The film revolves around the story of three women. Ziya (Bhumika Chawla) is a fast-rising Bollywood actress. She came from Hyderabad and started in small time regional films before hitting it big in Bollywood. Her parents are retired and live in a small south-Indian town. Ziya has worked with all the big-name banners in the industry and has done a wide variety of movies ranging from commercial to artistic. Her live-in relationship is about to break up with Neel (Rahul Bose) who has groomed her for a film career. She wants a child with him, but he does not want any responsibilities. Neel says that he was only a doormat in Ziya's life, and he never knew whom she truly loved. He says that he invested 3 years in Ziya's career and to proper her to stardom and yet she did not take even 3 minutes to acquire the starry airs. Diya Rao (Divya Dutta) is Ziya's younger sister and knows that Ziya can be a bit moody. Soon Neel moves on and finds another girlfriend Nandita (Priya Badlani). Nandita's uncle Harry (Rakesh Bedi) is a rich industrialist and is putting up a big project for Neel and Nandita. Ziya is spying on Neel & Nandita and knows that Nandita is also cheating on Neel. While Ziya was watching the CD on her home entertainment system, Diya also saw the video and knew Nandita's secret. Diya is a simpleton and repeats whatever Ziya says. Ziya tells Diya that men like Neel only entertain themselves with girls like Ziya, but for marriage they want a "pure" girl coming from a high-class family. Ziya calls Neel and asks him to come by one last time to pick up his stuff which is still lying in Ziya's home. Before Neel arrives, Ziya shreds all of Neel's favorite suits to pieces. When Neel arrives, Ziya's mood changes again and she seduces him. Ziya says that she never acted with starry airs in front of Neel, but Neel says that Ziya was always thinking of the male actors that she was working with, which made him insecure. Ziya says that Neel was never emotionally present in the relationship and was never invested in making it work. Ziya's die-hard fan is Rehana (Tabu). Rehana even breaks through studio security to meet Ziya on the sets of her latest movie. Rehana gets Ziya to sign a few autographs but does not have any topics to engage her in a conversation. Diya is angry at Neel and gives him the DVD that Ziya's spy made for her. Neel watches the DVD with Nandita and finds out that she was having sex with another guy. Neel dumps her. Anushka (Riya Sen) is a telephone receptionist who longs to discover tenderness in her relationship with a wealthy suitor Nikhil (Ashmit Patel). Meanwhile, her office colleague, Tarun (Jimmy Shergill), loves her silently. Anushka knows that Tarun has feelings for her but ignores him. Her colleague at office is Piya (Anita Hassanandani). They both work in Nandita's uncle's office. Piya is sexually open, and flirtatious, but Anushka is more conservative and traditional in her views about physical relations before marriage. Nikhil wants to have a sexual relationship with Anushka, but she doesn't. For their date, Nikhil books a hotel room and wants to have sex, but Anushka pushes him back. Nikhil dumps her in a second. All the while that Anushka was in the room with Nikhil, Tarun was following her and was waiting in the hotel cafe. Tarun throws a party as he has been transferred to the New York office. He invites both Anushka and Piya for the same. Anushka sees Nikhil at the dance club and proceeds to have fun with Tarun to make Nikhil jealous. Nikhil comes begging back to her and she gives him a passionate French kiss right on the beach, in public. Nikhil is ashamed and now Anushka knows that he only wants a hidden relationship with her and not a public one. The working girl must decide between the two in a romantic finale that has a twist in the tale. Anushka feels bad about treating Nikhil that way, even though Tarun is pursuing her with gifts and roses. She knows Tarun is the safe and sincere guy, but Nikhil is passionate, exciting and adventurous. Anushka asks for Tarun's help to patch up with Nikhil. Tarun takes Anushka to meet Nikhil only to find that Nikhil is having sex with another random girl in the same hotel room that he took Anushka to. Anushka kisses Tarun and sleeps with him. But she won't marry Tarun and wants to start a new life. Rehana (Tabu) is a 2nd housewife of Anwar, who must confront the fact that her husband Anwar (Kay Kay Menon) is being unfaithful to her with an air hostess, Preeti (Celina Jaitly). Inayat (Karan Panthaky) is Anwar's son from the first marriage. Inayat secretly has a crush on Rehana. Rehana gets blank calls from an anonymous caller (which is revealed to be Inayat). Preeti is good friends with Nandita. Inayat hates Anwar and wants Rehana to speak up against the injustice from Anwar. Anwar proposes to Preeti, but she doesn't want to destroy a home. Rehana goes to Preeti while Anwar is with her. Inayat made this happen. Rehana leaves Anwar and says that she sacrificed her life for his happiness. Ziya is pregnant and Neel is the father. Tarun gets a job in NYC and leaves. Rehana moves in with her mother. Ziya has a car crash on the highway right when Rehana is driving by. Rehana takes Ziya to the hospital. She has a boy.

A group of Indian prisoners from the Indo-Pak war try to escape the Pakistani army. On a mission to rescue them is Gaurav, the son of an Army Major who is one of the captives.

Indian Army Major Ranvir Kaul (Amitabh Bachchan) and some 30 of his colleagues were captured in Pakistan and held under brutal conditions for 33 years. The jail is headed by Maj Qureshi (Piyush Mishra), who does not like the brutal torture of the prisoners. Kaul attempts another escape (he steals a lighter from his torturer and uses that to light his guard's face on fire, when he was being transported between prisons) but is caught, beaten, berated and thrown back in prison. Eijaz (Aditya Srivastava) is the ISI officer in charge of torturing them. During the fracas one of his men does flee and through a sympathetic friend, Jabbar (Akhilendra Mishra), sends a letter home. Kaul's wife (Tanuja) and son Gaurav (Akshaye Khanna) petition the Indian Army but the General, though sympathetic, has his hands tied. He raises the subject and Pakistan will deny it and immediately the men will be shot; he cannot authorize Army action absent hard evidence (not just a letter); there are no other options. Kaul's son, Gaurav, sets off to find his father. he is not sure if Ranvir is still alive, but his mother is resolute in her conviction. Other prisoners include Naru (Ashraful Haque), Anand (Rajendra Gupta), Nayyar (Kamlesh Sawant) & others. Gaurav smuggles himself into Pakistan (By getting captured as a Pakistani dead person and is thrown across the border by BSF in a body exchange) (Gaurav travels by train but is recognized by a policeman from the India matchbox he carries. Gaurav manages to kill the policeman and continue ahead) and meets Jabbar and discovers (he captures an interrogates a guard from the first jail) that his father has been transferred to a different prison camp (Since the original prison was being inspected by the Human right commission), Saran Jail under the cunning and sadistic Sohail (Kay Kay Menon). Sohail hangs one prisoner who had tried to escape during the transfer process, on the day of their arrival at his jail. Radhika (Amrita Rao) is Jabbar's daughter and falls in love with Gaurav. Kaul meets another set of captured Indian POWs (Capt. Ajit Verma (Nishikant Dixit)) at this new prison. Kaul attempts another escape. One man sacrifices himself on the electric fence (Actually Ranvir had got the short stick, but his junior sacrificed himself to save Ranvir) as others go through. Sohail bemusedly sighs as the others, once past the fence, are blown up by the landmines (10 soldiers die in the attempt). Kaul and the remaining prisoners are again beaten and kicked back into their barracks. One of the prisoners, Khan (Sanjay Dutt), manages to evade the landmines (by jumping over the dead bodies) and escapes. Gaurav meets him accidentally, while Khan was being pursued by trained dogs and Pakistani military police and brings him to safety. Gaurav attacks a military courier and, using his uniforms, infiltrates a Pakistan Army office block. Gaurav is caught by Eijaz, but Khan had followed Gaurav and saves his life. He steals a set of plans which reveal a water main under the prison. His father and the men can dig their way to this main and crawl out. With great reluctance Khan gets arrested again and tells Gaurav that the escape will happen in 10 days. Sohail correctly guesses that Khan is back for a reason. Khan discloses to Kaul that his son is here; this news, and the water main, is a great inspiration for the men. The men quietly begin digging a tunnel to the water main. They discover the body of an Indian Army Captain Jatin (Raj Zutshi) in the debris under the prison, but this Jatin is among them! Khan and Kaul realize that he is in fact a Pakistani spy. Gaurav and Khan had planned the escape for the night of the tenth and Jatin, the spy, had dutifully reported this back to Sohail. Kaul and Khan decide that the escape will happen on the ninth. Jatin is not told of this, but the men manage to send a coded message to Gaurav. The following day Khan notices the number 9 scrawled on an army supply truck entering the prison: it is Gaurav's reply. He will await the men near the water main outlet on the ninth. On the night of the escape the men overpower the guards (Ranvir stays out of the barracks as the men sneak in a dummy to maintain the head count. Then the major attacks the guards at night to steal the keys and rescues the men from their cabin) and kill Jatin. They enter the water main and begin digging away the last few meters of remaining debris. The knocking in the pipes travels up to Sohail's kitchen sink; Sohail quickly discovers the escape and hotly pursues the men down the pipe. Gaurav digs from the other side and, just in the nick of time, the debris is cleared, and father and son are reunited. The men make it through. One of them (Jatta (Raghuvir Yadav)) sacrifices himself on a land mine inside the water main which caves in and blocks Sohail. Rajan (Arif Zakaria) also stays back at the camp to fire at the Pakistani and prevent them from pursuing his comrades. Gaurav leads his father and the men to a railway line, but the train is delayed till morning. The men split up to avoid detection and arrange to meet at dawn near a border point village. They arrive at the border point, but Sohail and his men are in close pursuit. There is a firefight. Khan puts up a brave fight but is shot down. Ranvir Kaul and Gaurav and the handful of remaining prisoners finally get across the border in a Pakistan army truck. Sohail is right behind them, but his jeep is disarmed and he is surrounded by Kaul and the prisoners. Kaul points to the border line behind them; they are now on Indian soil. Kaul, now an Indian Army soldier, attacks and kills Sohail in hand-to-hand combat, and throws his body across the border. The film ends as Ranvir Kaul and his men are reinstated in the Indian Army and salute the Indian tricolor.

The film opens at St. Stephen's College in Delhi with the story of three students, Siddharth Tyabji (Kay Kay Menon), Geeta Rao (Chitrangada Singh) and Vikram Malhotra (Shiney Ahuja). Siddharth is a driven revolutionary who dreams of bringing a revolution in the state of Bihar that will end the caste-based discrimination there; bring social justice and change the society for the better. Geeta is a London returned, South Indian girl in love with the firebrand Siddharth. She has led a very sheltered life thus far and is yet to explore the terrain of the Indian Socio-political landscape. While she finds Siddharth's Naxalite rhetoric attractive, she is not sure if she can subscribe to it with her full heart. And every time they come to point of choice, Siddharth chooses his ideology over his love for her thus breaking her heart time and again. Vikram is a middle-class boy who dreams of making it big, whatever the cost. He is particularly afflicted by his father's Gandhian ideas, but irritated and frustrated at the same time, seeing his father's way of life as ineffective in bringing about a change. Vikram loves Geeta, without any reciprocation from her side for his feelings. Vikram despises Siddharth, mainly for having the affections of Geeta. Vikram sees Geeta and Siddharth having sex. Siddharth leaves for Bihar to bring about a revolution; Geeta leaves for Oxford to get a degree (She refuses to go with Siddharth, citing resistance from her parents), and Vikram sets up an office in Delhi. A few years later, Vikram is a fixer in the power corridors of government, Geeta is married to a promising IAS Officer Arun Mehta (played by Ram Kapoor) who, as Geeta says, "has it all", and Siddharth is still trying to ferment a revolution. But all is not as it seems. Below the mask of happiness, each is quite unhappy. Vikram has 'made it', but he still cannot get Geeta, the love of his life. Geeta is married, but she still meets Siddharth on the sly, cheating on her husband. Siddharth has a split in his organization and decides to rebuild his roots in the hinterland of Bihar. He tells Geeta that he can't see her for a while. Vikram buys an old palace for 3.5 Crores with the intention of turning it into a hotel. For this, he has to involve his relatives to pitch in with funds, who are in politics. Eventually, Geeta gets a divorce from her husband because of her love for Siddharth, even though she does not want to hurt her husband's feelings. Geeta joins Siddharth in the village where she starts to teach the children of the village, whilst the police repeatedly try to hunt down her now husband, Siddharth. She bears a child with Siddharth whom she sends to London to her parents since she believes he deserves more than to grow up in the remote village. Eventually the police round up the entire village, capturing Siddharth and Geeta for intent to cause unrest and brutally assault them both, fabricating a story of a villagers' riot to explain their injuries. Geeta is soon bailed out of prison by her now influential ex-husband, while Siddharth, on the run, is shot by the police and admitted to a local hospital and is placed under arrest while Geeta believes him to have been killed. Vikram, who has been consoling Geeta and taking care of her during the absences of her ex-husband and of Siddharth, is informed that Siddharth is still alive. Vikram travels to meet Siddharth and release him using his influential contacts, however he has an accident on the way and is admitted to the same hospital as Siddharth. During the night, local Naxalites break into the crude hospital and free Siddharth while Vikram still lays there. The next morning, the policemen in charge of guarding Siddharth, frustrated, accuse Vikram of having conspiring to free Siddharth and beat him up. After discovering that he is a man of influence, they resolve to kill him and dump his body to make it unrecognizable. Vikram, terrified, attempts to escape but is chased down, however the policeman finds that the Naxalites have emptied his revolver, and they beat Vikram up with an iron rod. Soon, the police chief and a local politician come looking for Vikram and are able to stop the policemen from killing him. Vikram suffers heavy brain damage and is rendered handicapped, while Siddharth tells Geeta that he intends to leave but Geeta refuses to accompany him. Siddharth has moved beyond simply trying to foment a revolution and is prepared to delay it because he feels that the people are not ready in spite of their saying otherwise. He goes to London to study medicine and through a letter, voices his anguish and disillusion with the idea of revolution, he writes saying "I hope the mysteries of the human body will be less confusing" (in reference to his studying medicine and quitting the revolution). The last scenes show Geeta going back to continue working in the village and taking care of the handicapped Vikram, who can no longer speak. With Vikram writing "I love you Geeta" on a rock, as they both sit by a placid lake and watch the sunset.
