Anirudh, a blind man who runs a school, falls in love with Kavita, a widowed social worker. But when a marriage is proposed, Anirudh falls prey to his own inferiority complex.

This film is about the blind, in particular about the lives and feelings of blind children and the principal of their school. Sparsh refers to the sensation and feeling of touch upon which blind people rely in the absence of sight. The story opens with Anirudh Parmar (Naseeruddin Shah) as the principal of Navjivan Andhvidyalay, a school for the blind that educates about 200 blind children. Jagdish (Mohan Gokhale) is Anirudh's assistant at home & office. Anirudh has a dark and lonely existence for the most part. He is fiercely independent and even doesn't allow Jagdish to do all his chores. One day, while on his way to the doctor, he hears a lovely song and ends up mesmerized at the singer's door instead of the doctor that he was looking for. The voice belongs to Kavita Prasad (Shabana Azmi), a young woman recently widowed after three years of marriage. Kavita, too, prefers a secluded existence. Her childhood friend Manju (Sudha Chopra), is the only friend she has. Manju throws a small party where Kavita and Anirudh meet again. He recognizes her from her voice. During the conversation, he mentions that the school is looking for volunteers to read, sing, teach handicrafts and spend time with the children. Kavita is reluctant, but she is urged by Manju and her husband Suresh to strongly consider it. Manju takes Kavita to the school when it holds a stall for Diwali candles made by students. Kavita sees that the students are talented and run the entire stall by themselves, without any help. They make beautiful candles. Kavita decides to volunteer. On day one Anirudh warns Kavita not to see blind kids as "poor souls".. he says the kids need help and not charity. Kavita takes some time to adjust to the sightless lives of the kids and to adjust to their sensitivities. As Kavita spends more time at the school, she begins forming a friendship with Anirudh. The friendship grows stronger over time. But their personalities and feelings are different. Anirudh is of strong character. He firmly believes that the blind need help but not pity or charity. (When once, in his office, Kavita attempts to assist him with coffee, he gets enraged at the thought of his guest offering to overcome his obvious difficulty with hospitality.) Kavita helps the kids start playing blind cricket, using a special ball that makes rattles. The school prepares for their annual function and Kavita helps the student prepare a skit based on the Mahabharata. Kavita reveals to Anirudh that her husband died 3 yrs ago. The kids also love Kavita and get very close to her. A student names Paplu is infatuated with Kavita and is not able to express his complex feelings for her. Paplu is jealous of a fellow student Rampyare who is a favorite of Kavita. Paplu is not blind, but Rampyare is. Paplu picks up a fight with Rampyare, and he closes his eyes to make the contest equal. But when Kavita finds them fighting, she slaps Paplu only and takes care of Rampyare. Anirudh starts frequently visiting Kavita at her house and spends time with her. Still, Anirudh has deep rooted inferiority complex against anyone who looks at him with a sense of pity or charity. He loses his temper frequently at such instances. Manju notices that Kavita is now happy and looks forward to life. Eventually Kavita proposes to Anirudh, despite his feeling that Kavita is doing favors to him and to the school. Anirudh accepts her proposal. Anirudh finds that Paplu has told his uncle that he wants to become blind. He believes that he is mistreated because he can see. Kavita realizes her mistake and takes care of Paplu. Anirudh and Kavita get engaged. Kavita, recently bereaved, looks to the school (and Anirudh) as a way towards an ideal, one of sacrificial service. Anirudh gets wind of this (when Suresh mentions this at their engagement party) and assumes Kavita is simply seeking to fill the void in her life with this form of service. He assumes she accepted the proposal, not out of love, but as a sacrifice towards a way out of her dark life. During this time, Anirudh's fellow blind friend Dubey (Om Puri) laments that his recently deceased wife was not happy in their marriage. Dubey says that he was independent before marriage, but got dependent on her with time and became useless. Anirudh is shaken, confused, and disturbed by all this. He breaks off the engagement (but does not mention the reason to Kavita). She accepts his decision. Kavita, now a salaried employee of the school, continues to help the children. The initial coldness between her and Anirudh gives way to friction and eventually, over a series of events at the school, brings up the feelings they were not able to discuss before. Kavita is given the charge to prepare the school for a handicraft expo. She decides to bring in outside consultants without asking Anirudh, which annoys him. Anirudh feels that blind children should be self sustainable, without any help from a sighted person. Kavita feels that some guidance from anyone is not wrong at all. Kavita later admonishes Anirudh for not procuring any new book for the library in the last 2 yrs. Anirudh retorts that no new braille books have been published in the last 3 yrs. Anirudh then scolds Kavita for not learning braille herself. The situation spirals downward and one of them must leave the school. Anirudh wants Kavita to stop coming to school. Anirudh calls her an "outsider". But Kavita refuses to leave as she feels this is her school as well. Later, she finds that Anirudh has asked for a transfer to Kanpur. Kavita admits defeat and decides to leave the school as the school needs him more than her. Manju finds out that Anirudh has broken up the engagement and speaks to him. She makes Anirudh realize that even Kavita has a complex that she was somehow betraying her first husband by loving Anirudh, and so she created a story that her love is motivated by a higher calling of sacrifice. The movie ends with Anirudh and Kavita being touched by the depth of their feelings for one another and finally seeing a way out.

Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) is found wounded on railway tracks and when he awakens he has no memory of who he is and doesn't remember anything about his life. Six years later, he is living with a wealthy couple who have adopted him as their son and is now named Naresh Dutt. One day (after a car accident on the roads) he wakes up and cannot recognize his parents and has no recollection of his recent past. Mr Sumesh Dutt (Pradeep Kumar) and Mrs Dutt (Urmila Bhatt) had lost their 8 year old son Naresh 20 years ago in the Kumbh Mela. Sumesh tells Naresh that 6 yrs ago, while travelling to Nasik, they found a man injured on the railway tracks and Mrs Dutt adopted him as her own son, Naresh. When the man woke up, he had lost his memory and easily accepted MR and Mrs Dutt as his parents. Mr Dutt reveals to Naresh that his real son's dead body was found the very next day in Sangam river, but he never told his wife as she would have committed suicide. Naresh begins to regain his memory when he watches a film and realizes that the actress in the film is related to him somehow. It is then that he discovers the actress in the film is none other than his wife Rekha Roy (Rekha). In flashbacks Naresh remembers that Rekha was a small time dancer in Calcutta when he met her for the first time. He got married to her, but she was not happy as she was ambitious and wanted to earn both respect and fame in her career. right from the beginning Rekha makes it clear with Amit (which is his real name) that she wont do housework and is dis-satisfied with his rs 500 a month salary. She wants luxury and status... Amit takes 2 loans on his PF and money from his friends to fund his wives lavish lifestyle and her dancing classes. To the extent that this comes in notice of his boss, who decides to cut 50% of his pay towards his PF loan. Meanwhile Rekha wants to increase the salary of her dance teacher to Rs 100/month. The teacher brings a movie producer, who wants Rekha to perform a cabaret in his next movie. But Amit refuses and Rekha is angry. Then they realize that Rekha is pregnant and she is furious at Amit for destroying her life and her career. Amit's neighbor (Lalita Pawar) stokes the marital discord for her own entertainment. Due to his hard work Amit receives a promotion at work and his PF loan is excused. Mithun is born and is now 4 yrs old. Ranjeet Malik (Prem Chopra) is Amit's US returned friend, whom he introduces to Rekha. Rekha is attracted to Ranjeet's flashy cars and expensive clothes. He offers Rekha a dance performance for charity, which Amit allows. Rekha liked a pearl necklace but it costed rs 1500, so Amit wants to borrow money from Ranjeet to gift the necklace to Rekha on her birthday. But Ranjeet refuses the money to Amit and gifts Rekha the necklace himself. Amit starts to think that something is on between Rekha and Ranjeet. The charity show is a hit and Ranjeet tells Amit that he is getting movie offers for Rekha. Amit gets more and more jealous and Rekha goes to Ranjeet to complain. Ranjeet suggests they all take a vacation in Mumbai and takes them by train. In the train, Ranjeet gets Amit drunk and when Amit again talks about why Ranjeet is being so generous to him and Rekha, Ranjeet pushes him off the train. Amit travels to Calcuuta and finds out that Rekha is now a very successful film actress, having changed her name to Sunita Devi and her manager is none other than Ranjeet. Amit befriends director Mr Sanyal (Utpal Dutt) who tells Amit (who poses as a film financier from Mumbai) that Rekha's first husband committed suicide and that his young son who is now 10 years old has been sent to a boarding school and regains custody of his son. He first makes sure that his son recognizes him, despite the disguise, which he does. He plans on taking revenge against Ranjeet. Amit comes up with a plan to re-enter Rekha and Ranjit's lives by disguising himself as a film producer. He meets with Rekha and Ranjit and offers Rekha the opportunity to act in his new film titled Do Anjaane. Rekha and Ranjit grow suspicious of Naresh Dutt as they start to realize that he bears a striking resemblance to Rekha's supposedly deceased husband Amit Roy and the story line of his film eerily mirrors Rekha's past life. Amit uses his wealth to lure Rekha away from Ranjeet and drive a wedge between the two. Ranjeet and Rekha do their own investigation but only find that Naresh is indeed the sole son of wealthy businessman Sumeet. After shooting one of the scenes, Rekha realizes that Ranjeet had pushed Amit out of the train, and he had not committed suicide as Ranjeet had claimed. Ranjeet threatens Rekha that if he is arrested, she will be too. Ranjeet attacks Amit, but Amit is ready and records his confession and hands him over to the police. Rekha arrives and Amit tells her that he will take away Mithun from her. The next day they both arrive at the boarding school and Mithun decides to go with Amit. In the end, Amit pretended to go back to Mumbai with his son, instead came back to Rekha's home with his parents. It is concluded that he forgave her halfheartedly and they got back together again.

Amar and Mansi live a rather peaceful and happy married life, that is, until Amar's job in an advertising agency requires him to work closely with beautiful models, which leads to some serious trouble in paradise. Amar and Mansi are in love, and decide to get married. They do so, and still continue to be in love. They get to their first wedding anniversary, and decide to hire a taxi-cab for a day, just to drive around and have fun. Thereafter, to their joy they are blessed with a child. But then their bliss is cut short, when Amar starts work with his advertising agency, which grooms beautiful young women, to further their careers as models, and both cannot stand each other anymore. —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

Dr. Shankar Chaudhry lives a wealthy lifestyle in Bombay with his widowed mom, Rukmini, and younger sister, Manju. His mom would like him to get married to Ambala-based Advocate Madhusudan's daughter, Maya, even though neither of them have seen her. Shankar does agree to this marriage; the marriage takes place, the bride faints after the formalities; she is looked after by her cousin, Prakash, and Madhusudan; she recovers, and the next day she accompanies Shankar to his home. On the very first night she informs him that since she is undergoing a Holy Fast, she must refrain from any sexual activity. A few days later, Prakash arrives to take her to Banaras where her dad has re-located. Shankar accompanies them and get re-married to her at Bhagwan Vishwanath's Temple. Thereafter, both get intimate and soon Maya becomes pregnant. One day Shankar comes home to find both Prakash and Maya missing. He searches for them, but is unable to locate them. It is then he finds out that the woman claiming to be his wife is not the daughter of Madhusudan, and may well have eloped with Prakash - who is not her brother. Twenty years ago, after killing his brother, Sardar Rajpal flees from his hometown in Shillong and re-locates in the rural area of Assam along with his adopted daughter, Meena. He asks his wife, Kamla, to send their son, Shankar, so that he can employ him and get him married to Meena. Shankar arrives and he is welcomed by Sardar who employs him and introduces him to Meena. A few days another young man shows up at his door claiming that he is Kamla's son. A baffled Sardar also welcomes him, and puts both the young men under observation in order to find who the real Shankar is.
