An innocent guy who has arrived from a village to Kolkata gets himself involved into trouble in search of water after he gets thirsty in the middle of the night. In hopes of improving his lifestyle, a poor peasant re-locates to Kolkata virtually penniless. It is late at night and he is thirsty, and he is unable to find water anywhere. A singing drunk offers him money to buy some alcohol, but the money is snatched away by a taxi-driver. In desperation, the peasant attempts to drink from a fire hydrant, but is stopped by a Police Constable. Then he sneaks into a multi-storied apartment complex, and is mistaken for a thief. The entire building, which consists of over 200 units, housing nearly a 1000 people, set out to hunt him down. He first stumbles into the house of Kailash - who makes illicit alcohol, while his daughter is secretly romancing another tenant, Pradeep; the peasant then runs into another apartment - just in time to see the husband attempting to steal his wife, Meenu's valuables, so that he can get enough money to gamble on a race-horse; he hides in a drum and makes his way around the huge building and ends up as a corpse at the apartment of Ramnarayan Malik, who prints counterfeit rupee notes. `Shree 420` follows naive, hardworking, honest, Raj (Raj Kapoor), who comes to Bombay from Allahabad in search of employment. Finally, Raj lands a job in a laundry. One day, a rich client Maya (Nadira), discovers his proficiency with cards and takes him to a posh club where he wins her a big sum of money. Later, Raj gets involved in underhand dealings with an unscrupulous businessman, Seth Sonachand Dharmanand (Nemo). Gradually, Raj becomes completely corrupted and is alienated from the people he loves like Vidya. Raj`s conscience is awakened when he discovers Sonachand`s scheme to exploit poor people and he decides to right the wrong.

An impoverished advocate faces challenges after he falls in love with a wealthy woman who has a look-alike courtesan sister. Lucknow-based impoverished advocate, Rajkumar Saxena, complains to his landlord about the deplorable condition of his apartment but is instead told by the latter's daughter, Roop, to pay his outstanding rent for over 6 months or face legal action. He approaches her father, Harnam Singh, who not only lets him live there for free, but also befriends him, and invites him to Roop's birthday party. Roop gets impressed when he sings there and invites him for dinner along with her father. Before he could attend, he is asked to represent a courtesan client, Mohini, who is facing eviction by her landlord. He finds her resemblance to Roop quite unusual and mentions this during their dinner. This news apparently shocks Harnam, who gets hospitalized and subsequently passes away. Mohini, who is injured in an accident, retains him to sue Roop as she claims to be her sister, but the latter decides to let Mohini move in with her and share the estate. The latter's satisfaction will turn to bitterness when she finds out that Rajkumar shuns her and loves Roop while a former patron of Mohini, Shyam Sunder Laddan, prepares to blackmail both sisters. —rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com) Roop, a wealthy heiress, learns that she has a half-sister, Mohini, who grew up in the city's red-light district. "Awara", a film that introduced Raj Kapoor`s tramp character inspired by Charlie Chaplin, is regarded among the greatest films of all time. The film tells the story of Raj (Raj Kapoor) the estranged son of a wealthy judge Raghunath (Prithviraj Kapoor) who throws his wife out on the streets suspecting her of adultery as a result of which Raj and his mother live in poverty. Raj meets Rita (Nargis) in school and she leaves an impression on him, but they drift apart when Raj is expelled from school. Raj is convinced by Jagga (K.N. Singh), a crime boss, to take up a life of crime to escape his life of poverty. He encounters Rita again who is now a lawyer and a ward of Raghunath. Through dramatic twists and turns, Raghunath discovers that Raj is his son and a contrite Raj goes to jail with Rita promising to wait for him.
