The film, which has an intriguing storyline, revolves around two men - Tomy Eeppan Devassy and Sreekumar. Jayaram plays Sreekumar, a character who does all the domestic work of the household. Into this peaceful world enters Tomy (Suresh Gopi) disrupting the domestic bliss and bringing out an unexpected twist. With his arrival everything goes haywire in Sreekumar`s life and he reaches a position where he can no longer be with his family. The film unravels the mysterious past of both the characters finding the cause behind their unusual demeanor.

Ashok Raj (Dileep) is a lawyer, whose interest lies in reviving a defunct drama troupe called Bharatha Kalakshetram, which used to be run by his family. His elder brother Babu Raj (Biju Menon), who runs a company, is now in a financial mess. Balasubrahmanyam (Bhagyaraj) is a bank officer who has come to initiate legal proceedings against Babu Raj to get him to repay the loan that he had taken to start his venture. As it turns out, Balasubrahmanyam is now separated from his wife Raja Mallika (Khushboo), who lives with her daughter Raja Lakshmi (Sanusha) and her mother Raja Kokila (Sheela), the owner of Raja`s group of companies. The trio believe that a woman can survive easily, without the help of a man. The entry of Ashok Raj into their lives forces them to rethink about their opinion.

The film is about Palamattathu Varghese Mappila, a wealthy, retired captain of the Indian Army. He has four children, Christy (Mohanlal), Joby (Dileep), Jessy (Lakshmi Gopalaswamy) and Stella (Kanika). Christy is a police informer who is working in Mumbai. His brother Joby goes abroad to study theology, but later opts out of it after he falls in love. Meanwhile, Christy falls in with a dubious crowd in Mumbai. His family has no clear idea about the nature of his activities. All these come as a shock to Varghese Mappila. He is disappointed by his sons and so turns his attention to his daughters, hoping that they marry well. There are several twists and turns that the story goes through before it unveils the truth

Penpattanam takes a look at the struggle for survival of four women who are Kudumbasree workers. Based on a story by director Ranjith, `Penpattanam` has KPAC Lalitha, Revathy, Swetha Menon and Vishnupriya donning the roles of the four women. For each one of them, life is a battle, and each one has to find her own way to get through it.Though a women-oriented film, `Penpattanam` will have a few prominent male actors lending the ladies some support.

Akbar Ahmed (Prithviraj) is a restaurateur who has a passion for film-making. Toying with the idea, he gets a good script and produces a classic along with his friends. The movie becomes a hit and Akbar suddenly has an urge to make more movies. His search for once-successful moviestar Malavika leads him to a secret love story, which becomes the story of his new movie.

Old Kochu Thresia's family is irked by her childlike behavior and does not comply with her bizarre demands. She finds an unusual friend in Reji, a down-to-earth young man, who fulfills her demands. Kochu Thresia, is a rich widow, who craves to 'live' life, but is alienated by her children who are caught in the rat race for making money. At this juncture, she meets the young, down-to-earth Reji (Jayaram) in whom she finds a companion. Reji eagerly fulfils all her wishes. From savouring the mouth-watering 'but forbidden' beef to riding on the elephant, they enjoy all the moments spent together. They even get arrested by the police for gambling. Meanwhile, in his efforts to control his alcoholic father Chacko (Innocent), from causing public nuisance, Reji takes over the fatherly role. —Sujit R. Varma
