Plot After the Globe Theatre burns down in 1613 during a performance of Shakespeare's play Henry VIII, William Shakespeare, aged 49, returns home from London to Stratford-upon-Avon to rejoin his wife, Anne Hathaway. Shakespeare and Anne have a distant relationship, as he has spent most of their marriage working in London, and she is a down-to-earth country woman who cannot read or write. Their marriage has never recovered from the death of their son Hamnet, aged 11, of plague in Stratford, while his father was in London. While they also have two daughters, Hamnet was Shakespeare's favorite child, especially because of the poems which he believes the child wrote. Shakespeare now devotes his time to tending to the family garden. In spite of his hard work he is not very successful. The Shakespeares' elder daughter Susanna is married to a doctor named John Hall, who is a prominent Puritan in town. Susanna has to stifle her independence and her own personality to live by her husband's moral codes. She is accused of committing adultery and faces a public trial. Shakespeare terrifies her accuser by claiming that he knows an African actor who was once in love with Susanna and who would kill anyone who ruined her good name. The accuser fails to attend the hearing, as a consequence of which Susanna is acquitted. Anne is impressed by her husband's actions, especially as she knows that he was lying, the African actor was a gentle person who would never harm anyone. Shakespeare's younger daughter, Judith (Hamnet's twin), is outspoken in her doubts about the role of women in Jacobean England. She has not been allowed to have an education or opportunities in life, because it is expected she will marry and provide children. She has refused to marry and is bitter at her father for not loving her as much as her dead brother. One night during an argument, Judith confesses to Shakespeare that it was she who wrote the poems, rather than her brother. They were in Hamnet's handwriting because Judith cannot read or write and dictated them to him. Anne agrees that Hamnet was not especially intelligent; they have hidden this from Shakespeare so he would be able to keep his fond memories. The Shakespeares receive a visit from the Earl of Southampton, Shakespeare's former literary patron, to whom he wrote his 154 sonnets. This upsets Anne; she is aware of rumors that William and Southampton were lovers. While drinking with Southampton, Shakespeare recites his Sonnet 29, expressing his feelings for Southampton and hoping that Southampton felt the same way about him. Southampton cuts off the conversation and seems uncomfortable but as he leaves he also recites Sonnet 29, indicating to Shakespeare that he did have feelings for him. After some time at home, Shakespeare and Anne grow closer and develop a mature relationship. Anne ultimately allows her husband to sleep with her in the family's second-best bed (the best bed is reserved for guests). Having fallen back in love with Anne, Shakespeare amends his will to make sure that she will receive this bed. Now that the truth has been told about the poems, Judith also develops a warmer relationship with her father. She agrees to marry a local man, Thomas Quiney, who has been her suitor for some time. Quiney's reputation is damaged when his former sweetheart gives birth to his illegitimate child and the baby and mother die during labor. Judith becomes pregnant by Quiney, much to Shakespeare's delight. While researching, Shakespeare discovers that there was no notable plague outbreak in 1596, the year that Hamnet died. He becomes suspicious and questions his family. Anne tries to convince him that Hamnet died of plague but Judith confesses the truth. One day as a child, Judith told her brother that she was going to reveal the truth to their father, that Hamnet did not write the poems. That night, Hamnet went missing. He was found in a nearby pond, having drowned, with the copies of the poems in the water with him. Hamnet would never normally enter the pond and so Anne and Judith suspect he committed suicide. The women covered it up, and told everyone that the boy had died of plague. Although it is an emotional revelation, the truth allows Shakespeare to finally come to terms with his son's death and to accept a more honest memory of the boy. In April 1616 Shakespeare's fellow playwright Ben Jonson visits him and they reminisce about their lives. On the 23rd of April, Shakespeare's fifty-second birthday, he is feeling unwell. His wife and daughters gather to present him with a surprise. Susanna has been teaching Anne and Judith how to read and write. Susanna has found the Shakespeares' marriage certificate and Anne finally signs her name, where previously she had only been able to sign with an "X". Shakespeare dies that day. At his funeral, the three women recite the song "Fear No More" from Shakespeare's play Cymbeline. They are now all able to read.

Riddick (Vin Diesel), having remained in hiding for five years after the events of Pitch Black, evades the bounty hunter Toombs (Nick Chinlund). A crew of bounty hunters led by Toombs arrives at the frozen planet U.V. to hunt down Riddick, a notorious wanted fugitive. Riddick kills Roombs' crew and steals his ship, before heading for the planet called Helion Prime, after Toombs reveals that the incredibly high bounty originated there. Once there, Riddick is reunited with Abu "Imam" Al-Walid (Keith David), the man he rescued in Pitch Black, and is asked about his home world, a now devastated planet called Furya, and if there are any of his people still alive, aside from him. Imam and the others are aware that Helion Prime is likely the next planet to be conquered by the Necromongers, an army of religious fanatics who seek to convert every human life and kill those who refuse. Aereon (Judi Dench), an Air Elemental, believes Riddick is a Furyan, a member of a race of warriors long thought extinct. One night, the Necromongers invades Helion Prime, overwhelming their entire defense forces, and takes control of the capital. In the ensuing battle, Imam is killed defending his family and Riddick heads to the capital building. The next day, the Necromongers, led by the high priest (called The Purifier), coerce the populace into converting, except for Riddick, who in a display of defiance kills the man who killed Imam the night before. Intrigued, and alarmed by a sense of Deja Vu, the Lord Marshal (Colm Feore) leader of the Necromonger faith, orders Riddick be examined in the main Necromonger hall by the Quasi-Dead Telepaths. Lord Mardhal possesses unnatural abilities granted to him after visiting the Underverse, the Necromonger Promised Land. He is the subject of a prophecy that foretells of his death at the hands of a Furyan warrior. It is discovered that Riddick is the last Furyan alive, to which the Lord Marshal immediately orders Riddick's death. Riddick escapes the Necromonger ship and allows himself to be captured by Toombs and his new crew. Riddick quietly gets Toombs to take him to Crematoria, a scorching subterranean and harsh prison moon, where the kid from Pitch Black, Jack (Alexa Davalos), was reported to have been sent. Following Riddick's escape, the Lord Marshal sends a commander named Vaako (Karl Urban) a loyal Necromonger Commander who is tasked with hunting down and killing Riddick. This process made easier by Toombs' ship leaving behind an easily traceable path. During the voyage, Vaako's wife Dame Vaako (Thandiwe Newton), after talking to the Elemental Aereon who acted as a seer for the Lord Marshal 30 years prior, reveals that Furya was devastated by the Lord Marshal, after he was informed that a male child from that world would bring about his downfall, thus revealing his desire to see Riddick killed. On Crematoria, a disagreement between Toombs and the prison warden over the amount Toombs is owed for Riddick results in Toombs and his crew staying there for a day. Word about the Necromongers has reached even the isolated prison guards, who suspect that Toombs stole Riddick from them, and that it will bring them only trouble. A firefight breaks out, killing most of the bounty hunters except for Toombs. On Crematoria, Riddick quickly asserts his position in the prison's populace. In the prison, Riddick meets up with Jack, now renamed Kyra, who resents him for abandoning her. After a few fights, they eventually reconcile. The next day, the guards kill all the mercenaries, except Toombs who drops into the prison area, who take all their money and prepare to leave when they realize the Necromongers are coming for Riddick. Overpowering and locking Toombs' in a cell, Riddick escapes the prison and leads several prisoners across Crematoria's volcanic surface to the hangar to steal Toombs' ship. As the prisoners reach the outside of the hangar, they find that Necromonger ships have also landed. A three-way fight breaks out between the Necromongers, the prisoners, and the hangar guards. In the end, all of the guards and prisoners are killed, Riddick is incapacitated by Vaako, and Kyra is captured. As the deadly sunrise approaches, Vaako leaves Riddick to die and departs. However, following an outburst of energy by Riddick, a trait among Furyans, and the approach of the vicious sunrise (0 to 700 degrees F), Vaako leaves Riddick for dead. Kyra, also thinking Riddick is dead, flees with the Necromongers. However, Riddick is saved by the Purifier (Linus Roache), who informs him that if he stays away from the Necromongers, the Lord Marshal will not hunt him. The Purifier then reveals that he too is Furyan, and that Vaako will likely report Riddick as dead, giving him the element of surprise. The Purifier then commits suicide by walking out of the hanger onto the scorching surface of Crematoria after encouraging Riddick to save Kyra and kill the Lord Marshal. Meanwhile, Vaako has reported Riddick as dead, and for which, has been named as the heir apparent by the Lord Marshal. Riddick flies back to Helion Prime. Flying back to Helion Prime on Toombs's ship, Riddick infiltrates the Necromongers' flagship. Riddick, disguised as a Necromonger in full armor, infiltrates the main Necromonger hall. Dame Vaako finds out and encourages her husband to let Riddick strike first, so as to wound the Lord Marshal, paving the way for Vaako to kill him. Taking advantage of the Necromonger's culture, Riddick openly challenges Lord Marshal, who taunts him by revealing Kyra has been converted. Riddick fights Lord Marshal, who keeps the upper hand with his supernatural powers. Riddick attacks him, and when it appears that Riddick has been defeated, Kyra stabs the Lord Marshal in the back with a spear. She is then mortally wounded after being tossed onto, and impaled, on spikes. Vaako attempts to strike the wounded Lord Marshal, who evades the blow. Riddick, who in the fight has figured out the Lord Marshal's weakness, ends up killing the Lord Marshal. After Kyra dies in Riddick's arms, and as Riddick mourns, the Necromongers kneel before him, the new Lord Marshal.

MI6 agent James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) infiltrates a North Korean military base where Colonel Tan-Sun Moon (Will Yun Lee) is trading weapons for African conflict diamonds. The UN has banned trade in these diamonds as they are being used to fund wars. Bond hijacks a helicopter that was supposed to be delivering diamonds to the base in exchange for weaponry. Bond puts C4 explosives inside the diamond case before the helicopter landed. After Moon's right-hand man Zao (Rick Yune) receives notification of Bond's real identity, Moon attempts to kill Bond. Before practically destroying the military base, a hovercraft chase ensues, ending with Moon's craft tumbling over a waterfall. Bond is captured by North Korean soldiers and imprisoned by the Colonel's father, General Moon (Kenneth Tsang). After 14 months of captivity and torture at the hands of the Korean People's Army, Bond is traded for Zao in a prisoner exchange across the Bridge of No Return. He is sedated and taken to meet M (Dame Judi Dench), who informs him that his status as a 00 Agent has been suspended under suspicion of having leaked information under duress to the North Koreans. A top US agent in the North Korean high command had turned up dead during Bond's captivity and a prison communication named Bond as the source, leading MI6 to assume he had cracked. But Bond is convinced that he has been set up by a double agent in the British government. After escaping MI6 custody where he lowers his pulse and simulates a heart attack, he finds himself in Hong Kong, where he learns from Chang (Ho Yi), a Chinese agent and old colleague, that Zao is in Cuba. He asks Chang to get him to settle both their scores with Zao. In Havana, Bond meets with NSA agent Giacinta "Jinx" Johnson (Halle Berry) and follows her to a gene therapy clinic on a nearby island where patients can have their appearances altered through DNA restructuring. Jinx kills Dr. Alvarez (Simón Andreu), the leader of the therapy, while Bond locates Zao inside the clinic and fights him. Zao escapes in a helicopter, leaving behind a pendant which Bond discovers a cache of conflict diamonds bearing the laser signature of the company owned by British billionaire Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens). Bond learns that Graves only appeared a year prior, apparently discovering a vein of diamonds in Iceland leading to his current wealth and celebrity. At Blades Club in London, Bond meets Graves along with his assistant Miranda Frost (Rosamund Pike), who is also an undercover MI6 agent. After a fencing match that escalates into a claymore sword duel, Graves invites Bond to Iceland for a scientific demonstration. M restores Bond's Double-0 status, but warns him that the British Intelligence has other priorities and Q (John Cleese) issues him an Aston Martin V12 Vanquish with active camouflage. At his ice palace in Iceland, Graves unveils a new orbital mirror satellite Icarus, which is able to focus solar energy on a small area and provide year-round sunshine for agriculture. Frost seduces Bond in order to distract him during Jink's capture. Jinx infiltrates Graves's command center and is captured by Graves and Zao. As Zao is about to kill her with a laser weapon, Bond rescues her and discovers that Graves is Colonel Moon, who has used the gene therapy technology to change his appearance and amassed his fortune from conflict diamonds as a cover. Bond confronts Graves, but Frost arrives to reveal herself as the traitor who betrayed him in North Korea, forcing Bond to escape from Graves' facility. Though both Graves and Frost believe they killed Bond, he returns in his armed stealth Vanquish to rescue Jinx, who has been betrayed by Frost in the ice palace. As Graves uses Icarus to melt the ice palace, Zao pursues Bond into the palace using his Jaguar XKR with thermal imaging. Bond kills Zao by causing an ice chandelier to fall onto him and revives Jinx in Graves' hot springs after she has almost drowned. Bond and Jinx pursue Graves and Frost to the Korean peninsula and stow away on Graves' An-124 cargo plane. Graves reveals his identity to his father, and the true purpose of the Icarus satellite: to cut a path through the Korean Demilitarized Zone with concentrated sunlight, allowing North Korean troops to invade South Korea and unite the peninsula. Horrified that it would potentially trigger World War III with the United States, General Moon rejects the plan, but Graves murders him. Bond attempts to shoot Graves, but his aim is deflected by a soldier. His gunshot pierces the fuselage, causing the plane to decompress and descend rapidly. Bond and Graves engage in a fistfight, and Jinx attempts to regain control of the plane. Frost attacks Jinx, forcing her to defend herself in a sword fight. After the plane passes through the Icarus beam and is further damaged, Jinx kills Frost. Graves attempts to escape by parachute, but Bond opens the parachute, pulling Graves out of the plane and into one of its engines, disabling the Icarus beam. Bond and Jinx escape the disintegrating plane in a helicopter from the cargo hold with Graves's stash of diamonds, just achieving ignition before they reach the ground. At MI6 headquarters, Moneypenny (Samantha Bond) is using the agency's virtual reality glasses, while fantasying having a romantic moment with Bond but is interrupted by Q. Bond and Jinx have landed the helicopter near a secluded seaside Buddhist temple. Bond has covered her with handfuls of the confiscated diamonds as they enjoy a romantic evening together.

When Quoyle was a young boy, his father, Guy (John Dunsworth), tossed him into a lake, expecting him to swim naturally. Images of flailing in water and nearly drowning often resurface in Quoyle's memory when he is under stress. Many years later, a 40-year-old Quoyle (Kevin Spacey), works as an ink setter at a small newspaper office in Poughkeepsie, New York. He lives a lonely life. He becomes infatuated with and marries a vivacious local woman named Petal (Cate Blanchett). Petal is an unfaithful wife and a negligent mother to their six-year-old daughter, Bunny (Alyssa, Kaitlyn and Lauren Gainer), whom she leaves on a daily basis with a local babysitter named Grace (Katherine Moennig) to carry on extramarital affairs. Petal runs off with a boyfriend, taking Bunny with her. Soon after, Petal and her boyfriend are killed in a car accident. The police return Bunny to Quoyle, informing him that Petal sold her to a black market adoption operation for $6,000. Shortly before those events, Quoyle's elderly parents commit suicide together. Quoyle's aunt, Agnis Hamm (Judi Dench), arrives to pay her respects to her late brother, though her real motive is to steal Guy's ashes (which she later dumps down an outhouse hole and urinates on). Agnis is moving to the ancestral family home in Newfoundland, Canada, which has been abandoned for 44 years. Agnis agrees to stay a few more days to help Quoyle through his recent turmoil, then persuades him to move to Newfoundland with her. While struggling to build a new life for himself, restore the derelict house, and care for Bunny, Quoyle meets Wavey Prowse (Julianne Moore), a widow whose young son, Harry, has a learning disability. Wavey and Quoyle gradually develop a deepening relationship. Wavey eventually admits she pretends to be widowed, ashamed that her philandering husband left when she was pregnant. Quoyle learns that the ancient Quoyles were pirates that ran ships aground and savagely pillaged them. When those Quoyles were driven out, they moved their house over a frozen lake to its present location, now known as Quoyle's Point. Quoyle's cousin Nolan (Marc Lawrence), an old hermit, reveals that young Agnis was raped and impregnated by her teenage brother Guy (Quoyle's father), resulting in an abortion. Quoyle applies for an ink setter job at the the local newspaper Gammy Bird. Owner and publisher, Jack Buggit (Scott Glenn), instead hires him as a reporter covering auto wrecks and the town's shipping news. With no journalism experience, Quoyle struggles to produce decent articles, incurring managing editor Tert Card's (Pete Postlethwaite) constant scorn. Reporter Billy Pretty (Gordon Pinsent) tutors and encourages Quoyle. When Quoyle's article about a millionaire's vintage yacht docked in town is popular with readers, Jack assigns him a weekly column profiling an interesting boat in port. Meanwhile, Agnis resumes her former occupation as a boat upholsterer to help support the family. She later confides to Quoyle that a woman she loved and had a long-term romance died six years earlier from leukemia. Rather than running his newspaper full time, Jack Buggit commercially fishes to prevent his adult son, Dennis (Jason Behr), who nearly died at sea, from obtaining his own commercial license, which are limited. Jack drowns while securing his boat in an oncoming storm. During the funeral wake at the Buggit house, shock and chaos erupts when Jack miraculously revives from a coma-like state caused by hypothermia. Jack gives Dennis his fishing license, believing the generational curse of Buggits dying at sea has been broken. After Jack's revival, Bunny is upset and angry at Quoyle, believing Petal could also have been "awakened," but she finally accepts her mother's death. Agnis, Quoyle, and Bunny have been living in town during the winter months while their house is renovated. On the night of the big storm, Bunny awakes and can "see" the house at Quoyle's point being blown away. When the family drives to their property, they discover the house is gone, symbolically freeing them from the dark Quoyle legacy.

Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche), an expert chocolate maker, drifts across Europe with her 6-year-old daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). Together, they follow the North wind. In the winter of 1959, they travel to a tranquil French village Lansquenet that closely adheres to tradition, as led by the village mayor, Comte Paul De Reynaud (Alfred Molina). In the village everyone knew their place and what was expected of them. And people kept an eye on each other, just in case they strayed from the expected path. Vianne opens a Chocolate shop just as the villagers begin observing the forty days of Lent, much to the chagrin of Reynaud. Vianne and Anouk stay in the apartment on top of the chocolate shop. Vianne has been to Andalusia, Vienna and Athens in the past among other places. Vianne works very hard to clean the shop, apply a fresh coat of paint, draw murals on it, and to curate her chocolates. Vianne curates her products from a 2000-year-old Mayan recipe. Vianne, who wears more provocative clothing, does not go to church, and has an illegitimate child, does not fit in well with the town's people, but is nevertheless optimistic about her business. Her friendly and alluring nature begins to win the villagers over one by one. Vianne uses a Mayan spinning wheel to determine the personality of her customers and offers them chocolates as per what she thinks they would enjoy and like. Reynaud, who will not admit that his wife has left him, speaks out against Vianne for tempting the people during Lent a time of abstinence and self-denial. Rivet (Michèle Gleizer) is Reynaud's house maid. Vianne offers Yvette (Elisabeth Commelin) a box of chocolates as an aphrodisiac and Yvette tries it on her husband Alphonse (Ron Cook). Alphonse is a lazy man, and an alcoholic. But eating the chocolates arouses the passion in him and they have amazing sex. The next day Yvette buys Vianne's entire supply. Audel (Leslie Caron) is a village widow whose husband died in World War I. Guillaume Blérot (John Wood) carries a long-time yearning for Madame Audel. Françoise "Fuffi" Drou (Hélène Cardona) is a beauty shop proprietor and rents her shop from Reynaud. Renaud bad mouths Vianne all over town, and when Vianne hears of it, she confronts him. Reynaud promises her that she would be out of business by Easter. Vianne tells Anouk the story of Vianne's father Georges (Arnaud Adam) who ran a Pharmacy. In 1927, Georges went to Central America and learned the medicinal properties of chocolate from a Mayan tribe. Mayans believes that Cacao had the power to unlock hidden yearnings and reveal destinies. One of the first to fall under the spell of Vianne and her confections is Armande (Judi Dench), her elderly, eccentric landlady. Armande laments that her cold, devoutly pious daughter Caroline (Carrie-Anne Moss) will not let her see her grandson Luc because she is a "bad influence". Armande says that Caroline has forgot to live life since the death of her husband. Vianne arranges for Luc and his grandmother to see each other in the chocolate shop, where they develop a close bond. Caroline later reveals to Vianne that her mother is a diabetic, though Armande continues to indulge in the chocolate despite her condition. Caroline works for Reynaud as his PA at the office, and Reynaud has a crush on her. Vianne also develops a friendship with a disturbed woman, Josephine (Lena Olin), who is a victim of brutal beatings by her alcoholic husband Serge (Peter Stormare). After a particularly brutal blow to the head, Josephine leaves her husband and moves in with Vianne and Anouk. As she begins to work at the chocolate shop and Vianne teaches her craft, Josephine becomes a self-confident, changed woman. Under the instruction of Reynaud, Serge seemingly changes into a better man, and he asks Josephine to come back to him. Finally happy and fulfilled, Josephine declines. A drunken Serge breaks into the chocolate shop later that night and attempts to attack both women before Josephine, in a moment of empowerment, knocks him out with a skillet. As the rivalry between Vianne and Reynaud worsens, a band of river gypsies camp out on the outskirts of the village. While most of the town objects to their presence, Vianne embraces them, developing a mutual attraction to the gypsy Roux (Johnny Depp). Together they hold a birthday party for Armande with other village members and gypsies on Roux's boat. When Caroline sees Luc, who came out secretly to go to the party, dancing with her mother, she begins to see how rigid she is with her son and that his grandmother's influence in his life may not be a bad thing. Vianne also brings Audel and Blerot together. After the party Vianne, Josephine, and Anouk all sleep on the boats, where Roux and Vianne make love. Late that night, Serge sets the boat where Josephine and Anouk are sleeping on fire. Both escape unharmed, but Vianne's faith in the village is shaken. Also, that night, Luc returns to his grandmother's living room to see that she has finally died from complications of diabetes, devastating both him and his mother. After the fire, Roux packs up and leaves with his group, much to Vianne's sadness. Reynaud initially believes the fire was divine intervention until Serge confesses to starting it, saying he thought it was what Reynaud wanted. Horrified, Reynaud orders him to leave the village and not to come back. With the return of the north wind, Vianne decides that she cannot win against Reynaud or the strict traditions of the town and resolves to move to another place. Anouk, now attached to the town, refuses to go, and during a scuffle, the urn containing Vianne's mother's ashes breaks, scattering them over the floor. While recovering the ashes, Vianne goes into her kitchen to see most of the townspeople, who have come to love her and the way she has changed their lives, making chocolate for a festival Vianne had planned on Easter Sunday. Despite the major change in the town, Reynaud remains staunch in his abstinence from pleasures such as chocolate. On the Saturday evening before Easter, Reynaud sees Caroline, to whom he is attracted, leaving the chocolate shop and is devastated. On the Saturday evening before Easter, he opens the chocolate display and destroys the various confections with a knife. When a small piece of chocolate lands on his lip, he gives into the seduction and devours the chocolate before collapsing into tears and eventually falling asleep. The next day, Vianne promises not to reveal what happened, and a mutual respect between them is established. Reynaud apologizes for his behavior. Père Henri (Hugh O'Conor), the town's young priest, gives a sermon emphasizing the importance of humanity over divinity. The narrator, a grown-up Anouk, reveals that the sermon and festival are a success. Reynaud and Caroline start a relationship half a year later. Josephine takes over Serge's cafe, renaming it Café Armande. The north wind returns, but this time Vianne throws her mother's ashes out into the wind. Anouk concludes the story: Roux returns in the summer to be with Vianne and Anouk.

An orphaned Italian boy is raised amongst a circle of British and American women living in Mussolini's Italy before and during World War II. In 1935 a group of elderly British women, whom the Italians have named the Scorpioni, have chosen Italy, specifically Florence, as a place to live to blend their proper British sensibilities with their love of Italian art and culture. One of those Scorpioni, Mary Walsh (Dame Joan Plowright), works as the English secretary for Paolo Innocente (Massimo Ghini), who, in part because of his own wife's adamant refusal, largely neglects his illegitimate adolescent son, Luca (Baird Wallace), despite Paolo's want for Luca to grow up to be a proper young man, much like the English. Luca has lived in an orphanage since his dressmaker mother's death, death a concept that Luca does not yet understand. As such, he often runs away looking for his mother. On a mutual agreement between Paolo and Mary, Mary becomes Luca's guardian, she who will receive help in raising Luca by her fellow Scorpioni and financial help from Paolo as needed. Associated with the Scorpioni is a brash younger nouveau riche Jewish-American woman named Elsa Morgenthal (Cher), who, because of her affection for Luca's mother to whom she owed money, sets up a trust for Luca's future. Amongst the Scorpioni, Lady Hester Random (Dame Maggie Smith), the widow of the former ambassador to Italy, in particular and Elsa do not get along because of their fundamental outward differences. The life for the Scorpioni changes with the on-set of World War II, more specifically when Italy declares war on Britain and France. Despite all of the Scorpioni taken into custody of sorts by the Italians, they are eventually housed in the comforts of a hotel. Lady Hester wrongly believes it is her association with Mussolini (Claudio Spadaro) that has gotten them into their comfortable surroundings, but which in reality was arranged and paid for by Elsa. Luca, who has just returned to Italy after attending school in Austria, helps Elsa with her efforts to assist those persecuted in Italy. Luca, now a teenager, has fallen in love with Elsa. As such, Luca is jealous of Elsa's professional and personal relationship with Italian lawyer Vittorio Fanfanni (Paolo Seganti). Elsa's own situation becomes more precarious with the United States' entrance into the war, the Nazis' increasing persecution of Jews, and Luca discovering that Fanfanni has ulterior motives in his relationship with Elsa. Through it all, Mary still tries to be the voice of what is right to Luca, who may be tainted by his own immature teenaged thoughts during these difficult times. —Huggo Semi-autobiographical tale from the early life of Writer and Director Franco Zeffirelli looks at the illegitimate son of an Italian businessman. The boy's mother has died, and he is raised by an Englishwoman in pre-World War II Fascist Italy. Living to each other in Florence, and presided over by an ambassador's widow, a group of Englishwomen live a sheltered existence which they believe is guaranteed personal protection in a tea reception given by Il Duce (Claudio Spadaro). However, as war breaks out, the women are interned. Occasionally in this English colony is a wealthy American, who visits amongst her travels and marriages to wealthy older men. She respects the "Scorpioni", as they are known, and secretly arranges for their stay in a hotel. The ambassador's widow finds her vulgar and tries to ignore her, but when the United States enters the war, the American too is taken into custody. Only then does she discover that her Italian lover has tricked her into signing over all of her money and modern art collection to him, and is now arranging her execution. This obliges all to join forces. In Bilbao, MI6 agent James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) meets a Swiss banker to retrieve money for Sir Robert King (David Calder), a British oil tycoon and friend of M (Dame Judi Dench). Bond interrogates the banker as to the identity of someone who killed an MI6 agent (from whom the money was stolen in the first place. The money was paid by King in exchange for a report that King thought identified terrorists trying to destroy his oil pipeline. But the report turns out to be from the Russian nuclear commission, but the banker is killed and Bond forced to escape. Some unknown assassin helps him escape with the money before he can learn. At the MI6 headquarters in London, the money is revealed to be laced with explosives that kills King (explosive is triggered by a lapel on King's coat). Bond chases the assassin by boat on the Thames to the Millennium Dome, where she attempts to escape via hot air balloon. Bond offers her protection in exchange for the name of the real person behind King's murder, but she refuses and blows up the balloon at the cost of her life. Basically Bond delivered the explosives right to King. Bond has a dislocated collar bone due to the incident, a secret which was known to select people in MI6. Bond traces the recovered money to Renard (Robert Carlyle), a former KGB agent turned high-tech terrorist. Years ago, Renard kidnapped Elektra King (Sophie Marceau) in exchange for a massive ransom demand. The ordeal resulted in a failed assassination attempt by MI6 after M advised King not to pay the ransom, and left Renard with a bullet lodged in his brain which renders him impervious to pain as well as slowly killing off his other senses. Before the events of the film, he was spotted operating in some very politically dangerous countries in the world including but most likely not limited to Afghanistan, Moscow, Russia, Bosnia, Iraq, Iran, Beirut, Cambodia and Pyongyang to start funding his anarchist terrorist operation. Renard now seeks revenge on both the King family and MI6 for his death sentence, as the bullet will kill him when it reaches the center of his brain, a KGB agent-turned-terrorist. The amount recovered by Bond was exactly the amount of the ransom demand by Renard for Elektra. M assigns Bond to protect King's daughter, Elektra King; Bond flies to Azerbaijan, where Elektra is overseeing the construction of an oil pipeline. During a tour of the pipeline's proposed route in the mountains, Bond and Elektra are attacked by a hit squad in armed, para-glider-equipped snowmobiles. Q (Desmond Llewelyn): MI6's "quartermaster" (Last appearance). R (John Cleese): Q's assistant and appointed successor. A humorous James Bond refers to him as "R": "If you're Q....does that make him R?" Bill Tanner (Michael Kitchen): M's Chief of Staff. Miss Moneypenny (Samantha Bond): M's secretary. Bond visits Valentin Zukovsky (Robbie Coltrane) at a casino (where Elektra loses $1MM to Zukovsky in a card game) to acquire information about Elektra's attackers from whom Bond had recovered a parachute branded with Russian Atomic Center, Anti-terrorism Unit. After losing, Elektra says "There is no point in living, if you can feel alive." After seducing Electra, Bond discovers that Elektra's head of security, Sasha Davidov (Ulrich Thomsen), is secretly in league with Renard. Bond kills Davidov and boards a plane bound for a Russian ICBM base in Kazakhstan. Posing as a Russian nuclear scientist, Bond meets American nuclear physicist Christmas Jones (Denise Richards). Jones is at the base removing weapons-grade plutonium from bombs and helps defusing them. Bond is taken underground to inspect the work done so far, to certify it. He finds Renard working in the underground chambers. When confronted Renard tells Bond that he spared Bond's life at the banker's office since Bond was delivering the money on Renard's behalf. Renard distracts Bond with the threat of killing Elektra, and utters the same words that Elektra said to Bond at the Casino. Renard escapes when Jones identifies Bond as a fraud and is attacked by the Russian forces protecting the base. Renard also knew exactly where Bond's shoulder was unhealed. Renard removes the GPS locator card and weapons-grade plutonium from a nuclear bomb. Renard steals the bomb and flees, leaving everyone to die. Bond and Jones escape the exploding silo with the locator card. Back in Azerbaijan, Elektra has called M to take charge when Renard strikes her pipeline. Bond discloses to M that Elektra may not be as innocent as she seems. He suggests that Elektra was the insider who switched the pins on her own father, and hands her the locator card as proof of the theft: an alarm sounds, revealing that the stolen bomb from Kazakhstan is attached to an inspection rig heading towards the oil terminal. The inference being Renard is detonating the nuke in Elektra's pipeline at the behest of the Russians, who have three competing pipelines and would be happy to see her's go away. Bond and Jones enter the pipeline to deactivate the bomb, and Jones discovers that half of the plutonium is missing. They both jump clear of the rig and a large section of the pipe is destroyed. Bond and Jones are presumed killed. Back at the command center, Elektra reveals that she killed her father as revenge for using her as bait for Renard. She abducts M, whom she resents for advising her father not to pay the ransom money. Bond accosts Zukovsky at his caviar factory in the Caspian Sea as he wants to know what did Elektra pay him for at the casino, and they are attacked by Elektra's helicopters. Zukovsky's henchman Bull was secretly working for Elektra and alerts her. Zukovsky reveals his arrangement with Elektra was in exchange for the use of a submarine captained by Zukovsky's nephew, Nikolai. The group goes to Istanbul, where Jones realizes that if Renard were to insert the stolen plutonium into the submarine's nuclear reactor, the resulting nuclear meltdown would destroy Istanbul, sabotaging the Russians' oil pipeline in the Bosphorus. Elektra's pipeline is planned to go around Istanbul, dramatically increasing the value of her own oil. Bond gets a signal from the locator card (which he had given to M) from the Maiden's Tower - just before Zukovsky's henchman Bull (Goldie) blows up the command center. Zukovsky is knocked unconscious, and Bond and Jones are captured by Elektra's henchmen. Jones is taken aboard the submarine, which was seized by Renard's men. Bond is taken to the tower, where Elektra tortures him with a garrote device. Elektra reveals that when her father refused to pay ransom, she seduced Renard and turned him to work for her. Zukovsky and his men seize the tower, but Zukovsky is shot by Elektra. The dying Zukovsky uses his cane gun to free Bond. Bond frees M and kills Elektra. Bond dives after the submarine, boards it and frees Jones. He wants to surface the submarine, but Renard attacks and destroys the controls and the submarine sinks instead. The submarine's hull ruptures as it bottoms in the Bosphorus. Bond fights Renard and kills him. Bond and Jones escape from the submarine, leaving the flooded reactor to detonate underwater. Later, Bond and Jones share a romantic evening in Istanbul and end up in bed together which is being monitored by MI6 satellites.

MI6 sends James Bond (Pierce Brosnan), agent 007, into the field to reconnoiter a terrorist arms bazaar on the Russian border. Despite M's insistence on letting 007 finish his reconnaissance, Royal Navy Admiral Roebuck (Geoffrey Palmer) orders the frigate HMS Chester to fire a Harpoon missile at the bazaar. Bond then discovers two nuclear torpedoes mounted on an L-39 Albatros, and is forced to pilot the L-39 away seconds before the bazaar is destroyed by the missile because the missile is out of range to be aborted. Media baron Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) starts his plans to use an encoder obtained at the bazaar by his henchman, Cyber-terrorist Henry Gupta (Ricky Jay), to provoke war between China and the UK. Meaconing the GPS signal using the encoder, Gupta sends the frigate HMS Devonshire off-course into Chinese-occupied waters in the South China Sea, where Carver's stealth ship, commanded by Mr. Stamper (Götz Otto), ambushes it - sinking it in the process - and steals one of its missiles, while shooting down a Chinese J-11 fighter jet investigating the scene and killing off the Devonshire's survivors with weaponry loaded with Chinese ammunition. The British Minister of Defence (Julian Fellowes) orders Roebuck to deploy the fleet to investigate the sinking of the frigate, and demands retaliation, leaving M only 48 hours to investigate its sinking and avert a war. Q (Desmond Llewelyn), MI6's gadget-master. Miss Moneypenny (Samantha Bond), M's personal secretary. M (Judi Dench) sends Bond to investigate Carver because MI6 became suspicious of him after he releases news articles about the crisis hours before the Vietnamese government had learned of it. Also British station in Singapore picked a signal on the GPS frequencies coming from one of Carver's satellites. Bond travels to Hamburg to seduce Carver's wife, Paris (Teri Hatcher), who is also an ex-girlfriend of Bond's from many years before, to get information that would help him enter Carver's newspaper headquarters. He defeats three of Stamper's men (After Carver orders his men to take Bond away and make him "uncomfortable") and cuts Carver off the air during the inaugural broadcast of his satellite network. Meanwhile, at Bond's hotel room, he and Paris reconcile (Carver had Paris followed. Later Henry tells Carver that Bond is a Gov't agent). The next day, she provides him with the information he needs to infiltrate Carver's newspaper factory to recover the GPS encoder. Carver then discovers the truth about Paris and Bond (Henry shows him a clip of both talking about old times at Carver's party) and orders both of them killed. Bond goes to the newspaper factory and steals the encoder. While he is gone, Carver's assassin Dr. Kaufman (Vincent Schiavelli) kills Paris. After Bond returns to find Paris' body, Kaufman attempts to shoot him. Bond is able to kill Kaufman and escape (in his remote-controlled BMW), protecting the encoder. At a U.S. Air Force base in Okinawa (where he meets Jack Wade (Joe Don Baker), CIA liaison), Bond learns that the encoder had been tampered with (which sent the Devonshire off course into Chinese waters, without knowing it), and goes to the South China Sea to investigate the wreck (which was actually in Vietnamese waters). He and Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh), a Chinese Ministry of State Security agent on the same case, explore the sunken ship and discover one of its cruise missiles missing, but after reaching the surface they are captured by Stamper and taken to the CMGN tower in Saigon. They soon escape (They were handcuffed together. They slide down a Carver poster that ran across the height of the building and then steal a motorcycle and ride it in tandem to get away from Carver's goons) and decide to collaborate on the investigation. The two contact the Royal Navy and the People's Liberation Army Air Force to explain Carver's scheme; Carver plans to destroy the Chinese government with the stolen missile, allowing a Chinese general (on Carver's payroll) to step in and stop the war between Britain and China, both of which have waged a naval war. Once the conflict is over, Carver will be given exclusive broadcasting rights in China for the next century. Finding Carver's stealth ship (They figure the stealth ship was built by the Chinese general, working for Carver and so must be hidden in a port controlled by him), they board it to prevent him from firing the missile at Beijing (as it sails to position itself between the navies of China and Britain). During the attempt, Wai Lin is captured (while planting bombs on Carver's ship), forcing Bond to devise a second plan. Bond captures Gupta to use as his own hostage, but Carver kills Gupta claiming he has "outlived his contract." Bond detonates an explosive that damages the ship, rendering it visible to the Chinese and British navies' radars, and vulnerable to a subsequent Royal Navy attack. While Wai Lin disables the engines, she is recaptured by Stamper. Bond kills Carver with his own sea drill and attempts to destroy the warhead with detonators, but Stamper attacks him, and sends a chained Wai Lin into the water. Bond traps Stamper in the missile firing mechanism and saves Wai Lin as the missile explodes, destroying the ship and killing Stamper. Bond and Wai Lin share a romantic moment in the middle of the wreckage as HMS Bedford searches for them.

In 1986, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) and Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean), MI6 agents 007 and 006, infiltrate a Soviet chemical weapons facility in Arkhangelsk, with Bond performing a bungee jump to gain access to the facility and meet Trevelyan there. Before their infiltration, Trevelyan asks, "For England?" and Bond answers, "For England." Later, Bond witnesses Trevelyan being caught by the facility's commanding officer, Colonel Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov (Gottfried John). Ourumov then orders Bond to surrender. Bond remains behind a trolley of chemicals as he moves. When he emerges again, a soldier who nervously fires at him is shot by Ourumov. Bond walks out to surrender just as Ourumov appears to execute Trevelyan, then Bond releases several cylinders of chemicals. In the middle of the resulting confusion, Bond resets the charge timers from six minutes (as discussed with Alec earlier) to three, leaves the facility and attempts to escape in a plane. The plane is attacked by soldiers, but Bond is able to escape by grabbing one of the soldiers' Cagiva motorbikes, dropping off a cliff in it and re-entering the falling plane. As Bond steers the plane away from the cliffs, the bombs go off and destroy the site. Nine years later, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Bond is undergoing an assessment by Caroline (Serena Gordon), an MI6 psychological and psychiatric evaluation doctor, while driving an Aston Martin DB5 in the hills above Monte Carlo when he is pursued by a woman driving a Ferrari F355. After the chase ends, Bond seduces Caroline. That evening, Bond sees the Ferrari outside the casino in Monte Carlo. Bond enters the casino and ends up playing baccarat against the Ferrari's driver. She wins the first hand against Bond, but after he raises the stakes, the luck turns Bond's way. Bond watches from a distance as the women returns to a boat and takes some pictures of her that he sends back to London. He receives a print-out and a message from M's secretary, Miss Moneypenny (Samantha Bond) after they identify the woman as Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), a Georgian fighter pilot, a member of the Janus crime syndicate and a sadistic lust murderer. Bond is assigned to observe Onatopp and investigate her involvement in a demonstration of the Eurocopter Tiger, a French hi-tech attack helicopter which is invulnerable to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Later that night, Onatopp has a sexual relationship with a Canadian Air Force captain who is piloting the Tiger at the demo. She kills him by crushing his chest between her thighs, and his ID card is taken by Ourumov, who has now risen to the rank of General. On the day of the military demonstration, General Ourumov and Onatopp use the stolen ID card to gain access to the ship where the demo is taking place. They kill another of the Tiger's pilots and take his place. Bond discovers the body of the Canadian Air Force pilot while investigating the boat on which he had seen Onatopp. Realizing their plan, Bond takes a boat to the demonstration but is too late to prevent the Tiger's theft. Returning to London, Bond oversees MI6 staff including Bill Tanner (Michael Kitchen), M's chief of staff, as they monitor a Space Weapons Control facility in Severnaya, Siberia, after the stolen helicopter turns up there. Ourumov and Onatopp attack the facility, where Ourumov aims a weapon in space at the control facility to erase all evidence of his theft of the satellite access controls for a second similar weapon. An EMP blast suddenly hits the site as the first weapon is deployed, destroying the facility and three Russian fighter jets sent to investigate a distress call emanating from the facility, and knocking out all satellite systems in orbit above it. Ourumov and Onatopp use the Tiger, which is unaffected by the EMP blast, to escape. A systems programmer named Boris Grishenko (Alan Cumming) conspires with Ourumov and Onatopp, and he also escapes the facility. In the London MI6 office, the newly appointed female M (Judi Dench's first appearance) assigns Bond to investigate after MI6 determine the blast came from a Soviet-era satellite armed with a nuclear EMP space-based weapon, code-named "GoldenEye." Although Janus is suspected of initiating the attack, Bond thinks that Ourumov has some involvement due to the weapon system requiring high-level military access. After the monitoring signal in London is restored, it picks up one sign of life of which General Ourumov is unaware. Meanwhile, Russian Minister of Defence Dimitri Mishkin (Tchéky Karyo) hauls in Ourumov for questioning over the Severnaya incident. For Bond's investigation, Q (Desmond Llewelyn) provides him with a new BMW Z3 roadster and a pen that when clicked three times will arm a grenade inside it, which can be disarmed if it is clicked three more times. Traveling to Saint Petersburg, Bond is advised by his CIA contact Jack Wade (Joe Don Baker) to meet former KGB agent-turned-gangster Valentin Zukovsky (Robbie Coltrane) and have him arrange a meeting with Janus. Escorted to the meeting by Onatopp, Bond discovers that Janus is led by Trevelyan, who faked his execution at Arkhangelsk and now carries a scar as a result of the attack there, and learns that Trevelyan is seeking revenge for the deaths of his parents, who were Lienz Cossacks, who collaborated with the Axis powers against communists in the Second World War, then surrendered to the British at the end of the war with a promise of citizenship, but were repatriated to the Soviet Union and were tortured and killed for their betrayal of communists. Trevelyan's parents survived the Soviet purge but killed themselves out of shame. Trevelyan has Bond sedated and bound to a chair in the stolen Tiger. When he comes to, he finds that there is a woman with him, Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco). She is the other survivor of the Severnaya attack picked up by the monitors in London, having worked at the facility as a programmer. After escaping from Severnaya, Natalia was able to contact Boris from a computer shop and make plans to meet him, but the place where they agree to meet was where she was similarly sedated before being put in the Tiger by Ourumov, who wants to cover his tracks against Mishkin. Bond activates the Tiger's eject mechanism before the helicopter is destroyed by its own missiles, then he and Natalya are captured by Russian troops and taken before Dimitri Mishkin (Tchéky Karyo) for interrogation. In the heated argument between Bond and Mishkin, Natalya affirms that Ourumov was involved in the use of GoldenEye on Severnaya and Boris also survived the attack and is now working for Janus in operating a second GoldenEye satellite. Before Mishkin can act on the information, Ourumov arrives, kills him and captures Natalya. Bond escapes, commandeers a T-55 tank and uses it to pursue Ourumov and Natalya across St Petersburg. The chase leads to a missile train used by Janus, which Bond is able to derail by firing the tank's gun at the tracks. Bond boards the train and finds Trevelyan, Natalya and General Ourumov. Bond aims his gun at Ourumov, but Trevelyan holds a weapon to Natalya's back and gives Bond the choice between killing Ourumov or saving the girl. Bond tells Ourumov that Trevelyan is a Lienz Cossack, turning Ourumov against Trevelyan. Bond uses the distraction to shoot Ourumov before Trevelyan traps Bond and Natalya inside the train and gives him six minutes to leave it, "the same six minutes you gave me," which Bond understands as code that he actually has only three minutes, referring to what he did at Arkhangelsk. Natalya finds an internet connection on the train and uses a "spike" to track Boris to the jungles of Cuba before the program is terminated. She and Bond then escape from the train using his gadget watch before the bomb destroys it. Bond and Natalya travel to Cuba. In a small plane borrowed from the DEA, while flying over a lake in the area, the pair are shot down. After they crash land, Onatopp rappels down from a chopper and attacks Bond, trying to crush his chest underneath her thighs, but Bond shoots at the chopper, damaging it enough to make it lose control while Onatopp is still attached to the cable she used to rappel down. Her body gets caught between two trees, snapping her spinal column. Bond and Natalya then make their way back towards the lake they flew over earlier, and soon uncover a hidden base beneath it, concealing a satellite dish, and proceed to infiltrate it. Bond is captured while trying to rig explosives to destroy the base, and learns from Trevelyan that he intends to use the second GoldenEye to devastate London to conceal the theft of financial records from the Bank of England, meaning that, as he puts it, "the United Kingdom will re-enter the Stone Age" and "learn the price of betrayal - inflation adjusted for 1945." Natalya uses her credentials to access the satellite's guidance systems and reprogram it to fire its retro rockets, causing the satellite to re-enter the atmosphere, before she is also captured. As Boris attempts to undo Natalya's reprogramming, he nervously clicks many times on a pen that he had confiscated from Bond, which happened to be the one supplied to him by Q. Bond mentally keeps track of all of Boris's clicks in order to work out when the pen's hidden grenade is armed and when it is disarmed. When Boris pauses his clicks at a moment when the grenade is armed, Bond seizes the opportunity to knock the pen out of Boris's hands and into a puddle of chemicals spilled from an earlier fire-fight. When the grenade goes off, it causes a chemical explosion that allows Bond and Natalya to escape. To prevent Boris from regaining control of the satellite, Bond proceeds to sabotage the dish's antennae by jamming its gears with a metal pole. Trevelyan tries to intercept him, and the ensuing fight between the two culminates in Bond dangling Trevelyan below the antennae. Trevelyan asks Bond, "For England?" repeating a line he had used when he was agent 006, but this time, Bond answers, "No, for me" before letting go and watching Trevelyan plummet to the bottom of the dish. By this time, the GoldenEye satellite comes far enough down into the atmosphere for its heat to destroy it. Natalya soon rescues Bond in a commandeered helicopter, moments before the antennae malfunctions and explodes, destroying the base. The debris falls onto Trevelyan and crushes him to death. Boris finally undoes Natalya's reprogramming, albeit too late to save the satellite, but moments after declaring himself invincible, some liquid nitrogen canisters rupture, freezing Boris to death. After landing in what appears to be a safe meadow, the pair prepare to enjoy some solitude together but are interrupted by the arrival of CIA agent Wade and a team of U.S. Marines with helicopters who had been hiding all around the meadow, who escort them to the Guantanamo Bay Naval base.

Frank is the efficient and knowledgeable head clerk at Marks & Co., a second-hand bookstore located at 84 Charing Cross Road in London. Unable to find the out-of-print books she wants at New York City bookstores without having to pay an arm and a leg, she writes to Marks & Co. hoping they can fill her order for a reasonable price. Frank and the bookstore staff are able to provide Helene most of what she wants at an acceptable price, including shipping. As such, she provides them with standing orders for more and more books. But as time goes on, their correspondence not only deals with Helene's orders, but what is happening in their lives and in the world around them, including Frank's loving marriage to his wife, Nora (Dame Judi Dench), and their two children. Helene dreams one day of being able to travel to London to meet Frank and the other Marks & Co. staff; the people who have been able to fulfill a great need in her life. —Huggo
