In post Partition Kashmir, rivals Ahmed and Aslam compete for Salma's love. After Aslam reforms and joins the Home Guard, raiders kill his mother and Salma's family, kidnapping her. He pursues them, unaware his cousin is involved. Tensions run high in Kashmir after the Partition of the late 1940s. On the Indian side, two warring hoodlums, Ahmed, and Aslam, have something else to fight over: beautiful Salma, the daughter of Hakim Mohammad Hussein. Salma is attracted to Aslam but wants him to mend his ways; he heeds her advice, joins the army, and returns as a Home Guard. When his mom Zainab goes to talk to Hussein about their marriage, she is killed by raiders disguised as Darvashis (Islamic Holy men) from Pakistan, who also kill all of Salma's family and abduct her. Aslam decides to track them down, arrange for the release of Salma, marry her, and bring the killers to justice. What Aslam does not know is that one of the killers is none other than Maula Khan, his Pakistan-based paternal cousin. Dr.Arun lives with his brother, Madhu; dad Judge Ramkrishan; and mom Kamla in a palatial house. He decides to help the poor and the needy and in order to do this he re-locates to a small town, where he meets with a young nurse named Sumati and both fall in love with each other. Sumati lives with her mom, Laxmi, and has no father. When Kamla starts looking for a prospective bride for Arun, he informs her that he has given his heart to Sumati. Ramkrishan sends for Laxmi, who gladly accepts the invitation. After her meeting, Arun inquires about the results with his mom and dad, and is told to forget about Sumati and marry someone else. When Arun asks for a reason behind their refusal, they refuse to divulge any information. A scholar is compelled to live up to his astrological prophecy of being a brutal killer. Born on an inauspicious occasion in the household of Rajpurohit and his wife, the Rajjyotish predicts that this child will grow up to be a brutal killer. The region's Maharaja is asked to have the child killed but he cannot do so until and unless a crime has been committed. A number of elders, including Archarya, decide to impart positive thoughts and learning in him, as well name him Ahinsak (non-violent). He then departs to live in the Gurukool along with three other children, Maruti, Dhanpal, and Krishna. Ahinsak impresses everyone both in studies and sports. Years later, Archarya may be forced to take back his words when he finds Ahinsak has broken rules to stay away overnight with Rajkumari Mayadevi, without permission. The Archarya misgivings will gather more ground when Ahinsak gets into a fight with Maruti and injures him badly. As if that were not enough, he again breaks the rules and is punished. But the worst is yet to come when Archaya will be told that his wife, Gurumata, may be having an affair with his pupil, as well the discovery of the dead body of Dhanpal - the first of many victims that are fated to be slain by Ahinsak - who will now acquire a new name - Angulimaal - a man who first slays his victims then cuts their fingers off and wears them around his neck.
