Since then, Elle has been in transition in her life in many facets, although returning to writing has not been one of those facets, she long ago having given that up. She has just ended a four month relationship with a grad student named Olivia, that May-December relationship, her first relationship since Vi, which she states will just be an inconsequential blip in her life. Elle has an adult daughter, Judy Reid, the product of a one night stand as she wanted a child but obviously, as a lesbian, not a husband. Judy, a driven businesswoman, in turn has a teenaged daughter, Sage Reid, the sperm which produced her being from a sperm bank in Judy not having the time to have a relationship. Sage and Elle are scared of Judy, the two more senior Reids who rarely speak to each other, especially since Vi's death. On this day, Sage turns to her grandmother for six hundred thirty dollars to get an abortion, Sage not wanting to ask her mother in the otherwise need to tell her she's pregnant. Elle, currently broke having just paid off Vi's extensive medical bills, wants to help Sage, and knows that asking Judy, for both her own and Sage's sakes, is out of the question. As such, Elle and Sage go on a quest to find that six hundred thirty dollars. In the process, Elle revisits much of her past, some of that past which has long been buried even before Sage and Judy. Whip It opens five minutes before a beauty pageant in Bodeen, Texas, where one of the contestants is missing. Backstage, 17-year-old misfit and rebel Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) regrets accepting a dare from her best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat) which involved dying her hair blue before the pageant. Bliss tries to wash the dye out but ends up going on stage with her hair blue, losing the pageant, much to the disappointment of her mother, Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden). With both Bliss and her mother upset about what happened, Brooke offers to take her daughter shopping in Austin, where Bliss witnesses three roller-derby girls drop promotional fliers at a clothes shop. Mesmerized by them, Bliss takes one of the fliers and learns of an exhibition derby match and asks Pash to come with her. After the team is defeated in the exhibition, Bliss meets the Hurl Scouts, captained by Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig) and coached by Razor McGee (Andrew Wilson). When Bliss tells Maggie that the Hurl Scouts are her new heroes, Maggie tells her to "Put some skates on, be your own hero." Bliss lies about her age and decides to attend try outs, keeping it a secret from her parents, who would never approve. Razor can see that Bliss has natural talent and tells her that she has made the cut, welcoming her to the Hurl Scouts. Bliss plays well in her first game, but the Hurl Scouts lose. At the after party, Bliss discovers a connection she has with Oliver (Landon Pigg), a 19-year-old lanky teenage heart breaker and guitarist. He compliments her taste in music, and as they talk, Bliss misses her chance to tell him she's a Derby Girl when she is thrown into a hot tub by Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis), the captain of The Holy Rollers - a rival Derby team. Later at the diner where Bliss works with Pash, she spots Oliver outside in his car and gets Pash to cover for her. Oliver drives Bliss to the arcade where he attempts to impress her with his pinball skills, but after that fails, the two end up driving somewhere secluded and singing together. The next night, the Hurl Scouts win their first game of the season, of which Oliver is in crowd attendance. The Scouts are forced to take their game more seriously and put faith in their coach. After Bliss' performance, she becomes the team's point scorer as their star Jammer and picks her Derby name as Babe Ruthless. As she and Oliver spend more time together, Bliss falls for him and is heartbroken when he tells her his band is going on tour around the states. Bliss develops a strong relationship with Maggie Mayhem as the Hurl Scouts climb the Derby leader boards but has trouble keeping a strong relationship with her mother, who is disappointed in her rebellious activities and her lack of interest in her beauty pageants. After the Hurl Scouts win another match, police show up at the warehouse they are held and order it to be cleared out. In the evacuation, Iron Maven overhears Bliss tell an interrogative police officer that she is only 17. Pash is spotted with a drink in her hand and arrested on the spot for being under-age. Bliss however has disappeared with Oliver and is of no support. Late that night, the two of them break into a public swimming pool where they make love and spend the night together, trading shirts to remember each other while he's away. In the morning, Bliss comes home to her angry parents who received a phone-call from Pash's parents and know about her involvement in Roller Derby. Bliss argues with her mother who is furious that she lied, however Bliss shoots back that she is sick of her mom forcing a housewife lifestyle on her, and she just wants to be her own person. When Iron Maven threatens to tell the League about Bliss' real age, she breaks and is forced to reveal it to her own team. Despite being shocked, the Hurl Scouts accept her and prepare for their final match. Bliss misses Oliver terribly, who won't return her calls. After she looks on his band's website, she finds a photo of him with another girl wearing the shirt Bliss gave him. She is heartbroken and seeks support from her mother, and the two make up with Bliss promising to compete in the Blue Bonnet Pageant, an annual event and very important to Brooke. She is later horrified to discover that the pageant and the final Derby Match between The Hurl Scouts and the Holy Rollers fall on the same night. She decides that her relationship with her mother is more important and attends the pageant. Meanwhile Bliss' father (Daniel Stern) finds footage and promotional photos of her on the website and realizes how much she enjoys being Babe Ruthless. He talks Brooke into letting Bliss skip the pageant for her chance at happiness. Minutes before the League Championship, Bliss is confronted by Oliver who has returned from his tour. She accuses him of cheating on her, and when he denies, she is still heartbroken that he never called and breaks up with him. Babe Ruthless and Iron Maven go head to head on the track, with the game neck and neck for its duration. The Holy Rollers barely defeat the Hurl Scouts, who are shattered at first but get past it, chanting "We're number two!" which is what they shouted when they lost their first match. While still upset with Bliss, Brooke finds the script to her daughter's speech that she would have read had she attended the pageant, in which she claims her mother to be the person she admires most. Pash is accepted into a college in New York, whereas Bliss pursues her love for Roller Derby and expresses interest in moving to Austin. The film closes with Bliss sitting on the roof of the diner, reflecting on her life as of late.

But their Christmas may end up not being a very merry one when the boys inadvertently learn that the bank will foreclose on the mortgage at the end of the year, Maryanne not even having the money to make repairs on what is the crumbling family cottage. They later learn that the reason for the non-payment is that Maryanne lost her job in the town not drawing the tourists, Ernie, the major town booster, who is trying to market the town as the Christmas tree capital, including a planned prime time televised event. Especially with their father Bill Kinkade being a non-entity in their lives in he long ago having abandoned them in pursuing his adventurous life, both Tom and Pat want to do whatever they can to help Maryanne, Tom accepting a job, one he believes beneath him in wanting ultimately to be known as a serious artist, to paint a mural depicting Main Street at Christmas, the fee not even close to the money needed for the mortgage back payments. As the town marches on toward Christmas including Tom with this job, a combination of the change in focus of the mural as well as Maryanne helping Tom's artist mentor, Glen Wesman, as he seems to be slipping away both mentally and physically as he pines for his long lost love Nicole, may be the impetuses to turn the tide for all concerned. —Huggo

President Jocelyn Carr (Marian Seldes) runs Wellesley, the most conservation institution in the United States. Katherine intends to complete her PhD and is on probation at Wellesley for the first year. Katherine quickly learns that her paper credentials do affect how her students treat her. She also learns that the students are book smart, but do not know how to think for themselves. Their parents and the school administration foster a predetermined path in life for the girls, namely, to stick to traditional mores and thoughts, with the primary goal of marrying into a good family. Betty Warren (Kirsten Dunst), Joan (Julia Stiles), Giselle Levy (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Susan Delacorte (Laura Allen) & Connie (Ginnifer Goodwin) are Katherine's students in her art class & have read the entire books before the first class. They imply that Katherine can't impart any more knowledge & rudely leave her class. Amanda (Juliet Stevenson) & Nancy (Marcia Gay Harden) are Kath's apartment mates as she chose not to live in the college dorm due to its no male visitor rules. Nancy teaches speech, elocution and poise. Amanda is the College nurse and is a lesbian. Her companion was a teacher at the college who taught biology and has recently died. Bill Dunbar (Dominic West) is a fellow teacher at the college and has a reputation of sleeping with his students. Betty writes editorials in the school newspaper and has an out-sized influence on forming popular opinion on critical topics. There are pockets of free thinking among faculty and the students, but those thoughts and associated actions are generally quashed by the overall tone of the school. Katherine decides to instill into her students her own beliefs of what is important in learning. Giselle is willing to accept that woman like Katherine can choose to have a life without a husband and a family, but Betty is unwilling to accept the possibility that any woman would want a career over a family. Giselle agrees with Katherine that a woman's only role is not to oversee the advancement of her husband. Amanda is the school nurse & distributes contraceptives. Betty finds out, writes an article & gets Amanda fired via her mother (Donna Mitchell) who is the president of alumni association. Kath finds that Joan has ambitions to go to Yale for Law but is willing to sacrifice all for marriage. She encourages Joan to apply. Joan has a rich family boyfriend named Tommy (Topher Grace). Betty meanwhile sees Joan as her lifelong friend, getting married to rich families & raising kids in adjacent houses. Beth tells Joan that her fiance Spencer are good friends, and that Tommy is looking for an engagement ring for Joan. Meanwhile, Kath notices that Giselle is trying to get close to Bill Dunbar. In reality they had a falling out as Bill moved on to other conquests. Giselle gets jealous when she sees Dunbar making a love for Katherine. Giselle begs Dunbar to take her back, but he refuses and moves on. Betty gets married to Spencer Jones (Jordan Bridges) while in school. As Betty leaves for her honeymoon the mood in the class improves as they start to appreciate other perspectives. Joan tells her she has been accepted to Yale & Betty is furious. Kath's boyfriend Paul (John Slattery) is visiting her over Christmas & she makes him sleep on the sofa due to Nancy's stupid house rules. Paul proposes to Kath, but she refuses. Betty misses 6 classes due to her honeymoon & Kath threaten to fail her. Betty threatens consequences if she fails her. Betty tells Kath not to disrespect their traditions, just because she is subversive, while Kath wants her not to disrespect the class just because she is married. In her next editorial, Betty takes the shot at Katherine & says she is threatening the established marriage values & traditions at Wesley by encouraging girls to forsake marriage for their other ambitions in life. Kath is hurt that she is being criticized for training tomorrow's leaders & not their wives. Katherine makes the students realize that the smartest girls in the country are being trained not to think for themselves in the name of tradition. She demonstrates how all contemporary art is designed to berate any free-thinking woman and idolize the ones who are wiling to sacrifice their lives at the altar of marriage. Dunbar makes Kath realize that changes take time and that she needs to allow the college to catch up with her thinking. Dunbar calls her the Mona Lisa, for her smile. Kath has sex with Dunbar. As the news of this affair spreads, Kath is judged by Nancy. Connie is dating Charlie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Betty's cousin. Connie is from a normal family & not filthy rich like Betty. Betty manipulates Connie into believing that she was Charlie's mistress as he was already seeing a rich girl. Connie stops meeting Charlie & later she finds out that Charlie had no girl friend at that time & Betty just didn't want Connie as part of her family. Connie reconciles with Charlie. Then Kath finds that even though Joan was accepted into Yale, that she would get married to Tommy & give up on Yale. Joan says to Kath that this was her choice. Joan says that not every housewife is a sellout of her dreams and ambitions. Betty criticizes Giselle for being a prostitute (for sleeping with Dunbar earlier and now having an affair with yet another older married man) but is hiding her own pain of her husband having an affair with another woman (Giselle saw Spencer in town with another girl in his arms). Giselle hugs Betty and she completely breaks down in her arms. At the year end, enrollments for Kath's class for next year are the highest for any faculty. So, the board of directors extend their offer of employment to Kath conditionally to her accepting that she would only teach the prescribed syllabus & submit her class plans in advance for review & change, with Betty as her strongest supporter. Kath meets Bill's friend Stan and finds that Bill has never been to Europe (Bill had claimed he was an Italian) and had lied to her about everything. Kath breaks up with Bill. By the end of the year, Kath's class fully accepts Kath & even discussed art in its true form. Betty files for divorce & gets an apartment with Giselle. Kath quits college & leaves for Europe.
