Kishan (Amitabh Bachchan) and Bishan (Amjad Khan) are childhood friends. Kishan is an orphan, but is self-sufficient and hard-working, while Bishan comes from an affluent background. The friendship between the two is extremely strong and is the bane of Bishan's uncle Chacha (Jeevan), who has his eyes on his widowed sister's wealth. It was Bishan's father who had sent his uncle to jail, but before he was released, Bishan's father passed away. Bishan's uncle then approached Bishan's mother and pretends to repent at his actions, and she relents to give him a place in the house. Kishan had objected to this. He had a strong voice and said that Bishan's father last wish was not to let Bishan's uncle back into the house at any cost. Kishan is an orphan himself and grows his own grain on a piece of land. Before dying Bishan's father gave Bishan's responsibility to Kishan. Bishan's uncle thinks the friendship between Bishan and Kishan can come in the way of him having complete sway over his sister's financial affairs. In a bid to separate the two friends, the uncle manipulates his sister into sending Bishan away to the city and then abroad for further education. Kishan was offered by Bishan's mom, but he won't go on someone else's money. He says he still have his father's debt to repay. When the two friends reunite years later, Bishan discovers that Kishan has a great voice. Bishan is now a successful businessman, and he wants to promote Kishan's singing talent. Unknown to Kishan, Bishan had also married in London and had a kid. But Bishan wanted to break this news to him later, as Kishan was bound to be upset that he was not at Bishan's wedding. Kishan goes to the city with his friend (Bishan makes him promise on his birthday). In Bombay, Kishan again meets Bishan's uncle and his mother. He also finds that Bishan has been married to Sheela and also has a child. Sheela explains to Kishan that her father had cancer and would have not survived long, and this is why the wedding had to be performed in haste and without Kishan's presence as getting Kishan to London would have taken so long. Bishan asks Komal (Neetu Singh) who is the daughter of the music academy owner, to groom Kishan to be a performer and a gentleman. Kishan doesn't know that Bishan has paid the music academy Rs 50,000 for Kishan training and grooming. Johnny (Kader Khan) is Bishan's driver. Bishan is the owner of a shipping company and even has his own merchant ship. In the meantime, Bishan discovers that the family wealth has been systematically looted over the last 18 years by the uncle and his son Jagdish. He is forced to borrow by mortgaging his remaining assets in order to ensure that Kishan becomes a successful singer. The Rs 50K check that Bishan had given to the music academy, has bounced. So, Bishan borrows against his house & ship to continue Kishan's training and to pay for the huge stadium where Kishan's first concert will be held. Kishan tries to get expelled from the process by being uncooperative and disruptive. The academy finally has enough and calls Bishan to take Kishan away. Bishan takes Kishan to the stadium that he has booked for his first concert to show him how much he believes in his friend. Kishan now understands the gravity of the situation and vows to work hard to become capable of achieving his friend's dream. Bishan's actions cause a major rift between Bishan and his wife Sheela (Tanuja), who is convinced that Kishan will turn his back on his friend if he were to ever succeed. Due to his theatrics Kishan is about to kicked off the academy but changes his tune when he finds that Bishan has planned a huge launch for him and staked everything on his future. Komal trains him personally. On the night of the debut concert Sheela leaves Bishan and takes away their son. Kishan gets cold feet and can't sing without Bishan on his debut night. Komal tells him she loves him, and Kishan gets his confidence back. Kishan's debut concert is a huge success, and he goes on to donate the proceeds of his earnings and consequent record deals in order to rid his friend Bishan of his many mortgages and in order to help woo his estranged sister-in-law and lovable nephew (Bishan's 10-year-old son) back into the house. Kishan proceeds to become a star and Komal - his trainer professes her love for him. Bishan in the meanwhile falls into a conspiracy further set by his treacherous uncle (Jeevan) and Cousin Jagdish (Ranjeet). He is kidnapped alongside several hostages - primarily children on his shipping vessel, brainwashed, tortured and forced to sign a confession that all the misdeeds have been done by him. Bishan had filed a police complain against his uncle and Jagdish, and as such they were branded as criminals. So, now they wanted to prove that Bishan hijacked his own ship so as to repay his creditors. This was Bishan will be dis-credited, and his uncle and Jagdish would be considered his victims and not oppressors. Bishan loses his mental stability when Jagdish threatens hang little kids unless Bishan signs the confession and goes into shock. Johnny escapes from the Island where the hostages have been kept. Johnny tries to contact Kishan, who tracks Johnny, but Johnny dies in a car accident. Meanwhile Bishan also escapes from the Island. The kids are still kept hostage by Bishan's uncle and Jagdish Bishan is then thrown into an asylum after he has a breakdown and experiences amnesia. Kishan pretends to be mentally ill and admits himself into the asylum by tricking the authorities and saves his friend by reviving his memory successfully by feeding him Rotis as he used to when they were children. Jagdish and uncle ask parents to give ransom money for release of the kids, but they intend to blow up the kids with explosives after the money exchanges hands. Kishan attacks from the front, and Bishan enters the caves from behind to rescue the kids. The movie ends with the children - hostages being saved, the family uniting and the treacherous mastermind Jagdish (Ranjeet) being sent to jail.

It is here that he will learn that Shanta is now married to the wealthiest man in the village, Lakshmipati, who is not only a widower, father of a deceased child, but also much older than Shanta. Lala Balwant Rai, affectionately known as Lalaji, is a big business magnate of Calcutta having business establishments at various places, including the picturesque hill station of Darjeeling and its adjoining areas. His grand daughter Aarti, who is an apple of his eye, studies at Darjeeling. Aarti meets a young villager, Somu, in a train while coming home during vacation, when the latter accidentally enters into the compartment occupied by her and her friends. Finding the boy to be a simpleton, Aarti and her friends make fun of him to their hearts content. . Aarti arrives at home accompanied by her friend Sushma and escorted by her relative Pran who had designs to marry her but whom she actually detests. Lalaji proposes two boys of his choice to Aarti for marriage but she declines to arrive at any decision unless she had met and studied them for herself. Lalaji permits her to do so and Aarti meets the two boys with the help of her cousin Murli, in disguise, and comes to the conclusion that both of them were absolutely unsuitable for her . When Aarti arrives back home after testing there boys she is informed that Lalaji had left for Darjeeling and soon after she receives a news that he has had an heart attack. Aarti rushes to Darjeeling accompanied by Pran, Sushma and the family doctor. And on her arrival over there Lalaji informs her that the cause of his ailment was the shock that he had received form his relatives Gyan, Jeevan, Paro and Lajwanti all of whom were mercilessly trying to swindle him. Lalaji tells her that if she wanted to see him cured she should get married without any further delay and suggests that Pran would not be a bad choice for her. Aarti shivers with the thought of Pran, therefore, speaks hurriedly that she had already selected a boy for herself. Lalaji gets relieved to hear is and asks her to bring the boy to him without a moments delay. Aarti and Susma set out in search of the 'boy. As luck would have it, they meet the same boy, Somu, in a street whom they had met in the train. They beg of him to help them by acting as Aarti's lover, and the latter agrees to do so after finding form his mother that there was nothing wrong in speaking a lie if it was for a good cause. . Aarti presents the boy to Lalaji as a modern young man belonging to a very rich family and Lalaji gets fully convinced about him. But Pran with his wicked intelligence finds out the truth about Somu and gets him exposed on the day of the engagement ceremony and gets his mother so much humiliated that she finally dies of the shock. Aarti now becomes sympathetic towards Somu and declares openly that she could not live without him. Lalaji gets infuriated to hear that but gradually realizes that Somu, though poor, was not a bad boy for her. And to remove the gulf of status between Somu and them, he declares that he would give all his wealth and property to some charitable institutions. The declaration causes a stir in the family and they decide to declare Lalaji as a mentally deranged person and consequently hatch a plot for the same.Pran goes to Lalaji with a loaded revolver. Upon his release, he finds out that Heeralal had not kept his promise to look after his wife and child. Heeralal coaches Reeta on how to go about their vengeance - their target is the only son of Sohanlal - Rajpal (Sanjay Khan); make him fall in love with Reeta; get them married and then extract vengeance from Sohanlal. Jeevanlal lives in a small village in India with his wife, Sita, a son, Dharmchand and daughter, Meena, and makes a living by stealing. One day he steals from the Tehsildar's home, returns to his home and hides the stolen property with his son. When the police arrive, Dharma hands over the stolen articles to them, they arrest Jeevanlal, he is found guilty, and sent to prison. Years later, Dharma has grown up but his dad hates him. Then one day both father and son get into a fight over selling the cow, Jeevanlal strikes his son, and Dharma takes a stick to defend himself. Sita intervenes, scolds Dharma for daring to attack his father, and asks him to leave. Dharma leaves home, goes to Bombay, finds work with a building contractor, earns money and sends his savings to his mother. Then one day Sita receives a letter from Dharma that he is returning home. She goes to the bus-stand to greet him, but is told that he is already gone home. When she reaches home she is shocked to find her husband lying dead in a pool of blood and her son standing over his dead body with a bloodied axe. The police arrest Dharma and he is held for trial. A stage actor becomes entangled in a murder mystery after he marries a woman with a secret past. Kumar is a well-known stage actor in Bombay. While on a trip to scenic Darjeeling, he meets with and falls in love with, Meena, the only daughter of wealthy military contractor, Verma. Shortly thereafter Kumar and Meena get married and return home to Bombay. Four years later Meena's dad passes away after telling her something that he had hidden from her for four years. Then a year later, Kumar notices that Meena does not accompany him to the stage anymore, and excuses herself on the pretext of being ill. Shortly thereafter, Meena gets killed, the Police assign this case of Inspector Ashok who starts his investigation - which will reveal that Meena was meeting secretly with Captain Mahendra; had been married to Captain Rajesh, and has a daughter by the name of Sarika in an orphanage. All Ashok knows is that the primary suspect is a bearded man by the name of S.N. A criminal young man decides to reform himself for a left away widowed woman. But their relationship faces challenges. Circumstances have made Shaka a career criminal. When plague empties a town of its inhabitants, he takes the opportunity to burgle a house. He finds nothing except Shanti, a widowed daughter-in-law who has been left to die by her cruel relatives. Shaka nurses her back to health. When her relatives return they are not pleased to find her alive and even less pleased to discover that someone has tried to rob them. Shanti gets the blame and a beating. Shaka saves her from worse, at the hands of brother-in-law, and the pair flee. They set up home in Shaka's house, much to the displeasure of the respectable neighbours who are all too ready to think the worst. Shanti's relatives are dismayed when a lawyer arrives to announce that Shanti has been left a legacy. They hatch a plot to get her back. Meanwhile, Shaka's rehabilitation is proceeding - much to the chagrin of his former criminal associates. Fire and redemption for some, death and handcuffs for others is what fate has in store. —van Goethem Widowed Shanti lives with her wealthy but parsimonious father-in-law, Jeevan Ram; her mother-in-law, who is cruel and beats her black and blue; and an unmarried brother-in-law, Kalicharan, who would like to have a sexual relationship with her. Unable to move or take care of herself, Shanti knows now that her end is near. Then a thief, Shaaka alias Shakti Singh, breaks into the house, looking for jewelery and cash. When he searches the house from top to bottom and is unable to find anything of value, he hears Shanti coughing, and goes up to her room, hears about her plight, brings the local doctor, Alopinath, ensures that she takes her medication, and when she is able to walk, takes her with him to his house. It is then Shanti finds out that despite his civility, he is feared and hated by the local townspeople - and it is then she realizes that she may have jumped from the proverbial frying pan into the fire as Shaaka is not likely to let go of her anytime soon. Lala Kedarnath Prasanta (Balraj Sahni) has three sons whose birthdays are on the same day. Lala Kedarnath has a Kashmir carpets & dry fruits business and fate has been kind to him that he got rich and earned a lot of respect and fame in society. On the occasion of their birthday celebration, they are visited by a well-known astrologer Pandit Uday Shankar (Badri Prasad), who advises Lala Kedarnath not to be proud for his past achievements and to not be too optimistic about the future as fate (Kismat) plays a key role in life. Lala Kedarnath ignores the prediction and is busy making plans for an even wealthier future. He says that his eldest son will become a barrister, the middle one Ravi will join him at the shop, and the youngest would be an engineer. Later that night as he is proclaiming his grand plans for the future to his wife (Achala Sachdev), there is a sudden earthquake and the whole town crumbles. When Lala Kedarnath regains consciousness, his house has been destroyed and his family is gone. The oldest son, Raju (Raaj Kumar), ends up in an orphanage, while middle son, Ravi, (Sunil Dutt) is found on the road by a rich couple who take him to their home to raise him as their own son. The youngest son, Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) who is still an infant, is with his mother Laxmi (Achla Sachdev). A family friend tells Laxmi that he saw an iron beam fall on Lala, and he might not be alive anymore. Unable to find the rest of the family, Laxmi and Vijay live in poverty. Lala Kedarnath traces Raju to the orphanage but finds that he has run away because the orphanage manager (Jeevan) beat him up. The manager was very corrupt who took the government grants and spent it on his own luxury and comfort rather than provide the basic amenities to the kids. When Raju protested, he was severely disciplined. Frustrated, Kedarnath kills the manager and is jailed. As the police drive away with Kedarnath. Raju grows up as Raja, a sophisticated thief, who works for Chinnoy Seth (Rehman). Raja falls in love with Meena (Sadhana) and decides to give up the life of crime. Once Raja had stolen a necklace that belonged to Meena and then decided to return it to her as a present on her birthday. That day Raja fell I love with Meena. Raja claims that the thief dropped the necklace inside his house while escaping. Chinnoy is livid that Raju returned the necklace to Meena and says that he got Raju from the streets and made him what he is today. Raju refuses to let Chinnoy own his personal life. Ravi is a lawyer now and his father and Meena's father are good friends. Ravi's father had asked Meena's father to arrange for Ravi's internship. Ravi is loved by his foster parents who never told him that he is adopted. He has a sister named Renu. Meanwhile, Vijay has completed his BA but cannot find a job. Renu has been in love with Vijay since their college days together (Vijay is also in love with Renu), but Vijay has not been able to find a suitable job in Delhi despite having a BA degree. Laxmi has been diagnosed with cancer. Vijay takes Laxmi to Bombay for her treatment at the Tata Memorial Hospital. Vijay cannot find any job in Bombay and has no other option but to be a driver employed with Chinnoy Seth. Lala Kedarnath is released from prison after completing his sentence and decides to find his kids. Kedarnath finds from his old friend Hardayal (Hari Shivdasani) that Laxmi is alive and stays in Delhi. When Kedarnath reaches the address, he finds that Laxmi had shifted to Bombay. Renu and her parents also come to Bombay for a vacation. Renu finds Vijay as a driver working for her father's friend Chinnoy Seth, when he comes to visit them. Renu still loves Vijay, but now Vijay is very reserved and knows that the gap between their social status is too huge. Raja continues to pursue Meena, but a vivacious Ravi arrives in her life and sweeps her away. Raja finds that Meena is spending all her time with Ravi. Gradually, Meena and Ravi fall in love with each other. To Raja's dismay he realizes that she however intends to marry Ravi, who is a family friend. On the night before their engagement, Raja decides to kill Ravi only to realize that he is his long-lost brother. However, he cannot tell Ravi about his parentage and in the meantime Meena's parents (father (Manmohan Krishna) and mother (Leela Chitnis)) decide to break off the engagement on discovering that Ravi is of unknown parentage and religion. Heartbroken, Ravi leaves his home after an argument with his foster parent's (father (Surendra Nath) and mother (Sumati Gupte)) daughter Renu (Sharmila Tagore), whom he considers a sister, over the fact that he had objected to her affair with Vijay who is working as a driver for Chinnoy Seth. Raja learns about Ravi's problem and decides to reveal the truth about their relationship at a party organized by Chinnoy Seth. However, Chinnoy Seth's employee Balbir Singh (Madan Puri) drunkenly misbehaves with Meena at the party and Raja manhandles him. Later that night, the drunk Balbir gets into a fight with Chinnoy Seth and in self-defense, Chinnoy Seth ends up stabbing Balbir fatally with his dagger. To cover up his crime, he decides to frame Raja and drags the body to Raja's house, hiding it in his closet. Vijay happens to witness this but is shut up with the promise of money for his mother's treatment. Raja is arrested and asks Ravi to defend him as an advocate, while Vijay initially testifies falsely and then recants his statement after being confronted. Lala Kedarnath also appears in court as the witness who found Raja being caught by the police. Raja is ultimately proved innocent and Chinnoy Seth is convicted after he blurts out the truth in court (as Ravi uses his smarts to prove that Raja could never have attacked Balbir from the angle that Chinnoy proposed and that it was Chinnoy who was in the right position to attack Balbir), thanks to Ravi. Afterward, Laxmi arrives in the court to make sure Vijay did the right thing. Lala Kedarnath sees her in the courtroom and has an emotional reunion with her and Vijay. Raja then overhears Lala Kedarnath narrating his orphanage incident to Laxmi and introduces himself and Ravi as Lala Kedarnath and Laxmi's remaining two sons. The entire family finally reunites. In the end, Lala Kedarnath and the rest of the family build a new home where they, Meena's family, and Renu's family live together.

Beena works as a stage actress and lives a poor lifestyle with her widowed mother. One day while returning home she is molested by Bankhe and two other men, but Rajan comes to her rescue. He escorts her home and soon both of them fall in love with each other. Rajan's dad, Rai Bahadur Gangasaran, is wealthy and does not approve of Beena at all. But when Rajan threatens to leave him, he changes his mind and permits them to get married. After the marriage they settle down to a harmonious life and soon Beena becomes pregnant. One night while driving, Rajan gets a flat tire, he leaves Beena in the car in order to get help. When he returns Beena has disappeared. She returns home the next day, and everyone is relieved to have her back. A few days later they get the news that Gopal, the Manager of the Theatre that Beena used to work with, has been arrested and charged with killing a man named Ratanlal. Gangasaran is on the jury and would like Gopal to get a fair trial. The police find out that a woman was present with Gopal at the night of the murder, but Gopal refuses to divulge her name.
