Sahil Sinha (Bobby Deol) comes from a wealthy family. He is the stepson of Governor Jaisingh Sinha (Raj Babbar) whom he does not get along with while Jaisingh tries to get close to him. Even Sahil's mother Sharda (Priya Tendulkar) cannot persuade her son to get close to Jaisingh. Sahil enrolls into college and reunites with his childhood sweetheart/friend, Isha Diwan (Kajol). The two drifted apart when Isha was sent to boarding school years ago. Isha's father Ishwar (Paresh Rawal) is the secretary of Jaisingh. Sahil also meets Sheetal Chaudhary (Manisha Koirala) whose father Megnath (Dalip Tahil) is a good friend of Jaisingh. Sahil and Isha fall in love while Sheetal falls for Sahil, believing he is also in love with her. Jaisingh and Megnath learn that Sheetal loves Sahil, so they decide to announce their engagement at Sahil's birthday party. However, this does not go down well with Sahil because he does not love Sheetal and intended to announce his engagement to Isha. Jaisingh and Sahil get into an argument and in a fit of rage, Sahil holds a knife up to his father, being stopped by his mother. Sahil gets heavily drunk at Dr. Gandhi's (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) house, Sinha's family doctor. Gandhi advises Sahil to reconsider, saying that Sahil will lead a happier life with Sheetal. When Sahil gets home, he is shocked to discover that his father has been stabbed to death with the same knife Sahil had threatened him with. Before Sinha can reveal the name of his attacker, he dies. Sharda finds Sahil holding a knife and assumes him to be the killer. Although he did not see the killer enter or leave, Sahil has one clue - a locket which may belong to the killer. The next day, he is taken to court, where his mother, Sheetal's father, Isha's father and all those who were present at his party testify against him and say that he must have been responsible for his father's death. Sahil is sentenced to 14 years in prison. Before he goes to jail, he is able to hand the locket over to Sheetal. Sheetal visits Sahil in jail and agrees to help him break out. In jail, Sahil relates his story to an old prisoner. The prisoner tells Sahil about an escape route. Sahil breaks out of prison with Sheetal's help. Once Sahil is out, he is reunited with Isha. Both Isha and Sheetal decide to help Sahil prove his innocence by solving the mystery of who killed his father. However, the authorities are on Sahil's track - no-nonsense Inspector Udham Singh (Om Puri) and his team is determined to capture Sahil. Sahil decides to visit Dr. Gandhi, believing he will have a clue. Sahil secretly meets Isha at her home, where he calls Dr Gandhi for advice, and Dr Gandhi invites Sahil to his home. However, he finds that Dr. Gandhi has also been stabbed - this makes the investigation more complicated. Dr Gandhi's servant reports Sahil to the police. Sahil and Isha are soon found by Inspector Singh but narrowly escape. Sahil returns to the city and confronts those who testified against him in court, believing that they all had some motive for killing Jaisingh. Now accused of two murders, Sahil suspects advocate Thanawala (Raza Murad). He enters Thanawala's office and brutally interrogates him, throwing him out from the window of his office. Sahil similarly interrogates Choudhary and Vilas Rao but it leads to nothing. Sahil, Sheetal and Isha trick Mantriji into attending a ceremony and abduct him. When Inspector Singh realizes what Sahil is actually doing, he believes that Sahil is innocent. The murders were committed by two identical knives. Singh finds the same set of knives at Ishwar Dewan's house with two knives missing and arrests Dewan, who confesses. Isha's father confesses to killing Jaisingh because he was angry that Jaisingh would not let Isha marry Sahil: Ishwar is put in prison. Sheetal tells Sahil that the murderer is Ishwar Dewan, and Sahil releases Mantriji. Isha, however, is shocked and tries to attack Sheetal, and later rushes to meet her father. Sahil, now free, returns home and reconciles with his mother and half-brother, Harsh (Master Harsh Lunia). Sahil gives the necklace to Harsh. Harsh opens the necklace and shows it to Sahil, who finds his and Isha's pictures inside. Sahil realizes Isha is the killer. In the meantime, Isha enters Uddham Singh's house and stabs him multiple times. Sahil interrogates Ishwar Dewan, who admits that Isha is the killer. He reveals that while Isha loves him immensely, she has had a massive anger management problem since her childhood, particularly when it comes to Sahil. As a child, she had killed Dr. Gandhi's dog after it bit Sahil, following which she was sent to a boarding school by Sinha and Dr. Gandhi to keep her away from Sahil. After Sahil's argument with his father, Dewan and Isha had gone to meet Sinha the following morning, to request him to unite Sahil and Isha, whereupon the latter rejected and humiliated them in a fit of anger and asked them to leave. Isha was so enraged that she later stabbed Sinha to death. When Dr. Gandhi realized that she was the murderer, she killed him as well. Sahil is shocked beyond words but understands that Isha will try to attack Sheetal next and calls her. He rushes to her house but is attacked by Babu Anna, an assassin hired earlier by Mantriji to kill Sahil and Isha. Sahil is injured but manages to incapacitate Babu Anna and reach the house. Sheetal is fooled by Isha at first, because the latter falsely apologizes for her misbehavior. However, Isha suddenly attacks Sheetal. Sahil arrives on time to save her and pulls Isha off Sheetal, who rushes into Sahil's arms. An enraged Isha tries to stab Sheetal, but Babu Anna tries to intervene and is killed instead. An injured Uddham Singh arrives and fatally shoots Isha. In her final moments, Isha begs Sahil for forgiveness. During the end credits, Sahil is joined by Sheetal in the club that he was seen in at the beginning of the movie.

The film marked Raj Kapoor`s return to filmmaking after a long gap and became one of his most talked-about works. The film stars Rajiv Kapoor, Raj Kapoor`s younger son, in the role of a simple and idealistic young man, Ram, who sets out to bring back his fiancee, Ganga (Mandakini), whom he had promised to marry. Ganga is symbolically portrayed as the "pure" Ganga river, but her journey is fraught with exploitation, corruption, and tragedy. The film contrasts Ganga`s purity with the dirty waters of the River Ganga, metaphorically suggesting that society often taints what it considers pure.

Read more →For years, an aging Rukmini Bai (Shabana Azmi) has been the Madame of a brothel in Hyderabad, India. The women in the brothel live in harmony. Rukmini Bai takes pride in the talent of her women, especially Zeenat (Smita Patil) who is a classical singer and Basanti (Neena Gupta) who is a classical dancer. Rukmini Bai is quite possessive about Zeenat and does not let her get engaged in prostitution. Ramgopal (Om Puri) is a photographer who frequents the brothel. Ramgopal is lusting after Basanti, but she is not interested in him. The Doctor (Annu Kapoor) comes every month for health check-ups. Phoolmani (Sreela Majumdar) is a new entrant into the brothel. She was sold to the brothel for Rs 4000 by a supplier Srikanth (who had married Phoolmani and then lured her to the brothel) and she had a torrid start to her first day. She was frightened, ran all over the brothel, tried to escape and then finally lost the energy and calmed down. Rukmini is protective of her from the customers who wish to deflower Zeenat. One day Rukmini Bai gets the news, that she, now, has a new landlord Mr. Gupta (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), whose daughter Malti (Ratna Pathak) is to marry Mr. Aggarwal's (Saeed Jaffrey) son, Sushil (Aditya Bhattacharya), shortly. Given the finesse of Zeenat and Basanti, Mr. Gupta invites Rukmini Bai with her women to perform at the engagement ceremony of his son. During the performance, Sushil is smitten by Zeenat's beauty and approaches her in the dressing room. Zeenat also gets attracted to Sushil. In the meanwhile, it is shown that the City Councilor, Shantidevi (Gita Siddharth), who also runs the Women Organization of the town is averse to Rukmini Bai and her brothel. In reality Shanti Devi is coordinating with Mr. Gupta to build public opinion against the brothel, so he can get it demolished for his new construction project at the right time. Shantidevi's assistant (Pankaj Kapur) Via Mr Gupta, Shanti gets news that a minor Phoolmani has been kept at the brothel without her wishes. Shanti enters the brothel with a large public crowd to rescue the minor. But Rukmini traps Shanti's assistant in a room with one her other girls, who claims that he was trying to sexually assault her. This puts Shanti on the back foot, and she is forced to withdraw for the time being. Meanwhile Nadira tries to force Phoolmani into her first time. She has a stroke and later tries to commit suicide. To save Phoolmani the Doctor asks Rukmini to take her to a hospital, but since it is a suicide case, a police report is required first. And that means the entire brothel will be kept in a lockup, just so that Phoolmani can be saved. Mr. Agarwal bails the girls out. In a Municipal Committee meeting, Shanti proposes that the brothel should be moved out of town, in order to protect the town from getting corrupted. The committee agrees to her demands and Rukmini Bai and her women are forced to relocate to a new place in the outskirts of the city, which happens to be near the Dargah of Baba Karak Shah. Mr. Agarwal comes to apologize to Rukmini that he could not stop from the brothel being relocated but promises to take care of the Phoolmani case. Agarwal also gets Mr. Gupta to offer Rs 51K, a house and land to Rukmini at the new site, to help her relocate. But the new location attracts a lot of people (as it the religious grave site of one Baba Kharak Shah, whom the locals revere and visit often), and Rukmini Bai's brothel starts thriving. In the meanwhile, Rukmini Bai gets to know about the budding love between Zeenat and Sushil and she forbids Zeenat from going ahead with the relationship. She reveals that Zeenat is the illegitimate child of Mr. Aggarwal and another prostitute, and Rukmini Bai had kept it as a secret for years, in order to save the face of Mr. Aggarwal. It makes Zeenat and Sushil siblings and renders their romantic relationship as prohibited. The complications set in when Sushil refuses to marry Malti and runs away from his house in order to pursue Zeenat. He asks Zeenat to elope from the brothel with him in search of better existence and Zeenat accepts his proposal. The whole brothel is in a state of panic when the news of Zeenat's elopement breaks out. Rukmini Bai and Aggarwal go in search of the children. However, during the way, Zeenat is overcome by guilt as she is aware of their biological relationship and thus, runs away from Sushil as well. Sushil is heartbroken. Rukmini Bai too, is unable to come to terms with the news of Zeenat's disappearance. She is sobbing in her brothel and instead of getting sympathy, she is rebuked by a Nadira (Soni Razdan), a prostitute who works for her. She asks Rukmini Bai to exit the brothel as the women do not need her anymore and can run the brothel on their own. Rukmini Bai is in a state of shock and with a heavy heart, she quits the brothel with her faithful helper Tungrus (Naseeruddin Shah). On their way, due to exhaustion, they halt for water. While looking for water, Tungrus accidentally comes across a Shiv Lingam. He calls out to Rukmini Bai and they both pray to the Shivlingam for a better future. Just then, they see Phoolmani, a former brothel woman, running towards them. Rukmini Bai is delighted at the sight of Phoolmani and thanks the almighty.

He returns home to his wife Sheetal (Rakhee Gulzar) and their young daughter and announces that he has been transferred to Bombay. He has two brothers, Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shashi Kapoor), who live in Bombay. They are intelligent, capable guys, but spend their time loafing about the city and swindling unsuspecting people (for eg they convince a corrupt hotel manager that Vijay has stolen rs 2.5 lakh of jewelry from his employer, and Ravi (a policeman) is looking for him. The manager makes a deal with Vijay to buy the diamonds off him for RS 10000. Thats when Ravi arrives again and threatens jail for helping a robber. The manager pays an additional rs 5000 as bribe to Ravi). Shiv doesn't like their philandering ways. After being swindled by Chacha (Johnny Walker) and Renu (Bindiya Goswami) (Renu appears as a damsel in distress who owes money to Chacha who acts as a money lender. The due date is past and Chacha threatens jail. She offers her Porsche against a loan of rs 30K. The car is worth at least rs 100K. Ravi is besotted with Renu (and was overhearing the conversation) and offers to help her by buying the car for rs 30K. Turns out the car was stolen and lands Ravi+Vijay in jail). Abdul (Mazhar Khan) a crippled street beggar, helps them find Renu and Chacha. Renu and Chacha return the 25K to them, as they already spent the 5k. Vijay is impressed with their work and offers to join forces for the next caper. The idea is to steal a diamond necklace from Maharani Kamalpur when she attends a party at the Sheesh Mahal hotel. They are quickly joined by a glamorous thief, Sunita (Parveen Babi). Sunita manages to steal the necklace before the quartet. But the police condones off the hotel and starts a search of every individual. Sunita drops the necklace in Vijay's pocket, which Vijay notices. He escapes by hiding the necklace in his cane. Vijay invites Sunita to join their gang.. One of their tricks (the duo play god-men who can walk on water) eventually backfires (when Shiv sees their ads all over town and arrests them) and lands Vijay and Ravi in jail. Shiv later bails them out and reads them the riot act at home. Shakaal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) is an international crime lord operating from a remote island outside India (300 kms from Bombay). Shakaal is a sadistic villain who rejoices in pain of his enemies and traitors. Shiv gets progressively closer to the root of the crimes in the city. Shakaal kills an informant on his crew by feeding him to crocodiles on his private island. A mysterious man (Shatrughan Sinha) tries to assassinate Shiv Kumar twice in the city. Shiv survives both times. After the two attempts on his life, Vijay and Ravi advise him to find a different line of work, arguing that his profession is unpredictable, dangerous and unsuitable for a family man. Shiv stands firm, citing his undying patriotic commitment to his corps and his country. Shakaal has Shiv brought before him by kidnapping him from the city. He compliments Shiv on his wits and valor, and invites him to come to his side. True to his form, Shiv firmly refuses the offer. Shakaal tries to kill him, but Shiv breaks loose and tries to escape from the island. Shakaal unleashes wild dogs upon Shiv and eventually shoots him dead on the beach from a helicopter. As Vijay, Ravi and Sheetal lament their tragic loss, the mysterious man who tried to kill Shiv shows up. Sheetal angrily identifies him as the person she saw escaping at the carnival after the first attempt. The man introduces himself as Rakesh, a marksman and former circus performer who used to shoot targets blindfolded. He was recruited by Shakaal, to assassinate Shiv, by holding Rakesh's wife hostage. Rakesh confesses that he deliberately missed Shiv on the two previous instances, hoping it would buy him time to rescue his wife. On realizing this, an angry Shakaal killed his wife. Rakesh sought out Ravi and Vijay so they could work together to bring down Shakaal. The trio seek the aid of a homeless cripple, Abdul (Mazhar Khan) and manage to find and destroy Shakaal's contraband warehouse in the city. Finding that Abdul was providing Ravi and Vijay with information, Shakaal has his men kill him. Enraged with the destruction of his warehouses, Shakaal kidnaps Sheetal and has her brought to his island. Vijay, Ravi and Rakesh fume, knowing that Sheetal will almost certainly be killed and that they have no clue about the location of Shakaal's island. At this point, Jagmohan (Mac Mohan), another of Shakaal's aides who has been mercilessly crippled by him, offers his help to the group to gain entry to Shakaal's hideout. Posing as a musical troupe (a familiar stratagem in many Bollywood films), Vijay and Ravi (with Renu, Chacha/Uncle and Sunita) enter the island and perform for Shakaal. Shakaal, however, reveals that Jagmohan was sent by him to trap them. Jagmohan's fracture was a lie. Their cover is blown and they are captured. An elaborate sequence ensues as the three men escape. The trio and the widow avoid the booby traps (Vijay is dropped into a tank with the crocodiles and Ravi+Rakesh are in a poison gas filled enclosure fighting 2 of Shakaals men who have gas masks on) and the henchmen ultimately capture Shakaal and finally end his ignominious existence. Shakaal, with his dying breath, sets his island hideout to blow up, but the heroes escape via helicopter to safety.
