The story of Paro and Madho, who lived in pre-independence India comes to affect the present. Events of thirty years ago in the lives of Paro, Madho,Janak, Saraswathi, the gardener and the disgraced policeman come back to create soulful links between past and present. Themes from the life of Zamindars, British Colonial rulers, parapsychology and law are skilfully twisted, so that most turns in the tale are unexpected. Attention to detail is excellent.

Recently widowed Thakur Vikram Singh left India the same time the British did along with his son, Anand, for England. Years later, Anand has grown up to be a doctor and travels to Bombay, India, to work together with Dr. Pradhan for six months, thereafter he must return home and get married to Lalita, who is the daughter of Thakur's Legal Advisor, Jackson. Six months go by and Anand does not return, the Thakur, along with Jackson and Lalita, also travel to India to bring him back. This is where they find out that Anand has been romancing Rajkumari Sanyogta and both are expected to get married soon. The Thakur is pleased with Anand's choice and gives his blessings to the young couple. Mohan (Amitabh Bachchan) falls in love with Asha (Mala Sinha). Asha is the daughter of Shiv Dayal (Madan Puri) (who is a peon at a local college). In fact he is a peon at the same college where Asha studies and keeps this a secret. He tells Asha that he wants her to be successful and doesn't want his poverty to be a roadblock to her success. Shiv sees Asha and Mohan together in college and tells Mohan to focus on studies. Mohan comes to Asha's house to ask for her hand in marriage and realizes that Shiv is Asha's father.. Shiv agrees to the marriage, but wants Mohan to check with his parents. Mohan writes them a letter saying he is marrying Asha and knows they will never accept her.. Mohan mother and her brother are greedy for dowry and know that a peon wont be able to give anything. The marriage is not accepted by Mohan's mother (but his dad (Keshto Mukherjee) is more docile and agreeable). She shows that she is OK with the wedding, but then Mohan leaves for Delhi for his IAS exam. Once Mohan leaves, his mom leaves Asha with Shiv and refuses to take Asha with her to their home. Asha is pregnant and her father Shiv Dayal, realizing that no man will marry Asha second time, decides to make her a collector. Mohan meanwhile had moved to South India, where he later married Seema (Aruna Irani) as he was informed through his parents that Asha died. They live a happy life with their two children and Seema's father (Nazir Hussain). Mohan's mom died after his 2nd marriage and her brother stole all their family property and lost it in gambling and booze.. Mohan works as a clerk in the collector's office (which means he failed the IAS exam). A new collector arrives at the office, and it turns out to be Asha. They tend to work together.. Asha is a strict operator, but treats Mohan with kindness and deference. Asha wears a Mangalsutra and has a kid named Ramesh.. The office is flush with rumors about who the husband is.. Mohan asks for forgiveness for the fraud his family brought on them both. He wants to meet his kid. Asha keeps running into Mohan outside of the office and Mansukh (an office employee) spots them. Mohan goes to Asha's home to meet Ramesh, but is thrown out by Shiv Dayal. Asha is still humble and has lots of respect for Mohan, who is still her husband.. Mansukh brings his kid to the office since he is a widower. The kid tears up important papers and thus Asha forbids him from bringing the child into the office. Mansukh (Johnny Walker) is angry and with his friends, he spreads a rumor across stating that there is an affair between Asha and Mohan. This rumor reaches Seema (Mansukh calls Seema personally) and she is completely disturbed. Mohan misplaces a critical file, for which he should be dismissed (as it would cause loss of rs 2 Lakhs to the govt). But Asha is torn, as she does not want to boss over Mohan.. at the same time, she cannot overlook the rules applicable in the matter.. She gives Mohan 2 days to find the file. Seema discovers the secret of Mohan's affair with Asha. Seems sends her son, who studies in the same class as Ramesh, to Asha's house to check if Mohan is spending time with Asha.. Office employee Dubey takes bribes and hence is never promoted. Dubey aligns with Shiv Dayal and says he will help him bring down Mohan, in exchange for Dubey getting promoted to Mohan's post of head clerk. Dubey slips a box of money in Mohan's bag and makes an anonymous phone call to the office manager Jagdish. The Manager calls the police and Mohan is searched in front of Asha, revealing the bag of money with rs 5000. The bag also has the visiting card of the company whole file Mohan had misplaced. Asha orders Mohan's suspension. Mohan is under financial distress, so Asha sends some money via Suresh (Seema's son) to Seema, but she is offended and sends the money right back. As luck would have it Mansukh's son finds the missing file in office, hidden between magazines. The matter is brought to Asha, who immediately re-instates Mohan. Mohan finds that the bribe money (which Asha had given him to deposit in the official treasury), was wrapped in a drawing paper that he had seen in Asha's house. Mohan confronts Asha at her house.. Ashs convinces her that she is not the one wanting revenge against Mohan. After much turmoil, Seema finds out that Asha and Mohan had married 10 year back before her marriage to Mohan (she finds a photo behind the photo of her own wedding to Mohan). Seema thinks that Mohan cheated on her and got married to Asha very recently. She calls Asha and Ashs confirms that she and Mohan are married, but she doesn't listen to her full explanation. Seema runs away to commit suicide. Ashs comes to Seema's house and finds the situation.. She goes after to save Seema. Asha finds Seema on a mountain where blasting is taking place. Asha tells Seema the whole truth. Blasts take place and Seema is blinded and Asha is badly injured.. Asha gives her eyes to Seema, whose eye-sight went in the accident in which Asha is injured. Asha dies shortly thereafter. The ending scenes show Mohan, Seema, her father, Asha's father, and three kids (two Seema's and one Asha's) altogether paying homage to Asha.

Rai Sahab (Pran) is a retired colonel who lives in his family mansion with his five grandchildren (Rama, Ajay, Vijay, Neeta and Sanju). All five children are estranged from him as they believe he is responsible for their father Nilesh Rai's (Sanjeev Kumar) death. Rai Sahab is a strict disciplinarian who has become cold and miserable after Nilesh stubbornly leaves him to pursue music professionally against his wishes. After his son's death, he brings the children to live with him. Music was something Rai Saheb believes beneath their stature. This creates a rift between them, and Nilesh leaves to pursue his dream. He returns a few years later, now married to his music teacher's daughter Suajat. Rai Sahab welcomes them, but tells Nilesh that in order to live a life on his own terms he must make his own house. He never hears from his son for the next 17 years (since he didn't know where Nilesh had gone), although he waits desperately. When he finally learns his son is dead, he rushes and brings back his grandchildren to live with him, but despite his best efforts at providing them with all material comforts and facilities, they do not get along. However the children refuse to obey him and constantly flout his rules. Rai Sahab is desperately seeking a tutor for them, but no teacher lasts for more than a few weeks (the children play pranks on them and scare them away), as none of teachers can turn his 'savage' grandchildren into well-behaved people. Ravi (Jeetendra) is looking for a job in the city. He is a nice guy and gives up opportunities when he finds that he is replacing an old, loyal employee of a firm. Ravi gets a letter from his uncle, informing him of a job opening for a tutor at Rai Sahab's house in his village. Ravi has no parents but is close to his aunt (Leela Mishra) and uncle (A. K. Hangal), who live in the village. While he does not take to Rai Sahab's cold demeanor in their first meeting, he initially takes the job out of need (since the next opportunity is a few months away & he has no money to even buy proper shoes). Later Rai Sahab tells him he believes Ravi can set his grandchildren straight and implores him to do so. Ravi promises to try. Rai Saheb offers him a place to stay in his Haveli The children try their best to scare Ravi away, like they have with previous teachers, however instead of complaining about them Ravi laughs at their pranks and tries to befriend them. He realizes that Rai Sahab has strict rules against singing and laughing in the house, and that the children are not even allowed to play outside as they had once tried to run away. Unlike other teachers, Ravi does not believe in punishments or scoldings and instead tries to teach with humor, stories, music and play. He has a strict rule about not hitting kids with a cane and ignores their misdemeanors as pranks. He realizes quickly that the children do not need a teacher, but are starved of affection and stubborn like their grandfather, which is causing them to misbehave. Ravi also counsels Rama to not take offense at every little thing with Rai Saheb, as her behavior is reflected directly in the actions of the siblings, who go on strike with her and in the process hurt their own studies and future. When Rai Sahab leaves homes for a few weeks for work, Ravi opens up Nilesh's old room and starts playing his sitar. The children open up to him after this. He regularly takes them out on picnics, plays with them and tells them stories. All the children start studying with Ravi and their behavior changes, becoming more receptive and respectful of elders. Ravi and Rama (Jaya Bhaduri) the oldest of the siblings slowly begin to develop feelings for each other. Rama is eighteen and the daughter of Nilesh and Sujata (Geeta Siddharth). Rama's mother passed away when she was a little girl. She learned music from her father and is close and protective of her younger siblings. Though she initially leads siblings in all their mischief, she quickly warms up to Ravi's unique approach and eventually becomes an ideal granddaughter. Rama begrudges Rai Sahab as she believes he never reached out to her father or them when they were destitute and arrived many days after he father's death, despite her father having written to him earlier. However, she finds out from Ravi that Rai Sahab received the letter very late, as he was away on business, and left as soon as he read it, without bothering to even carry anything with him. He reminds her how Rai Sahab lived with them for two days wearing the same clothes he came in, pleading with them to come and live with him. Rama realizes that she has misjudged her grandfather. A few days later, Rai Sahab returns to find the children studying with Rama and his son's framed photo hanging in their foyer. At first he is upset, but equally surprised to see his grandchildren studying quietly and greeting him respectfully, something that has not happened before. He finds out that Ravi has had to leave in his absence as he was offered a job in the city. However he is extremely happy at the children's changed behavior and begins playing and laughing with them, thankful to Ravi for having 'introduced' him to his grandchildren. In the city Ravi misses Rama. He received a letter from her and wonders if he should go back and ask Rai Sahab for her hand in marriage. His friend Amit (Vinod Khanna in a cameo) encourages him, and he leaves to meet Rai Sahab. Upon meeting him, he learns that Rai Sahab intends to marry Rama to a family friend's grandson - a wish he could not fulfill with his own son. Dejected, Ravi leaves without meeting the kids and Rama. As he packs and leaves for the railway station, Rai Sahab asks Rama if she met Ravi. Rama is surprised. In a poignant moment, Rai Sahab looks at Rama's face and realizes the truth. He brings her to the station just as the train pulls out with Ravi standing in the doorway. Seeing Rama and Rai Sahab, Ravi jumps out of the moving train and both unite. An ending scene invites audiences to their wedding on Monday 9 April.

An abused homeless male and a mentally-challenged woman become friends. Impoverished residents of a Chawl ill-treat a homeless collegian orphan, Bhola, make him do a lot of work, run errands, do not pay him, make him beg for food, and often refuse to feed him. After Gauri's marriage is canceled due to her being institutionalized for 10 years in a mental hospital in Agra, her mother, Leela, secretly decides to marry her off to Bhola. As both are shunned by everyone they become friends but then Bhola is blamed for stealing valuables, accused and beaten for writing a love-letter to Renu, and is beaten even more before his exams. Then things dramatically change after Bhola graduates, and a wealthy businessman from Singapore arrives and announces that he is Bhola's father. Bipinchandra breaks family tradition by marrying a city girl, Hemangini, much to the chagrin of his sister-in-law, Kadambini, and her husband, Navinchandra. Things are delicate even after both women give birth to two children each. Then Hemangini testifies against Navinchandra in Court, leading to the division of the property. Things got worse by the arrival of Kadambini's orphaned school-going step-brother, Kishan, who is beaten and abused by not only by Kadambini and Navinchandra, but also by their overweight son.
