Raj/Raju (Salman Khan) is an orphan, brought up by Mrs Godhinho, who teaches Raj music in Goa. When Raj grows up, he comes to Mumbai as a professional singer trying to make his way in the big city. Raj believes that Mumbai is the city where he will meet the girl of his dreams and make good in his singing career. Raj stays with his friend Abdul (Neeraj Vora). Abdul says that Mumbai is a city of pretenses and asks Raj to get a bike. Raj buys a bike on EMI by giving postdated checks, even though he has no money in the bank. Abdul introduces Raj to a music producer Mishra (Asrani). Raj sings a song for Mishra, and he is super impressed. Mishra wants Raj to record his songs in a cassette, which will cost Rs 2 Lakhs. Abdul goes to his miser uncle (Shakti Kapoor), who runs a roadside cafe. The uncle runs a juice machine in his cafe and eats the remainder of the fruit after the juice is taken out, so that there is no wastage. Raj and Abdul sell a bus stop, by making it like a shop, to the uncle and defraud him of Rs 2 Lakhs, to fund Raj's cassette. Raj uses the money and records the cassette, but when they go back to the music company, they find that Mishra had died. Raj and Abdul meet Mishra's boss and the owner of the gramophone company Mahesh Hirwani (Satish Shah) at Mishra's funeral. But Mahesh throws them out. Soon, Abdul's uncle figures out that he has been defrauded (when the municipality arrives with a bulldozer and removes the bus station where uncle had set up a juice shop) and goes mad. Raj is distraught that his dream is now in tatters. Raj rescues a young woman whose car has an accident and has fallen on the train tracks. Raj risks his own life to pull the woman out of the car, before an oncoming train crushes it. The woman was in wedding attire of a bride. He rushes to the hospital & stays with her. It is assumed by the hospital staff that Raj is the woman's husband. The attending doctor recognizes the woman as Pooja, the daughter of his friend. Pooja Oberoi (Rani Mukerji), the daughter of a wealthy family, survives but falls into a coma. She can listen and understand everything, but she can't speak or move. Her family Bharat Oberoi (Rajeev Verma) Pooja's father, Biji (Kamini Kaushal) and Bharat's trusted employee Govardhan (Paresh Rawal), and son of Pooja's Bua Monty (Vinay Pathak) rushes to the hospital. Finding Raj there, assumes that he is Pooja's husband Romi, with whom she had eloped with to marry and whom they had never met. The family was against Pooja marrying Romi and this was the reason that Pooja was driving away in stress (to run away with Romi) and met with an accident. The family is told that pretend Romi risked his life on the train tracks to save Pooja, and they indebted to him. When Raj is alone with Pooja, he tells her that he is leaving as he is not Romi. Govardhan hears this and now knows the truth about Raju not being Romi but begs Raju to stay for the sake of the family. Since Pooja's father has a higher chance of a heart attack, Raj agrees to lie and says he is Romi. Mahesh also finds that Romi (Real Raju) is the son-in-law of Oberoi and his whole attitude changes towards the pretend Romi. From the beginning pretend Romi talks to Pooja and tells her the truth. He returns her jewels that he found in her bag in the car. Pretend Romi confides in Govardhan that he will reveal the truth once his cassette is recorded by Mahesh. Govardhan agrees as he knows that Raju/pretend Romi is a good man by heart. As the family gets to know the pretend Romi, Pooja's best friend & Govardhan's daughter, Jahnvi (Preity Zinta) starts spending a lot of time with him. Raju rejects all material comforts offered by the family and wants to be his own man. Jahnvi is impressed with pretend Romi with each passing day. They pray at a temple together for Pooja's speedy recovery. Jahnvi finds pretend Romi talking to Pooja and figures out the truth. Her respect for Raj grows as she realizes that Raj is only helping Pooja out of the goodness of his heart. Raj and Jahnvi both fall in love with each other, who is regarded as a second daughter by Pooja's family. Pooja's Dance master (Razak Khan) had seen Raju at Mishra's recording studio and finds him at the Oberoi house, as Romi. But he has short term memory loss and doesn't remember Raju. Raj records his album with Mahesh. Then Pooja revives from her coma and complicates matters by falling for Raj. Raj and Jahnvi continue their affair, while hiding it from the family. Pooja has also identified Raj as Romi, to keep up the charade and keep the family feelings intact. Govardhan knows about Raj and Jahnvi and agrees to keep it a secret. When all is going well, Abdul's uncle arrives and accuses Raju of cheating the entire family. But Pooja stands up for Raju and says that as Romi, he could have done incalculable damage to her and the family but did nothing of the sort. He is a good guy. The family accepts Raju. In a conversation, Pooja and Jahnvi both reveal that they both love Raj using signs (Hand up) but Jahnvi realizes that Pooja loves Raj resulting in her putting her hand down. Raj and Jahnvi put their relationship to an end. On the day of their engagement, Jahnvi unknowingly takes Pooja's cell phone (Her and Pooja's cellphone look the same). Knowing that Raj will never marry Pooja if she's there, she decides to leave. When Jahnvi cell's phone rings, Pooja picks it up and it ends up being Abdul who pleads Jahnvi to break this wedding and come back to Raj. Pooja then reveals to everyone about Raj and Jahnvi and Raj and Jahnvi are once reunited. Pooja chooses Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan). Rahul comes to marry Pooja.

Kapil's brother dies from drugs, prompting him to join police. His friend Albert is killed in Goa. Kapil travels there, faces local police opposition. He goes rogue, evading authorities and goons, to uncover truth behind Albert's death. Kapil's (Naseeruddin Shah) younger brother, Buntu, dies as a result of a drug overdose. Kapil vows to put an end to drugs and drug-dealers, by joining the police. He soon attains the title of C.I.D. Inspector. He lives in Bombay with his mom (Kamini Kaushal). One day his friend from Goa, Albert Pinto (Pankaj Kapoor) is killed in front of him. He vows to avenge his death, but the local police will not permit to do so, and they assign this incident to another inspector. Frustrated, Kapil decides to travel to Goa. Once in Goa, he finds out that he has no powers as a policeman, and the Goa police regard him as a nuisance. He attempts to uncover Albert's death, with the help of Jojo (Archana Puran Singh), but instead gets into brawls, is arrested, and is escorted by the local police, back to Bombay. He then seeks help with one of Albert's acquaintance, Jyoti alias Jojo but the Goa police do not allow him to exercise his rights as a police and thus when his investigations starts to show progress he is disregard and is taken back to Bombay. A police officer framed for drug possession escapes jail while his wife is institutionalized. Inspector Shiv Nath is a honest and diligent police officer in Bombay, and lives with his wife, Radha, and a young son, Arjun. While making several arrests in connection with counterfeit money and drugs, he comes to know that his close friend, Karamchand is also involved in this racket. Before he could take any action, he himself is arrested by the police for possession of fake money and drugs, and sentenced to a jail term, but he escapes and his whereabouts are unknown. Radha loses her mind and is institutionalized, while Arjun takes to petty crime and on reaching adult-hood is the Don of the area known and feared as "Dus Numbri". He meets with and falls in love with a petty thief and card-sharp, Rosemary Fernandes. When Radha accidentally meets with Rosemary, she thinks it is Sundari, Karamchand's wife, and then Radha starts to regain her sanity. Ram, raised by his widowed mother, rejects marriage. She transfers the family estate to cousin Rakesh, who's fallen for Ram's intended bride Aarti, unleashing a web of deceit. Renukadevi is widowed and the mother of a son named Ram. Her husband had indulged in all possible vices, and passed away unexpectedly. Her father-in-law, Rai, does not want Ram to repeat his father's mistakes, and teaches him all the positive values of the Hindu religion, in particular the contents of the Holy Book "Geeta". As a result, Ram refrains from all known vices, is an expert in yogic exercises, decides to live the life of a celibate, and refuses to marry anyone. When Rai passes away, Renuka asks Ram to fulfill his grandfather's last wishes, one of which was to get married. She even arranges his introduction to Aarti, an attractive young woman. But Ram is convinced that marriage is not for him. Renuka is overjoyed when her estranged brother, Gopinath, and his son, Rakesh, return from abroad. With their help she hopes to get Ram marries with Aarti. Then things get complicated when Rakesh falls in love with Aarti. Ram leaves town to attend to business, and circumstances propel Renuka to will her entire estate to Rakesh and change his name to Bharat, with the blessings of a renowned saint named Ishwar Baba. After this ceremony, the people around Renuka start showing their true colors, and after an open-palmed stinging slap from Aarti, Renuka realizes that her place in this house is now worse than that of a lowly servant. Bharat is a graduate, but is unable to secure any employment, much to the frustration of his girlfriend, Sheetal. Vijay takes step to secure his own future, by turning to crime, which is strongly opposed by Bharat, and as a result Vijay leaves the house. Mohan is Sheetal's boss, and finds her very attractive. When he proposes marriage, she accepts, and soon both are engaged. When he goes to Britain to pursue his education, he realizes the huge culture gap that exists between the Indians living there with some of them even being ashamed of acknowledging their roots. When he falls in love with Prithi, a girl with the same NRI mindset, he takes it upon himself to change the way she looks at India.

Navendu toils hard to support his joint family and keep it together. However, their bond gets threatened when his younger brother marries a woman who insists on living separately.

Rajesh Sharma, working with the Indian Government on a top secret research project, has to deal with enemy agents, explosions, murder and last but not least a dangerous look-alike. Police officer Rajesh is an expert in explosives and chemicals. He lives with his dog and his cook, and has a love interest in Rita. The department in which Rajesh works discovers that people are interested in stealing information about explosives from them, and start to guard against such an attack, but Rajesh is kidnapped and taken abroad. The kidnappers keep Rajesh imprisoned and send a look-alike, Jackoss, back to India to deceive the department. Jackoss is a non-Indian with blue eyes and a voice different from Rajesh's. To deceive Rajesh's department, he uses contact lenses and tells them that he lost his voice in the kidnapping. Rita believes him and accepts him as Rajesh, although she has some misgivings. Rajesh's dog and cook realise what has happened, so Jackoss kills them so they can't expose him. The authorities are also less trusting and do not allow Jackoss to enter the high-security zone until some other criminals help Jackoss to convince the authorities of his identity. Meanwhile Rajesh escapes and makes his way back to India. Jackoss had plans to blow up a laboratory, but Rajesh reaches it on time and foils his plan. Neither are aware that Neelima's employer, Pushpa, would prefer that she marry her London-based widower Civil Engineer brother, Anand, so that she could look after his child, Munni. Badal, a clown villager and Kammo are childhood neighbors and grown up playing with each other. They never knew when they fell in love while growing up. They want to marry but Kammo's father is against this marriage as Badal is doing nothing for living. Kammo asks Badal to go to city to work and earn. While Badal is leaving in the late night a sick & old relative arrives. Badal asks him to rest in his room and to inform his family members about his migration in the morning. The room catches fire because of ignorance of the old man and he is charred to death but Badal's family, Kammo and all villagers take Badal as dead as they do not know the truth. Badal joins Indian army and returns after few years/months only to find that Kammo is married to wealthy Thakur. Rather than leaving Kammo on her own, he decides to take revenge, befriends Thakur, pretends loving Thakur's sister and stays around Kammo.
