has been no catharsis: "This confession has meant nothing".

Susanna Kaysen is a young woman of eighteen, and her life isn't exactly what a normal eighteen-year-old's life is suppose to be like. To her, any kind of sex is casual, and it doesn't matter who she does it with or when, as long as she gets it. At graduation, she falls asleep, proving she has little interest for the norms of prize-givings or anything to do with what's accepted by society. At her father's birthday party, she is under dressed and is of course moaned at by her hypocritical mother. Here we learn that her parent's friends are just as false as what is accepted by everyone. And then it becomes clear that Susanna has been sleeping with her mother's friend's husband. This drives her to try to commit suicide with aspirin and a bottle of vodka to get it all down. At the ER, she claims that she doesn't have bones in her wrists anymore, and tells the psychiatrist at home that the bones grew back by the time she got to the hospital. So she is shipped off to Claymoore, a local mental institution and put in the ward for women only. Here she meets a multitude of people who really do have problems: a sardonic anorexic, a girl who burned herself as a child, a lesbian (at the time was thought of as a mental disorder), a bulimic, and her roommate, a compulsive liar. The ward is managed by Nurse Valerie Owens, who is very clever, but is unable to become a doctor due to her race. All the nursing staff and the patients are kept marginally sane by Valerie, and she and Susanna have a complex relationship. Susanna is questionably diagnosed with having borderline personality disorder. Things really get started when the sociopath runaway patient, Lisa Rowe, returns to the ward and turns Susanna's world upside down and inside out. She is a force to be reckoned with - she is magnetic, rebellious, doesn't take her meds and is unhealthy for the other patients as she breaks down their self-esteem regularly. Due to the fact that her last best friend, Jamie, couldn't hack this when she ran away, Lisa befriends Susanna and together they start a world of trouble. Susanna keeps a diary of all her thoughts and feelings, also illustrating in it, and telling the tale of her stay through her daily entries. Her ex-boyfriend, Tobias Jacobs, comes to visit her and she very nearly tries to have sex with him in her room. He tells her he wants them to run away to Canada together so that he doesn't have to go to Vietnam. He tells her she isn't crazy and that the girls in the institution aren't really her friends. But she refuses to go with him, subconsciously beginning to rely on Lisa. Then she meets the head psychiatrist, Dr. Sonia Wick, and claims she is ambivalent, saying it means she doesn't care. But Dr. Wick sees through this mask and decides to have Susanna see her from now on. Afterwards, Lisa is taken into see the doctor, but doesn't return and Susanna falls into a depression. Nurse Valerie has had enough and throws her into an ice cold bath to wake her. She tells Susanna, after Susanna attacks her verbally and says that she doesn't know what she is doing, that she is a spoiled, lazy little girl who is driving herself crazy! And that if Susanna isn't careful, she will throw her life away on some stupid rebellion. That night, Lisa breaks into the ward, wild-eyed and crazy, and Susanna runs away with her so they can get to Disneyland. There they hook up with hippies and eventually crash at the bulimic Daisy's house after bribing her with promises of meds. But all turns bad when Lisa tells Daisy that she is a freak herself and that this apartment is all a mask to hide what's really happening. She breaks Daisy down, finally saying that Daisy probably likes her father molesting her and that it's probably all she has ever known. The next morning, Susanna wakes up and goes for a walk, to escape the sound of Lisa's voice and returns to find Daisy playing a record over and over again and Lisa in the kitchen. She goes up the stairs and finds Daisy's wrists slit and she hangs herself in the bathroom. Susanna goes back to the institution without Lisa, (who runs away again) and begins anew with Dr. Wick and her diary. When Susanna is ready to leave, Lisa breaks out of her padded cell and steals Susanna's diary. Beneath the ward in the maze of corridors, Lisa reads the diary aloud and tells the other girls what Susanna thinks of them. Susanna runs away from Lisa when she begins to chase her with a needle filled with a toxic-looking chemical. Susanna breaks her hand while trying to close a sliding metal door on Lisa and then they finally confront each other. Susanna finally tells Lisa that no one cares if she dies because she is already dead and her heart is cold. She also tells Lisa that she will begin her life again out of this hospital without Lisa and the others. Lisa has a mental breakdown and attempts to commit suicide but the other girls dissuade her from doing so. In the morning, Susanna is about to leave, but first she goes to visit Lisa and talks to her again. Now restrained to a bed, Lisa says that she isn't really cold and that she didn't mean to hurt Susanna. When she leaves, she says goodbye to all her friends, and gets into the taxicab saying that being crazy isn't about keeping a secret, it's just about everyone being personified. And by the seventies, most of her friends were out of the institution and leading lives. The girl who was just interrupted by herself and everyone else, is finally recovered from being a supposed borderline.

On a dark and rainy night, a young woman, named Michelle Mancini (Natasha Gregson Wagner), is driving her pickup truck, listening to a college campus radio DJ. After nearly colliding with another car, she realizes that she is almost out of gas and pulls into the nearest gas station, a creepy looking, run-down place in the middle of nowhere. The strange-looking attendant offers to fill up her car, and Michelle offers to pay by credit card. After a minute, the attendant convinces Michelle that her credit card is not working and wants her to come into his office to speak to the credit card company on the phone. However, when Michelle gets inside the station and picks up the phone, there is no one on the other line. The attendant approaches her and excitedly stutters, but he cannot say anything clearly. The fearful woman sprays mace in his face and manages to run back to her truck and speeds away while the attendant remains behind and yells after her that he's only trying to help her and screaming, "SOMEONE'S IN THE BACK SEAT!" On the road, Michelle relaxes a little bit until someone sits up in the back seat and swings an axe at her. That same night, inside a coffee shop lounge at Pendleton University, college student Parker Riley (Michael Rosenbaum) is telling an urban legend called the 'Stanley Hall Massacre' about 25 years ago when a crazy professor killed a dozen students at a closed down dorm on campus. Two of the students, Natalie Simon (Alicia Witt) and Brenda Bates (Rebecca Gayheart), listen with skepticism while they listen to Parker's girlfriend, Sasha Thomas (Tara Reid), who operates a local radio call-in show, finish her broadcast. Paul Gardener (Jared Leto), a pompous college reporter, joins the group and sneers at Parker's yarn. Brenda is obviously attracted to Paul. Natalie and Brenda walk towards the closed down Stanley Hall dorm building, where they suggest they chant Bloody Mary as a gag, when they are surprised by Damon Brooks (Joshua Jackson), a misfit student who taunts them over going inside the boarded up building. Natalie and Brenda split up where Natalie goes home to her dorm room where she interrupts her Goth girl roommate, Tosh Guaneri (Danielle Harris), having sex with a Goth guy. The next day in class, Professor William Wexler (Robert Englund) is discussing folklore and urban legends. Damon, the class goof-off, walks up to the front of the class and tries drinking soda and pop rocks candy to prove the urban legend that his stomach will not explode. He then feigns going into a seizure and playing dead much to the annoyance of Wexler and the amusement of his friends. Later that day, Natalie and Brenda see Paul distributing out newspapers detailing about the decapitation murder the previous night in which the stuffy Dean Adams (John Neviulle) and the campus security guard, Reese Wilson (Loretta Devine), seizes copies of the school paper about the recent murder. Paul protests to the dean about a possible murder on the campus. But Adams tells Paul that there is no killer and the only crazy person is him. Later that day, Natalie, Brenda, Paul, Parker, Sasha, and Damon meet where they discuss the murder. Natalie claims not to know the murder victim, but she has in her procession a high school yearbook which shows that Natalie and Michelle were captains of their cheerleading squad. That evening, Damon arrives at Natalie's dorm room to console her and takes her someplace in his car to talk. After driving to a secluded part in the nearby woods, Natalie is angry to discover that Damon only wants to talk to her to persuade her for some need of loving. After Natalie becomes angry and demands that Damon take her home, he exits the car to the call of nature when someone attacks him with a rope. When Natalie goes to check on him, the killer, wearing a heavy hooded winter overcoat, attacks her. As she tries to drive away, Damon, tied to a rope attached to the bumper of the car is hoisted up and choked to death. His body lands on top of the car, forcing Natalie to get out and run. Natalie goes to the campus security office and tells Reese about the killing, but when the both arrive at the scene, the body and Damon's car are gone. The next day, after failing to locate Damon, Natalie's friends are skeptic to her claims of a murder and think that Damons disappearance is one of his practical jokes. Natalie goes to the library to research urban legends by reading a book titled 'The Encyclopedia of Urban Legends'. While Natalie is in the library, Tosh meets a fellow Goth guy online and they plan to meet. When she returns from the bathroom to get ready for her date, the killer is waiting for her in the room and attacks. Natalie walks into the room and assumes the noises are of Tosh having sex again. The killer pulls out the electrical plugs for the lights in the room, and Natalie goes to bed, not realizing that Tosh is being strangled to death. The next morning, Natalie wakes up and sees her roommate dead from slashed wrists and a message left by the killer written on a wall in blood saying: "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the lights?" Everyone thinks that Tosh committed suicide and the message on the wall was "a very morbid suicide note". Natalie convinces Paul that Tosh's death was not a suicide and they look for evidence about the Stanley Hall Massacre, but they find no evidence and all the old newspaper clippings in the library from 1972 where the killings took place are gone. Natalie and Paul run into the creepy-looking janitor where they ask him questions about the Stanley Hall Massacre and the janitor tells them to talk to Wexler. Natalie and Paul sneak into Wexler's office for evidence and are caught by the professor. Brought before Dean Adams, Paul asks about the Stanley Hall Massacre, but the dean avoids the question by telling Paul that he's fired from the school newspaper and tells both of them to stop investigating something that never happened. Adams further tells Natalie that she has a criminal records for "reckless endangerment" and served a year of probation and that she too is to stop investigating the urban legend about the Stanley Hall Massacre if she wants to stay at the college. Outside, Paul becomes angry when Natalie continues to avoid his questions about her past or if she knew Michelle. Later, Natalie walks into the campus swimming pool where Brenda is doing laps when she thinks she sees the killer approach. But the figure in the winter coat is only a fellow colleague. In the locker room, Natalie confides in Brenda that she did know Michelle. She tells the story of how she and Michelle were out driving one night on a dark road without their cars headlights on when a passing car flashed them and, with Michelle driving, the chased down the car in which the car went off the road and the driver was killed. That evening, Dead Adams is in the parking garage to drive home when the killer ambushes him and kills him by slashing his ankles and driving over him with his own car. At a fraternity party where Parker is throwing, Paul arrives with an old newspaper article given to him by the janitor which tells that Wexler was the sole survivor of the 1972 Stanley Hall Massacre and that he may be responsible for the killings. When Natalie admits to having feelings for Paul, they kiss. Brenda sees this and in a jealous rage, leaves the party. A little later, during the party, Parker gets a phone call and is told about what happened to his pet dog (it was cooked in a kitchen microwave over as another urban legends). He runs into a nearby bathroom to throw up when the killer attacks him and kills him by pouring pop rocks and liquid draino drown his throat. While Natalie is trying to reach Paul who ran off, Sasha is attacked at the radio station by the killer who chases her through the building with an axe. Natalie hears Sasha screaming over the radio and runs over to the station but is too late as the killer catches up to Sasha and axes her to death. Meanwhile, Reese searches Wexler's office but finds the floor covered with blood. She calls the police, but because of a serious thunderstorm, the roads are washed out. Reese goes off to find the killer on her own. Natalie runs into Paul outside her doom room and becomes suspicious to where he went during the time Sasha was killed. They both find Brenda, in which they become suspicious about her. They drive away from the campus to look for help when they stop at another gas station. While Paul goes to a phone to call the police, Brenda and Natalie notice a strange odor and upon opening the car truck, discover the dead and mangled body of Professor Wexler. They both run away and into the nearby woods where they both split up. On a back road, Natalie is picked up by the eerie janitor (Julian Richings). But the killer chases them in another car and the janitors truck runs off the road in which the janitor hits his head and is killed. Natalie returns to the campus and tries calling for help on a police phone, but she hears screams from inside the abandoned Stanley Hall building where there is a light on the third floor. Natalie breaks in to look around and finds the dead bodies of Parker, Adams, and Damon. She finds Brenda lying motionless on a bed in a room lit with hundreds of different candles. But before she can react, Natalie is knocked out. Waking up later, Natalie finds herself tied to the bed with the killer standing over here in which the hood comes off to reveal..... Brenda. No longer acting like the casualty nice and friendly girl as seen thorough the movie, the sneering and wild-eyed Brenda explains to Natalie that the boy who was killed in the accident by Michelle and Natalie years before was Brenda's boyfriend. Brenda befriended Natalie this whole time to torment her with this urban legends as her insane way of getting even with her. Just as Brenda is about to kill Natalie by removing her kidneys as the "kidney heist" urban legends, Reese appears to come to Natalie's rescue, but Brenda attacks Reese with a knife and wrestles her gun away. Just then, Paul appears applauding Brenda for her revenge plan and offers wanting a part of it for the credit for his career. But Brenda is not fooled and before she can shoot either one of them, Reese revives and shoots Brenda. However, as Paul and Natalie are driving away to find help and safety, Brenda sits up in the back seat of their car and attacks them in the same manner she killed Michelle in the opening scene. Paul smashes the car into a guardrail and Brenda smashes through the windshield and off a bridge into a river far below. Some time later at another college campus, a group of college students are discussing the recent Pendleton Massacre and about the urban legends, when one student, whom is the alive and well, Brenda with a different haircut, offers to tell them the real story about all of it.
