Bill and Jeanie were together 33 years. It was only 60 days from her diagnosis until her death. One night, Bill walks into the bedroom of his teenage son Wes and says he can't do this any more. With little warning, the Blue '71 Mustang is towing a U-Haul trailer along the Pacific Coast headed toward Los Angeles. Paul, headmaster of St. Martin's, a private boys' school, dated Jeanie before Bill but eventually got over it. Bill has been offered a job teaching math. Bill and Wes move into a house and soon visit the school. Wes has to wear a uniform, and there is one in the lost and found. Paul tells Wes the boys all have to choose a sport, so Wes, who wasn't interested in sports, chooses cross country. Wes is the new kid but he soon makes friends. Girls from Cavalcade Academy come to St. Martin's for some classes. One of the girls is the very pretty Lacy, who is not very social. Wes is in French class with her. Ms. Roussel, the teacher, observes that Wes is one of her best students. This is because his mother was fluent. Lacy is failing so Ms. Roussel asks Wes to tutor her. After one of his classes, Bill is asked by Paul to get therapy since the school will cover it. He thinks Bill has been grieving too long and could use help. At home, Wes watches videos of his mother on his phone. One shows Bill and Jeanie having a picnic, and Jeanie has long red hair. The other shows Jeanie with no hair and her head covered, appearing to say goodbye to Wes and saying how much she loves him. Meanwhile, Bill is in the garage looking at a gigantic painting Jeanie did which is very colorful but does not obviously represent anything. Bill gives Wes the Mustang and starts riding a bike left behind at their house. Wes visits Lacy at home. Lacy is not very nice but she is expected to do this, so she lets Wes help her. Bill works on a garden, intending to grow vegetables to be eaten, and he comments on how much Jeanie liked tomatoes. After therapy, Dr. Rollens prescribed Lexapro but Bill doesn't like the way it makes him feel. On a later visit to Lacy, Wes sees blood on Lacy's arm. Lacy makes him leave and Lacy's younger sister Annabelle introduces herself. She is adorable and sarcastic. Coach Keyes is a jerk but he asks Ms. Roussel to go on a date. She pretends she needs to talk to Bill about a student and asks Bill to play along. Raffi and Gober are Wes' closest friends as they run cross country together. However, Wes is very slow and holds them back. He lets them go on ahead. As they return from a run Ms. Roussel asks Wes how Lacy is doing and Wes tries not to give too much information. After class, Ms. Roussel asks Lacy how she is doing and is very persistent, which causes Lacy to start crying, but it is not clear what is wrong. In several later scenes, Wes sees blood again and figures out Lacy is cutting herself. While Wes is at lunch with Raffi and Gober, Mason, who is a jerk, makes disparaging remarks about Lacy that Wes can't ignore. They fight and Paul gives them detention, and they have to spend time on the weekends picking up litter. Ms. Roussel meets Bill at the pharmacy after Dr. Rollens changes him to Cymbalta. They eventually go on several dates. One date is at a restaurant where the waiter speaks French very well and Bill has no idea what the two are saying. During one of his tutoring sessions with Lacy, Wes is invited to eat with the family. Lacy's mother Barbara is proper but critical. Lacy's father Davis is pleasant but thinks he should be treated better because he pays for everything. Wes learns they are separated but still live in the same house. In a later scene Lacy is comforting Annabelle as their parents fight. Paul and his wife Nancy invite Wes and Bill to a birthday party for Bill, and Wes and Bill both bring dates. Wes and Lacy go parking but Lacy doesn't even want to kiss. On a later visit by Wes, Lacy gives him a front passenger seat for the Mustang, since it didn't have one. Wes can't put it in properly because apparently it was a driver's seat, so anyone who sits there faces backwards. Wes, Lacy and Annabelle have a fun time riding before Wes has to join his friends for litter patrol. Annabelle helps make that fun. Mason comes to Lacy's house at night and calls to her. She is depressed enough that she goes out with Mason and his friends, who play loud music and drink in a van. While they are having fun around a fire, Lacy goes off by herself and calls Ms. Roussel to come get her. Mason brags at school about what he and Lacy supposedly did. Wes comes to Lacy's house and says he will no longer tutor her. After Bill and Ms. Roussel end up in bed, Bill feels guilty and breaks up with her. Dr. Rollens recommends a grief support group. After some time has passed, Bill is teaching his class and can't seem to remember anything. Then he passes out. He ends up in the hospital and Dr. Rollens thinks it is time for desperate measures, including electroshock therapy. After treatment, Bill seems to have given up on life. As he and Wes eat a meal, Wes angrily demands he do something. If he's going to just give up and die, do it now. He went through something like this with his mom, so Wes is ready for all of this to be over. Bill seems to be getting better. The movie alternates between Wes participating in a race and Bill going through some possessions in the garage, with flashbacks to when Jeanie was alive. Bill calls Michael and says the museum would be a great place for all of Jeanie's art. Wes is shown passing other runners. He is in first place at the end and Bill is there to congratulate him. Bill returns to teaching and he is willing to date Ms. Roussel again. Lacy passes French without any further help from Wes, who is interested in spending time with her also. Both couples go for ice cream in the Mustang, with the passenger seat still backwards.

Nine years have passed since the events of Before Sunrise, when Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) had met in Vienna. Since then, Jesse has written a novel, This Time, inspired by his time with Celine, and the book has become an American bestseller. To help sales in Europe, Jesse does a book tour. The last stop of the tour is Paris, and Jesse is doing a reading at the bookstore Shakespeare and Company. It is springtime in Paris and the city is in full bloom. Jesse denies that the book is an autobiography of an actual encounter in his life. As Jesse talks with his audience, flashbacks are shown of him and Celine in Vienna. The memories of their night together have clearly remained with him despite nine years having elapsed. Three journalists are present at the bookstore, interviewing Jesse: a romantic (Louise Lemoine Torres) who is convinced the book's main characters meet again, a cynic (Rodolphe Pauly) who is convinced that they don't, and a third one who, despite wanting them to meet again, remains doubtful they actually do. Jesse says what happens next is not really important. He says that it is a good test to check if a person is a romantic, a cynic or a hopeful practical person. As he speaks with his audience his eyes wander to the side, and he can hardly believe it: Celine is smiling at him. Once the presentation is over, the bookstore manager (Vernon Dobtcheff) reminds him he has a plane to catch and must leave for the airport in a little more than an hour, and so just like in Before Sunrise, Celine and Jesse's reunion is constrained by time. Jesse and Celine are forced to make the best of the little time they have together, making it easier for their conversations to become ever more personal, beginning with the usual thirty-something's themes of work and politics and then, with ever increasing passion, approaching their love for each other, just as their time together is running out. Early in their conversation, they broach the subject of why they did not meet as promised six months after their first encounter. Celine wanted to know if Jesse showed up for the meeting, because Celine did not, because her grandmother had suddenly died before the scheduled date of the meeting. The funeral for the grandmother was held on the same day that Jesse and Celine were supposed to meet, December 16th. Because Jesse and Celine had never exchanged addresses, there was no way for them to contact each other, which resulted in their missed connection. Jesse claims that he did not come for the meeting and Celine is relieved as this question had been troubling her for 9 years. But then Celine is angry about why Jesse missed the meeting and says that she would have been there if she could. Jesse admits that he did come for the meeting. He waited in Vienna for a couple of days before leaving for US. He put up signs and posters all over the city with his number, hoping that Celine would see it and eventually get in touch with him. Jesse says that he wrote a fictional version of his novel in which Jesse and Celine did meet in Vienna, made love for 10 days straight, and then as they got to know each other better, they realized that they were very different people and parted ways amicably. Jesse says that it took him 4 years to write the book. Celine felt that her character in the book came across as a bit neurotic but admits that it might be just her own perception. Celine says that she thought Jesse would have forgotten about her. As they talk, each reveal what has happened in their lives since first meeting. Both are now in their early thirties. Jesse, now a writer, is married and has a son. Celine has become an advocate for the environment, lived in America for a time, worked on a water conservation project in India, and has a boyfriend, a photojournalist. Celine says that she studied in NYC for a few years and Jesse is distraught as he had been living in New York since Vienna. She says that she returned to Europe, after a particular incident in NYC. She heard a noise and called 911. The cops came and advised her to get a gun instead for self-protection. Celine tried to complain about the cop, but was buried in paperwork, and she had the fear of being deported, so she completed her masters degree and returned. It becomes clear in the course of their talk that both are dissatisfied to varying degrees with their lives. Jesse reveals that he only stays with his wife out of love for his son. Celine says that she does not see her boyfriend very much because he is so often on assignment. Their conversation as they traverse Paris takes place in various venues, including a cafe, a garden, a Bateau Mouche, and Jesse's hired car for his stay in Paris. Their old feelings for each other are slowly rekindled, even with tension and regret over the missed meeting earlier, as they realize that nothing else in their lives has matched their one prior night together in Vienna. Jesse eventually admits that he wrote the book in the distant hope of meeting Celine again one day. She replies that the book brought back painful memories for her. At one point, in the hired car, during a tense moment when Jesse is confessing his loveless, near sexless marriage, Celine reaches her hand out to touch Jesse but pulls back just as he turns to her. Celine and Jesse arrive at her apartment. Jesse had learned that Celine plays the guitar and persuades her to play a waltz song for him. The waltz (written by Delpy) is revealed through the lyrics to be about their brief encounter. Jesse then plays a Nina Simone CD on the stereo system. Celine dances by herself to the song "Just in Time" as Jesse watches her. As Celine imitates Simone, she playfully imitates Simone's voice and says to Jesse, "Baby ... you are going to miss that plane." As the camera slowly pans in, Jesse smiles while nervously fidgeting with his wedding ring and responds, "I know", as the film ends.

Celine and Jesse meet on the Budapest-Vienna train and find their lives forever changed. They may have only one night, but anything can happen Before Sunrise.

After opening with a brief, seemingly irrelevant scene of a suitcase on an airport carousel, the story quickly focuses on a Paris divorce court where Polish immigrant Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) is pleading with the judge (the same legal proceedings that Juliette Binoche's character Julie briefly stumbled upon in the previous film 'Blue'). Despite his difficulty in understanding French, Karol is made to understand that his French wife Dominique (Julie Delpy) does not love him. The grounds for divorce are humiliating: Karol was unable to consummate the marriage. Along with his wife, he loses his means of support (a beauty salon they jointly owned), his legal residency in France, and the rest of his cash in a series of mishaps, and is soon a beggar living on the streets. He only retains a 2-franc coin that he got as change from the phone while trying to speak with his now ex-wife. In a Paris Métro station, performing songs for spare change, Karol meets and is befriended by another Pole, Mikoaj (Janusz Gajos). While Karol has lost his wife and his property, Mikoaj is married and successful, he offers Karol a job consisting of killing someone who wants to be dead but does not have enough courage to do it himself. Through a hazardous scheme, Mikoaj helps him return to Poland hidden in the suitcase shown at the beginning of the film, which is later stolen by employees at the airport. The airport thieves, eager to find something valuable inside their stolen trunk, are angry when they open it and they find Karol inside. The thieves beat up Karol and leave him behind in a nearby garbage dump. Despite his mishap, Karol returns to working as a hairdresser with his brother (Jerzy Stuhr) whom he now moves in with. After a while, Karol, no longer content to working at his brother's salon, quits his job and sets up to make himself a pot of cash in newly capitalist Poland. Karol takes another job as as a bodyguard in a seemingly innocent cash exchange office. Mikoaj meets Karol in a Warsaw Metro tunnel for the execution of the "suicide", it turns out to be that Mikoaj is the intended victim and asks Karol to kill him. Karol shoots a blank into Mikoaj's chest and asks him if he really wants to go through with it as the next bullet is real. Mikoaj refuses and is able to feel alive again. Using his position as a deceptively foolish bodyguard, Karol spies on his bosses and discovers their scheme to purchase different pieces of land that they knew were going to be targeted by big companies for development and resell for large profits. Karol beats them to it, and then tells his ex-bosses that if they kill him all his estate shall go to the Catholic Church, and they are therefore forced to purchase all the land from him. With the money he gained from this scheme and with the payment from Mikoaj, the two go into business (of a vaguely defined but possibly illegal nature) together. Karol becomes ruthlessly ambitious, focusing his energies on money-making schemes while learning to speak French and brooding over his wife's abandonment. He uses his new financial influence in a world where, as several characters observe, "you can buy anything" to execute a complex scheme to first win back Dominique, and then destroy her life. Karol takes his revenge against his ex-wife by faking his own death after which she shows up for his funeral. Karol then sneaks into her hotel room and has sex with her to prove his potency again. Then afterwords, Dominique is arrested and imprisoned for his 'murder'. The final image of the film shows Karol secretly visiting his wife in prison and staring at Dominique through the window of her prison cell. Karol then suddenly feels ashamed at himself for this revenge plot against his wife and openly cries... realizing that he must finally let go of her in order to move on with his own life.

Julie, wife of the famous composer Patrice de Courcy, must cope with the sudden death of her husband and daughter in an automobile accident she herself survives. While recovering in the hospital, Julie attempts suicide by overdose, but cannot swallow the pills. After being released from the hospital, Julie closes up the house she lived in with her family and takes an apartment in Paris without telling anyone, or keeping any clothing or objects from her old life, except for a chandelier of blue beads that presumably belonged to her daughter. For the remainder of the film, Julie disassociates herself from all past memories and distances herself from former friendships, as can be derived from a conversation she has with her mother who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and believes Julie is her own sister Marie-France. She also destroys the score for her late husband's last commissioned, though unfinished, work: a piece celebrating European unity, following the end of the cold war. Snatches of the music haunt her throughout the film. Julie reluctantly befriends Lucille, an exotic dancer who is having an affair with one of the neighbors and helps her when she needs moral support when the tennants in their apartment building want to evit her . Despite her desire to live anonymously and alone, life in Paris forces Julie to confront elements of her past that she would rather not face, including Olivier, a friend of the couple, also a composer and former assistant of Patrice's at the conservatory, who is in love with her, and the fact that she is suspected to be the true author of her late husband's music. Olivier appears in a TV interview announcing that he shall try to complete Patrice's commission, and Julie also discovers that her late husband was having an affair with a younger woman. While both trying to stop Olivier from completing the score and finding out who her husband's mistress was, Julie becomes more engaged despite her own efforts not to be. She tracks down Sandrine, Patrice's mistress, and finds out that she is carrying his child. Julie arranges for her to have her husband's house and recognition of his paternity for the child. This provokes her to begin a relationship with Olivier, and to resurrect her late husband's last composition, which has been changing according to her notes on Olivier's work. Olivier decides not to incorporate the changes suggested by Julie, stating that this piece is now his music and has ceased to be Patrice's. He says that she must either accept his composition with all its roughness or she must allow people to know the truth about her composition. She agrees on the grounds that the truth about her husband's music would not be revealed as her own work. In the final sequence, Julie and Olivier are having sex while the Unity of Europe piece is played (which features chorus and a solo soprano singing Saint Paul's 1 Corinthians 13 epistole in Greek), and images are seen of all the people Julie has affected by her actions as she faintly smiles through her tears.
