The film starts with Ashley Ratcliff (Storm Reid) calling her detective uncle Jack (David Oyelowo) to pick her up from the movies since her father forgot and her mother is too busy. Jack gets her and takes her to a diner for a meal. They discuss Ashley's father/Jack's brother Garret (Brian Tyree Henry), an aspiring musician/drug dealer whom both of them see as a screw-up. Jack promises to set Garret straight. The next day at work, Jack gets a phone call from Ashley, who says that Garret appears to be trying to do better after Jack apparently reamed him for neglecting his daughter. Hours later, Jack gets what sounds like a frantic call from Ashley. He rushes to her house and finds Garret dead, along with his wife Susan (Shinelle Azoroh) lying on the floor in her own blood. Their dog Wilco is dead too. Jack then tensely walks up to the bathroom, and to his horror, he finds Ashley dead in the shower. The case is ruled a murder-suicide, and Jack feels responsible for what he told Garret. Jack is supported by his partner Bobby (Mykelti Williamson) Two weeks later, Jack is still shaken from the scene. He then receives a strange phone call coming from Ashley's phone. He checks the evidence room for her phone and finds it there, meaning it can't be some kind of prank. He takes the phone and goes back to Garret's house where he starts speaking to what sounds like Ashley's voice. Jack is in utter disbelief. Bobby visits Jack to let him know that Internal Affairs is considering Jack as a suspect in his family's deaths. He is interviewed by IA agent Roger Lee (Byron Mann), who presses Jack with questions on what motivation he could have had to get rid of his family, like perhaps he was attracted to Susan and wanted Garret out of the way. Jack gets another call from Ashley. She starts repeating the same conversation she had with him right before she died (mentioning how Jack gave Garret an "ear-full" and ordering a garlic chicken dish Jack always recommended). As he walks around her house again, Jack asks Ashley to walk to the shed outside and tell him what she sees. She mentions a spray paint can and he tells her to paint a big red X on the shed's doors. Moments later, Jack closes the doors outside and sees the big X, to his surprise. Jack soon realizes that Ashley is calling him from two weeks in the past, days before her murder. He then hears Ashley saying she sees her father talking to someone that pulled up in a white car. Jack tells Ashley to try and make out the license plate, but she can't. At work, Jack starts to obsessively go over the case files and crime scene photos to try and find some kind of clue as to how to prevent his family's deaths. This brings the attention of his boss, Howard (Alfred Molina), who is growing concerned with Jack's behavior and suggests that he try to move on. Meanwhile in the past, Ashley tries to look into what her father is involved with per Jack's requests. She gets him the name "Georgie". Jack brings it up to Howard, who says that "Georgie" is a mysterious crime figure that has evaded capture for a long time. It is believed that Garret had drug dealings with Georgie that went bad, which led to the murders. Jack continues to investigate and realizes the murders were staged. Ashley calls Jack again and says she found Garret's day planner with Georgie's address. She tells him that she and Wilco are walking toward Jack's house, but Jack urges her to turn around due to Past-Jack not having any idea what is going on. When Jack gets back to his house, some gangsters drive by and shoot at him. He is shot in the side, but is otherwise fine. Jack takes himself to the police station and goes back into the evidence storage room with Bobby, who tries to send him to the hospital. Jack gets called by Ashley again, but he continues to dodge the truth to her and only tells her to call the cops and tell them to arrest Garret because someone is coming to kill him. He also mentions drugs that were found under the bed from the crime scene. Jack gives her Bobby's number to let him know that she needs help just as he passes out from blood loss. Medics show up to revive him. Ashley goes to Jack's house and asks him questions that he has no idea about. She becomes angered due to her belief that Jack is messing with her and keeping something from her. She tells him to leave her alone. When she returns home, she sees Garret playing the guitar while Susan watches. Ashley tries talking to her parents. It later leads to her and her family's murders again, only it happens a day earlier than it originally happened, and Ashley is found dead in her bedroom as she tried but failed to escape from there. This erases the current time-line that Jack was in. Jack remembers what has happened and he and Bobby arm themselves as he thinks Georgie's thugs are going to come after him again. In the past, Ashley (still alive) rides her bike to the warehouse where Garret is meeting with Georgie. She is spotted and then flees on her bike while being followed by a man. As she crosses the barrens, her backpack falls and gets wet, which is something Jack recognizes from a crime scene photo in which Ashley's bag was found wet. Ashley manages to evade the thug and she calls Jack, who is attacked and shot at again. He tells her to go to a diner, which he also goes to and sits in the same booth she is in. He tests her by having her chew gum and stick it under the table, which he then pulls off and describes to her. He tells her that they are communicating two weeks apart from each other, and he tells her that she and her family will be murdered if they don't stop her father's involvement with Georgie. Jack goes back to the police station to look inside the evidence room. Howard and Bobby confront him as he tries looking for Ashley's backpack. After he tells them some information he learned from Ashley, Bobby chimes in that Roger Lee's license number matches the one that Ashley gave Jack, meaning that Lee might be Georgie. Howard then states that "Georgie" isn't one person, but a whole group of dirty cops involved in major criminal activities. The three drive off outside of town to continue an investigation. Just when it appears that Howard might be involved with Georgie, Bobby shoots him dead and reveals himself as the one who killed Garret, Susan, and Ashley. In the past, Bobby becomes aware that Ashley has been snooping around, and he goes to take care of her and her family. Present-Bobby is getting ready to kill Jack as he is trying to get in touch with Ashley. Garret tries reasoning with Bobby, as it becomes clear that the two were involved in the drug trade, but Bobby shoots him in the face before killing Wilco and then going after Susan and Ashley. He kills Susan, but Ashley makes it out of the house after smashing her bedroom window since Jack told her she couldn't get it open. She runs to Jack's house for protection, and Bobby follows her. Ashley gets Jack's attention and he sees what Bobby is up to. Before Bobby can kill Jack in the present, Jack shoots him dead in the past. The bad time-line is erased. Jack comforts a crying Ashley.

Jennifer Remming (Jenn) goes on an ocean excursion with her boyfriend Lucas Griffin, Mia Reed, and strangers Brad and Zach. After their boat is destroyed during a storm, Jenn washes ashore a deserted island. Brad also ends up on the island, but dies from his wounds. Jenn buries Brad's body only to find it dug up and missing the following morning. While swimming, Jenn discovers a bottomless black hole in the ocean floor not far from the beach. Jenn fires a flare when a plane passes overhead during the night. Jenn fires too late for the plane to spot her, although she illuminates a frightening creature standing in the sea. Jenn sleeps inside a hollow log for protection. The creature attacks Jenn's log, but returns to the water at daybreak. Jenn uses a small shark caught by spear-fishing to bait the creature the next night. However, the creature merely tears the meat from the rope and disappears again. Zach's dead body washes ashore bearing unusual knife wounds. Jenn uses the body to bait the creature, but it escapes again. Jenn builds a suspended hammock so she can sleep out of the creature's reach. The creature still pulls Jenn down, but she manages to hide until the creature retreats at dawn. After a full week passes, Lucas and Mia arrive on the island in a raft. Jenn warns Lucas and Mia that there is an amphibious monster that drags its prey back to a hole in the ocean, but they do not believe her. Jenn proposes escaping the island in the raft, but Lucas and Mia furtively refuse to leave. Jenn finds blood on Lucas' pocketknife. Jenn also becomes suspicious of Lucas and Mia's relationship. Jenn tries fleeing in the raft alone, but Mia knocks Jenn unconscious and Lucas ties her to a tree. When Jenn recovers, Lucas confronts her about their troubled relationship. Jenn asks Lucas what happened to Zach, but they are interrupted when the creature attacks Mia and pulls her into the ocean. The next day, Jenn and Lucas pack the raft with supplies and set out to sea. Jenn notices that the inside of the raft is covered in Zach's blood. The creature attacks the raft and pulls Jenn underwater. Jenn fights back using the pocketknife. The creature attacks Lucas and pulls him into its hole instead. Jenn returns to the island. During daylight, Jenn prepares kindling and makeshift spears for battling the creature. The creature swims ashore at nightfall for a fiery final confrontation. Jenn ultimately kills the monster.

An ex-felon discovers a live baby left in a dumpster. About a convict -Russ Millings - who has just been released from prison after serving 20 years for possessing an ounce of marijuana. Teenager Maggie Thompson moves with her mother Erica to her Ohio hometown after Erica's husband leaves her. At her new high school, Maggie befriends Haley, Darrell, Chaz, and Andy, who immediately develops a crush on her. They convince Sue Ann "Ma" Ellington, a veterinary technician, to help them buy alcohol because they are underage. Sue Ann anonymously reports the teenagers' activities, but they are released because of the officer's history with Andy's father, Ben. The next day, Sue Ann invites the teenagers to drink in her basement. The next time they go, Sue Ann has decorated her basement and lots of other teenagers show up at her house to party, making her popular among the students. However, her hospitality starts to annoy the group as she continuously harasses them to engage in various activities with her. One night, Sue Ann sees Andy and Maggie kissing and becomes jealous (as she is in love with him, having had a crush on his father, Ben, in high school). She drugs Maggie immediately after and takes her earrings. The next morning, Maggie wakes up and notices her earrings are missing and is badly bruised and cut. Scared, Maggie tells Andy that she does not want to go to her house anymore and that she does not want him to go as well and he agrees. One day to earn the group's trust back, Ma meets with them to tell them that she has pancreatic cancer (which is a lie) and that is why she acts the way she does. As she is talking, Haley notices that she is wearing a bracelet that belongs to a friend of theirs. The girls suspect that Sue Ann has been stealing their jewelry so they go to her house to investigate. They are surprised by Genie, Sue Ann's daughter from a failed marriage, who Maggie thought used a wheelchair, but she is clearly able-bodied. She warns them as Sue Ann arrives home, and they narrowly escape. Ben shows up at Sue Ann's job, to drop off his cat and invites her out for drinks after work. Sue Ann goes home to change and meets him at the bar, where Ben confronts Sue Ann with a tracking device and asks her why his son has been at her house so much. Ben warns Sue Ann to stay away from Andy, calling her pathetic. A flashback reveals that Sue Ann, who had a crush on Ben in high school, performed fellatio on him in a closet. Once she left the closet, it turned out that she had been doing it to another boy and Ben had tricked her. Ben had gotten the entire school to witness the event (including his current girlfriend Mercedes and a young Erica), and Sue Ann suffered devastating humiliation, which she never recovered from. An increasingly unstable Sue Ann runs over Mercedes with her truck, killing her. She kills her boss, draws blood from Maggie's dog Louie, and lures Ben to her house, where she knocks him out. Ben wakes up trapped in her bed; Sue Ann pumps Louie's blood into his body, slashes his wrist, and leaves him to die. Maggie tells her mother the truth about Sue Ann and is grounded. Sue Ann sends Maggie a picture of herself with Andy in her basement at Chaz's birthday party. Hurt that he went back to her house despite promising that he would not go back, she sneaks out of the house to confront him. When she arrives, she notices that everyone has left and that only the original group remain. She tries to get Andy to leave but soon realizes that Andy and the rest of her friends have been drugged. Maggie tries to get help and in the process finds Ben's body. As she stands there in horror, Sue Ann renders her unconscious. Maggie awakens chained in the basement. Sue Ann irons Chaz's stomach, sews Haley's mouth shut, and paints Darrell's face white with industrial paint, because she feels there is only room for one black person in the group, and that is her. Andy awakens, and tries to seduce Sue Ann, as he is well aware that she is in love with him. He tries to trick her by telling her that he loves her and kisses her but she stabs him after knowing that he is lying. An officer arrives and when Maggie screams for help, Sue Ann shoots the officer dead before he can react. She then gathers the four friends around the couch with her and makes Maggie take photos of them together in a crude recreation of what Sue Ann always longed for but never had. Sue Ann then leaves Maggie to be hanged before Genie intervenes. Everyone else wakes up to discover what Sue Ann has done to them but barely have time to react as the house is on fire and need to find a way out. Erica, knowing where Maggie would be, calls her co-worker Stu for help and the two save the teenagers. Sue Ann attempts to throw Genie into the fire, blaming Erica for not stopping Ben from pulling the prank in school. Maggie stabs Sue Ann, saving Genie. The group goes outside and asks what has happened. Sue Ann watches them, particularly Andy who survived the stabbing and is lying down next to Maggie. Sue Ann walks upstairs and lies down next to Ben's body, cuddling with it as the house burns.

Teenage friends Victor, Lex, Scott, Nick, and Marcus record a video of them doing a variation of 'The Charlie Charlie Challenge' by having Victor read a passage from 'The Gallows,' the reportedly cursed play that killed high school actor Charlie Grimille. Paranormal activity seemingly plagues the basement. Later, Victor finds Marcus hanged outside with swing set chains. The supposedly supernatural serial killer The Hangman strangles Victor with another chain. Aspiring actress Auna Rue moves in with her prop and dressmaker sister Lisa so she can attend Fellbrook High School, which has a prestigious drama program. On her first day, Auna embarrasses herself in front of Mr. Schlake's class by poorly performing a monologue from 'Return to Thayolund,' a fantasy movie Auna has been obsessed with since childhood. Auna recovers somewhat when schoolmate Cade Parker takes a romantic interest in her. A user named 'almostfamous99' interacts with Auna via chat on her unpopular YouTube channel. Almostfamous99 links Auna to Victor's viral video of having apparently conjured paranormal activity by reading from The Gallows. Desperate to bump up her subscriber base after seeing Victor's video had 16 million views, Auna obtains a copy of The Gallows from the school library. Auna becomes unusually obsessed with the play and later uploads a video of her reading from it. Auna becomes the star of Mr. Schlake's class when she performs a monologue from The Gallows. Auna's video also balloons in popularity after viewers notice a table moving during her reading. Auna records a second reading during which an object flies across her bedroom. Auna and Cade bond during an ice cream date. Cade introduces Auna to his parents, who turn out to be famous actors Craig and Kate Parker. While Cade stops at a gas station, Auna becomes spooked by the brief reflection of a hanging man in the rearview mirror. Two young girls claiming to be new fans of Auna's YouTube channel recognize Auna and ask for a selfie, which is how Auna learns a figure appeared behind her during the second video. Another message from almostfamous99 directs Auna to a Charlie Challenge fan page. There, Auna learns about Charlie Grimille while browsing videos of hanging deaths and paranormal activity. Apparent paranormal activity slams a closet door on Auna's hand. Auna briefly sees The Hangman stalking her in Lisa's home. At a party, Auna and Cade sneak away to a treehouse to make out. Auna becomes entranced and has a vision of The Hangman killing Cade. Rattled, Auna demands to go home when she realizes she had been choking Cade while they were kissing. 'Return to Thayolund' suddenly starts playing on Lisa's TV. The Hangman stalks Lisa until Auna returns home. As haunting visions continue unraveling her mind, Auna tells Mr. Schlake she doesn't want to read from The Gallows anymore. Auna somehow still recites a monologue from the play even though she thought she was performing Return to Thayolund. Auna blocks almostfamous99 when his messages turn taunting. Auna also starts watching distressing confessional videos posted by Victor's friend Lex, who reveals a disfiguring mark on her neck similar to one that Auna mysteriously obtained. Lisa follows a rope to a tree outside where she finds her dog hanging dead. Claiming it is hurting them both, Lisa rips up Auna's copy of the play. An argument causes Lisa to lash out by saying Auna isn't talented enough to be a successful actress. Auna unsuccessfully tries to intervene via text when she watches Lex, distraught with suicidal tendencies, prepare to hang herself during a livestream. The Hangman seemingly kills Lex. Auna finds her copy of The Gallows mysteriously returned to her back pocket. Auna performs a passage from the play for NYU talent scout Scott Lamont. As he offers her a full scholarship following her reading, Auna envisions a noose strangling Lamont. Lisa packs to leave for a show she is working on, but her suitcase inexplicably vanishes from her hand and returns to her bed. Paranormal activity violently shakes Lisa's house. The Hangman strangles Lisa. Cade researches the deaths that took place at Beatrice High School. An article suggests invoking Charlie Grimille's name summons the hangman character he was supposed to play in The Gallows. Footage from a police officer's bodycam shows a ghost killing the cops who arrested Pfeifer Ross, the crazed daughter of Charlie Grimille, and her mother. Cade discovers that the two women were committed to a nearby mental hospital. With almostfamous99 still harassing her online, Cade takes Auna to see Pfeifer in hopes of finding a way to stop The Hangman's curse. Pfeifer claims the only way to appease The Hangman is to offer a willing sacrifice to be killed. Cade and Auna are abducted outside the asylum. They recover to find themselves on a gallows with nooses around their necks in a forest. The Hangman appears. A hooded executioner tells the duo they must decide who will be sacrificed. Before Auna can stop him, Cade volunteers. A trap door opens beneath his feet and Cade begins hanging. Auna offers her life to save Cade's. Another trap door opens and Auna hangs. After Auna dies, additional hangmen emerge from the forest. They unmask to reveal Victor, Lex, Cade's parents, and Auna's two fans from the gas station among many other participants in a conspiracy to drive Auna mad. Cade removes his harness. Cade identifies himself as almostfamous99 while addressing a camera to proclaim their cabal executed a perfect Charlie Challenge.

Bored, he and Kent wander the empty house. In the master bedroom closet he finds a deck of playing cards with photos of nude women on them. One catches his attention, he is positive the woman in the photo is his mother. Derek, June, and other kids enter the large empty closet. Derek begins a game of 'Seven in Heaven', with winning cards sending Jude and June to sit for seven minutes in a just discovered secret closet. While waiting June offers to fool around with Jude, despite them both having significant others. Upon exiting the closet they discover they have traveled to an alternate reality, more violent and dangerous than home. Jude and June are quickly separated by the rowdy party, Jude being beaten up by a crowd in the closet and June running away to get a drink. Jude escapes and heads home, where he is attacked by his father, who in his reality is dead. His parents reveal he has been accused of murdering his acquaintance Derek. When he runs to his bedroom he finds that this dimension's version of himself is dark and violent. His bedroom is adorned with heavy metal posters, goth clothing, and disturbing photos. As the police are looking for him he escapes out his bedroom window. He is soon found by his guidance counselor, Mr. Wallace, who is oddly informed about this dimension and that Jude does not belong there. He punches Jude, and at first tries to put him in the trunk of his car. When Jude does not fit, he instead shoves him into his back seat. He directs Jude to leave the dimension as soon as possible through the closet he came from, dropping him off at David's home. Jude sneaks past David and his parent to the master bedroom and enters the closet, where he sets a timer for seven minutes. While waiting he retrieves a pencil from his pocket and scratches 'GET ME HOME' above the door. When he exits the closet again he discovers he is still trapped in the alternate dimension. He decides to look for June in the hope that if they try leaving through the closet together they will return home. He finds June's address and is tackled by her outside her home. She was hiding in a tree from men that attacked her after she left the closet. Jude explains they are in another dimension but June does not believe him. He suggests she look around her home for proof, where she finds family photos she does not remember taking, and her sister, who in her dimension is at boarding school, in her bedroom. Her sister attacks her and attempts to smother her to death with a pillow. Jude hears the struggling and bursts into the room, separating the sisters. He and June run outside, hiding from passing cars as they try to come up with a plan to get home. Mr. Wallace drives by them, and again stops to help. Jude and June at first hide from him, but a phone call from Jude's mother alerts him to their presence. He directs them again to try the closet a second time now that they are back together. Jude states he cannot access Davids house since the police are searching for him. Mr. Wallace drives them to David's home and somehow is able to convince the police, David, and David's parents, to let Jude and June in and to the closet. They enter again, and while they wait have sex for three minutes. In the remaining four minutes Jude comments that it was his first time, and is unsure if he performed well. June responds that it was not her first time, and he did fine. In their home reality Jude and June's friends have opened the closet and discovered it empty. The house is searched for them but no one can explain how they disappeared. Kent and Derek try calling them but both numbers have an out of service recording. The party continues during this, including the arrival of the police due to a noise disturbance call. David reassures the police they will be quiet and the officer leaves. Nell arrives and is told by Kent that Jude and June are missing. Kent sits in the closet for seven minutes and has a vision of Jude being beaten up. He realizes that Jude and June are not in their dimension anymore and are in trouble. He convinces Nell to sit in the closet as well, but she only has a small vision of Jude and June in the closet, hearing June offer for Jude to touch her. She does not believe that they have disappeared. The police return to David's house because of another noise complaint. They ask to come in, Kent refuses as they do not have a warrant. The police sit outside, frustrated they have no legal way to enter the home. Inside, David, Kent, and the rest of the party begin cleaning up the mess they created. Kent warns everyone not to leave, or they will be arrested and their parents called. A few younger teenagers sneak out the back and are promptly arrested, proving Kent's point. The police resort to calling the parents of several students. As parents arrive they demand their children come outside, threatening various punishments. The teenagers still refuse, quietly attempting to wait out the police and their parents. In the alternate dimension, Jude and June have waited inside the closet again for seven minutes. Opening the door they find David's house completely empty and quiet. Jude and June begin to walk home. Jude's mom calls him, asking where he is. She tells him she tried to pick him up from the party but no one was there. He asks where everyone is but she replies that it is late and that he come straight home. Suddenly a car appears behind them. Recognizing the car as Mr. Wallace, the car revs and speeds towards them as they try to run away. Eventually they escape, but are lost, unable to find David's house, wandering various empty streets. They realize they are in a new, different dimension. Jude receives a call from Nell, who tells him to come to Kent's house. Kent's home is dark and seemingly empty. Following a dim light they walk through a kitchen and to a set of stairs leading down. Suddenly Kent, Nell, Derek, and other classmates appear. Derek says they will play another game, similar to Truth or Dare, called Lie or Die. June says that Jude never touched her as they are led into an auditorium. Everyone in seated as a projector screen shows June's sister. She is then smothered to death by a pillow since June lied about what happened in the closet between her and Jude. Then Jude told them a truth that his dad died from a car accident, then he is shown on the screen that deer rammed in on the driver side. The questions continue, a scared and angry Jude flips the game on the crowd. He and June end up asking the crowd questions, the game working in their favor. The crowd gets angry and charges at them, as they escape through a back door and eventually out back into the street. They are found again by Mr. Wallace, and convince him to take them back to the house to escape through the closet. Mr. Wallace explains that this dimension is where everyone's worst thoughts take over. The crowd continues to follow them as they speed toward the house and Jude concocts a plan to help them get home. In their home dimension, David and the rest of the party watch from the windows as a crowd of parents and police wait. David's grandmother arrives with a spare key to enter the house. She unlocks the door, inviting everyone in as she leaves. In the alternate dimension, Jude and June are escaping into the house while Mr. Wallace helps them by burning down the house to "reset" the game. The angry crowd is stopped outside, watching as the house burns. Jude explains how the house burning will help them get home, convincing June that they will get home. They struggle to breathe in the smoke filled room as the clock counts down. Back home, the police are releasing each kid to their parents. It is light outside. Jude and June's parents wait outside, worried about their missing children. Jude and June carefully leave the closet, discovering the house empty and daylight outside. On the lawn the crowd of teenagers, parents, and police stare at them as they walk hand in hand. Jude asks for the crowd to give them a few moments of silence, during which he exclaims that he did not kill Derek, as well as asking Kent if they are friends. They discover they are home, and that their friends have been searching for them all night. Mr. Wallace arrives and welcomes them home. Unbeknownst to everyone, Derek has gone inside and entered the closet. A police officer goes inside to search for him. Derek is shown in the closet having visions of June and Jude making love, followed by Jude stabbing him in the shoulder. The officer opens the secret closet as the light bulb burns out, finding it empty except for the bloody pencil Jude had dropped there. This ironically creates the implication that Jude will once again occupy a reality where he is suspected to have killed Derek.

While visiting his home, Eron reveals his latest creation, an AI chip called STEM (Simon Maiden) that can serve as an auxiliary brain. On their way home, Grey and Asha's self-driving car malfunctions and crashes at a homeless camp. Four unknown men then arrive, shooting Asha in the stomach and Grey in the neck, severing his spinal cord. Grey watches helplessly as Asha bleeds to death next to him. Grey returns home months later as a wheelchair-bound quadriplegic, now under the care of his mother Pamela (Linda Cropper). Asha's death and the inability of Cortez (Betty Gabriel), the detective assigned to her case, to identify their attackers has caused Grey to sink into an intense depression. After a failed suicide attempt by overdosing on medication, he is visited by Eron, who offers to surgically implant STEM into Grey's spine and restore motor functions to his body. Though Grey is initially resistant, Eron successfully persuades him to undergo the surgery. Grey goes through with the surgery and regains control of his limbs faster than expected. Eron then has Grey sign a non-disclosure agreement to conceal STEM from everyone, including the police, and pretend to still be paralyzed when in public. While looking through case files on his wife's murder that night, Grey hears STEM speak into his mind. STEM says it can help Grey get revenge and quickly identifies one of the assailants, a local man named Serk Brantner (Richard Cawthorne), from a drone video feed. STEM also discovers that Serk and the assailants had modified guns implanted into their arms, explaining why police were unable to identify a murder weapon. Grey decides to investigate Serk personally. Grey breaks into Serk's home and discovers he was "upgraded" as a result of a secret military experiment, which connects him and another assailant to a local bar called the Old Bones. Serk then returns home and discovers Grey, leading to a fight between the two. As Serk begins to overpower Grey, STEM convinces Grey to temporarily give up control of his body. Under STEM's direction, Grey becomes a lethally efficient fighting machine, killing Serk with little effort. Though they attempt to cover their tracks, Cortez sees drone footage of Grey approaching Serk's house before the murder. However, she lacks evidence connecting Grey to Serk's murder, or proof that he is capable of assaulting a person given his quadriplegic condition. Eron learns what happened by tracking STEM's movements and berates Grey for his vigilantism. Grey reveals STEM is speaking to him, which surprises Eron, who demands that Grey stop any further investigation. Nonetheless, Grey proceeds to the Old Bones and finds the next assailant (Tolan) (Christopher Kirby). With STEM's aid, Grey easily overpowers him. Although initially squeamish, Grey allows STEM to torture Tolan to death, but not before getting the name of the assailants' ringleader, Fisk Brantner (Benedict Hardie). Grey also finds that the assailants had been paid by somebody to kill Asha. and they all had implants from the company where she worked. While leaving the bar, Grey collapses onto the ground. STEM informs Grey that Eron is attempting to shut them down remotely and directs him to a hacker nearby who can sever Eron's connection. After an arduous struggle, Grey finds the hacker, Jamie (Kai Bradley), who manages to remove STEM's input guard. Jamie then abandons them upon realizing they've been followed by the assailants and two armed Vessel employees. Fisk kills the Vessel employees while Grey, with STEM's control restored, murders Fisk's companion, Jeffries (Michael M. Foster). Grey returns home only for Pamela to discover him walking about, forcing him to reveal STEM's existence. Cortez then arrives to interrogate them after finding Grey's wheelchair suspiciously abandoned at the Old Bones. Unable to get either of them to confess, she leaves after discreetly planting a listening device on Grey's jacket. Exhausted and broken up over the murders he has committed, Grey wishes to give up. STEM refuses, telling Grey that unless they deal with Fisk, he will eventually track them down and kill them. Demonstrating that without Eron's input guards, it no longer needs to obey Grey's commands, STEM then forces Grey to leave the house to hunt down Fisk. While driving, they discover Cortez's listening device and spot her car chasing after them. STEM then causes an automated car to malfunction and crash into hers so they can escape. Cortez returns to Grey's home shortly after, where Pamela reveals the truth about STEM. Grey and STEM eventually find Fisk, threatening him at gunpoint to reveal why he killed Asha. Fisk reveals he was only hired to paralyze Grey so he could be implanted with STEM. Grey then attacks Fisk, who is so upgraded that he can outpace Grey's movements. STEM begs Grey to come up with some distraction, whereupon Grey taunts Fisk with the death of his brother. The emotional strain is enough for STEM to gain the upper hand and kill Fisk. Grey then searches Fisk's phone and discovers a message from Eron, suggesting he orchestrated everything to make Grey the ideal test subject for STEM. Grey assaults Eron's home, only to be held at gunpoint by Cortez before he can kill Eron. Eron then reveals that STEM had forced him to set things in motion from the beginning, having long since taken control of Eron's life and his company in pursuit of its goal to become human. When it learned that Grey's body was completely not augmented, it caused the car crash and directed Eron to say exactly the right things so that Grey would agree to its surgical insertion. After revealing its plan, STEM kills Eron and attempts to kill Cortez. In a desperate effort to resist STEM, Grey forces his arm towards his neck and shoots himself. Grey suddenly wakes up in a hospital bed, fully in control of his body with Asha sitting by his side. He is convinced everything that happened was a bad dream experienced after surviving the car crash. The truth, however, is revealed as the scene cuts back to Eron's home. STEM, now speaking through Grey's body, tells Cortez that Grey is "not here anymore"; because of the psychological strain he exerted attempting to resist STEM's control, Grey's mind snapped, and STEM placed his consciousness into an idyllic fantasy world to live out the rest of his existence peacefully. With every other loose end tied off, STEM murders Cortez and leaves to enter society with its new body.

While getting furniture for their house, a man (Joel Edgerton) approaches Simon and claims to know him from high school. Simon doesn't recognize him until the man says his name is Gordon Mosely, or simply Gordo. He politely welcomes the couple to the area and leaves. Gordo first drops off a bottle of wine on the couple's doorstep as a welcoming gift. He later shows up while Simon is at work. Robyn invites him in and takes him on a tour of the house. In one room, they find a giant toy monkey, and Robyn tells Gordo that Simon has a phobia of monkeys. Robyn invites Gordo to stay for dinner. When Simon joins them, Gordo tells Robyn about how Simon used to have a campaign for class president and using "Simon Says" as his slogan, and it would get him anything he wanted. A little too drunk from wine, Gordo comments that "Simon Says..." applies to all the nice things Simon has in his life (great home, beautiful wife, nice job, etc.) which makes the couple a bit uncomfortable. Simon doesn't approve of Gordo visiting them, even crossing his name out over his phone number on the fridge and writing "Weirdo," as that was Gordo's nickname in high school. Gordo continues to come to their house when Simon is at work, and he leaves gifts like a bunch of koi fish for the pond in front of their home, and he gets their cable TV working. He walks into the kitchen and sees "Weirdo" written on the fridge and leaves offended. To Robyn's surprise, Gordo later invites the couple over for a dinner party. Simon and Robyn go to a surprisingly nice home for the party. Gordo tells them that the other couple he invited just canceled on them. During the conversation, he mentions that he is not married. Gordo then gets a phone call which he claims is from work and he leaves Simon and Robyn home alone. Simon then starts making rude comments about Gordo, saying that he has a crush on Robyn and wants to do perverted things to her. Simon then suggests they go exploring the house. They find a bedroom with women's clothing, as well as what appears to be a child's bedroom. They hear Gordo's car returning, and they run back to the living room. When Gordo comes back inside, Simon asks him what he does for work. Gordo says that he lied and that he took a call from his ex-wife and admitted that it was a heated conversation. Simon insists that Robyn leave the room and Simon forcefully tells Gordo that he doesn't want him visiting them anymore. The next morning, Robyn thinks she hears noises while home alone. She goes outside and discovers that the koi fish are dead, and their dog, Mr. Bojangles, is nowhere to be found. Simon later goes back to Gordo's house, being greeted at the door by a woman whom he thinks is Gordo's wife. It turns out that Gordo doesn't live there. The Callums call the cops and find out that the couple in the house did know Gordo, and he had a key, since he handled their leased cars, and he had apparently used the key to get inside while the couple was on vacation. Without sufficient evidence, the cops can't do more than question Gordo, and they observe that Gordo would know who sent the authorities to him. Simon is being considered for a promotion at work, and after a good meeting with the two men who head the company, a colleague tells him that he has only one competitor for the position, Danny McDonald (PJ Byrne). Robyn continues to feel like Gordo is watching her at home. She takes some prescription pills that she pinched from their next-door neighbor, and she faints in the bedroom. She awakens to find herself lying on the bed. At night, Robyn walks into the kitchen and thinks she hears a noise. A thump is heard at the door. It's Bojangles, safely returned home. Robyn wakes Simon up, and they talk in the kitchen as Simon mentions he was going to tell Robyn that he got a promotion at work, but he found her passed out. He also takes out the pills he found and thinks that Robyn has had a relapse after previously abusing pills during their stay in Chicago. Robyn argues that Simon doesn't believe her suspicions about Gordo. Simon just thinks that the man has had a negative influence on their lives and it would be best to forget about him and move on. Over the next few months, Robyn becomes pregnant again. The couple lives on just fine until Robyn is told that a man is watching her at work. It's Gordo. Later, the couple finds a letter that apologizes for him bothering them, and he addresses Simon by saying he was willing to let "bygones be bygones." Simon denies knowing what Gordo is talking about. The couple goes to a baby shower for Robyn. She later takes a walk with Simon's sister Joan (Katie Aselton). Robyn asks her if she knew anything about Gordo. Joan says that it was reported that Simon and his friend Greg (David Denman) found Gordo in a car being molested by an older student, and this made everyone think he was gay. Robyn looks up Greg's name online and finds that he's a chiropractor. She makes an appointment to see him and starts to ask him about what happened between Simon and Gordo. Greg does not want to answer her questions but finally tells her that Simon made up the story about Gordo being molested because Simon was a bully and frequently targeted Gordo. This story also led to Gordo's father trying to burn him alive after thinking he was gay, resulting in his father's arrest. Robyn goes to Simon's home office and searches his desk, finding two files. One contains information about Gordo, and the other is about Danny McDonald, the other finalist for the job that Simon is hoping to get. She sees a mugshot of Gordo, as he was apparently arrested years ago for burglary. Robyn later confronts Simon when he gets home, and he callously states that while he did not know what Gordo's father tried doing to him, he doesn't care since his dad was hard on him, but he toughed it out and didn't feel he's done anything wrong. He starts to comment on Robyn taking pills, and she slaps him, saying he's just as much a bully now as he was back then. Simon later apologized to her and said he did a background check on Gordo to protect themselves. Simon goes to a bar where Gordo is hosting a trivia contest. Afterward, Simon finds Gordo in a parking garage and gives him a half-hearted apology, mainly because Robyn told him to. Gordo says it's too late for that, and while Simon thinks he's done with the past, the past isn't done with him. Simon knocks a basket out of Gordo's hands, spilling papers everywhere. Simon then kicks Gordo as he tries to pick them up, then presses him against the pavement, demanding that he accept his apology. Simon leaves and goes home to tell Robyn that Gordo won't bother them again. Simon gets the job, and the Callums host a dinner party to celebrate. A clattering sound is heard from upstairs, followed by another, and then something is thrown through the glass door, triggering the security system. Simon runs outside and sees someone running away. He tackles the man to the ground, thinking it's Gordo, but it is Danny McDonald, angry with Simon for fabricating information about him that not only cost him the promotion, but it also cost him his current job. Police sirens are heard, and Danny starts begging to be let go. Simon relents and allows him to leave. Robyn then announces that she's going into labor. Robyn gives birth to a healthy baby boy. However, she tells Simon that she doesn't want to go back home with him due to all the drama and madness he's caused. When he leaves her room, he gets a call from work saying he's being let go after word got out that he lied about Danny. Simon returns home to find a big wrapped box outside. In it is a baby bassinet the, and three numbered boxes. The first one contains a key to their house, showing how Gordo has been getting in and around their home. The second box has a tape that recorded Simon mocking Gordo when he left them to take his phone call. The third box contains a DVD of recorded footage showing Simon and Robyn having dinner and sleeping. Then there's footage of Robyn when she passed out, followed by Gordo wearing a monkey mask (to spite Simon since he has a phobia of monkeys) and pulling Robyn onto the bed, stroking her and waving to the mirror. The footage cuts off, leaving Simon to think that Gordo may have raped Robyn. While Simon watches the DVD, Gordo visits Robyn in the hospital with flowers to congratulate her on her baby. He has a bruise on his face and his arm in a sling. Robyn asks if Simon did it. Gordo states merely that people will get what they deserve and he exits. Simon rushes back to the hospital and finds Gordo getting into an elevator, but he fails to catch him. Simon runs out the hospital to give chase and receives a call from Gordo. He demands to know if Gordo did what Simon thinks he did. Gordo says no but then suggests maybe he did, and this is what happens when a bad idea is put into someone's head. Simon goes to find the baby to get a better look at his eyes. It still doesn't let him know whether the baby is Simon's or Gordo's. Robyn holds the baby and looks at Simon with displeasure. Simon slumps against the wall and quietly weeps, knowing his whole life is now ruined. Gordo briefly watches Simon before leaving and removing the sling from his arm; his mission to heartlessly destroy Simon's life is now completed.
