MI6 sends James Bond (Pierce Brosnan), agent 007, into the field to reconnoiter a terrorist arms bazaar on the Russian border. Despite M's insistence on letting 007 finish his reconnaissance, Royal Navy Admiral Roebuck (Geoffrey Palmer) orders the frigate HMS Chester to fire a Harpoon missile at the bazaar. Bond then discovers two nuclear torpedoes mounted on an L-39 Albatros, and is forced to pilot the L-39 away seconds before the bazaar is destroyed by the missile because the missile is out of range to be aborted. Media baron Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) starts his plans to use an encoder obtained at the bazaar by his henchman, Cyber-terrorist Henry Gupta (Ricky Jay), to provoke war between China and the UK. Meaconing the GPS signal using the encoder, Gupta sends the frigate HMS Devonshire off-course into Chinese-occupied waters in the South China Sea, where Carver's stealth ship, commanded by Mr. Stamper (Götz Otto), ambushes it - sinking it in the process - and steals one of its missiles, while shooting down a Chinese J-11 fighter jet investigating the scene and killing off the Devonshire's survivors with weaponry loaded with Chinese ammunition. The British Minister of Defence (Julian Fellowes) orders Roebuck to deploy the fleet to investigate the sinking of the frigate, and demands retaliation, leaving M only 48 hours to investigate its sinking and avert a war. Q (Desmond Llewelyn), MI6's gadget-master. Miss Moneypenny (Samantha Bond), M's personal secretary. M (Judi Dench) sends Bond to investigate Carver because MI6 became suspicious of him after he releases news articles about the crisis hours before the Vietnamese government had learned of it. Also British station in Singapore picked a signal on the GPS frequencies coming from one of Carver's satellites. Bond travels to Hamburg to seduce Carver's wife, Paris (Teri Hatcher), who is also an ex-girlfriend of Bond's from many years before, to get information that would help him enter Carver's newspaper headquarters. He defeats three of Stamper's men (After Carver orders his men to take Bond away and make him "uncomfortable") and cuts Carver off the air during the inaugural broadcast of his satellite network. Meanwhile, at Bond's hotel room, he and Paris reconcile (Carver had Paris followed. Later Henry tells Carver that Bond is a Gov't agent). The next day, she provides him with the information he needs to infiltrate Carver's newspaper factory to recover the GPS encoder. Carver then discovers the truth about Paris and Bond (Henry shows him a clip of both talking about old times at Carver's party) and orders both of them killed. Bond goes to the newspaper factory and steals the encoder. While he is gone, Carver's assassin Dr. Kaufman (Vincent Schiavelli) kills Paris. After Bond returns to find Paris' body, Kaufman attempts to shoot him. Bond is able to kill Kaufman and escape (in his remote-controlled BMW), protecting the encoder. At a U.S. Air Force base in Okinawa (where he meets Jack Wade (Joe Don Baker), CIA liaison), Bond learns that the encoder had been tampered with (which sent the Devonshire off course into Chinese waters, without knowing it), and goes to the South China Sea to investigate the wreck (which was actually in Vietnamese waters). He and Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh), a Chinese Ministry of State Security agent on the same case, explore the sunken ship and discover one of its cruise missiles missing, but after reaching the surface they are captured by Stamper and taken to the CMGN tower in Saigon. They soon escape (They were handcuffed together. They slide down a Carver poster that ran across the height of the building and then steal a motorcycle and ride it in tandem to get away from Carver's goons) and decide to collaborate on the investigation. The two contact the Royal Navy and the People's Liberation Army Air Force to explain Carver's scheme; Carver plans to destroy the Chinese government with the stolen missile, allowing a Chinese general (on Carver's payroll) to step in and stop the war between Britain and China, both of which have waged a naval war. Once the conflict is over, Carver will be given exclusive broadcasting rights in China for the next century. Finding Carver's stealth ship (They figure the stealth ship was built by the Chinese general, working for Carver and so must be hidden in a port controlled by him), they board it to prevent him from firing the missile at Beijing (as it sails to position itself between the navies of China and Britain). During the attempt, Wai Lin is captured (while planting bombs on Carver's ship), forcing Bond to devise a second plan. Bond captures Gupta to use as his own hostage, but Carver kills Gupta claiming he has "outlived his contract." Bond detonates an explosive that damages the ship, rendering it visible to the Chinese and British navies' radars, and vulnerable to a subsequent Royal Navy attack. While Wai Lin disables the engines, she is recaptured by Stamper. Bond kills Carver with his own sea drill and attempts to destroy the warhead with detonators, but Stamper attacks him, and sends a chained Wai Lin into the water. Bond traps Stamper in the missile firing mechanism and saves Wai Lin as the missile explodes, destroying the ship and killing Stamper. Bond and Wai Lin share a romantic moment in the middle of the wreckage as HMS Bedford searches for them.

In 1986, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) and Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean), MI6 agents 007 and 006, infiltrate a Soviet chemical weapons facility in Arkhangelsk, with Bond performing a bungee jump to gain access to the facility and meet Trevelyan there. Before their infiltration, Trevelyan asks, "For England?" and Bond answers, "For England." Later, Bond witnesses Trevelyan being caught by the facility's commanding officer, Colonel Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov (Gottfried John). Ourumov then orders Bond to surrender. Bond remains behind a trolley of chemicals as he moves. When he emerges again, a soldier who nervously fires at him is shot by Ourumov. Bond walks out to surrender just as Ourumov appears to execute Trevelyan, then Bond releases several cylinders of chemicals. In the middle of the resulting confusion, Bond resets the charge timers from six minutes (as discussed with Alec earlier) to three, leaves the facility and attempts to escape in a plane. The plane is attacked by soldiers, but Bond is able to escape by grabbing one of the soldiers' Cagiva motorbikes, dropping off a cliff in it and re-entering the falling plane. As Bond steers the plane away from the cliffs, the bombs go off and destroy the site. Nine years later, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Bond is undergoing an assessment by Caroline (Serena Gordon), an MI6 psychological and psychiatric evaluation doctor, while driving an Aston Martin DB5 in the hills above Monte Carlo when he is pursued by a woman driving a Ferrari F355. After the chase ends, Bond seduces Caroline. That evening, Bond sees the Ferrari outside the casino in Monte Carlo. Bond enters the casino and ends up playing baccarat against the Ferrari's driver. She wins the first hand against Bond, but after he raises the stakes, the luck turns Bond's way. Bond watches from a distance as the women returns to a boat and takes some pictures of her that he sends back to London. He receives a print-out and a message from M's secretary, Miss Moneypenny (Samantha Bond) after they identify the woman as Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), a Georgian fighter pilot, a member of the Janus crime syndicate and a sadistic lust murderer. Bond is assigned to observe Onatopp and investigate her involvement in a demonstration of the Eurocopter Tiger, a French hi-tech attack helicopter which is invulnerable to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Later that night, Onatopp has a sexual relationship with a Canadian Air Force captain who is piloting the Tiger at the demo. She kills him by crushing his chest between her thighs, and his ID card is taken by Ourumov, who has now risen to the rank of General. On the day of the military demonstration, General Ourumov and Onatopp use the stolen ID card to gain access to the ship where the demo is taking place. They kill another of the Tiger's pilots and take his place. Bond discovers the body of the Canadian Air Force pilot while investigating the boat on which he had seen Onatopp. Realizing their plan, Bond takes a boat to the demonstration but is too late to prevent the Tiger's theft. Returning to London, Bond oversees MI6 staff including Bill Tanner (Michael Kitchen), M's chief of staff, as they monitor a Space Weapons Control facility in Severnaya, Siberia, after the stolen helicopter turns up there. Ourumov and Onatopp attack the facility, where Ourumov aims a weapon in space at the control facility to erase all evidence of his theft of the satellite access controls for a second similar weapon. An EMP blast suddenly hits the site as the first weapon is deployed, destroying the facility and three Russian fighter jets sent to investigate a distress call emanating from the facility, and knocking out all satellite systems in orbit above it. Ourumov and Onatopp use the Tiger, which is unaffected by the EMP blast, to escape. A systems programmer named Boris Grishenko (Alan Cumming) conspires with Ourumov and Onatopp, and he also escapes the facility. In the London MI6 office, the newly appointed female M (Judi Dench's first appearance) assigns Bond to investigate after MI6 determine the blast came from a Soviet-era satellite armed with a nuclear EMP space-based weapon, code-named "GoldenEye." Although Janus is suspected of initiating the attack, Bond thinks that Ourumov has some involvement due to the weapon system requiring high-level military access. After the monitoring signal in London is restored, it picks up one sign of life of which General Ourumov is unaware. Meanwhile, Russian Minister of Defence Dimitri Mishkin (Tchéky Karyo) hauls in Ourumov for questioning over the Severnaya incident. For Bond's investigation, Q (Desmond Llewelyn) provides him with a new BMW Z3 roadster and a pen that when clicked three times will arm a grenade inside it, which can be disarmed if it is clicked three more times. Traveling to Saint Petersburg, Bond is advised by his CIA contact Jack Wade (Joe Don Baker) to meet former KGB agent-turned-gangster Valentin Zukovsky (Robbie Coltrane) and have him arrange a meeting with Janus. Escorted to the meeting by Onatopp, Bond discovers that Janus is led by Trevelyan, who faked his execution at Arkhangelsk and now carries a scar as a result of the attack there, and learns that Trevelyan is seeking revenge for the deaths of his parents, who were Lienz Cossacks, who collaborated with the Axis powers against communists in the Second World War, then surrendered to the British at the end of the war with a promise of citizenship, but were repatriated to the Soviet Union and were tortured and killed for their betrayal of communists. Trevelyan's parents survived the Soviet purge but killed themselves out of shame. Trevelyan has Bond sedated and bound to a chair in the stolen Tiger. When he comes to, he finds that there is a woman with him, Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco). She is the other survivor of the Severnaya attack picked up by the monitors in London, having worked at the facility as a programmer. After escaping from Severnaya, Natalia was able to contact Boris from a computer shop and make plans to meet him, but the place where they agree to meet was where she was similarly sedated before being put in the Tiger by Ourumov, who wants to cover his tracks against Mishkin. Bond activates the Tiger's eject mechanism before the helicopter is destroyed by its own missiles, then he and Natalya are captured by Russian troops and taken before Dimitri Mishkin (Tchéky Karyo) for interrogation. In the heated argument between Bond and Mishkin, Natalya affirms that Ourumov was involved in the use of GoldenEye on Severnaya and Boris also survived the attack and is now working for Janus in operating a second GoldenEye satellite. Before Mishkin can act on the information, Ourumov arrives, kills him and captures Natalya. Bond escapes, commandeers a T-55 tank and uses it to pursue Ourumov and Natalya across St Petersburg. The chase leads to a missile train used by Janus, which Bond is able to derail by firing the tank's gun at the tracks. Bond boards the train and finds Trevelyan, Natalya and General Ourumov. Bond aims his gun at Ourumov, but Trevelyan holds a weapon to Natalya's back and gives Bond the choice between killing Ourumov or saving the girl. Bond tells Ourumov that Trevelyan is a Lienz Cossack, turning Ourumov against Trevelyan. Bond uses the distraction to shoot Ourumov before Trevelyan traps Bond and Natalya inside the train and gives him six minutes to leave it, "the same six minutes you gave me," which Bond understands as code that he actually has only three minutes, referring to what he did at Arkhangelsk. Natalya finds an internet connection on the train and uses a "spike" to track Boris to the jungles of Cuba before the program is terminated. She and Bond then escape from the train using his gadget watch before the bomb destroys it. Bond and Natalya travel to Cuba. In a small plane borrowed from the DEA, while flying over a lake in the area, the pair are shot down. After they crash land, Onatopp rappels down from a chopper and attacks Bond, trying to crush his chest underneath her thighs, but Bond shoots at the chopper, damaging it enough to make it lose control while Onatopp is still attached to the cable she used to rappel down. Her body gets caught between two trees, snapping her spinal column. Bond and Natalya then make their way back towards the lake they flew over earlier, and soon uncover a hidden base beneath it, concealing a satellite dish, and proceed to infiltrate it. Bond is captured while trying to rig explosives to destroy the base, and learns from Trevelyan that he intends to use the second GoldenEye to devastate London to conceal the theft of financial records from the Bank of England, meaning that, as he puts it, "the United Kingdom will re-enter the Stone Age" and "learn the price of betrayal - inflation adjusted for 1945." Natalya uses her credentials to access the satellite's guidance systems and reprogram it to fire its retro rockets, causing the satellite to re-enter the atmosphere, before she is also captured. As Boris attempts to undo Natalya's reprogramming, he nervously clicks many times on a pen that he had confiscated from Bond, which happened to be the one supplied to him by Q. Bond mentally keeps track of all of Boris's clicks in order to work out when the pen's hidden grenade is armed and when it is disarmed. When Boris pauses his clicks at a moment when the grenade is armed, Bond seizes the opportunity to knock the pen out of Boris's hands and into a puddle of chemicals spilled from an earlier fire-fight. When the grenade goes off, it causes a chemical explosion that allows Bond and Natalya to escape. To prevent Boris from regaining control of the satellite, Bond proceeds to sabotage the dish's antennae by jamming its gears with a metal pole. Trevelyan tries to intercept him, and the ensuing fight between the two culminates in Bond dangling Trevelyan below the antennae. Trevelyan asks Bond, "For England?" repeating a line he had used when he was agent 006, but this time, Bond answers, "No, for me" before letting go and watching Trevelyan plummet to the bottom of the dish. By this time, the GoldenEye satellite comes far enough down into the atmosphere for its heat to destroy it. Natalya soon rescues Bond in a commandeered helicopter, moments before the antennae malfunctions and explodes, destroying the base. The debris falls onto Trevelyan and crushes him to death. Boris finally undoes Natalya's reprogramming, albeit too late to save the satellite, but moments after declaring himself invincible, some liquid nitrogen canisters rupture, freezing Boris to death. After landing in what appears to be a safe meadow, the pair prepare to enjoy some solitude together but are interrupted by the arrival of CIA agent Wade and a team of U.S. Marines with helicopters who had been hiding all around the meadow, who escort them to the Guantanamo Bay Naval base.

A recovering gambling addict attempts to reconcile with his family and friends but finds trouble and temptation when caught between feelings for his ex-wife and her dangerous hoodlum boyfriend. Michael Chambers returns home to celebrate his mother's marriage. Michael had been ousted from his home town due to his gambling indiscretions and had left his wife to deal with the mess he created. He now must reassimilate back into the town, renew his relationships with his family and friends (and enemies) and, most of all, seek out his ex-wife to woo her again. In the process, he obtains a job working with his mother's new husband as an armored car driver. He almost seems the perfect prodigal son as he finds his niche back in the community and his way back into his ex's heart. His troubles surmount when he and his wife are caught in the act by her hoodlum boyfriend/fiancé. The film begins with TraviCom employee Charles Travis (Bruce Campbell), the ex-fiance of electronics expert Dr. Karen Ross (Linney), testing a diamond-powered communications laser in a remote part of the Congo situated on a dormant volcano. Charles' friend Jeffrey is excited over discovering the ruins of an ancient city, but when he enters a cave to retrieve his bag, he is killed and mutilated off-screen. Whatever killed him throws his eyeball at Charles and attacks from off-screen. Several minutes after the attack, Karen, who is waiting in the company's Houston headquarters for Charles to communicate via satellite, activates the video feed on his camera. Karen and her team are shocked to see a destroyed camp and several dead bodies. Before they can see much more, a shadowy animal rushes to the camera and knocks it over, ending the transmission. TraviCom CEO R.B. Travis (Baker), Charles' father, reveals that the purpose of exploring the Congo is to find a rare blue diamond expected to only exist at volcanic sites to expand his communication technologies. He orders Karen, who's former CIA, to finish what Charles started, namely, to find the diamonds. She makes him promise that he is sending her there for his son, and not simply for the diamonds. Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Elliott (Dylan Walsh), a young Primatologist at the University of California at Berkeley, and his assistant Richard (Heslov) have devised a way to teach human communication to primates using a gorilla named Amy (voiced by Shayna Fox). With a special backpack and glove, her sign language is translated to a digitized voice. Despite the success, however, Peter is concerned over the fact that Amy is having nightmares and psychological problems that have only been partly quelled by constantly painting the same picture of an eye surrounded by trees. Peter figures out that she is painting a jungle and decides to return her to Africa, but the university is reluctant to fund the expedition. Peter is then approached by a Romanian philanthropist, Herkermer Homolka (Curry), who offers to fund the expedition. Karen, hoping to find Charles, joins Peter and provides additional funding for his trip. Upon arriving in Africa, the group is met by their expert guide, Captain Munro Kelly (Hudson). However, they are soon captured by the local authorities and questioned by a military leader (Delroy Lindo) who grants them passage in exchange for a large bribe. As the group boards another plane, Munro reveals that Homolka has led previous safaris in search of the "Lost City of Zinj", with disastrous results. The group covertly crosses the sealed Zaire border but must parachute into the jungle after their plane is shot down by Zairean soldiers. They make camp in the jungle and Karen sets up equipment to contact TraviCom via satellite. Just as she begins the video feed to Travis in Houston, Peter and Amy, who were rough housing nearby, knock over the equipment abruptly. Travis, thinking this meant a second attack identical to the first, quickly sends in a third team. The next morning, members of a ghost tribe enter the camp, claiming to have seen a dead white man with the TraviCom logo on his clothes. The ghost tribe members lead the team to the man, a member of the original TraviCom expedition, Bob, who is not actually dead but in a catatonic state. As they attempt to revive Bob, he catches a glimpse of Amy and begins to scream uncontrollably, before coughing up blood and dying of shock. Perplexed, the group heads deeper into the jungle by boat, surviving a brutal hippopotamus attack at night. Along the route, they watch as a large cargo plane streaks across the night sky on fire, shot down by the Zaire military and doomed to crash in the jungle. Munro again presses Homolka about his obsession with the lost city, and Homolka reveals that as a young man, he found a book in Soviet Georgia that contained a detailed drawing of the City of Zinj, where King Solomon was believed to have had a vast diamond mine. The drawing featured a peculiar decoration that resembles an open eye, the same eye that Amy has been painting. Homolka comes to the conclusion that Amy has seen Zinj and can take the group there. The group finally discover the lost city of Zinj, while the dormant volcano shows signs of increasing activity. Peter, Karen, Munro, Homolka, and head porter Kahega (Akinnuoye-Agbaje) enter the ruins while Amy, Richard and the remaining porters wait outside. While the first group searches the city, they see that a certain hieroglyphic keeps repeating itself. Suddenly, a hysterical Richard runs into the city, screaming, blood on his face. He collapses dead and a gray gorilla jumps out of the shadows and throws the severed head of a porter at the group, the gorilla is quickly killed while another claws Munro, which is chased off by Kahega. Amy, then appears, clearly frightened. That night, they set up a secure camp, but the gray gorillas attack the perimeter after dark and are driven off by automated machine guns set up by Karen. Homolka translates the repeated hieroglyph: "We are watching you." In the morning, a few of the porters, Amy, and Homolka are missing. The group renter the ruins of Zinj, where the group finds Homolka and Solomon's diamond mine. Homolka picks up handfuls of large diamonds, but the group is quickly ambushed by the gray gorillas, who guard the mine and its precious minerals. Homolka is quickly killed by the gorillas and the others open fire with machine guns. In a small geode within the mine, Karen and Peter find Charles' dead body, a large blue diamond in his hand. Kahega and the other porters run out of ammunition and are killed, as gorillas pull Peter away from Karen and Munro and attack him. However, Amy arrives and fiercely protects the injured Peter from the gray gorillas, giving Karen enough time to load one of the diamonds into her own powerful laser, which she uses as a weapon on the gorillas. The volcano then erupts violently, collapsing the mine into molten lava and giving the three survivors time to escape as the killer gorillas are consumed by the boiling lava. Upon escaping the collapsing city and the erupting volcano, Karen contacts Travis and informs him that she found the diamond mine, but that Charles is dead. However, when she coldly realizes that Travis only values the diamonds, she programs the laser to target Travicom's multi-million-dollar satellite, destroying it in space. Having found the shot-down cargo plane, Karen has Munro find and set up a hot air balloon, something their own expedition had left behind at the airport. Meanwhile, Peter must say goodbye to Amy. She gives him a flower and sets off into the wild with a group of mountain gorillas. At sunset, Peter, Karen, and Munro set off in the hot air balloon. Karen has Peter throw away the only diamond she managed to save from the mine, and the balloon sails away from the jungle, as Amy looks on.

A documentary filmmaker and her fellow Generation X graduates face life after college, looking for work and love in Houston. In this study of Generation X manners, Lelaina Pierce (Winona Ryder), the valedictorian of her college class, camcords her friends in a mock documentary of posteducation life. Troy Dyer (Ethan Hawke) is her best friend, a perpetually unemployed musical slacker. Vickie Miner (Janeane Garofalo) is a manager at the Gap who worries about the results of an A.I.D.S. test, while Sammy Gray (Steve Zahn) has problems grappling with his sexuality. When Lelaina meets Michael Grates (Ben Stiller), an earnest video executive who takes her homemade video to his MTV-like station, she must decide what she values - the materialism of yuppie Michael or the philosophical musings of Troy. —Rick Gregory <rag.apa@email.apa.org>

A Boston defense attorney gets his wealthy client off for murder, then suspects him of killing again. A rising young attorney successfully defends a man accused of murder, only to have the same type of murder then happen again. Right away the previously defended man hires the attorney again, and although the attorney is quite certain that he is the killer, he agrees to again defend him... much to the consternation of his friends. However, he explains that by being his attorney he will be better able to catch the man in a mistake... and on this the rest of the film develops, with the killer playing a cat and mouse game with the attorney until, at last, they both must recognize that they are not all that different. —BOB STEBBINS <stebinsbob@aol.com>

The 00 section of MI6 is chosen for a test to penetrate the radar installation at Gibraltar, with British SAS at full alert to intercept them. Agent 004 is intercepted and killed by an unknown assailant, who leaves with a note "Smiert Spionam." Agent 007, James Bond (Timothy Dalton) pursues and after a lengthy fight inside a jeep, he manages to kill the assailant, when the jeep falls off a cliff and blows up. Bond is assigned to help KGB General Georgi Koskov (Jeroen Krabbé) defect, covering his escape from a concert hall in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. Saunders (Thomas Wheatley) is the section chief whom Koskov contacted for the defection and has planned his escape. During the mission, Bond notices that a KGB sniper is a female cellist from the orchestra. Disobeying his orders from Saunders, to kill the sniper, he shoots the rifle from her hands, then uses the Trans-Siberian Pipeline to smuggle Koskov across the border to the West. Bond knows that the girl was not a professional assassin (she didn't know how to hold a rifle) and also Q can't find any record of her among the KGB. Q (Desmond Llewelyn). M (Robert Brown), the head of MI6 and Bond's superior. Miss Moneypenny (Caroline Bliss), M's secretary. In his post-defection debriefing, Koskov informs MI6 that the KGB's old policy of 'Smiert Spionam," meaning 'Death to Spies," has been revived by General Leonid Pushkin (John Rhys-Davies), the new head of the KGB. Koskov is later abducted from the safe-house (via a KGB agent dressed like a milkman) and assumed to have been taken back to Moscow. Bond is directed to track down Pushkin in Tangier and kill him, to forestall further killings of agents and escalation of tensions between the Soviet Union and the West. Bond agrees to carry out the mission when he learns that the assassin who killed 004 (as depicted in the pre-title sequence) left a note bearing the same message, "Smiert Spionam." MoneyPenny tracks the cello girl in Bratislava and Bond decides to investigate her first. Bond returns to Bratislava to track down the cellist, Kara Milovy (Maryam d'Abo). Bond sees Kara being taken away by Pushkin from the tram. Inside her cello, Bond finds the rifle with two blank bullets. He also finds a note with Kara's address. Bond finds out that Koskov's entire defection was staged, and that Kara is actually Koskov's girlfriend. Bond convinces Kara that he is a friend of Koskov's (and knew about his fake defection) and persuades her to accompany him to Vienna, supposedly to be reunited with him. They escape Bratislava while being pursued by the KGB (Bond evades them in a well stocked car supplied by Q, and then using Kara's cello case as a sled to slide across into Austria), crossing over the border into Austria. Meanwhile, Pushkin meets with an arms dealer, Brad Whitaker (Joe Don Baker), in Tangier, informing him that the KGB is canceling an arms deal previously arranged between Koskov and Whitaker. Whitaker takes himself to be a great general, but Pushkin insults him saying that he was a West Point dropout (for cheating) and had criminal links who financed his first arm deals. Pushkin threatens Whitaker that he knows he and Koskov are working together on something. During his brief tryst with Milovy in Vienna, Bond visits the Prater to meet his MI6 ally, Saunders, who discovers a history of financial dealings between Koskov and Whitaker (It was Whitaker who bought an expensive Stradivarius for Kara from an auction in NYC). As he leaves their meeting, Saunders is killed by Koskov's henchman Necros (Andreas Wisniewski), who again leaves the message "Smiert Spionam." Bond and Kara promptly leave for Tangier, where Bond confronts Pushkin (in the hotel room of Pushkin's mistress, Rubavitch (Virginia Hey), who disavows any knowledge of "Smiert Spionam" and reveals that Koskov is evading arrest for embezzlement of government funds. Pushkin tells Bond to trust him and not Koskov. Bond and Pushkin then join forces, and Bond fakes Pushkin's assassination, inducing Whitaker and Koskov to progress with their scheme. Meanwhile, Kara contacts Koskov, who tells her that Bond is actually a KGB agent, and convinces her to drug him so that he can be captured. That night when Bond returns to Kara, she drugs him as per instructions. Before passing out Bond warns Kara that Koskov wanted her dead, as she knew too much (which is why she was told to hold a rifle during his escape, to ensure that Bond kills her to eliminate the threat to Koskov's defection) Koskov, Necros, Kara, and the captive Bond fly to a Soviet air base in Afghanistan, where Koskov betrays Kara and imprisons her, along with Bond. The pair escape from the Soviet makeshift prison by using Bond's gadgets, and in doing so, free a condemned prisoner, Kamran Shah (Art Malik), leader of the local Mujahideen. Bond and Milovy discover that Koskov is using Soviet funds (converted to diamonds) to buy a massive shipment of opium from the Mujahideen, intending to keep the profits (from sales in the US and Europe) with enough left over to supply the Soviets with their arms (for which Koskov has taken an advance) and buy Western arms from Whitaker. With the Mujahideen's help, Bond plants a bomb aboard the cargo plane carrying the opium, but is spotted and has no choice but to barricade himself in the plane. Meanwhile, the Mujahideen attack the air base on horseback and engage the Soviets in a gun battle. During the battle, Kara drives a jeep into the cargo hold of the plane as Bond takes off, and Necros also leaps aboard at the last second (Koskov is injured as he drives head on into a landing plane on the runway). After a struggle, Bond throws Necros to his death and deactivates the bomb. Bond then notices Shah and his men being pursued by Soviet forces. He re-activates the bomb and drops it out of the plane and onto a bridge, blowing it up and helping Shah and his men escape the Soviets. The plane subsequently crashes, destroying the drugs, while Bond and Kara escape. Bond returns to Tangier to kill Whitaker, infiltrating his estate with the help of his ally Felix Leiter (John Terry), and Pushkin arrests Koskov, ordering him to be executed before sending him back to Moscow. Some time later, Kara is the solo cellist in a Vienna performance. Kamran Shah and his men jostle in during the intermission and are introduced to now-diplomat General Gogol (Walter Gotell) and the Soviets. After her performance, Bond surprises Kara in her dressing room, and they embrace.

Los Angeles Times reporter Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher is writing an article exposing drug trafficking on the beach, where he suspects food vendor Fat Sam (George Wendt) of distributing heroin from his shack. Posing as a homeless addict during his investigation, he is approached by Alan Stanwyk, who mistakenly assumes Fletch is a junkie. Offering Fletch $1,000 just to hear out his proposal, Stanwyk takes him to his luxury mansion in Beverly Hills, where he formally introduces himself and says that he works for Boyd Aviation as the executive vice president. Stanwyk claims to have bone cancer, with only months left to live, and wishes to avoid the pain and suffering. Stanwyk offers $50,000 for Fletch to come to his mansion in a few days time, kill him, and then escape to Rio de Janeiro, staging the murder to appear as the result of a burglary. Fletch is suspicious, but ostensibly agrees to the plan. Along with his colleague Louisa Larry, Fletch begins investigating Stanwyk instead of completing his drug trafficking exposé, much to the dismay of his impatient boss/chief editor Frank Walker. The next day, Fletch endures a rectal exam from Stanwyk's doctor, Dr. Dolan, in a failed attempt to talk Dolan into divulging medical information about Stanwyk. Later that same day, disguised as a doctor, Fletch accesses Stanwyk's file in the hospital's records room and learns Stanwyk lied to him about having cancer. Fletch visits Stanwyk's wife Gail at her tennis club and, pretending to be a friend of her husband's, flirts with her during an impromptu tennis lesson, but does not uncover very much from her and leaves. Next, Fletch poses as an FCC agent while he visits Gail's father, Stanton Boyd, the head of Boyd Aviation to inquire about Stanwyk's finances. Fletch finds that Gail recently converted $3 million of her personal stock in Boyd Aviation into cash for her husband to buy a ranch in Provo, Utah. Fletch returns to his apartment for the day and finds that his ex-wife's lawyer, now-husband Marvin Gillet is waiting for him to collect unpaid alimony. Fletch gives Gillet the $1,000 cash bribe money that Stanwyk gave him earlier to make him leave. After having a cold beer, Fletch goes to sleep and has a dream of being a major league basketball player playing for the Lakers and scoring a hoop. The next day, while undercover at the beach, he discovers one of Fat Sam's customers, Gummy, running away from a patrolling squad car. Fletch tries to intervene when the cops catch Gummy and beat him up, but Fletch gets kicked in the groin by one of the cops and they haul Gummy away in the car. Fletch retaliates by throwing a rock through the car's back windshield, but the car keeps going. A few days later, Fletch travels to Provo, where he breaks into a realtor's office and discovers the deed lists the sale price as only $3,000. He barely escapes from the office while being chased around by a guard dog. Meanwhile, LAPD Chief Jerry Karlin gets wind of Fletch's soon-to-be-published drug article. He sends two thuggish detectives to Fletch's apartment and arrest him after they plant heroin on him. The two take Fletch to meet with Karlin, who tells Fletch he is jeopardizing the lives of undercover cops he's planted on the beach to bust the drug trade. When Fletch insults Karlin, he takes Fletch to an empty jail cell and threatens to shoot Fletch and place a switchblade in his dead hand to claim self-defense. Fletch tells Karlin he is going to work on another story about off-track betting in the Himalayas instead. An amused Karlin then lets Fletch go. Fletch finds out that Karlin had him arrested because of Fletch's boss, who wants Fletch to stop investigating what he considers a ludicrous story about drug-dealing cops. When Fletch confronts his boss about the incident, Frank refuses to believe Fletch's story about Karlin's plan to kill him. Fletch storms off, angry but more determined than ever to break the story. Disguised as a redneck airplane mechanic, Fletch shows up at Stanwyk's plane hangar and learns from two mechanics that Stanwyk has been using the plane each weekend to go to Utah, but uses as much fuel as if he traveled to South America. Back at the tennis club, Fletch meets Gail at her cabana. He treats her to an expensive lunch which he charges to the credit account of a snooty and obnoxious club member, Ted Underhill. Fletch gives her a little information about the investigation but has to flee when Mr. Underhill shows up at Gail's door, demanding the several hundred dollars the lunch had cost. Fletch spies on Stanwyk making a suspicious briefcase exchange with Chief Karlin, but is unable to determine the nature of their relationship. He returns home to find two squad cars in his building's parking garage and flees, managing to avoid capture after a harrowing car chase when Fletch steals an Alfa Romeo from a young car thief. He manages to stay ahead of them and is only able to shake them when he distracts them all at a lodge club dinner. Fletch returns to Provo and, under the guise of an insurance investigator, interviews Stanwyk's parents. Fletch discovers Stanwyk has been secretly married to another woman for eight years, having used Gail for her money. He returns to Beverly Hills and shares what he has found with her, who is very upset about her husband's bigamy. Fletch arrives at Stanwyk's mansion on the night of the plotted murder only to find Stanwyk armed and ready to kill Fletch instead. He reveals he is aware of Stanwyk's real plan to fake his own death by killing Fletch, burning his body, and dressing like Fletch himself. Stanwyk would then escape to Brazil with his other wife, as well as Gail's $3 million. Stanwyk was also using his private jet to smuggle cocaine from South America to supply Karlin, who unexpectedly shows up and, upon learning of Stanwyk's intentions to flee with $800,000 of Karlin's drug money, kills Stanwyk. Karlin then turns the gun on Fletch but is knocked unconscious by Gail with a tennis racket. Some time later, Karlin is indicted for Stanwyk's murder, due to Fletch's investigation. He begins dating Gail and, in the final scene, takes her on a vacation to Rio. Fletch jokes that he had placed the expenses for the vacation on Underhill's credit account and offers the audience the number.
