Amar (Sanjeev Kumar), is a wealthy widower (he runs a successful toy store in the city) (he is empathetic and considerate to other feelings, especially to the treatment meted out to step children by mothers in 2nd marriages) who shares his house with his daughter Aarti and a servant Dayal (Mehmood) in the city of Bhopal. He is constantly bothered by his sister and brother-in-law (Anwar Hussain) (who was himself brought up by a stepmother), who want him to remarry - if not for his sake, then for the sake of his young daughter who needs the love of a mother. Amar having had enough reluctantly agrees to marry. They scout for potential wives, and decide to choose between two sisters-Shobha (Madhu Malini), and Sheela (Meena T.) who reside in Bombay. Since Amar has never met either of them, he is not sure if they will be the appropriate choice. In order to test them, when he visits them in Bombay - he decides to swap places with his servant Dayal. The party (Amar, Aarti and Dayal) arrive at the prospective-in-laws house, which features Durga (Lalita Pawar), as the arrogant and abusive prospective mother-in-law and her weak and helpless husband Shanti Swarup (Manmohan Krishna) and father of the two daughters. Shobha is dumb, while Sheela is a dancer, but doesn't like a groom who has a kid from the first marriage. Dayal (as Amar) is given a spacious room, and Amar (as Dayal) is settled into the servant's quarters, which consists of an untidy room with no electricity. Soon, Amar (the real one) realizes that he is in fact attracted to Geeta, played by Jaya Bhaduri, (the household servant). Geeta is an orphan who works in the house, and is mistreated by everyone except Shanti Swarup. Geeta sees that Aarti is very attached to Amar (as Dayal).. Amar (as Dayal) tells her that he considers Aarti as his own daughter and seeks a wife who will also treat her like a mother. The cooks (Shibban and Bansi) of the house befriend Amar (As Dayal). Durga had told the cooks to serve food cooked in oil, but the cooks ignore her and cook it in ghee. They inform Amar (As Dayal) that the whole house is full of deceptions. Shanti Swarup has no say and Durga runs the show. Shibban befriends Dayal (As Amar), who tells Shibban to go on strike to demand a pay rise from Durga, who has always refused it in the past and only pays them rs 50. But Durga is adamant and decides to fire them instead. She asks Dayal (As Amar) to deploy Amar (as Dayal) as the cook for the house. soon, Geeta realizes that Amar (as Dayal) cant cook and bails him out by helping to cook. When Dayal (As Amar) finds out, he goes rushing to the kitchen to help Amar (as Dayal) in the cooking. But then Durga arrives and starts helping out. Eventually Durga, Shobha and Sheela start working in the kitchen. Amar (as Dayal) has a sick stomach and is ordered out and Geeta helps Dayal (as Amar) to set up his bath. Amar cannot reveal himself and openly propose marriage to her, since he is posing as a servant. Amar (as Dayal) finally conjures up courage to face Geeta and admits his feelings for her and says he wants to marry her. Geeta is overjoyed and wants to meet Amar (as Dayal) but is afraid that Durga will never agree to the match. Jaggu (Jalal Agha) is a local grocer who supplies the Durga kitchen and is close to her. Jaggu always flirts with Geeta, which she does not like, but this time Amar (as Dayal) stands up for her and tells Jaggu to keep within his limits. Amar (As Dayal) figures out that while Shobha likes Dayal (as Amar), but Sheela doesn't. Durga suspects something is wrong & tries to get Aarti to tell the truth, but when Amar (as Dayal) tries to intervene, Durga is offended and slaps him hard. Meanwhile Amar (as Dayal) sees how Aarti is getting closer and closer to Geeta and now feels comfortable even sleeping with her. But Durga breaks all the toys that Geeta had made to entertain Aarti. Geeta is devastated. A side story features Dayal's younger brother Vijay, who is studying in Bombay and is supported by Dayal. It turns out in a fateful co-incidence, unbeknownst to her parents and to Dayal, that Vijay (Shailendra Singh) is Sheela's secret college boyfriend. Dayal (as Amar) discovers this by accident when on a date with Shobha; the two couples accidentally bump into each other in a club. Sheela introduces Dayal to Vijay as Amar. Vijay is intrigued. Dayal visits Vijay at his hostel and tells him the truth. Dayal tells Vijay that Amar might select Sheela as Aarti's mother and hence begs him to forget Sheela. Durga takes everyone out for sightseeing, but Geeta is at home. Jaggu arrives and tries to flirt. Geeta slaps Jaggu and then he tries to force himself upon her. Amar (As Dayal) intervenes and beats up Jaggu badly. eventually Geeta learns from Aarti that Amar (As Dayal) is her real dad and Dayal (as Amar) is a servant. When Aarti speaks to Amar, he says he likes Geeta, but says she is a maid and hence perhaps cant be her mother. Jaggu meanwhile speaks to Durga and asks for Geeta's hand in marriage. Durga accepts when she learns that Geeta loves Amar (as Dayal). Geeta decides to leave the house, but Durga is adamant that Geeta's mother left her in her care and as such it is Durga's right to marry her away to whomever she sees fit. Shanti SWarup asks Amar (as Dayal) to get Geeta back. He tells Amar (as Dayal) that Geeta is not a servant, but the daughter of Durga's friend. Geeta lost both her parents as a kid and Durga promised to bring her up as her own child. But over years, Durga treated Geeta only like a servant. Amar (as Dayal) catches up to Geeta and requests her to stop for Aarti's sake. Geeta addresses Amar as Amar and accepts his proposal. Thats when Jaggu shows up with goons. Amar beats them up, which is when police arrives as Durga had complained that Geeta had run away with house servant Dayal Meanwhile Amar's sister arrives at Durga's and recognizes Dayal as Dayal. Now Police arrives with Jaggu, Amar and Geeta. Shanti Swarup tells police to arrest Jaggu for harassing Geeta and recognizes Amar as Amar. Amar reveals that Sheela loves Vijay and Shobha loves Dayal. Durga is livid that both her daughters are wedding servants. Amar then accepts Geeta as his wife. Amar transfers his toy factory to Dayal and Vijay to make them his equals. Amar says that Dayal's dad died when he was young. Dayal sacrificed his life to educate Vijay and in the process brought up Amar as well. Dayal is a God to him. even then Durga refuses to marry her daughters to Dayal and Vijay. Now Shanti Swarup gets up and starts beating Durga to put her in her place. Geeta stops him. Durga apologizes for her behavior and agrees to the weddings.

Hangal) and niece Dolly (Baby Pinki). Hanuman Singh (Asrani) is his secretary. One night, while returning from a meeting, he sees a young woman thrown out of a moving car. His uncle Shiv insists they take her home and get her medical attention. He hesitatingly agrees and takes her to their home. The next morning, the young woman (Jaya Bhaduri) regains consciousness but is suffering from amnesia. She can't remember anything except that she is married to Devendra. She can't remember anything from her past - not even her name except that she is Mrs. Dutt. Everyone tries to convince her otherwise, but she insists she is in her own home. Deven thinks the woman is trying to dupe them for some money. Seeing her fragile state, Shiv, the police inspector and Doctor Irshad Hussain (Iftekar) decide to let her stay until someone comes for her. Deven is against this decision. They call her Anamika (meaning a woman with no name). Soon, Anamika takes control of the house and regulates Shiv's diet. Dolly becomes her best friend and confidante. Shiv is happy to have a daughter-in-law in the house. Deven hates it and keeps Anamika at a distance. He kicks her out whenever she tries to enter his room. Irshad advises Deven to take it easy as Deven's harshness could drive Anamika mad.. They post an advertisement for her in the newspaper but receive no response. Meanwhile, Devendra slowly grows close to her and secretly wishes that she would stay forever. One day Deven's publisher Naresh (Rajesh Behl) comes to the house & he recognizes Anamika, but doesn't say anything. That night 2 goons try to abduct Anamika, but Deven intervenes on time and saves her. On his uncle's suggestion, Devendra takes her to Shimla on holiday to further help her fragile recovery. There, he sees Anamika's photo in a studio and on further inquiry comes to know that she is the wife of a businessman Ganga Prasad Malhotra (Narendra Nath). Though heartbroken by the realization that she is married (he tracks the hotel whose address was in the studio's register and the receptionist remembers them as a couple. He gets Ganga's address from the receptionist), he goes to meet the Ganga is Bombay. Here, he is shocked to learn that Anamika isn't the businessman's wife, but his employee/escort Kanchan who accompanied him on his holiday to Shimla the previous year. Ganga asks Deven to ask dancer Rubai about Kanchan's past.. Rubai confirms that Kanchan was a prostitute who used to work for her.. Being already dumped by a former fiance, Devendra believes that Anamika, like all women, is immoral and after his money and throws her out of his house. She is promptly abducted by Naresh. Naresh calls her Archana and says that his own father gave all his wealth to her. He wants to her to sign it back to him. Archana signs the papers but starts a scuffle which results in a big fire in the warehouse where she was kept and Naresh is badly burnt. He later meets her at a ceremony where she is introduced to him as Mrs. Kashyap. Confused, Devendra pleads with her to tell him the truth. She finally narrates her past in flashback - an ardent fan of Devendra's novels, she was infatuated with him while in college. However, incessantly pursued by her classmate Naresh (Rajesh Behl), and helpless by her poverty, which is worsened by her mother's ill-health, she finally agrees to the marriage. On her wedding night, she learns that she is married to Naresh's brother Kashyap, who deserts her the same night believing himself undeserving of Anamika. Naresh now takes advantage of his brother's absence and continues to harass her. Archana's husband commits suicide as he was impotent.. His dad gets a stroke and decides to give all the wealth to Archana before dying as Naresh was always unfit for that responsibility.. She escapes from the house and joins a modeling company as Kanchan to start a new life. There, her boss tries to take advantage of her and when she resists, he blames her for the incident. She quits her job and Rubai (Helen), who had recommended her to the modeling job, outwardly sympathizes with her and puts her up in what she claims is a working women's hostel. A few days later, Anamika gets arrested with the rest of the girls in a police raid, which is when she realizes she had been staying at a brothel. But she is later released, based on the testimony of the other inmates and her own statement against Rubai. Rubai tries to exact revenge on Anamika for this and sends her goons to kill her. While attempting to escape the goons, Anamika jumps out of a moving car on the night that Devendra finds her. Anamika tells Devendra that when she regained her consciousness and discovered that she was at her favorite author's house, she decided to stay, come what may. After listening to all this, Devendra empathizes and reconciles with her. Just then, a badly burnt Naresh attacks them both, and after a prolonged cat-and-mouse chase in a darkened house, Naresh gets electrocuted.

Rai Sahab (Pran) is a retired colonel who lives in his family mansion with his five grandchildren (Rama, Ajay, Vijay, Neeta and Sanju). All five children are estranged from him as they believe he is responsible for their father Nilesh Rai's (Sanjeev Kumar) death. Rai Sahab is a strict disciplinarian who has become cold and miserable after Nilesh stubbornly leaves him to pursue music professionally against his wishes. After his son's death, he brings the children to live with him. Music was something Rai Saheb believes beneath their stature. This creates a rift between them, and Nilesh leaves to pursue his dream. He returns a few years later, now married to his music teacher's daughter Suajat. Rai Sahab welcomes them, but tells Nilesh that in order to live a life on his own terms he must make his own house. He never hears from his son for the next 17 years (since he didn't know where Nilesh had gone), although he waits desperately. When he finally learns his son is dead, he rushes and brings back his grandchildren to live with him, but despite his best efforts at providing them with all material comforts and facilities, they do not get along. However the children refuse to obey him and constantly flout his rules. Rai Sahab is desperately seeking a tutor for them, but no teacher lasts for more than a few weeks (the children play pranks on them and scare them away), as none of teachers can turn his 'savage' grandchildren into well-behaved people. Ravi (Jeetendra) is looking for a job in the city. He is a nice guy and gives up opportunities when he finds that he is replacing an old, loyal employee of a firm. Ravi gets a letter from his uncle, informing him of a job opening for a tutor at Rai Sahab's house in his village. Ravi has no parents but is close to his aunt (Leela Mishra) and uncle (A. K. Hangal), who live in the village. While he does not take to Rai Sahab's cold demeanor in their first meeting, he initially takes the job out of need (since the next opportunity is a few months away & he has no money to even buy proper shoes). Later Rai Sahab tells him he believes Ravi can set his grandchildren straight and implores him to do so. Ravi promises to try. Rai Saheb offers him a place to stay in his Haveli The children try their best to scare Ravi away, like they have with previous teachers, however instead of complaining about them Ravi laughs at their pranks and tries to befriend them. He realizes that Rai Sahab has strict rules against singing and laughing in the house, and that the children are not even allowed to play outside as they had once tried to run away. Unlike other teachers, Ravi does not believe in punishments or scoldings and instead tries to teach with humor, stories, music and play. He has a strict rule about not hitting kids with a cane and ignores their misdemeanors as pranks. He realizes quickly that the children do not need a teacher, but are starved of affection and stubborn like their grandfather, which is causing them to misbehave. Ravi also counsels Rama to not take offense at every little thing with Rai Saheb, as her behavior is reflected directly in the actions of the siblings, who go on strike with her and in the process hurt their own studies and future. When Rai Sahab leaves homes for a few weeks for work, Ravi opens up Nilesh's old room and starts playing his sitar. The children open up to him after this. He regularly takes them out on picnics, plays with them and tells them stories. All the children start studying with Ravi and their behavior changes, becoming more receptive and respectful of elders. Ravi and Rama (Jaya Bhaduri) the oldest of the siblings slowly begin to develop feelings for each other. Rama is eighteen and the daughter of Nilesh and Sujata (Geeta Siddharth). Rama's mother passed away when she was a little girl. She learned music from her father and is close and protective of her younger siblings. Though she initially leads siblings in all their mischief, she quickly warms up to Ravi's unique approach and eventually becomes an ideal granddaughter. Rama begrudges Rai Sahab as she believes he never reached out to her father or them when they were destitute and arrived many days after he father's death, despite her father having written to him earlier. However, she finds out from Ravi that Rai Sahab received the letter very late, as he was away on business, and left as soon as he read it, without bothering to even carry anything with him. He reminds her how Rai Sahab lived with them for two days wearing the same clothes he came in, pleading with them to come and live with him. Rama realizes that she has misjudged her grandfather. A few days later, Rai Sahab returns to find the children studying with Rama and his son's framed photo hanging in their foyer. At first he is upset, but equally surprised to see his grandchildren studying quietly and greeting him respectfully, something that has not happened before. He finds out that Ravi has had to leave in his absence as he was offered a job in the city. However he is extremely happy at the children's changed behavior and begins playing and laughing with them, thankful to Ravi for having 'introduced' him to his grandchildren. In the city Ravi misses Rama. He received a letter from her and wonders if he should go back and ask Rai Sahab for her hand in marriage. His friend Amit (Vinod Khanna in a cameo) encourages him, and he leaves to meet Rai Sahab. Upon meeting him, he learns that Rai Sahab intends to marry Rama to a family friend's grandson - a wish he could not fulfill with his own son. Dejected, Ravi leaves without meeting the kids and Rama. As he packs and leaves for the railway station, Rai Sahab asks Rama if she met Ravi. Rama is surprised. In a poignant moment, Rai Sahab looks at Rama's face and realizes the truth. He brings her to the station just as the train pulls out with Ravi standing in the doorway. Seeing Rama and Rai Sahab, Ravi jumps out of the moving train and both unite. An ending scene invites audiences to their wedding on Monday 9 April.
