Roddy St. James is a decidedly upper crust pet rat who makes his home in a posh Kensington flat. When a common sewer rat named Sid comes spewing out of the sink and decides to stay, especially as England are playing Germany in the FIFA World Cup final, Roddy schemes to get rid of Sid by luring him into the "jacuzzi", which is actually the toilet bowl. Sid may be an ignorant slob, but being a sewer rat, he knows his plumbing. He plays along and instead pushes Roddy in and flushes him away into the sewer. There, Roddy meets Rita Malone, an enterprising scavenger rat who works the drains in her faithful boat, the Jammy Dodger. Rita does not like Roddy initially, but ends up taking him along as The Toad sends his henchmen, Spike and Whitey, after her because she had stolen back her father's prized ruby a long time ago. The Toad despises all rodents to the point of hateful obsession, blaming rats for his fall from grace (he was once Prince Charles' pet). He decides to have them frozen with liquid nitrogen. However, The Toad's plan fails. Worse, during their escape, Rita takes a unique electrical cable. The cable is required to control the Floodgates. The Toad's evil plan is to open the gates during halftime of the World Cup, drowning the rats and their underground city in sewage. He can then use the depopulated city as a home for millions of his own tadpole offspring. Roddy finds that the ruby is a fake and breaks it in front of Rita, enraging her, for she can now not get the money she needs for her large family. Roddy offers her a real ruby if she takes him back to Kensington. Accepting the offer, the pair first stop to visit her family before setting off. During Roddy's stay, he overhears a conversation that causes him to think that Rita had double-crossed him, so he steals the Jammy Dodger. When Rita catches up to him, he is able to clear up the misunderstanding. The pair evade Spike and Whitey pursuing in a remote-controlled toy boat, with Thimblenose Ted and others on eggbeater jet skis. During this scene, Roddy and Rita share a quick love moment. Incensed at his minions repeated failures, The Toad sends to France for his cousin; an infamous, if somewhat laid back, mercenary known as Le Frog. Le Frog and his subordinates intercept the duo and retrieve the cable, but Roddy and Rita use a plastic bag to lift themselves out of the sewer (snatching away the cable during the ascent) and get Roddy home, though the Jammy Dodger has to be sacrificed. Back home, Roddy pays Rita the promised ruby and an emerald, then proceeds to show her around his house. She at first believes he has family in the home, but noticing his cage, she realizes he's a pet. Roddy tries to pass Sid off as his brother, but Sid and Rita know each other. Rita tries to persuade Roddy to come with her, but he is too proud to admit that he is lonely. By now, they have fallen in love but have not told each other their feelings. She departs, both of them broken-hearted, but is soon captured by The Toad. Talking to Sid about half-time, Roddy pieces together The Toad's plan. He gives Sid his cushy position and has Sid flush him back to the sewers to find Rita and save the city. Together, they defeat The Toad and freeze the wave of sewage generated by the flushing of countless toilets during the FIFA World Cup half-time with liquid nitrogen before it drowns the entire rat population. Rita and Roddy build the Jammy Dodger Mark Two and set off in her with Rita's entire brood. A newspaper article reveals England had lost on penalties. Rita and Roddy become boyfriend and girlfriend. Later while the credits start, Roddy's former owner comes back with a new pet (a cat), which frightens Sid.

Nuclear testing in French Polynesia converts an ordinary lizard into a giant mutant, Godzilla. The creature heads towards NYC destroying ships & drowning fishing fleets along the way. The French secret service interviews the lone surviving fisherman who mumbles the word "Godzilla". Scientist Niko "Nick" Tatopoulous (Matthew Broderick) studies effect of radioactivity in mutations In Chernobyl. Nick studies had shown how the Chernobyl accident changed the DNA of the earthworms in the area and made them 17% larger than they were before. Nick & is asked to help the team in charge of handling the Godzilla phenomenon. Nick then arrives in Panama where Col Hicks (Kevin Dunn) & Elsie (Vicki Lewis), are part of the team. Elsie is from the National Institute of Paleontology. Elsie is Nick's boss for the duration of the assignment. Audrey (Maria Pitillo) is an assistant newscaster in NYC & Nick's old squeeze. She wants a promotion but is not getting one as her boss Charles Caiman (Harry Shearer) keeps stealing all of her good stories and only gives her meaningless research assignments. Nick & team fly to Jamaica & take flesh samples of Godzilla from a boat destroyed by it, which washed up there. Phillipe Roache is French and is in Jamaica and says that he is from the Insurance company. He notices Nick carefully taking samples from the site. Plotting the course of the reptile, Hicks determines that it is headed for the Eastern Seaboard of the USA. Nick theorizes that Godzilla is a hybrid mutated aberration, a fallout from the nuclear tests conducted in French Polynesia. Godzilla arrives in NYC and causes mayhem, but then suddenly disappears somewhere underneath the huge city. Audrey sees Nick arriving in NYC on TV. Lucy (Arabella Field) is Audrey's best friend and Victor (Hank Azaria) is Lucy's husband and also Audrey's cameraman. Victor risks his life and gets Godzilla on film and becomes famous. Hicks arrives at the city and sets up a mobile command center in New Jersey. He asks for a status report, Sgt. O'Neal (Doug Savant) reports that Godzilla has disappeared. A French scientist (posing as an insurance agent) Phillipe Roache (Jean Reno) follows the mayor Ebert (Michael Lerner) & places a microphone on the back of his jacket collar. The mayor then goes to a meeting with Hicks and the crew with Roache and his team listening in. O'Neal and his team figure out that Godzilla is hiding in the tunnels underneath the city. Nick suggests baiting Godzilla out with fish, as that's what is common in every incident with the creature. Godzilla arrives & destroys everything when attacked. The missiles are not able to lock on to Godzilla as it is a cold-blooded creature. Nick takes a blood sample from Godzilla & finds that it is pregnant. Audrey meets Nick when he goes to pick some pregnancy tests & steals secret files & tapes from him. Nick theorizes that Godzilla is in NYC for nesting. Godzilla reproduces asexually. She makes a news report and submits it to her station. But to her horror, Charles steals her report and presents it as her own. Nick realizes that Audrey stole the tapes from him. Nick wants Hicks to help find the nest, but after the airing of Audrey's report, Nick loses all credibility. Nick is fired & Roache picks him up. Victor follows Nick into the French Secret Service mobile HQ. Victor connects with Audrey and informs her about Nick working with the French. Victor convinces Audrey that she should be the one resurrecting Nick's reputation in the world by proving he was right. Roache is part of the French Secret Service, Godzilla was made in the French Polynesia during the nuclear testing. Nick agrees to help Roache find the nest because Hicks doesn't want to find it. Nick helps Roache find Godzilla's nest. Audrey & his cameraman follow Nick into the NYC subway secretly. In NY, Army sets another trap & lures Godzilla & fires. Godzilla dives into the sea where subs attack him & take him down. Nick discovers Godzilla's nest in Madison Square Garden with 200 eggs. The eggs hatch & look for fish to eat & attack the humans. Audrey & cameraman manage to send a TV feed live from the media center of the Madison Square Garden asking the military to attack & destroy the building before the hatch-lings escape. Nick says that each of the hatch-lings is born pregnant and the 200 hatch-lings will convert to 40,000 Godzilla in less than a year. Airforce attacks & destroys the building just after Nick & all move out. Just then Godzilla arrives & is angry. Nick & the survivors get into a cab & run. They lure Godzilla to the Brooklyn bridge & send a message to Air Force to be available to kill Godzilla when it gets tangled in the wires. The plan works and Godzilla is killed. Roache takes all the tapes Audrey made & disappears. One egg survives.

In a Montmartre, Paris café, an Irish woman named Deirdre (Natascha McElhone) meets five men, taking them to a warehouse and briefing them on a mission. The men, Spence (Sean Bean), Larry (Skipp Sudduth), Gregor (Stellan Skarsgård), Vincent (Jean Reno) and Sam (Robert De Niro), are all former Special Forces soldiers or intelligence operatives now working as mercenaries. The team are planning to attack a heavily-armed convoy and steal a suitcase, its contents unknown (a MacGuffin). Following the briefing, the team begins assembling their equipment. Deirdre meets with her handler Seamus (Jonathan Pryce), who reveals that Russian gangsters are bidding for the case and that the team must act quickly to intercept it. The team goes over the plan with Deirdre. Vincent will provide the team with any technology they need, including vehicles with modified engines. Spence is a weapons expert who sets up an exchange for the team. He, Sam, Vincent and Larry meet Spence's contacts under the Pont Alexandre III (Bridge of Alexander III) on the Seine. When Spence talks to the dealers, he's dismayed to find that they brought only half the weaponry he'd ordered. The other half is allegedly in another car on the other side of the bridge. Sam immediately smells a trap but agrees to accompany Spence for protection. As they approach the dealers' shady boss, a fat man in an overcoat, Sam sees a sniper hiding in the rafting of the bridge and shoots him. The rest of the dealers open fire while Spence, Vincent and Sam return it. Larry picks them up after securing the cases and the team roars off at high speed. When they determine they're not being pursued, they pull off the street, allowing Spence to exit the car and vomit. Vincent asks Sam why he took the job and Sam tells him he needs the money. He and Vincent share a knowing smile. Later at the warehouse, Spence is exposed as a fraud when he offers an incompetent plan of attack and is summarily released from the team. Deirdre informs them that they'll capture the case near Nice. The team departs for Nice, where for the next several days they observe the convoy and plan an ambush. During their surveillance, Deirdre and Sam pose as husband and wife and grow somewhat close. Sam observes that security surrounding the man carrying the case is airtight and that he keeps it handcuffed to his wrist at all times. The team engages the convoy and pursues them through the surrounding highways in the country. After a lengthy car chase and gun battle, they successfully obtain the case, but Gregor betrays the team and switches the case with another, identical case that explodes, seriously injuring Larry. Gregor disappears. Gregor attempts to sell the case to the Russians but when his contact pulls a gun, he shoots the Russian contact and kills him. Gregor contacts Mikhi, the leader of the Russians and threatens to sell the case to the Irish unless Mikhi pays a grossly inflated price for it, which Mikhi agrees to. Meanwhile, the rest of the team track Gregor through one of Sam's old CIA contacts and corner him in the Roman arena in Arles, where he is meeting the Russians. A tense standoff and hectic gun fight follows as Deirdre, Sam, and Vincent attempt to capture Gregor while the Russians try to kill them. In the melee that follows, Vincent comes face-to-face with a man he recognizes from a previous job and is nearly shot. The man is distracted by Sam and his bullet ricochets off the stone wall and hits Sam in his abdomen. Vincent shoots and kills the man instantly. Gregor escapes the coliseum. As he runs from the arena, he is intercepted and captured by Seamus, who has already killed Larry. They escape with Deirdre at the wheel just as Sam and Vincent emerge from the coliseum. Vincent takes Sam, who was seriously wounded by the stray bullet during the fight, to his friend Jean-Pierre (Michael Lonsdale) in a villa in rural France. Vincent removes the bullet and allows Sam a day or two to recuperate. Vincent asks Jean-Pierre to help him locate Gregor, Deirdre and Seamus. Meanwhile, in a Paris slum, Seamus learns that Gregor has mailed the case to himself at a post office in Paris. Seamus and Deirdre escort Gregor to the post office where they retrieve the case, and they are ambushed by Vincent and Sam. Sam, feeling a bit of closeness with Deirdre, hesitates when he could have stopped her escape by shooting her; she gets away and picks up Seamus and Gregor. During the high-speed chase that follows, they drive the wrong way against traffic and through the streets and tunnels of Paris. Vincent finally shoots out one of Deirdre's tires. The care crashes and falls over the unfinished end of a highway overpass. Construction workers pull the three from the car shortly before it explodes, but Gregor once again escapes with the case. Vincent and Sam, considering their options, discover that the case is identical to one used by figure skaters. They surmise that Gregor had been working with the Russians all along and that they had made the decoy case for him. They conclude that if they can find the Russians Gregor plans to sell the case to, they'll find Gregor. Intelligence gleaned from Jean-Pierre's contacts also suggest the Russians are involved with figure skater Natacha Kirilova (Katarina Witt), a protégé of Mikhi, who is performing in a show at the local arena that night. Vincent and Sam appear at the arena as Mikhi, already there with Natacha, receives a call from Gregor, who demands to meet in a backstage broadcasting room. At the meeting, Mikhi exchanges money for the case when Gregor, prepared to leave, reveals that he has positioned a sniper somewhere in the arena that will shoot Natacha if Gregor is betrayed before he can leave safely. Mikhi shoots Gregor anyway, and Natacha is also killed by the sniper. Mikhi and his bodyguard leave the arena with both the case and his money, blending in with the panicked crowd fleeing the arena. Vincent and Sam follow the crowd out of the arena in time to see Seamus, disguised as an arena security guard, ambush and shoot Mikhi and his bodyguard before stealing the case. Sam runs ahead of Seamus and finds Deirdre sitting in the getaway car, where he encourages her to leave. He reveals that he is after Seamus, not her and that he'd never actually left the CIA. Deirdre hesitates and asks him to leave with her, but he refuses, and she flees, leaving Seamus. Seamus' exit is blocked by the crowds. Sam and Vincent confront Seamus, but are momentarily distracted by the security guards, and Seamus shoots Vincent. He escapes through the crowd back into the arena building. Sam pursues him. Seamus wounds Sam and is about to kill him when Vincent opens fire from scaffolding above the arena, killing Seamus before collapsing from his own wounds. Some time later a BBC radio broadcast reveals that, as a result of stability resulting from the death of the terrorist Seamus, a peace agreement has been reached between Sinn Féin and the British. Sam and Vincent share a drink in the same Montmartre café from the first scene. Vincent tells Sam that Deirdre will not be returning to the cafe. He asks Sam what was in the case. Sam replies, "I don't remember." They part as friends and Sam drives off with his CIA contact. Vincent disappears up a staircase into the streets of Paris.
